13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.Qui ergo solverit unum de mandatis istis minimis, et docuerit sic homines, minimus vocabitur in regno caelorum : qui autem fecerit et docuerit, hic magnus vocabitur in regno caelorum.[17] "To fulfill": By accomplishing all the figures and prophecies; and perfecting all that was imperfect.[18] "Amen": That is, assuredly of a truth. This Hebrew word, amen, is here retained by the example and authority of all the four Evangelists. It is used by our Lord as a strong asseveration, and affirmation of the truth.St Jerome was born in Dalmatia, and educated in Rome, but he was soon led into the gravest disorders. He was inspried by heaven and was converted and became one of the greatest Doctors of the Church, famous for his translation into Latin (the Vulgate) of the Holy Scriptures. He retired into a monastery at Bethlehem and died in 420 A.D.

For it must needs be that scandals come: but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh.Vae mundo a scandalis! Necesse est enim ut veniant scandala : verumtamen vae homini illi, per quem scandalum venit. 8 And if thy hand, or thy foot scandalize thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame, than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into everlasting fire.Si autem manus tua, vel pes tuus scandalizat te, abscide eum, et projice abs te : bonum tibi est ad vitam ingredi debilem, vel claudum, quam duas manus vel duos pedes habentem mitti in ignem aeternum. 9 And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee. It is better for thee having one eye to enter into life, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.Et si oculus tuus scandalizat te, erue eum, et projice abs te : bonum tibi est cum uno oculo in vitam intrare, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis. 10 See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.Videte ne contemnatis unum ex his pusillis : dico enim vobis, quia angeli eorum in caelis semper vident faciem Patris mei, qui in caelis est.[6] "Shall scandalize": That is, shall put a stumblingblock in their way, and cause them to fall into sin.[7] "It must needs be": Viz., considering the wickedness and corruption of the world.[8] "Scandalize thee": That is, cause thee to offend.Jesus uses strong, figurative language here to teach us how seriously we must take sin. He is not telling us literally to mutilate ourselves. Rather, we must be willing to remove anything from our lives that leads us away from God, even when giving it up is difficult or painful. “Their angels always see the face of my Father”This is one of the most beautiful lines:“See that you despise not one of these little ones: for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”This is one of the biblical foundations for the Christian understanding of guardian angels.Notice the reason Jesus gives for not despising these little ones: they are precious before God.The person whom the world might overlook is not overlooked by God.

He was persecuted by his mother Drahomira and his brother and successor, Boleslas, out of hatred for the Faith. He was murdered by his brother in a church where he was praying A.D. 938.

17 And coming down with them, he stood in a plain place, and the company of his disciples, and a very great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast both of Tyre and Sidon,Et descendens cum illis, stetit in loco campestri, et turba discipulorum ejus, et multitudo copiosa plebis ab omni Judaea, et Jerusalem, et maritima, et Tyri, et Sidonis, 18 Who were come to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases.  34 But the Pharisees hearing that he had silenced the Sadducees, came together:Pharisaei autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducaeis, convenerunt in unum : 35 And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him:et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum : 36 Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege? 37 Jesus said to him: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.Ait illi Jesus : Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua. 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum. 39 And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.Secundum autem simile est huic : Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum. 40 On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets.In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetae. 41 And the Pharisees being gathered together, Jesus asked them,Congregatis autem pharisaeis, interrogavit eos Jesus, 42 Saying: What think you of Christ? whose son is he? 27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck.Factum est autem, cum haec diceret : extollens vocem quaedam mulier de turba dixit illi : Beatus venter qui te portavit, et ubera quae suxisti. 28 But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud.St Peter Nolasko and St Raymond Pennefort had repeated visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary and so were inspired to found with the aid of King James of Aragon the Order of Our Lady of Ransom for the redemption of Christian captives from the infidels. The Church commemorates today this incomparable work of charity.

Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.[18] "Thou art Peter": As St. Peter, by divine revelation, here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of Christ; so in recompense of this faith and profession, our Lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him: viz., that he to whom he had already given the name of Peter, signifying a rock, St. John 1. 42, should be a rock indeed, of invincible strength, for the support of the building of the church; in which building he should be, next to Christ himself, the chief foundation stone, in quality of chief pastor, ruler, and governor; and should have accordingly all fulness of ecclesiastical power, signified by the keys of the kingdom of heaven.[18] "Upon this rock": The words of Christ to Peter, spoken in the vulgar language of the Jews which our Lord made use of, were the same as if he had said in English, Thou art a Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church. So that, by the plain course of the words, Peter is here declared to be the rock, upon which the church was to be built: Christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same. Where also note, that Christ, by building his house, that is, his church, upon a rock, has thereby secured it against all storms and floods, like the wise builder, [Matt 7:24-25].[18] "The gates of hell": That is, the powers of darkness, and whatever Satan can do, either by himself, or his agents. For as the church is here likened to a house, or fortress, built on a rock; so the adverse powers are likened to a contrary house or fortress, the gates of which, that is, the whole strength, and all the efforts it can make, will never be able to prevail over the city or church of Christ. By this promise we are fully assured, that neither idolatry, heresy, nor any pernicious error whatsoever shall at any time prevail over the church of Christ.[19] "Loose upon earth": The loosing the bands of temporal punishments due to sins, is called an indulgence; the power of which is here granted.

He was a religious of the Order of Hermits of St Augustine. He was also Archbishop of Valencia. He gave away to the poor all he possessed. He died 1555 A.D.

9 And when Jesus passed on from hence, he saw a man sitting in the custom house, named Matthew; and he saith to him: Follow me. And he rose up and followed him.Et, cum transiret inde Jesus, vidit hominem sedentem in telonio, Matthaeum nomine. Et ait illi : Sequere me. Et surgens, secutus est eum. 10 And it came to pass as he was sitting at meat in the house, behold many publicans and sinners came, and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.Et factum est, discumbente eo in domo, ecce multi publicani et peccatores venientes, discumbebant cum Jesu, et discipulis ejus. 11 And the Pharisees seeing it, said to his disciples: Why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners?Et videntes pharisaei, dicebant discipulis ejus : Quare cum publicanis et peccatoribus manducat magister vester? 12 But Jesus hearing it, said: They that are in health need not a physician, but they that are ill.At Jesus audiens, ait : Non est opus valentibus medicus, sed male habentibus. 13 Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.Euntes autem discite quid est : Misericordiam volo, et non sacrificium. Non enim veni vocare justos, sed peccatores.St Matthew was a publican at the toll station at Capernaum. The publicans were looked upon as the greatest sinners by the Jews because of their many acts of injustice and extortion. Matthew himself greatly acknowledged the gracious condescension of the Lord to sinners by his humble confession. At Jesus' invitation he promptly joined him. He wrote the first gospel and preached the Good News in Palestine and in Ethiopia, where he was attacked and killed while saying Mass in 60 A.D.

Whose son is he?”They answer:“David's.”That's correct as far as it goes. The Messiah was indeed to be the son of David.But Jesus then quotes Psalm 109:“The Lord said to my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand…”And Jesus asks, essentially:If the Messiah is merely David's descendant, why does David himself call Him “Lord”?That's the puzzle.A son normally comes after his father, and yet David calls this descendant “Lord.”This is much more than a clever argument.Jesus is leading them toward the realization that the Messiah is greater than merely a human descendant of David.He is David's Son and David's Lord.For Christians, that's pointing directly toward the mystery of the Incarnation:Jesus is truly man, descended from David, and truly God.And notice how Matthew places this right after the Greatest Commandment.The Gospel begins:Love God with everything you have.And then ends by asking:Who is Jesus?That's not accidental.The One we are commanded to love above everything else is standing right there before them.Jesus is revealing something about who He is

Hence in a true conversion are joined faith, hope, love, sorrow for sin, and other pious dispositions.

He tells them a parable showing that God exalts whosoever humbles himself.

Et dedit illum matri suae. 16 And there came a fear on them all: and they glorified God, saying: A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people.Accepit autem omnes timor : et magnificabant Deum, dicentes : Quia propheta magnus surrexit in nobis : et quia Deus visitavit plebem suam.Our Lord Jesus Christ has saved us from eternal death, as He once saved the young man of Naim from natural death and doing this He shows the compassion which He feels for our mother the Catholic Church, lamenting over sinners, just as He was moved to pity for the poor widow grieving for her son.

He was of Giustiniani and Bishop and first Patriarch of Venice. He was the "pride and the ornament of the Catholic Episcopate." He died in 1455.

 24 No man can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one, and love the other: or he will sustain the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.Nemo potest duobus dominis servire : aut enim unum odio habebit, et alterum diliget : aut unum sustinebit, et alterum contemnet. Non potestis Deo servire et mammonae. 25 Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment?Ideo dico vobis, ne solliciti sitis animae vestrae quid manducetis, neque corpori vestro quid induamini. He was curate, parish priest, bishop of Mantua, patriarch of Venice. He was elected pope on August 4, 1903. As chief pastor of the Church he realized the value of the liturgy as prayer of the Church and spared no effort to propagate the practice of frequent and daily Communion. He died on August 14, 1914 and canonized on May 29, 1954.

This apostolic king won over his enemies and converted his kingdom to Christianity. He died in 1038, famous for his justice and his boundless charity.

There he lived as a hermit in a vast forest. He was discovered there by King Theodoric and he founded a monestery and was so famous on account of his miracles that many churches were dedicated to him. He died in the 6th century.

They were the Founders of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. He gave himself up to the Mohammedans in order to ransom a Christian. Pope Gregory IX made him cardinal. He died on his return in 1240 AD.

Herodias and her daughter Salome forced Herod to behead St John, the Precurser to the Messiah.

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. He died after serving as bishop for 36 years at Hippo (Africa) in 430 AD.

He was famous for his charity towards children and founded the Piarists or the Order of Clerks Regular of the Poor Schools of the Mother of God for the education of children. He died when he was 92 in the year 1648 A.D.

Et factum est, dum irent, mundati sunt. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was made clean, went back, with a loud voice glorifying God.Unus autem ex illis, ut vidit quia mundatus est, regressus est, cum magna voce magnificans Deum, 16 And he fell on his face before his feet, giving thanks: and this was a Samaritan.et cecidit in faciem ante pedes ejus, gratias agens : et hic erat Samaritanus. 17 And Jesus answering, said, Were not ten made clean? and where are the nine?Respondens autem Jesus, dixit : Nonne decem mundati sunt? et novem ubi sunt? 18 There is no one found to return and give glory to God, but this stranger.Non est inventus qui rediret, et daret gloriam Deo, nisi hic alienigena. 19 And he said to him: Arise, go thy way; for thy faith hath made thee whole.Et ait illi : Surge, vade : quia fides tua te salvum fecit.St Zephyrinus, was the successor of St Victor. He governed the Holy See for eighteen years. He was martyred under Antoine in the year 217.

 12 He said therefore: A certain nobleman went into a far country, to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.Dixit ergo : Homo quidam nobilis abiit in regionem longinquam accipere sibi regnum, et reverti. 13 And calling his ten servants, he gave them ten pounds, and said to them: Trade till I come.Vocatis autem decem servis suis, dedit eis decem mnas, et ait ad illos : Negotiamini dum venio. 14 But his citizens hated him: and they sent an embassage after him, saying: We will not have this man to reign over us.Cives autem ejus oderant eum : et miserunt legationem post illum, dicentes : Nolumus hunc regnare super nos. 15 And it came to pass, that he returned, having received the kingdom: and he commanded his servants to be called, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.Et factum est ut rediret accepto regno : et jussit vocari servos, quibus dedit pecuniam, ut sciret quantum quisque negotiatus esset. 16 And the first came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.Venit autem primus dicens : Domine, mna tua decem mnas acquisivit. 17 And he said to him: Well done, thou good servant, because thou hast been faithful in a little, thou shalt have power over ten cities.Et ait illi : Euge bone serve, quia in modico fuisti fidelis, eris potestatem habens super decem civitates. 18 And the second came, saying: Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.Et alter venit, dicens : Domine, mna tua fecit quinque mnas. 19 And he said to him: Be thou also over five cities.Et huic ait : Et tu esto super quinque civitates. 20 And another came, saying: Lord, behold here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin;Et alter venit, dicens : Domine, ecce mna tua, quam habui repositam in sudario : 21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and thou reapest that which thou didst not sow.timui enim te, quia homo austerus es : tollis quod non posuisti, et metis quod non seminasti. 22 He saith to him: Out of thy own mouth I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping that which I did not sow:Dicit ei : De ore tuo te judico, serve nequam. Sciebas quod ego homo austerus sum, tollens quod non posui, et metens quod non seminavi : 23 And why then didst thou not give my money into the bank, that at my coming, I might have exacted it with usury?et quare non dedisti pecuniam meam ad mensam, ut ego veniens cum usuris utique exegissem illam? 24 And he said to them that stood by: Take the pound away from him, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.Et astantibus dixit : Auferte ab illo mnam, et date illi qui decem mnas habet. 25 And they said to him: Lord, he hath ten pounds.Et dixerunt ei : Domine, habet decem mnas. 26 But I say to you, that to every one that hath shall be given, and he shall abound: and from him that hath not, even that which he hath, shall be taken from him.Dico autem vobis, quia omni habenti dabitur, et abundabit : ab eo autem qui non habet, et quod habet auferetur ab eo.Louis IX was the son of the pious queen of France, Blanche. She educated him to be a model for all kings in faith, courage and love of justice. He undertook two crusades to reconquer the Holy Land. He died from the plague in Tuniswhich decimated his army in Africa. He was the most Christian king and he reigned from 1226 to 1270. In the parable, the money represents everything God entrusts to us—our abilities, opportunities, time, faith, responsibilities, and circumstances.He's saying, essentially:“What did you do with what I gave you?”The third servant's problem isn't that he lost the money. He actually kept it safe. His failure was that he did nothing with it. He allowed fear to turn his master's gift into something buried and useless.That can sound harsh until you see the spiritual principle underneath it.Grace is meant to bear fruit.

His name means son of Tholemy. He preached in India and Armenia. He was flayed alive and then beheaded in AD 71 for his faith.

The angels shall go out, and shall separate the wicked from among the just.Sic erit in consummatione saeculi : exibunt angeli, et separabunt malos de medio justorum, 50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.et mittent eos in caminum ignis : ibi erit fletus, et stridor dentium. 51 Have ye understood all these things? Dicunt ei : Etiam. 52 He said unto them: Therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven, is like to a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old.Ait illis : Ideo omnis scriba doctus in regno caelorum, similis est homini patrifamilias, qui profert de thesauro suo nova et vetera.St Jane Francis was a bright example of a daughter, spouse, mother and widow. She was born in Dijon. She founded the Order of the Visitation guided by St Francis de Sales. She died at Moulins 1641.

13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men.Vos estis sal terrae. This Hebrew word, amen, is here retained by the example and authority of all the four Evangelists. It is used by our Lord as a strong asseveration, and affirmation of the truth.St Bernard was born of noble Bergundian parents. He was a monk of the Cistercian Order, a branch of the Benedictine Order. He became Abbot of a famous monastery of Clairvaux, which he founded. He produced writings and sermons and letters that rendered invaluable services to the Church. He also preached the second crusade and died at Clairvaux in 1153.

Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.Beati servi illi quos, cum venerit dominus, invenerit vigilantes : amen dico vobis, quod praecinget se, et faciet illos discumbere, et transiens ministrabit illis. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.Et si venerit in secunda vigilia, et si in tertia vigilia venerit, et ita invenerit, beati sunt servi illi. 39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam. 40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.Et vos estote parati : quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet.St John Eudes was born in Normandy and was educated by the Jesuits. He was ordained a priest and he founded the Congregation of the Priests of Jesus and Mary, called Eudists, and the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity. He was a preacher and writer and he promoted public devotion to the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He died in the year 1680.

And Jesus said to him: Go, and do thou in like manner.At ille dixit : Qui fecit misericordiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus : Vade, et tu fac similiter.St Agapitus was martyred when he was only 15 years old. He endured many cruel tortures and was beheaded at Praeneste in Italy in 275 A.D.

He went to Rome and met St Dominic and was admitted into the Order of Friars Preachers. He labored for the establishment of the Order in Poland and died 1257 A.D.

And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:Et factum est, ut audivit salutationem Mariae Elisabeth, exsultavit infans in utero ejus : et repleta est Spiritu Sancto Elisabeth : 42 And she cried out with a loud voice, and said: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.et exclamavit voce magna, et dixit : Benedicta tu inter mulieres, et benedictus fructus ventris tui. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?Et unde hoc mihi, ut veniat mater Domini mei ad me? 44 For behold as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.Ecce enim ut facta est vox salutationis tuae in auribus meis, exsultavit in gaudio infans in utero meo. 45 And blessed art thou that hast believed, because those things shall be accomplished that were spoken to thee by the Lord.Et beata, quae credidisti, quoniam perficientur ea, quae dicta sunt tibi a Domino. 46 And Mary said: My soul doth magnify the Lord.Et ait Maria : Magnificat anima mea Dominum : 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.et exsultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo. 48 Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae : ecce enim ex hoc beatam me dicent omnes generationes, 49 Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.quia fecit mihi magna qui potens est : et sanctum nomen ejus, 50 And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him.et misericordia ejus a progenie in progenies timentibus eum.[48] "Shall call me blessed": These words are a prediction of that honour which the church in all ages should pay to the Blessed Virgin. Let Protestants examine whether they are any way concerned in this prophecy.Mary was cared for by St John after our Lord's ressurection. Her life was spent in helping the Apostles and praying for the conversion of the world. On the third day after Mary's death when the Apostles gathered around her tomb they found it empty. The sacred body had been carried up to celestial paradise. Jesus Himself came to conduct her there; the whole court of Jesus came to welcome her with triumphant songs the Mother of the Divine Word.
