Join hosts Joe Juvland and Freddy Morris as they venture into the mysterious and iconic world of The Twilight Zone. In each episode, they dive deep into one of the classic show's most memorable stories, exploring its twists, themes, and hidden meanings.   This week, Joe and Freddy tackle "The Rip Van Winkle Caper", a tale of four criminals who steal a fortune in gold bars and hide in the desert with a daring plan: to cryogenically sleep for 100 years, believing they can awaken in a future where their crime is forgotten and the gold will be untouchable wealth. As the years pass in frozen silence, betrayal, greed, and the harshness of the desert take their toll. By the time the last man awakens, he discovers that the world has changed in ways he could never have predicted—and that the ultimate twist lies in the very value of the treasure they risked everything to claim.   Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Rod Serling's strange dimension, tune in for thoughtful analysis, behind-the-scenes trivia, lively debate, and plenty of surprises from the shadowy edges of The Twilight Zone.

#197: When the Analytic Frame 'Groans' with Allannah Furlong, PhD (Montreal)

"To come back to this idea of 'groaning' - I really like it because I think it's a good description of the work we do, but particularly because it refers to Antonio Ferro's concept of the absorbency of the frame, which I think is another way of referring to it, that the frame can take a little give and take, that there's something organic about it. It has a structure, but it's absorbent, it can move, it's alive. So that is a very important concept. I think a lot of younger analysts or psychotherapists who want to be inspired by psychoanalysis don't let themselves feel comfortable letting things happen first before they try and immediately intervene and feel that they have to have some kind of magical response to it."    Episode Description: We begin by unpacking the meanings contained in the metaphor of the 'groaning' analytic frame. Allannah speaks of flexibility, containment and "the expectation of misunderstanding." She shares the importance of the analyst having a sense of an internal frame which is then introduced to the patient and which contrasts with their assumptions of social relatedness - "Too much comfort in the relationship can lead to a pseudo-analysis." We take up the concept of the 'co-created' frame and touch upon the reflections of Aulagnier, Rothstein and Aisenstein. Allannah shares her thinking on the issue of charging for missed sessions and describes her reconsideration of her personal analytic experience with this. We close with a comment on the analyst's internal frame which enables them to "hear the patient in an out-of-the-ordinary way."   Our Guest: Allannah Furlong, Ph.D., a psychologist and psychoanalyst, is a member of the Société psychanalytique de Montréal. After serving on the IPA North American Editorial Committee, she was one of the original members of the IPA Committee on Confidentiality and organizers of the first interdisciplinary Inter-Regional Conference on Confidentiality. These collaborations led to the co-editorship of two books on issues of confidentiality in psychoanalysis. In addition, Dr. Furlong has written on the frame, missed sessions, informed consent in psychoanalysis, and the use of clinical material for teaching or publication. She has also written about the temporality of lovesickness, unconscious choice, and dehumanization as a shield against helpless openness to the other, for which she received the JAPA Prize for excellence in psychoanalytic scholarship. Her current research is on the subject-creating function of baby talk. Recommended Readings: M., Baranger, W., & Mom, J. 1983. Process and Non-Process in Analytic Work. John Tefteller and radio historian Dr. Joe Webb are back with another “lost and found” classic: a 1948 episode of The Adventures of Sam Spade. This one was missing for decades until it turned up on an Armed Forces Radio Service transcription disc, and it's based on Dashiell Hammett's short story The House in Turk Street. John and Dr. Webb dig into the behind-the-scenes history, from the show's production quirks and cast lineup to Hammett's rocky relationship with the people adapting his character. SHOW NOTES The Adventures of Sam Spade 1948-05-18 The Girl Called Echs The lead actors: Howard Duff as Spade, Lurene Tuttle as Effie Howard Duff had a long and successful, and sometimes rocky, radio, film, and television career. He was not an expected candidate to become Sam Spade. The then-wife of producer William Spier, Kay Thompson, suggested that he be given better consideration. Thompson was a musical coach at MGM and was an important behind-the-scenes influencer in encouraging stars to appear on Suspense. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Duff Lurene Tuttle was one of the top radio actors of her time. She might be best known for playing Spade's dizzy secretary, Effie, but she appeared in hundreds, if over a thousand, radio roles, often uncredited, in soaps, dramas, westerns, comedies, and other programs. Tuttle had a successful television career, often playing the busybody next-door neighbor, as well as many film roles. The supporting cast of this episode: Jeanette Nolan (Elvira Echs / Eliza), Jay Novello (Sgt. Benson), Lurene Tuttle (Old landlady), Sidney Miller (Doc) , Joe Kearns (Laundry Man / Warren Beeding), John McIntire (Monty), UNKNOWN (Eddy Echs) The title Girl Called Echs is a lampoon of the popular espionage NBC radio series Man Called X. It was often comedic and generally unserious spy drama in spite of the many important and weighty post-WW2 topics at the core of its plotlines. The later popular NBC spy show Dangerous Assignment took things much more seriously. At about the 4:15 mark of this Spade episode, there is a Man Called X not-so-inside joke. Spade says “I am looking for a man called ‘Echs' and I don't mean Herbert Marshall.” The star of that series was Herbert Marshall, indeed, one of the favorite performers for the Suspense series during the time that Spade producer William Spier guided that series to its prominence. Even though Man Called X was an NBC series, numerous actors and writers for Suspense and Sam Spade appeared in that series in supporting roles. When the cast arrived for their rehearsal of this Spade script, they likely all got a good chuckle out of the references. One of the in-joke reasons for chuckling at the title is that in the East and Central time zones NBC schedule, The Man Called X followed the Spade broadcasts! Many regular listeners of NBC  and devotees of both series would have picked up on the joke. So much of the Spade series was tongue-in-cheek with many inside jokes that only the crew and actors detected them. This title and Duff's comment about Herbert Marshall at around the 4:00 minute mark was one that everyone could understand. The plot is partially based on Dashiell Hammett's short story The House on Turk Street. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with Israel Story producer Mitch Ginsburg. On February 20, 1979, the last 33 Israelis returned from Tehran upon the forced closure of the Israeli embassy. After the rise of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khoumeini's new regime, the Israeli trade mission's location was given over to the Palestine Liberation Organization, whose supporters immediately stormed the building. In today's episode, we relay the untold saga of the derring-do that saw these final Israeli officials back to the Jewish state. A story of four chapters, Ginsburg narrates the tale through the eyes of the Tehran embassy's military attache, Brigadier General Itzik Segev. Hear how they walk the plank, assume false identities and eventually meet up with the American delegation, which was also fleeing the country. Our conversation is followed by the complete episode of Ginsburg's recent Israel Story installment, "Frankly, My Deer," which tells the tale of the final and frantic days of the Shah’s regime, when an unlikely Israeli envoy — a cross between David Attenborough and Jason Bourne — landed in Tehran. His secret mission was to bring back something certain powerful people in Israel sorely wanted. And so this week, we ask Mitch Ginsburg what matters now. Bob also recalls the Alar apple crisis, Meryl Streep's pivotal advocacy moment, the messy path toward unified standards, the political fights in Washington, the role of Senator Leahy, and the moment the organic movement transformed into an organic industry.https://realorganicproject.org/bob-scowcroft-birth-organic-label-257The Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. Today's episode digs into one of the most exciting parts of vintage radio: finding lost recordings. Host John Tefteller is joined by Dr. Joe Webb to talk about how shockingly few recordings from radio's golden age still exist. But every once in a while, a rare survivor turns up, like today's episode of The Adventures of Sam Spade from 1947, “The Yule Log Caper,” found on an Armed Forces Radio Service transcription disc. They talk about why AFRS versions were so important in preserving history, share a few fun behind-the-scenes stories, and highlight standout moments like Hans Conried's scene-stealing performance. Step behind the curtain of one of the most ambitious new crime comics of the year. In this panel conversation, editor Shelly Bond, writer Lazlow, and artists David Lapham and Chris Anderson dig into the DNA of American Caper — a sharp, character-driven noir series built by creators who know how to craft worlds that hit hard. Writer Lazlow breaks down his creative process, including how he co-writes American Caper with longtime collaborator and Grand Theft Auto III co-creator Dan Houser, bringing that same mix of satire, danger, and grounded crime storytelling to the comics page. We cover the book's early development, the editorial shaping from Shelly Bond, and the unique push-and-pull between Lapham and Anderson as they construct the book's gritty visual identity. It's a full craft breakdown from four creators who live and breathe crime fiction.

A voiceless Andy joins Brendan! for a Monday morning recording that opens with an all-time story about stolen groceries and freezing ground turkey that isn't yours. After they unpack the unpacking of someone's fridge, the two discuss the latest young winner in pro golf, Michael Brennan. Brennan, the top player on the PGA Tour Americas this year, will skip the Korn Ferry Tour after his runaway win at the Bank of Utah Championship. Andy and Brendan commend Brennan for his performance off-the-tee and note that the venue of Black Desert allowed for the top player to separate from the pack and cruise to a win on Sunday. PJ shares an amusing note from the broadcast that may get some Halloween costume ideas flowing after hearing that Brennan dressed up as Rickie Fowler as a kid. Elsewhere in golf, Steven Alker is the new "Mr. October" AND the new Schwab Cup No. 1 after a big win at the Simmons Bank Championship. Brendan tuned in for some banter between Zinger and Tommy Gainey, who did just enough to secure a place in the Schwab Cup finals and full status for 2026. Andy has some takeaways from watching some late-night International Crown and flags that a former Ryder Cup player is coming for a spot at Adare Manor after this week's DP World Tour event. Fifa Laopakdee won the Asia-Pacific Am, scoring an invite to next year's Masters. ANGC Chairman Fred Ridley spoke at the event and condemned the Ryder Cup fan behavior, which segued nicely into a unsubstantiated rumor about everyone's favorite PGA of America leader. In other news, DJ has re-upped with the 4Aces after his glowing comments about LIV last week and TGL's LAGC got some new investment from an AL Central ownership group that's been reportedly lowballing their Cy Young Award winner.
