Listeners of this podcast might be familiar with the term B Corp, but like many – perhaps don't have a clear understanding of what B Corp stands for and what is involved in becoming a B Corp. B Corps are businesses that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency and as a result have received certification. The B Corp certification is the most holistic and rigorous independent certification for businesses today. Certified B Corporations, or B Corps, envision a better economic system where businesses can benefit people, communities, and the planet. They choose long-term investments over quick wins, and measure their success based on the positive impact they create. My business, The Cause Effect is proud to be a certified B Corp. We achieved certification in October 2021. You can see our B Corp profile here and read a short blog about it here. On the For Love & Money podcast, our mission is to explore the intersection of love and money (or purpose and profit) in business, to inspire a movement for positive change – business as a force for good; brands driving profit through purpose. The B Corp community and movement aligns to this 100%. Their mission: Make Business a force for good. We won't stop until all business is a force for good. So it is with great pleasure that I introduce today's guest Mindy Leow. Mindy is Director of Impact and Growth at B Lab Australia & NZ, the certification arm of B Corp. At the time of this interview she is also acting CEO. Mindy is a champion of business as a force for good. Instrumental in building the B Corp movement in Australia and New Zealand, She has worked with more than 200 companies to achieve certification. She has also worked with hundreds of other businesses to measure and improve their social and environmental impact through the free online B Impact Assessment tool. In this episode, Mindy shares her journey to becoming a B Corp champion and gives us some great insights into what B Corp certification is all about, what value the process of becoming a B Corp offers to business leaders; and the strong benefits that being a B Corp delivers. If you haven't already - my hope is that this episode will motivate you to check out the B Corp Assessment and start doing the assessment, regardless of whether or not you are committed or you have commitment from within the business to undertake the B Corp certification process. Hands down you will learn so much from simply doing the assessment. Some of the highlights of this interview: Mindy's background and how she came to be part of the B Lab Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand team Mindy shares the concept that B Lab use to describe shareholder primacy – as a “source code error”. Great analogy! The three levels that B Corp certified businesses need to meet: Performance, Accountability and Transparency. Mindy talks about these in some detail. Mindy shares the five pillars of the B Corp assessment and shares some examples within the pillars We discuss the value of undertaking the free B Corp Assessment She also shares the benefits of being a B Corp Connect with Mindy and the B Lab community: Mindy Low on Linkedin B Corp Website The B Impact Assessment

Is it possible for businesses to balance their responsibilities to people and the planet, while also making a profit? As the CEO of B Lab Australia and New Zealand, Andrew Davies' job is to help corporations transform and grow in terms of environmental and social factors, without sacrificing their bottom line. And it's not just about a management ethos, it's about the seismic changes happening in our world and businesses of all shapes and sizes realising their current model may not survive the next ten years. In this first episode of our Design for Good series, focused on some of the incredible people running B Corps around the world, Davies explains how businesses become B Corp certified, and why this isn't a trend. I have the co-directors of the Yunus Centre at Griffith University on the show today. Ingrid Burkett and Alex Hannant have published a paper called Roadmap to Recovery and Regeneration, it recognises that right now is a pivotal moment for renewal. Ingrid Burkett has a masters in business and she’s a graphic designer. She uses design-thinking to drive innovation and entrepreneurialism across all aspects of social impact. She was previously President of the International Association for Community Development, and she was the Inaugural Social Design Fellow at the Centre for Social Impact at UNSW and UWA. Alex Hannant has a Masters in Development, and his research is focused on social entrepreneurship. Alex was previously CEO of the Ākina Foundation in New Zealand, and he serves on the Board of B-Lab Australia and New Zealand. I really enjoyed this conversation, these two are clearly a great team, with complimentary skill-sets and a united vision for what they hope the Yunus Centre can achieve. Great conversation as apart of my invite to the Banksia Ignite event in Sydney in 2019. In this short conversation; we hear from Alan Dayeh from B Lab Australia. Alan shares some value insights into how to measure the SDGs once they have been implemented in the workplace. A common question from the SDG conversation. Alan Dayeh has a career of over 20 years, holding roles in ASX-listed companies, management consulting and boutique sustainability firms. Most recently he was Westpac’s Head of Sustainability Governance, with oversight of the Group’s Sustainability Strategy, Risk Framework as well as their Climate Change and Human Rights Position Statements. Alan is now the NSW Managing Principal for Point Advisory, a specialist sustainability services company helping organisations to contribute to the SDGs. Point Advisory is both a signatory to the UN Global Compact and is also a Certified B Corp. He is also a Board Member of B Lab Australia & New Zealand since 2016, providing strategic and standards-setting guidance to the growing global B Corp movement.
Anna Crabb is General Manager of B Lab Australia. The team work tirelessly to manage the B Corp certification: assessing the sustainability credentials of purpose-led companies and giving them the B Corp tick if they’re up to scratch. But, they’re also working to bring Benefit Companies to Australia. A Benefit Company is a new type of legal structure that offers Australian companies more options to permanently embed a mission and a purpose into their corporate structure. Early on in her career Anna worked for the government, but she made the switch to consulting as she wanted a more dynamic workplace. She worked at SVA and a number of other consulting firms, and as she began to appreciate the power of businesses to make a genuine change in Australia, she soon discovered the B Corp movement. I really enjoyed this chat with Anna. She confident and passionate and she’s making a big impact here in Australia. If you like what you’re hearing, please give us a review on iTunes. In the wake of the Financial Services Royal Commission, many are questioning the ethics of some of our largest businesses. Yet, more and more businesses are taking steps to expand their corporate social responsibility, become a social enterprise, attain B-Corp certification or play with impact investment. In this interview, we discuss these trends and more, including why law reform in Australia would enable more businesses to legally enshrine their mission and protect their Directors in the process. Andrea’s wealth of experience has equipped her with fascinating and important insights into the future of business and international development, and why we already have the tools we need to redefine profit, purpose and progress. 1:45 - What is a B-Corp? 2:55 - B-Lab 9:22 - Becoming a B-Corp 12:48 - Redefining business culture 16:30 - Building the B-Lab community 19:16 - The Benefit Company 20:25 - Impact Investment 25:50 - Why business MUST be a force for good 30:30 - Inclusive capitalism 36:00 - Business and international development Check out our article on this weeks episode, over at the Lowy Interpreter - https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/business-aid-and-aiding-business You can learn more about B-Lab Australia via their website - https://bcorporation.com.au Royalty free music by Bensound
