Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we finish our discussion of Sacred Music in the Liturgy. There has long been tension between the creative and innovative developments of music with the need to regulate what is appropriate and fitting for use during the Holy Sacrifice. Does this mean that we need to only use music that has been composed centuries ago? What about some of the hymns that we have grown up with – are they appropriate? To answer these and other questions, we discuss what type of music is and is not proper during Mass. A meditation by Venerable Fulton J. Sheen on the Mass as the re-presentation of Christ's Passion on Calvary
Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we begin a new section examining the externals that surround the Mass, like vestments, the church building, and starting today, sacred music. From antiquity, music has been a part of worship. In fact, even false religions recognize the importance of music in their respective devotions and rites. Today in the first of two episodes on music and the Mass, we explore the history of music in sacred worship, starting with Jewish ceremonies and the Psalms, leading up to the present day. We also start to examine the various kinds of music in a sung Mass. Today we continue the section of the podcast series where we will go step by step through the Mass to look at the various sections of the Liturgy. In this week's episode, we discover the richness of the Offertory prayers and rubrics. What are the various prayers said and what are they for? And which of the prayers perfectly encapsulates the entire reason for the Mass? We also examine the symbolism of various actions, such as placing a few drops of water with the wine, the hiding of the paten, and even details such as where the priest is supposed to look during prayers. Imagine life as a giant, ever-changing canvas, where colors shift and blend, sometimes beyond our control. This Sunday, as part of our “Art and Soul” series, we will explore this theme in our service titled “The Rest is Still Unwritten.” We'll learn how to take life's unexpected twists and turns and turn them into something beautiful. Our guest artist, Adam Podd, a talented pianist and music director from Brooklyn, will join us to share his experiences of making music a shared, communal joy, even during challenging times. We'll also hear from Caren Stelson, an award-winning children's book author, and Selina Alko, a gifted illustrator. They will share their insights on telling important historical stories to young ones with sensitivity and care, despite having completed their work independently. Through music, storytelling, and reflection, we'll discover how to embrace the unexpected and create harmony from life's dissonance. Join us for a family-friendly service filled with creativity, inspiration, and the promise that our story is still being written. Worship Leaders: Dr. Glen Thomas Rideout, Rev. Father's Day gives us a chance to reflect on the wisdom that often comes wrapped in humor from those who fill the roles of mentors, guides, or fathers. As we explore the lighter side of life, we're reminded of the broader roles these figures play. Their playful approach teaches us resilience and reveals the human spirit in everyday moments. It shows us how, sometimes, the deepest wisdom is shared in moments of lift and levity, that joy is the vehicle for the strength we need to make change for good! What rituals and practices help us remember and bring care to the grief and loss we know as individuals and communities? How might we move it through our bodies, and what roles do beauty and singing and laughter have to play? How might we hold multiple stories and experiences within and among ourselves all at once? Join us on Sunday for shared song and story and searching as we explore the origins of Memorial Day and strengthen ourselves for the journey ahead. Fr. Daniel Alloy, FSSP has served as Parochial Vicar at Regina Caeli Parish in Houston, Texas since July of 2022. He was ordained in June of 2020. In Today's Show What is the proper way to be buried? Can a Catholic be buried in water - as in an underwater cemetery? Does the FSSP have a monastery? If a blessed object changes ownership, does it then need to be re-blessed, or does the original blessing remain valid? Why did the Catholic Church introduce pews into churches after the Protestant Reformation? For how long do I need to pray for the repose of my loved one's soul? During prayers of the faithful, I've heard folks pray for the Jewish people to remain faithful to their covenant with God. Is this appropriate? I have three first class relics but I don't know how I should properly display them or make use of them. If the Jewish people broke their covenant with God, would that be better or worse than a Muslim who never held said covenant to begin with? How can we charitably respond to members of other religions who take Our Lord's name in vain? I've learned in the Traditional Latin Mass that as long as Catholics arrive at the Offertory or Mass of the Faithful, they are still able to fulfill the Sunday Obligation/Holy Day of Obligation. Does this also apply at the Novus Ordo and Eastern Rite Liturgies, in which as long as Catholics arrive at the offertories at those Masses their Sunday Obligation/Holy Day of Obligation are fulfilled? A recent poll shows that a mere 31% of Catholics believe in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. How can we reverse the trend? Fr. John Brancich, FSSP is the pastor of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was ordained into the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter in 2004. In Today's Show: What is the meaning of mixing water with the wine during the Offertory at Mass? Is it a supported doctrine to call Mary co-redemptrix? Two St. Stanislaus' Churches in New Hampshire? If I were unkind to someone when they were alive and then when they pass away. I start praying for them. Do they hear my prayers? When Mary gave birth to Jesus, was it a normal birth like any other woman, with pain? Or was it without pain? I keep struggling with gambling, how can God keep forgiving me for this repetitive sin? One of Father's greatest crosses. Why does the Church get to decide what is a sin and what isn't a sin? When does detraction become a mortal sin from a venial sin?
