The efficacy of their past merits and present prayers is greatly increased when offered to God in close association with the merits and prayers of our Lord. Therefore the Church commemorates on this day all the Saints in heaven without exception , and thus honors also those who are unknown and who have no public recognition in the Liturgy.

They both suffered martyrdom in Persia in the fist century. St Jude wrote a short Epistle in which he exhorts the faithful to beware heretics.

For many years he labored in Catalonia, for six years in Cuba as Archbishop of Santiago, and finally in Madrid. He died in exile in France in 1870.

Famous for his heroic charity and zeal, he died A.D. 1473.

Converted, he became the missionary companion of St Paul, who called him "the most dear physician" and "his fellow laborour". After the death of his teacher, according to reliable authority, he preached the Gospel in Achaia, where he died at a ripe old age. He earned undying glory by his writing of the Third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles.

Jesus appeared to her in numerous visions, displaying to her His Sacred Heart, sometimes burning as a furnace, and sometimes torn and bleeding on account of the coldness and sins of men. In 1675 the great revelation was made to her that she, in union with Father de la Colombiere, SJ, was to be the chief instrument for instituting the Feast of the Sacred Heart and for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart throughout the world. She died on October 17, A.D. 1690.

44 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field. As the Reformer of the Carmelites, she re-established the primitive observance of their ancient Rule. On account of her invaluable works on mystical Theology, she may be considered one of the greatest Doctors of the Church. She died A.D. 1582.

And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.St Callixtus I, successor of St Zephyrinus, instituted the Ember-Day Fasts, and provided for the honorable internment of the Martyrs. He himself suffered martyrdom under Alexander Severus A.D. 223.

 35 Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.Sint lumbi vestri praecincti, et lucernae ardentes in manibus vestris, 36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis : ut, cum venerit et pulsaverit, confestim aperiant ei. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. He died A.D. 1066.

The Priests have received power to heal souls, to pardon sinners.

43 And having fulfilled the days, when they returned, the child Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not.consummatisque diebus, cum redirent, remansit puer Jesus in Jerusalem, et non cognoverunt parentes ejus. 44 And thinking that he was in the company, they came a day's journey, and sought him among their kinsfolks and acquaintance.Existimantes autem illum esse in comitatu, venerunt iter diei, et requirebant eum inter cognatos et notos. 45 And not finding him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking him.Et non invenientes, regressi sunt in Jerusalem, requirentes eum. 46 And it came to pass, that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, hearing them, and asking them questions.Et factum est, post triduum invenerunt illum in templo sedentem in medio doctorum, audientem illos, et interrogantem eos. 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his wisdom and his answers.Stupebant autem omnes qui eum audiebant, super prudentia et responsis ejus. 48 And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.Et descendit cum eis, et venit Nazareth : et erat subditus illis. Et mater ejus conservabat omnia verba haec in corde suo.To commemorate in liturgy the fifteenth centenary of the Council of Ephesus (held in A.D. 431), which vindicated the title of Theotokos or "Mother of God" for our Lady, Pope Pius Xi in the year 1931 instituted this Feast to be observed by the whole Church.

He was the third General of his Order and died at Rome A.D. 1572.

He died at Rome on October 9 A.D. 1609. St John Leondardi was beatified by Pope Pius XI. Pius XII extended his feast to the whole Catholic world A.D. 1940.

He propagated this prayer in obedience to a revelation received from the Blessed Virgin, to whom he had recourse for this purpose, about the war 1206, and to him we owe the spread of a devotion, in the Christian world. The decisive defeat of the Turks at the famous battle of Lepanto (A.D. 1571) and at Belgrade (A.D. 1716) gave occasion to the institution of this Feast and to its extension to the Universal Church.

Francis was born in a stable, and heralded into the world by angelic song; he commenced his work with twelve followers, whom he sent two by two to preach the Gospel. He espoused most high Poverty, and received in his own body the marks of the Sacred Passion on Mount Alvernia. Francis' message of charity, peace and justice was heard by men and women of every grade of society, and thousands in consequence desired to leave all and follow Francis in the footsteps of Jesus Christ. Therefore he founded the Order of Friars Minor, the Second Order of the Poor Clares, and the Tertiaries or Third Order which bear his name. St Francis died about sunset on Saturday, 3rd Ocober 1226.

At the age of fifteen she entered the Carmel of Lisieux, living there in holiness and humility. Her whole ambition was to love God perfectly and to conquer souls for Jesus. She died in the odour of sanctity, promising to "spend her heaven in doing good on earth" (1873-1897). His Holiness Pope Pius XI delcared her blessed on the 29th of April 1923, and canonized her on the 17th of March 1925.

Their importance in the Church was formerly very great. They are fixed on the Wednesday, Friday and Saturday ; after the first Sunday of Lent for Spring after Whitsunday for Summer, after the Feast of the Elevation of the Cross (14th September) for Autumn, and after the Third Sunday of Advent for Winter. They are intended also to consecrate to God the various seasons in nature, and to prepare by penance those who are about to be ordained. Ordinations generally take place on the Ember Days. The faithful ought to pray on these days for good Priests. The Ember Days were once fastdays of obligation.

Non enim veni vocare justos, sed peccatores.St Matthew was at first a publican at the toll at Capernaum. The publicans on account of their many acts of injustice and extortion, were looked upon as the greatest sinners by many of the Jews. Matthew himself by his humble confession gratefully acknowledged the gracious condescension of the Lord to sinners. At his Matser's invitation he promptly joined Him. He wrote the first Gospel and preached the good news in Palestine and Ethiopia, where he was attacked and killed while saying Mass A.D. 60.

At the present time, they fall always after the third Sunday in September. (Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross). This date nearly coincides with the end of summer, which for the ancients was the 12th of September, and with the opening of autumn on September 13th. The Ember Days of winter, spring and summer do not coincide so exactly with the beginning of the respective seasons. The Blessed Virgin Mary by repeated visions inspired St Peter Nolasco and St Raymond of Pennafort to found with the aid of King James of Aragon the Order of Our Lady of Ransom for the redemption of Christian captives from the infidels. The Church commorates today this incomparable work of charity.

He was martyred, and was buried next to the Prince of the Apostles, A.D. 78.

26 And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God into a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,In mense autem sexto, missus est angelus Gabriel a Deo in civitatem Galilaeae, cui nomen Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.ad virginem desponsatam viro, cui nomen erat Joseph, de domo David : et nomen virginis Maria. 28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit : Ave gratia plena : Dominus tecum : benedicta tu in mulieribus. 29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying, and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.Quae cum audisset, turbata est in sermone ejus, et cogitabat qualis esset ista salutatio. 30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found grace with God.Et ait angelus ei : Ne timeas, Maria : invenisti enim gratiam apud Deum. 31 Behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and shalt bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name Jesus.Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium, et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever.hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris ejus : et regnabit in domo Jacob in aeternum, 33 And of his kingdom there shall be no end.et regni ejus non erit finis. 34 And Mary said to the angel: How shall this be done, because I know not man?Dixit autem Maria ad angelum : Quomodo fiet istud, quoniam virum non cognosco? 35 And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.Et respondens angelus dixit ei : Spiritus Sanctus superveniet in te, et virtus Altissimi obumbrabit tibi. Ideoque et quod nascetur ex te sanctum, vocabitur Filius Dei. 36 And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that is called barren:Et ecce Elisabeth cognata tua, et ipsa concepit filium in senectute sua : et hic mensis sextus est illi, quae vocatur sterilis : 37 Because no word shall be impossible with God.quia non erit impossibile apud Deum omne verbum. 38 And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.Dixit autem Maria : Ecce ancilla Domini : fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.
