CATEQUESIS DE JUAN PABLO II Junto a los canales de Babilonia 1. En este primer miércoles de Adviento, tiempo litúrgico de silencio, vigilancia y oración como preparación para la Navidad, meditamos el salmo 136, que se ha hecho célebre en la versión latina de su inicio, Super flumina Babylonis. El texto evoca la tragedia que vivió el pueblo judío durante la destrucción de Jerusalén, acaecida en el año 586 a. C., y el sucesivo y consiguiente destierro en Babilonia. Se trata de un canto nacional de dolor, marcado por una profunda nostalgia por lo que se había perdido. Esta apremiante invocación al Señor para que libre a sus fieles de la esclavitud babilónica expresa también los sentimientos de esperanza y espera de la salvación con los que hemos iniciado nuestro camino de Adviento. La primera parte del Salmo (cf. vv. 1-4) tiene como telón de fondo la tierra del destierro, con sus ríos y canales, que regaban la llanura de Babilonia, sede de los judíos deportados. Es casi la anticipación simbólica de los campos de concentración, en los que el pueblo judío -en el siglo que acaba de concluir- sufrió una operación infame de muerte, que ha quedado como una vergüenza indeleble en la historia de la humanidad. La segunda parte del Salmo (cf. vv. 5-6), por el contrario, está impregnada del recuerdo amoroso de Sión, la ciudad perdida pero viva en el corazón de los desterrados. 2. En sus palabras, el salmista se refiere a la mano, la lengua, el paladar, la voz y las lágrimas. La mano es indispensable para el músico que toca la cítara, pero está paralizada (cf. v. 5) por el dolor, entre otras causas porque las cítaras están colgadas de los sauces. La lengua es necesaria para el cantor, pero está pegada al paladar (cf. v. 6). En vano los verdugos babilonios «los invitan a cantar, para divertirlos» (cf. v. 3). Los «cantos de Sión» son «cantos del Señor» (vv. 3-4); no son canciones folclóricas, para espectáculo. Sólo pueden elevarse al cielo en la liturgia y en la libertad de un pueblo. 3. Dios, que es el árbitro último de la historia, sabrá comprender y acoger según su justicia también el grito de las víctimas, por encima de los graves acentos que a veces asume. En ella el gran Padre de la Iglesia introduce una nota sorprendente y de gran actualidad: sabe que incluso entre los habitantes de Babilonia hay personas comprometidas en favor de la paz y del bien de la comunidad, aunque no comparten la fe bíblica, es decir, aunque no conocen la esperanza en la ciudad eterna a la que aspiramos. Llevan en sí mismos una chispa de deseo de algo desconocido, de algo más grande, de algo trascendente, de una verdadera redención. Y él dice que incluso entre los perseguidores, entre los no creyentes, se encuentran personas con esa chispa, con una especie de fe, de esperanza, en la medida que les es posible en las circunstancias en que viven. Con esta fe también en una realidad desconocida, están realmente en camino hacia la verdadera Jerusalén, hacia Cristo. Y con esta apertura de esperanza también para los babilonios -como los llama Agustín-, para los que no conocen a Cristo, y ni siquiera a Dios, y a pesar de ello desean algo desconocido, algo eterno, nos exhorta también a nosotros a no fijarnos simplemente en las cosas materiales del momento presente, sino a perseverar en el camino hacia Dios. Sólo con esta esperanza más grande podemos también transformar este mundo, de modo adecuado. San Agustín lo dice con estas palabras: «Si somos ciudadanos de Jerusalén, (...) y debemos vivir en esta tierra, en la confusión del mundo presente, en esta Babilonia, donde no vivimos como ciudadanos sino como prisioneros, es necesario que no sólo cantemos lo que dice el Salmo, sino que también lo vivamos: esto se hace con una aspiración profunda del corazón, plena y religiosamente deseoso de la ciudad eterna». Y añade, refiriéndose a la «ciudad terrestre llamada Babilonia»: «Tiene personas que, impulsadas por el amor a ella, se esfuerzan por garantizar la paz -la paz temporal-, sin alimentar en su corazón otra esperanza, más aún, poniendo en esto toda su alegría, sin buscar nada más. Y vemos que se esfuerzan al máximo por ser útiles a la sociedad terrena. Ahora bien, si se comprometen con conciencia pura en este esfuerzo, Dios no permitirá que perezcan con Babilonia, pues los ha predestinado a ser ciudadanos de Jerusalén, pero con tal de que, viviendo en Babilonia, no tengan su soberbia, su lujo caduco y su irritante arrogancia. (...) Ve su esclavitud y les mostrará la otra ciudad, por la que deben suspirar verdaderamente y hacia la cual deben dirigir todo esfuerzo» (Esposizioni sui Salmi, 136,1-2: Nuova Biblioteca Agostiniana, XXVIII, Roma 1977, pp. 397. 399). Pidamos al Señor que en todos nosotros se despierte este deseo, esta apertura hacia Dios, y que también los que no conocen a Cristo sean tocados por su amor, de forma que todos juntos estemos en peregrinación hacia la ciudad definitiva y la luz de esta ciudad brille también en nuestro tiempo y en nuestro mundo.
