Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis.[18] "Thou art Peter": As St. Peter, by divine revelation, here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of Christ; so in recompense of this faith and profession, our Lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him: viz., that he to whom he had already given the name of Peter, signifying a rock, St. John 1. 42, should be a rock indeed, of invincible strength, for the support of the building of the church; in which building he should be, next to Christ himself, the chief foundation stone, in quality of chief pastor, ruler, and governor; and should have accordingly all fulness of ecclesiastical power, signified by the keys of the kingdom of heaven.[18] "Upon this rock": The words of Christ to Peter, spoken in the vulgar language of the Jews which our Lord made use of, were the same as if he had said in English, Thou art a Rock, and upon this rock I will build my church. So that, by the plain course of the words, Peter is here declared to be the rock, upon which the church was to be built: Christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same. Where also note, that Christ, by building his house, that is, his church, upon a rock, has thereby secured it against all storms and floods, like the wise builder, [Matt 7:24-25].[18] "The gates of hell": That is, the powers of darkness, and whatever Satan can do, either by himself, or his agents. For as the church is here likened to a house, or fortress, built on a rock; so the adverse powers are likened to a contrary house or fortress, the gates of which, that is, the whole strength, and all the efforts it can make, will never be able to prevail over the city or church of Christ. By this promise we are fully assured, that neither idolatry, heresy, nor any pernicious error whatsoever shall at any time prevail over the church of Christ.[19] "Loose upon earth": The loosing the bands of temporal punishments due to sins, is called an indulgence; the power of which is here granted.

He received from his Father all power in heaven and in earth: and in virtue of this power, he sends them (even as his Father sent him, St. John 20. 21) to teach and disciple, not one, but all nations; and instruct them in all truths: and that he may assist them effectually in the execution of this commission, he promises to be with them, not for three or four hundred years only, but all days, even to the consummation of the world. How then could the Catholic Church ever go astray; having always with her pastors, as is here promised, Christ himself, who is the way, the truth, and the life. St. John 14.

And although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus saith to them: Come, and dine. And none of them who were at meat, durst ask him: Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. 13 And Jesus cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish in like manner. 14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead.

Or, figuratively, the sun here spoken of is the sun of justice, Christ Jesus our Lord, who was risen before their coming.

Holy Saturday is liturgically a day of deepest mourning, a day which the Church spends at our Lord's sepulchre, meditating on His Sacred Passion and Death. There is no Mass; the sacred altar is bare.

Hence in a true conversion are joined faith, hope, love, sorrow for sin, and other pious dispositions.

For some said: He is a good man. And others said: No, but he seduceth the people.Et murmur multum erat in turba de eo. Quidam enim dicebant : Quia bonus est. Alii autem dicebant : Non, sed seducit turbas. 13 Yet no man spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.Nemo tamen palam loquebatur de illo propter metum Judaeorum.

46 Which of you shall convict me of sin? If I say the truth to you, why do you not believe me?Quis ex vobis arguet me de peccato? 12 Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him:Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Judaeorum comprehenderunt Jesum, et ligaverunt eum. 13 And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year.Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum : erat enim socer Caiphae, qui erat pontifex anni illius. 14 Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people.Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judaeis : Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo. 15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariae : et introduxit Petrum. 17 The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? Dicit ille : Non sum. 18 Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself.Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas, quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se : erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. 19 The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus. 20 Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing.Respondit ei Jesus : Ego palam locutus sum mundo : ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Judaei conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sum nihil.

Christ raises Lazarus to life.

18 Now the generation of Christ was in this wise. When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child, of the Holy Ghost.Christi autem generatio sic erat : cum esset desponsata mater ejus Maria Joseph, antequam convenirent inventa est in utero habens de Spiritu Sancto. 19 Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately.Joseph autem vir ejus cum esset justus, et nollet eam traducere, voluit occulte dimittere eam. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.Haec autem eo cogitante, ecce angelus Domini apparuit in somnis ei, dicens : Joseph, fili David, noli timere accipere Mariam conjugem tuam : quod enim in ea natum est, de Spiritu Sancto est. 21 And she shall bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name JESUS. For he shall save his people from their sins.Pariet autem filium : et vocabis nomen ejus Jesum : ipse enim salvum faciet populum suum a peccatis eorum.[16] "The husband of Mary": The Evangelist gives us rather the pedigree of St. Joseph, than that of the blessed Virgin, to conform to the custom of the Hebrews, who in their genealogies took no notice of women; but as they were near akin, the pedigree of the one sheweth that of the other.

He gives sight to the man born blind.

In like manner also of the fishes, as much as they would.Accepit ergo Jesus panes : et cum gratias egisset, distribuit discumbentibus : similiter et ex piscibus quantum volebant. 12 And when they were filled, he said to his disciples: Gather up the fragments that remain, lest they be lost.Ut autem impleti sunt, dixit discipulis suis : Colligite quae superaverunt fragmenta, ne pereant. 13 They gathered up therefore, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above to them that had eaten.Collegerunt ergo, et impleverunt duodecim cophinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus hordeaceis, quae superfuerunt his qui manducaverant. 14 Now those men, when they had seen what a miracle Jesus had done, said: This is of a truth the prophet, that is to come into the world.Illi ergo homines cum vidissent quod Jesus fecerat signum, dicebant : Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum. 15 Jesus therefore, when he knew that they would come to take him by force, and make him king, fled again into the mountain himself alone.Jesus ergo cum cognovisset quia venturi essent ut raperent eum, et facerent eum regem, fugit iterum in montem ipse solus.

But what sayest thou?In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis hujusmodi lapidare. Tu ergo quid dicis? 6 And this they said tempting him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bowing himself down, wrote with his finger on the ground.Hoc autem dicebant tentantes eum, ut possent accusare eum. Jesus autem inclinans se deorsum, digito scribebat in terra. 7 When therefore they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said to them: He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.Cum ergo perseverarent interrogantes eum, erexit se, et dixit eis : Qui sine peccato est vestrum, primus in illam lapidem mittat. 8 And again stooping down, he wrote on the ground.Et iterum se inclinans, scribebat in terra. 9 But they hearing this, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest. And Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst.Audientes autem unus post unum exibant, incipientes a senioribus : et remansit solus Jesus, et mulier in medio stans. 10 Then Jesus lifting up himself, said to her: Woman, where are they that accused thee? Hath no man condemned thee?Erigens autem se Jesus, dixit ei : Mulier, ubi sunt qui te accusabant? nemo te condemnavit? 11 Who said: No man, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee. During these forty days of Lent the Church entreats our Lord Jesus Christ to give us the living water about which he spoke to the woman of Samaria near Jacob's well, the water which quenches the thirst of our souls forever.

38 And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. For God said: 4 Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death. 5 But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.[5] "The gift": That is, the offering that I shall make to God, shall be instead of that which should be expended for thy profit. This tradition of the Pharisees was calculated to enrich themselves; by exempting children from giving any further assistance to their parents. 6 And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition. 7 Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying: 8 This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me. 9 And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men. 10 And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand.[9] "Commandments of men": The doctrines and commandments here reprehended are such as are either contrary to the law of God, (as that of neglecting parents, under pretence of giving to God,) or at least are frivolous, unprofitable, and no ways conducing to true piety, as that of often washing hands, etc., without regard to the purity of the heart. But as to the rules and ordinances of the holy church, touching fasts, festivals, etc., these are no ways repugnant to, but highly agreeable to God's holy word, and all Christian piety: neither are they to be counted among the doctrines and commandments of men; because they proceed not from mere human authority; but from that which Christ has established in his church; whose pastors he has commanded us to hear and obey, even as himself. St. Luke 10. 16; St. Matt. 18. 17. 11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 12 Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized? 13 But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit. 15 And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.[11] "Not that which goeth into": No uncleanness in meat, nor any dirt contracted by eating it with unwashed hands, can defile the soul: but sin alone; or a disobedience of the heart to the ordinance and will of God. And thus when Adam took the forbidden fruit, it was not the apple, which entered into the mouth, but the disobedience to the law of God which defiled him. The same is to be said if a Jew, in the time of the old law, had eaten swine's flesh; or a Christian convert, in the days of the apostles, contrary to their ordinance, had eaten blood; or if any of the faithful at present should transgress the ordinance of God's church, by breaking the fasts: for in all these cases the soul would be defiled; not indeed by that which goeth into the mouth; but by the disobedience of the heart, in wilfully transgressing the ordinance of God, or of those who have their authority from him. 16 But he said: Are you also yet without understanding? 17 Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy? 18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man. 19 For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. 20 These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.

15 But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.Si autem peccaverit in te frater tuus, vade, et corripe eum inter te, et ipsum solum : si te audierit, lucratus eris fratrem tuum. 16 And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand.Si autem te non audierit, adhibe tecum adhuc unum, vel duos, ut in ore duorum, vel trium testium stet omne verbum. 17 And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.Quod si non audierit eos : dic ecclesiae. Si autem ecclesiam non audierit, sit tibi sicut ethnicus et publicanus. 18 Amen I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven.Amen dico vobis, quaecumque alligaveritis super terram, erunt ligata et in caelo : et quaecumque solveritis super terram, erunt soluta et in caelo. 19 Again I say to you, that if two of you shall consent upon earth, concerning any thing whatsoever they shall ask, it shall be done to them by my Father who is in heaven.Iterum dico vobis, quia si duo ex vobis consenserint super terram, de omni re quamcumque petierint, fiet illis a Patre meo, qui in caelis est. 20 For where there are two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.Ubi enim sunt duo vel tres congregati in nomine meo, ibi sum in medio eorum. 21 Then came Peter unto him and said: Lord, how often shall my brother offend against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?Tunc accedens Petrus ad eum, dixit : Domine, quoties peccabit in me frater meus, et dimittam ei? usque septies? 22 Jesus saith to him: I say not to thee, till seven times; but till seventy times seven times.Dicit illi Jesus : Non dico tibi usque septies : sed usque septuagies septies.[20] "There am I in the midst of them": This is understood of such assemblies only as are gathered in the name and authority of Christ; and in unity of the church of Christ. 23 And he said to them: Doubtless you will say to me this similitude: Physician, heal thyself: as great things as we have heard done in Capharnaum, do also here in thy own country.Et ait illis : Utique dicetis mihi hanc similitudinem : Medice cura teipsum : quanta audivimus facta in Capharnaum, fac et hic in patria tua. 24 And he said: Amen I say to you, that no prophet is accepted in his own country.Ait autem : Amen dico vobis, quia nemo propheta acceptus est in patria sua. 25 In truth I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elias in Israel, when heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there was a great famine throughout all the earth.In veritate dico vobis, multae viduae erant in diebus Eliae in Israel, quando clausum est caelum annis tribus et mensibus sex, cum facta esset fames magna in omni terra : 26 And to none of them was Elias sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, to a widow woman.et ad nullam illarum missus est Elias, nisi in Sarepta Sidoniae, ad mulierem viduam. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet: and none of them was cleansed but Naaman the Syrian.Et multi leprosi erant in Israel sub Elisaeo propheta : et nemo eorum mundatus est nisi Naaman Syrus. 28 And all they in the synagogue, hearing these things, were filled with anger.Et repleti sunt omnes in synagoga ira, haec audientes. 29 And they rose up and thrust him out of the city; and they brought him to the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.Et surrexerunt, et ejecerunt illum extra civitatem : et duxerunt illum usque ad supercilium montis, super quem civitas illorum erat aedificata, ut praecipitarent eum. 30 But he passing through the midst of them, went his way.Ipse autem transiens per medium illorum, ibat.The Gospel speaks to us of Naaman, the valiant general of the King of Syria's army. He was cured by bathing in the Jordan, although he did not belong to the race of Israel. Later on Jesus was to plunge himself into the same river and to communicate a sanctifying virtue to its waters. Naaman, therefore, is a figure of the heathen whom the Church by baptism cures of the leprosy of sin. Peter, says Tertullian, has baptised in the Tiber, and those that he has cleansed from leprosy of sin, have abandoned the waters of Damascus, by which is mean their sensual life. Let us renew ourselves in the spirit of baptism by purifying our hearts in the salutary bath of penitence. This will cure them of the leprosy of the soul called sin.

14 And he was casting out a devil, and the same was dumb: and when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes were in admiration at it:Et erat ejiciens daemonium, et illud erat mutum. Et cum ejecisset daemonium, locutus est mutus, et admiratae sunt turbae. 15 But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils.Quidam autem ex eis dixerunt : In Beelzebub principe daemoniorum ejicit daemonia. 16 And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven.Et alii tentantes, signum de caelo quaerebant ab eo. 17 But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself, shall be brought to desolation, and house upon house shall fall.Ipse autem ut vidit cogitationes eorum, dixit eis : Omne regnum in seipsum divisum desolabitur, et domus supra domum cadet. 18 And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say, that through Beelzebub I cast out devils.Si autem et Satanas in seipsum divisus est, quomodo stabit regnum ejus? quia dicitis in Beelzebub me ejicere daemonia. 19 Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub; by whom do your children cast them out? Et fiunt novissima hominis illius pejora prioribus. 27 And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck.Factum est autem, cum haec diceret : extollens vocem quaedam mulier de turba dixit illi : Beatus venter qui te portavit, et ubera quae suxisti. 28 But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud.

11 And he said: A certain man had two sons: 12 And the younger of them said to his father: Father, give me the portion of substance that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his substance. 13 And not many days after, the younger son, gathering all together, went abroad into a far country: and there wasted his substance, living riotously. 14 And after he had spent all, there came a mighty famine in that country; and he began to be in want. 15 And he went and cleaved to one of the citizens of that country. And he sent him into his farm to feed swine. 16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks the swine did eat; and no man gave unto him. 17 And returning to himself, he said: How many hired servants in my father's house abound with bread, and I here perish with hunger? 18 I will arise, and will go to my father, and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee: 19 I am not worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants. 20 And rising up he came to his father. And when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and running to him fell upon his neck, and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee, I am not now worthy to be called thy son. 22 And the father said to his servants: Bring forth quickly the first robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat and make merry: 24 Because this my son was dead, and is come to life again: was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elder son was in the field, and when he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing: 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him: Thy brother is come, and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe. 28 And he was angry, and would not go in. His father therefore coming out began to entreat him. 29 And he answering, said to his father: Behold, for so many years do I serve thee, and I have never transgressed thy commandment, and yet thou hast never given me a kid to make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son is come, who hath devoured his substance with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf. 31 But he said to him: Son, thou art always with me, and all I have is thine. 32 But it was fit that we should make merry and be glad, for this thy brother was dead and is come to life again; he was lost, and is found.Parable of the prodigal son. The elder son is the Jewish element of the primitive church which is scandalised at the vocation of the Gentiles; the prodigal son is the pagan element.

33 Hear ye another parable. There was a man an householder, who planted a vineyard, and made a hedge round about it, and dug in it a press, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen; and went into a strange country.Aliam parabolam audite : Homo erat paterfamilias, qui plantavit vineam, et sepem circumdedit ei, et fodit in ea torcular, et aedificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est. 34 And when the time of the fruits drew nigh, he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof.Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus ejus. 35 And the husbandmen laying hands on his servants, beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.Et agricolae, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt. 36 Again he sent other servants more than the former; and they did to them in like manner.Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter. 37 And last of all he sent to them his son, saying: They will reverence my son.Novissime autem misit ad eos filium suum, dicens : Verebuntur filium meum. 38 But the husbandmen seeing the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and we shall have his inheritance.Agricolae autem videntes filium dixerunt intra se : Hic est haeres, venite, occidamus eum, et habebimus haereditatem ejus. 39 And taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt. 40 When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen?Cum ergo venerit dominus vineae, quid faciet agricolis illis? 41 They say to him: He will bring those evil men to an evil end; and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen, that shall render him the fruit in due season.Aiunt illi : Malos male perdet : et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis. 42 Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? 19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen; and feasted sumptuously every day.Homo quidam erat dives, qui induebatur purpura et bysso, et epulabatur quotidie splendide. 20 And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,Et erat quidam mendicus, nomine Lazarus, qui jacebat ad januam ejus, ulceribus plenus, 21 Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and no one did give him; moreover the dogs came, and licked his sores.cupiens saturari de micis quae cadebant de mensa divitis, et nemo illi dabat : sed et canes veniebant, et lingebant ulcera ejus. 22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. Mortuus est autem et dives, et sepultus est in inferno. 23 And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom:Elevans autem oculos suos, cum esset in tormentis, vidit Abraham a longe, et Lazarum in sinu ejus : 24 And he cried, and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.et ipse clamans dixit : Pater Abraham, miserere mei, et mitte Lazarum ut intingat extremum digiti sui in aquam, ut refrigeret linguam meam, quia crucior in hac flamma. 25 And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted; and thou art tormented.Et dixit illi Abraham : Fili, recordare quia recepisti bona in vita tua, et Lazarus similiter mala : nunc autem hic consolatur, tu vero cruciaris : 26 And besides all this, between us and you, there is fixed a great chaos: so that they who would pass from hence to you, cannot, nor from thence come hither.et in his omnibus inter nos et vos chaos magnum firmatum est : ut hi qui volunt hinc transire ad vos, non possint, neque inde huc transmeare. 27 And he said: Then, father, I beseech thee, that thou wouldst send him to my father's house, for I have five brethren,Et ait : Rogo ergo te, pater, ut mittas eum in domum patris mei : 28 That he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torments.habeo enim quinque fratres : ut testetur illis, ne et ipsi veniant in hunc locum tormentorum. 29 And Abraham said to him: They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.Et ait illi Abraham : Habent Moysen et prophetas : audiant illos. 30 But he said: No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will do penance.At ille dixit : Non, pater Abraham : sed si quis ex mortuis ierit ad eos, poenitentiam agent. 31 And he said to him: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe, if one rise again from the dead.Ait autem illi : Si Moysen et prophetas non audiunt, neque si quis ex mortuis resurrexerit, credent.[22] "Abraham's bosom": The place of rest, where the souls of the saints resided, till Christ had opened heaven by his death.

17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart, and said to them:Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis : 18 Behold we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death.Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte, 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and scourged, and crucified, and the third day he shall rise again.et tradent eum gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget. 20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, adoring and asking something of him.Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedaei cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo. 21 Who said to her: What wilt thou? She saith to him: Say that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left, in thy kingdom.Qui dixit ei : Quid vis? Ait illi : Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo. 22 And Jesus answering, said: You know not what you ask. Can you drink the chalice that I shall drink? They say to him: We can.Respondens autem Jesus, dixit : Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei : Possumus. 23 He saith to them: My chalice indeed you shall drink; but to sit on my right or left hand, is not mine to give to you, but to them for whom it is prepared by my Father.Ait illis : Calicem quidem meum bibetis : sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo. 24 And the ten hearing it, were moved with indignation against the two brethren.Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus. 25 But Jesus called them to him, and said: You know that the princes of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that are the greater, exercise power upon them.Jesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait : Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum : et qui majores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos. 26 It shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be the greater among you, let him be your minister:Non ita erit inter vos : sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister : 27 And he that will be first among you, shall be your servant.et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus. 28 Even as the Son of man is not come to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a redemption for many.Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis.Jesus foretells His Passion and Ressurection. He will make us participants in His Resurrection if we die to our sins.

For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.Omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut videantur ab hominibus : dilatant enim phylacteria sua, et magnificant fimbrias. 6 And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues,Amant autem primos recubitus in coenis, et primas cathedras in synagogis, 7 And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi.et salutationes in foro, et vocari ab hominibus Rabbi. 8 But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master; and all you are brethren.Vos autem nolite vocari Rabbi : unus est enim magister vester, omnes autem vos fratres estis. 9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven.Et patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram : unus est enim pater vester qui in caelis est. 10 Neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, Christ.Nec vocemini magistri : quia magister vester unus est, Christus. 11 He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant.Qui major est vestrum, erit minister vester. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.Qui autem se exaltaverit, humiliabitur : et qui se humiliaverit, exaltabitur.[5] "Phylacteries": that is, parchments, on which they wrote the ten commandments, and carried them on their foreheads before their eyes: which the Pharisees affected to wear broader than other men; so to seem more zealous for the law.[9] "Call none your father upon earth": Neither be ye called masters. The meaning is that our Father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded, than any father upon earth: and no master to be followed, who would lead us away from Christ. But this does not hinder but that we are by the law of God to have a due respect both for our parents and spiritual fathers, (1 Cor. 4. 15) and for our masters and teachers.

21 Again therefore Jesus said to them: I go, and you shall seek me, and you shall die in your sin. Whither I go, you cannot come.Dixit ergo iterum eis Jesus : Ego vado, et quaeretis me, et in peccato vestro moriemini. Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire. 22 The Jews therefore said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Whither I go, you cannot come?Dicebant ergo Judaei : Numquid interficiet semetipsum, quia dixit : Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire? 23 And he said to them: You are from beneath, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.Et dicebat eis : Vos de deorsum estis, ego de supernis sum. Vos de mundo hoc estis, ego non sum de hoc mundo. 24 Therefore I said to you, that you shall die in your sins. For if you believe not that I am he, you shall die in your sin.Dixi ergo vobis quia moriemini in peccatis vestris : si enim non credideritis quia ego sum, moriemini in peccato vestro. 25 They said therefore to him: Who art thou? Jesus said to them: The beginning, who also speak unto you.Dicebant ergo ei : Tu quis es? Dixit eis Jesus : Principium, qui et loquor vobis. 26 Many things I have to speak and to judge of you. But he that sent me, is true: and the things I have heard of him, these same I speak in the world.Multa habeo de vobis loqui, et judicare; sed qui me misit, verax est; et ego quae audivi ab eo, haec loquor in mundo. 27 And they understood not, that he called God his Father.Et non cognoverunt quia Patrem ejus dicebat Deum. 28 Jesus therefore said to them: When you shall have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know, that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father hath taught me, these things I speak:Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Cum exaltaveris Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetis quia ego sum, et a meipso facio nihil, sed sicut docuit me Pater, haec loquor : 29 And he that sent me, is with me, and he hath not left me alone: for I do always the things that please him.et qui me misit, mecum est, et non reliquit me solum : quia ego quae placita sunt ei, facio semper.

1 And after six days Jesus taketh unto him Peter and James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart:Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem fratrem ejus, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum : 2 And he was transfigured before them. And his face did shine as the sun: and his garments became white as snow.et transfiguratus est ante eos. Et resplenduit facies ejus sicut sol : vestimenta autem ejus facta sunt alba sicut nix. 3 And behold there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking with him.Et ecce apparuerunt illis Moyses et Elias cum eo loquentes. 4 And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.Respondens autem Petrus, dixit ad Jesum : Domine, bonum est nos hic esse : si vis, faciamus tria tabernacula, tibi unum, Moysi unum, et Eliae unum. 5 And as he was yet speaking, behold a bright cloud overshadowed them. And lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased: hear ye him.Adhuc eo loquente, ecce nubes lucida obumbravit eos. Et ecce vox de nube, dicens : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi bene complacui : ipsum audite. 6 And the disciples hearing, fell upon their face, and were very much afraid.Et audientes discipuli ceciderunt in faciem suam, et timuerunt valde. 7 And Jesus came and touched them: and said to them, Arise, and fear not.Et accessit Jesus, et tetigit eos : dixitque eis : Surgite, et nolite timere. 8 And they lifting up their eyes saw no one but only Jesus.Levantes autem oculos suos, neminem viderunt, nisi solum Jesum. 9 And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: Tell the vision to no man, till the Son of man be risen from the dead.Et descendentibus illis de monte, praecepit eis Jesus, dicens : Nemini dixeritis visionem, donec Filius hominis a mortuis resurgat.
