Episode #158—Mark Nutsch—12 Strong, Horse Soldier Bourbon  Mark Nutsch served in the Army as a Ranger and Special Forces officer, deploying on multiple combat tours. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, he led one of the first Special Forces teams into northern Afghanistan. There, he advised the resistance leadership, helping to unite the disparate forces against the Taliban and al-Qaeda. Fighting on horseback much of the time, Nutsch and his team spearheaded the unconventional warfare operations that liberated the country. Featured in multiple books and films, Nutsch is a sought-after speaker, lecturing often on leadership and military topics. Horse Soldier Bourbon: Much of our brotherhood was forged in fire during the first days after the 9/11 attacks. Immediately following this affront on our nation, the USA responded with a daring insertion of small teams of Green Berets into northern Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance successfully overthrew Mazar-i-Sharif, a Taliban stronghold, with the support of these brave men. This region's inhospitable, mountainous terrain made efforts and enemy engagements on wild Afghan horses a necessity for one Special Operations team (ODA595). Nicknamed the “Horse Soldiers”, all these brave men are honored today by America's Response Monument overlooking “Ground Zero” in New York City. Today we hear a Combat Story that I've been looking forward to for years. As many listeners know, I closely followed the war in Afghanistan immediately following 9/11 and revered the Green Berets who rode into combat on horseback to take America's fight to the enemy. [Call to Action: Please refer your friends to www.trustsafetyinstitute.com if they're looking for high paying jobs where they can still help people and fight bad actors.]Today we hear from one of the very few men who was there, one of the Horse Soldiers as they've been called: Bob Pennington.Bob spent more than 30 years in the service, much of that with Special Forces, including kinetic operations in the Gulf War to one of the first teams on the ground in Afghanistan and more. He's a Distinguished Member of the Special Forces Regiment and in the Georgia Military Veterans' Hall of Fame.He and his Horse Soldier teammate Mark Nutsch have just released a book about their experiences in the days after 9/11 titled “Swords of Lightning: Green Beret Horse Soldiers and America's Response to 9/11.” And if his life can't get any better, he and Mark are also principals in the company that produces Horse Soldier Bourbon.I hope you enjoy this inside look into what happened from 9/10 (the day before the world changed) through the some of the first operations on the ground in Afghanistan (and enjoy some of Bob's celebrity moments given his representation as a key role in the movie 12 Strong) as much as I did.#military #veteran #greenberet #horsesoldierFind Bob Online: -Instagram - Horse Soldier Bourbon @horsesoldierbourbon https://www.instagram.com/horsesoldierbourbon/-Bob's Favorite Charities: Tunnels to Towers https://t2t.org/ and Land of the Free Foundation https://www.landofthefreefoundation.org/Find Ryan Online:-To support Combat Story and get exclusive insights, head to Patreon www.patreon.com/combatstory-Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory-Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/-Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory-Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial-Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial-Email ryan@combatstory.com-Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus-Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio JungleShow Notes:0:00 - Intro 0:42 - Guest Introduction (Bob Pennington) 2:07 – Thank you for supporting The Trust & Safety Institute 2:45 - Interview begins 4:02 - Meeting Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon for the 12 Strong movie 7:40 - Growing up with a father in the military and early interest in Green Berets13:32 - Starting his career in Ranger Battalion after college24:37 - Being a Warrant Officer in SF community 34:51 - Combat Story - Experience in the Gulf War 50:10 - Where he was when 9/11 happened 59:48 - Mindset at the time of 9/11 and being one of the teams picked for the mission in Afghanistan 1:12:45 - Combat Story - First operations on the ground in Afghanistan 1:38:31 - Swords of Lightning book backstory and information 1:43:42 - Horse Soldier Bourbon 1:49:42 - What did you carry into combat? 1:52:05 - Would you do it again? 1:54:11 - Help connect those who served with meaningful and great paying jobs after service1:56:49 - Listener comments and shout outs

This week The Pack is joined by retired Special Forces (Green Beret) Master Sergeant Scott Neil, the COO of Horse Soldier Bourbon (on Twitter @HorseSoldierUSA). We talk about his military career and his other endeavors up to his co-founding of Horse Soldier Bourbon. Scott was among the first to deploy after 9/11, and his exploits were featured in the blockbuster Hollywood movie ‘12 Strong'. After retirement, Scott wanted to help veterans and so oversaw and started several organizations dedicated to our Nation's service members and veterans. Later, a personal vision-quest took him on a world tour of whiskey distilleries. With some of the members of his former Special Forces A-Team, they decided to found Horse Soldier Bourbon. The process to start their own distillery was almost as difficult for them as when together they overthrew the Taliban from the backs of donkeys. Sit back, listen and savor your Commander Selection, neat. Cheers,Scott, Jake, & MichaelBourbon Lens About Horse Soldier Bourbon Horse Soldier Bourbon is an all American, ultra-premium whiskey crafted by the legendary U.S. Army Green Berets who answered the country's call days after 9/11 with a daring insertion, on horseback, into northern Afghanistan. This brave and unconventional act earned them the moniker of “Horse Soldiers” and inspired them to create their awarding winning bourbon. The team has been featured in the Hollywood movie 12 Strong, the CNN documentary Legion of Brothers, and is memorialized by America's Response Monument located at Ground Zero in New York City. When the team first set out on their journey to make Horse Soldier Bourbon, they wanted to ensure they were fully immersing themselves in the art of making whiskey and learning all they could about the ingredients used, distillation, aging and design. They therefore traveled around the world visiting distilleries and brand houses to gain more information and understand everything that went into making a stellar bourbon. The result was the ability to successfully combine their new knowledge and whiskey making skills with the meticulous precision, process, and habits they gained in the military and translate both into distilling the world-class Horse Soldier Bourbon brand.  Founded in 2015, Horse Soldier Bourbon encompasses three core elements that make it the legendary spirit it is today: Authentic, the team behind the brand are an integral part of the country's history; All-American, each ingredient used to make Horse Soldier Bourbon is from the U.S, including its glass bottle, which is molded by steel recovered from the World Trade Center to commemorate the lives lost but never forgotten; And Award-Winning, to date the brand has won more than 30 awards from many of the industry's most prestigious competitions, including three Double Gold Medals at the San Francisco International Spirits Competition. Today, the team's steadfast mission is to continue to create an award-winning, legendary line of bourbons, the embodiment of the American spirit and the Horse Soldier's legacy in a bottle. Comprised of rich and complex wheat-forward whiskies, the core Horse Soldier Portfolio includes the Straight Bourbon, Small Batch Bourbon, and Barrel Strength Bourbon in addition to limited edition expressions launched annually, such as the Commander's Select Limited Edition Release.  Looking ahead, Horse Soldier Bourbon will be making its forever home in Somerset, Kentucky. Located on 225 acres of rolling countryside, they put together an award winning team of international and local architects, experiential designers, and engineers to create the Horse Soldier Distillery experience.  The new distillery will become the most southern stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, joining the family of iconic distilleries that have made their home there and ensuring the Horse Soldier legacy lives on for decades to come. The Horse Soldier Bourbon Portfolio: Horse Soldier Straight Bourbon (SRP: $49.99 | 43.5% ABV):  The brand's classic recipe of authentic bourbon is made with corn, rye, and malted barley and won a Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2019. It is a balanced and robust bourbon aged a minimum of 3 years to ensure its distinctive, mellow character.  Horse Soldier Small Batch Bourbon (SRP: $69.99 | 47.5% ABV): Extraordinarily complex with notes of vanilla, ginger, and cherries, this “wheated” bourbon is made from small batches of meticulously blended mature whiskey, aged for a minimum of 6 years in new American white oak barrels. It received a Gold Medal (95 Points) at the New York International Spirits Competition and 92 Points at the International Wine & Spirits Competition.  Horse Soldier Barrel Strength Bourbon (SRP: $84.99 | 54% ABV): A uniquely complex “wheated” uncut and non-chill filtered bourbon that has matured for a minimum of 6 years in new American white oak barrels. This all-natural, all-American product just won a Double Gold in the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was included in the Top 100 Spirits of 2020. It also earned 93 points at the New York International Spirits Competition and 92 points at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, making it a truly prized bourbon. The soft red winter wheat in the recipe provides intriguing depth and complexity to this ultimate American spirit. Commander's Select Limited Edition Single Batch Release (SRP: $595 | 65.5% ABV): An outstanding and award-winning limited annual release, most recently winning Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2019, the Commanders Select barrels are meticulously chosen each year by both Commander and Chief Warrant Officer of Special Forces ODA Team 595. Sales from the Commander's Select are all donated to maintaining the America Response Monument located at Ground Zero in New York City. This year's 2021 release will be debuted in the fall, commemorating the 20th Anniversary of 9/11. Someone has to be the first. When the U.S. military enters an international conflict, some soldier has to be the first to lead his unit into combat. That soldier is like the tip of a dagger, bravely entering a life and death conflict. Today we'll learn the remarkable story of a young Kansas man who served his nation in this amazing way. Mark Nutsch is the former commander of the first Green Beret unit which went in to Afghanistan after the bombing of 9-11. His harrowing and heroic true story would become a major motion picture. Mark Nutsch grew up near Washington, Kansas. Today his family farms in Wabaunsee County near the rural community of Alma, population 783 people. Now, that's rural.  Mark came to K-State where he joined the college rodeo team. After graduating from K-State, he joined the U.S. Army and became an officer in the special forces. He was captain of a unit called Operational Detachment-Alpha 595 and led missions to Uzbekistan and Kuwait. In early September 2001, he joined the battalion staff. Then came Sept. 11, 2001. Terrorists hijacked planes and crashed them into New York's Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Like many people, Mark Nutsch watched it happen and tried to make sense of it all. He was with his six-month-pregnant wife and their two young children at the time. The U.S. military immediately began planning a response. It was called Task Force Dagger. Captain Mark Nutsch was reunited with his unit. They would ultimately be designated to be the first to go fight the Taliban.  Mark Nutsch's 12-man unit was an experienced, mature crew. “We averaged 32 years old, had eight years' experience, and most of us were married with two kids,” Mark said. The unit faced the tallest of odds. They would be outgunned and outnumbered 40-to-one, in unfamiliar enemy territory with uncertain allies.  On Oct. 19, 2001, Mark and his unit were helicoptered into Uzbekistan. There they connected with local Muslim soldiers who also opposed the Taliban. They began the campaign to retake Afghanistan. But instead of jeeps or tanks, the local Afghan fighters used an unexpected type of transportation: Horses. Fortunately, farmboy Mark Nutsch knew his way around horses. He gave some quick riding lessons to his fellow soldiers. K-State President Richard Myers, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recalled receiving the unprecedented request to airlift saddles, saddle blankets and hay to the site. The military did so. The Afghan and American fighters would eventually go through the desert and mountains on horseback to accomplish their mission. Against the odds, all 12 men in Mark Nutsch's unit survived. Operation Enduring Freedom ended with the overthrow of the Taliban, as jubilant Afghans celebrated in the streets.  This amazing story was recounted in a best-selling book named Horse Soldiers. After the files were declassified, the story was made into a movie named 12 Strong. Mark Nutsch's character, named Captain Mitch Nelson in the movie, is portrayed in the show by actor Chris Hemsworth who also plays Thor in the Avenger series. In real life, Mark Nutsch received a Bronze Star with valor for his courage and leadership. He is now a consultant for Army Special Operations and has opened a whiskey distillery business. He also remains supportive of his family and the Flint Hills of Kansas. Mark was recently named by the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation as National Honorary Campaign Chair for the Foundation's Next Vistas fundraising campaign to benefit the Flint Hills Discovery Center. For more information, see www.flinthillsdiscovery.org/foundation. Someone has to be first. Some soldier has to be the first one to lead his unit into battle on behalf of his nation. In the aftermath of 9-11, it was Captain Mark Nutsch from rural Kansas who led his team on that initial mission. Now he is continuing to serve his state and nation as a volunteer with the Flint Hills Discovery Center Foundation. We commend Mark Nutsch and all soldiers, families and veterans who are making a difference with their service. I appreciate these brave young men and women who are putting duty first.
