See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Critical Oxygen podcast, Aaron Geiser and I answer listener questions about endurance development, periodization, and training in a fasted state. We discuss the importance of balancing volume and intensity in training, and how to structure a long training cycle. We also explore the use of heart rate and watts for training, and the benefits and considerations of training in a fasted state for fat burning. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of individual context and goals in designing an effective training program. The conversation covers topics related to fueling before, during, and after workouts, the importance of calorie deficit/maintenance, body weight and body fat percentage, the diversity of body types in triathlon, factors to consider for ideal race weight, assessing wellness and performance, weight as a factor in long course triathlon, and the Zwift long ride as a community platform. TAKEAWAYS 1) Proper fueling before, during, and after workouts is crucial for performance and recovery. 2) Being in a calorie deficit for extended periods can lead to self-cannibalization and hinder performance. 3) Body weight and body fat percentage should be considered in the context of overall health and performance. 4) Triathlon is a sport that embraces diversity of body types, and success is not limited to a specific ideal body weight or body fat percentage. 5 )Assessing wellness and performance through factors like mood, recovery, and nutrition is more important than focusing solely on weight. Have you ever focused on training your breath? No, I don't mean cardio, I mean literally how you breathe. This week, I sat down with Luke Way, CEO of The Breathe Way Isocapnic Respiratory Training System, and Dr. Andrew Sellars, Chief Science Officer and an anesthesiologist, to talk about the respiratory system and its importance for sport. Luke is an endurance coach, specializing in elite level triathlon, but also working with mountain bikers and CrossFitters. After training for 20 years, he noticed that most athletes were limiting their performance because of the way they breathe, so he started to figure out how to better train the respiratory system. He partnered with his mentor, Dr. Sellars, and another close friend to invent the Isocapnic Breathe Way Better Training System, a three pillared system that consists of the hardware, the software, and the curation of knowledge. Dr. Sellars is one of the most respected authorities on athletic respiratory performance. His expertise informs the Isocapnic Breathe Way Better Training System. In addition to his work as CSO and anesthesiologist, he has a masters in athletic coaching. He co-founded Balance Point Racing and was a previous guest on this show. Key Takeaways: Is the respiratory system a limiting factor in sport? How we use the respiratory system in sport The potential for gains by training your respiratory system What does a good breath look like? Do you need to nasal breathe? How to know if it's working How does respiratory training help at altitude? How does this impact VO2 max? While it's officially "Base time" for many cyclists in the Northern Hemisphere, many are not getting 50% (or more) of what they can (or should) out of their time on the road building their Aerobic Energy System. LSD (Long Slow Distance) is still the mantra for many, and while these kinds of rides ARE necessary, they should NOT be the only kind of training that you do to help improve your riding or triathloning (if that is even a word, lol). If you're looking to build a bigger, STRONGER engine on which to ride, race, or compete, you can & MUST use STRENGTH TRAINING, along with in-sport training, to MASSIVELY increase your Wattage. Perhaps the best part of using this approach, is you get BETTER results, for a fraction of the amount of time (and boredom) it takes you when doing only Long Slow Distance training! Yet NOBODY talks about this! But only doing Long Slow Distances leaves us only challenging 2 of the 3 Pillars we need to build in order to increase our aerobic capacity. Don't get me wrong, you DO need long rides, runs, and swims, but when and HOW you execute them, as well as your ability to Recover & Adapt to them, play key roles. In todays episode we discuss 2 Training approaches- 1 which can be done with strength training or riding/running, and another which is often abused and misused on the bike, in order to not only boost your Aerobic Capacity, but also your Aerobic Power- an incredibly frequently neglected part of the energy system, which leaves so much potential on the table for endurance athletes. Yes, Strength Training for Cyclists & Strength Training for Triathletes need to be done differently, and this is one of the many ways in which we need to change the thinking! Yes, you read that right! When you understand todays 3 parts of how the Aerobic Energy System are built, you can & MUST use STRENGTH TRAINING, along with in-sport training, to MASSIVELY increase your Wattage; and for a fraction of the amount of time it takes you in your sport. Yet NOBODY talks about this, perhaps because of the thought that in order to have a "bigger engine" that we have to put in long, longer, and really longer hours on the pavement, in the pool, and on the road. But this isn't totally true, and in fact leaves us only challenging 2 of the 3 categories in which we need to address in order to increase our aerobic capacity. Don't get me wrong, you DO need long rides, runs, and swims, but when and HOW you execute them, as well as your ability to Recover & Adapt to them, play key roles.
