La « réponse » de l'État d'Israël à l'attaque du Hamas le 7 octobre 2023 s'est très vite révélée être une entreprise de nettoyage ethnique d'ampleur sans précédent dans l'histoire de la Palestine, dont les intentions génocidaires ne sont pas même vraiment cachées par l'appareil d'État israélien. 9 mois et demi après, le bilan de cette opération, toujours en cours est d'au moins 40 000 morts « officiellement » à Gaza, dont une immense majorité de civils, et en réalité au moins trois à quatre fois plus, avec des centaines de milliers de blessés et avec plus d'un million de personnes déplacées. Pour justifier ce crime de masse auprès des opinions, les classes dirigeantes et les grands médias des pays Occidentaux ont recours à une manipulation de l'histoire bien particulière, selon une stratégie qui est d'abord cette de l'État d'Israël lui-même. Il s'agit de présenter l'attaque palestinienne comme un prolongement des persécutions subies depuis des siècles par les juifs d'Europe, du Moyen Âge au paroxysme atteint avec le génocide de 1941-1945. Enzo Traverso, historien de la modernité politique européenne et du judaïsme, vient d'écrire un petit livre au sujet de cette manipulation, « Gaza devant l'histoire » (déjà publié en italien et en espagnol, à paraître en français au mois d'octobre). Avec Julien Théry, il revient sur la façon dont, en présentant l'attaque du 7 octobre comme un « pogrom », on falsifie les faits en les assimilant aux violences perpétrées jadis contre les minorités juives par des majorités chrétiennes. L'objectif est de dénier la réalité, celle d'une situation de résistance (quoiqu'on pense des formes que cette résistance a prises) à une occupation militaire brutale assortie de conditions humanitaires désastreuses imposées à une population entière depuis 2007. Il s'agit aussi de faire oublier que l'État d'Israël a refusé les négociations avec les autorités de Gaza et réprimé violemment, par l'assassinat de manifestants, un mouvement pacifique comme la « Marche du retour » en 2018-2019. Plus largement, l'assimilation absurde de la résistance armée palestinienne aux exactions antisémites des Européens du passé vise à masquer la domination coloniale et la logique libératrice de la violence des colonisés théorisée par Franz Fanon dans « Les damnés de la terre ».

Don Chigazola Don Chigazola has brought wines from Friuli today on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. Friuli is the region of Italy in the north-east, bordering on Slovenia. He has been on the show several times, most recently on this March 2022 episode all about wines from the Alto Adige region. Don begins by retelling the story of how his company Chigazola Merchants works. He travels the back roads of Italy looking for small local producers of unique local wines. He tells about asking the local people who makes the best wine, then he follows the trail to find them. Once he finds the ones he wants to import, he begins the process which takes several months, for the wine to arrive. Don Chigazola really does have the coolest job in the world and it's an inspiring story. Today Don has brought three wines from the Traverso family vineyards in Friuli: Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. The Traverso family was on CWC, the last time was this episode in May of 2019. Friuli Wines These wines come from the Traverso family vineyards in Friuli, which are located in the region called Colli Orientali. That means "Eastern Hills" in Italian. This hilly region is warm during the day and gets cold at night. The soil is gravelly and so the vines have to struggle and send down deep roots. The Friulano is an example of an Italian regional specialty. They also taste a Sauvignon Blanc which has a different character than the ones we are used to, from California or New Zealand. That is due to Friuli's unique growing conditions. There are 20 regions in Italy and each one famous for one, two or sometimes three major varietals that thrive there. There are 600 varietals grown in Italy, and over 100 kinds of white wine. They are all quite different than the same ol' French varietals we are used to drinking in California, as these three wines demonstrate. Arneis is an example of a white wine from Piemonte that is delicious but simply now known in the US. Don Chigazola explains that a lot of his wines are not famous outside of Italy. He enjoys having the role of a wine educator and a represenative of the families that make the wine he chooses to distribute. He takes care to send ancillary materials that come with the shipments which explain about the wines. The third wine they taste is a Pinot Grigio. This is an Italian style, with a little bit of white wine tannin in the aftertaste. This varietal is the largest selling export product and not all of it is as good as this one.

Is it acidic and astringent? Or bright and brilliant? For many Americans, the world of fine wine can feel exclusionary because of the way we talk about wine. That's why some in the wine business are moving away from describing "earthiness" and whether a wine "has seen wood." "This kind of [language] is not just to alienate normal people. This kind of conversation is really very technical, like the way car lovers would talk about the technical elements of a car," said Jonathon Alsop, founder and executive director of the Boston Wine School. "But one of the things that we in the wine business need to change is that communicating is not just talking. Some part of communicating is also the listening part, and letting the other person talk every now and then. And this is something that we're starting to learn in the wine world." Alsop also said there's potential for confusion when someone says a wine "has a lot of grapefruit in it," for example, when there's not actually any grapefruit in the blend. So what should you drink this summer? Alsop recommended vinho verde from Portugal. It's a bargain white wine at about $10 a bottle, and the wine itself is a little bit bubbly and has an interesting flavor because it's a blend of three to five different grapes. And Alsop said it's not a wine you have to spend a lot of time appreciating — just open it and drink. To pair with your wine this summer, Amy Traverso, senior food editor at Yankee Magazine, recommended a few items for the grill: "clambake" grill packets, pull-apart garlic bread, blueberry-gingersnap crumble and s'mores dip. Plus, old-fashioned cottage cheese is making a comeback. "Cottage cheese is the Greek yogurt of cottage cheese," Traverso said. "The flavor is more neutral, it doesn't have the acidity, and it's easier to go in either a savory or a sweet direction with cottage cheese. It's high in protein for people who care about that, it's low in fat for people who care about that. ... If you look on TikTok there are 250 million views for hashtag 'cottage cheese.'" Historien du monde contemporain, en particulier des violences et des totalitarismes du XXe siècle, Enzo Traverso a récemment publié aux éditions La Découverte une somme intitulée « Révolution. Une histoire culturelle ». Dans cet épisode de « La Grande H. », il revient d'abord sur la différence structurelle entre révolte et révolution, en partant de la définition des révolutions comme « furies de l'histoire » proposée par Michelet. Séismes qui renversent l'ordre établi, renouvellent les horizons d'attente et font advenir des idées, des imaginaires et des canons esthétiques nouveaux, les révolutions ne se prêtent ni aux analyses purement déterministes, ni aux récits linéaires. D'où la méthode kaléidoscopique, inspirée de Walter Benjamin, mise en oeuvre par E. Traverso dans son livre. Les puissances de transformation mises en branle par les révolutions, avec toutes les tensions et les contradictions ainsi engagées, sont ici saisies par l'analyse d'une constellations de thèmes, d'images et de symboles. Loin de la grille de lecture conservatrice dominante en France (et dans le monde), qui voit les révolutions, à la suite de François Furet, comme des aberrations néfastes nécessairement vouées au totalitarisme, E. Traverso n'en rejette pas moins les lectures naïves portées à tenir pour des accidents les dérives dont le stalinisme peut faire figure d'emblème. Il constate par ailleurs l'épuisement actuel du paradigme révolutionnaire qui a guidé les mouvements d'émancipation tout au long des XIXe et XXe siècles. Les forces de contestation de l'ordre néolibéral dans les pays du Nord ou, par exemple dans le monde arabe ou en Iran, de résistance à l'oppression des États autoritaires, n'en sont pas moins vives.
