Full Text of ReadingsThird Sunday of Advent Lectionary: 9The Saint of the day is Blessed Mary Frances SchervierBlessed Mary Frances Schervier's Story This woman who once wanted to become a Trappistine nun was instead led by God to establish a community of sisters who care for the sick and aged in the United States and throughout the world. Born into a distinguished family in Aachen—then ruled by Prussia, but formerly Aix-la-Chapelle, France—Frances ran the household after her mother's death, and established a reputation for generosity to the poor. In 1844, she became a Secular Franciscan. The next year she and four companions established a religious community devoted to caring for the poor. In 1851, the Sisters of the Poor of St. Francis were approved by the local bishop; the community soon spread. The first U.S. foundation was made in 1858. Mother Frances visited the United States in 1863 and helped her sisters nurse soldiers wounded in the Civil War. She visited the United States again in 1868. She encouraged Philip Hoever as he was establishing the Brothers of the Poor of St. Francis. When Mother Frances died, there were 2,500 members of her community worldwide. They are still engaged in operating hospitals and homes for the aged. Mother Mary Frances was beatified in 1974. Reflection The sick, the poor, and the aged are constantly in danger of being considered “useless” members of society and therefore ignored—or worse. Nous sommes le 11 février 1919, à Kempen, à l'ouest de Crefeld, en Rhénanie, non loin du Düsseldorf. Le jeune Charles Dandoy, qui a rejoint l'armée belge, quelques mois plus tôt, écrit à ses parents. Il leur témoigne de sa surprise devant la qualité de l'hébergement qu'il reçoit pour sa première nuit en territoire occupé. Il écrit : « Nous avons été conduits à un grand bâtiment qui, paraît-il, est une filature. Nous sommes ici magnifiquement installés. Chauffage au radiateur. Chacun son lit et matelas ; porte-manteau, etc. Lumière électrique. Table et banc et tout cela dans une grande salle bien blanche avec des fenêtres énormes et modernes (…). Ce qu'il fait chic, beau et propre ici, je n'en reviens pas. » Si le jeune Charles est étonné et satisfait de la modernité des infrastructures allemandes, d'autres soldats expriment leur désappointement devant la précarité des logements. Ainsi, Léon Dewaele, soldat du 3e régiment de ligne, cantonné dans une petite bourgade plus au sud : « Nous sommes dans un hameau et dormons dans un sac de paille allemand. » Au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, la Belgique endosse, à son tour, le rôle d'occupant. En décembre 1918, ses troupes franchissent la frontière allemande et s'installent sur la rive gauche du Rhin, de Clèves à Aix-la-Chapelle. Elles y resteront plus de dix ans. Dr. Daniel Chapelle, a psychologist with over three decades of experience, is the author of seven books that combine psychology, philosophy, history, and religion, including Meditative Self-Care; The Necessity of Unhappiness-A Paradox; Karma for Westerners; Nietzsche and the Buddha: Different Lives, Same Ideas (How Nietzsche May Yet Become the West's Own Buddha); Nietzsche and Psychoanalysis; and The Soul In Everyday Life. These writings are not separate items with no connection between them. Together, they are a sustained attempt to respond to Nietzsche's central challenge, his famous thought of the eternal return of all things. With it, Nietzsche asked his readers a personal question that would lay bare their innermost feelings and thoughts about their existence. He asked: How would you feel and what would you think if you had to live your life over and over, again and again, endlessly and without anything new or different in it? After descending on London last week, the art world arrived in Paris this week, with the main attraction being the Art Basel Paris art fair—now staged in the renovated Belle Epoque masterpiece, the Grand Palais. An editor-at-large at The Art Newspaper, Jane Morris, was at the VIP opening and tells us more. As always, alongside the fair are a number of eye-catching museum shows and projects. Among them is Chapelle, a new in-situ work for the Musée Picasso by the Argentinian artist Guillermo Kuitca. Ben Luke talks to Kuitca about the piece. And this episode's Work of the Week is June (2022) by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, a work from a series in which the Polish-born Romani artist reimagines astrologically themed frescoes at the Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara in order to explore the history and contemporary life of the Roma people. Le "fil de la mort" (ou "Drahtverhau" en allemand) était une barrière électrifiée utilisée par les Allemands pendant la Première Guerre mondiale pour sécuriser leur frontière avec la Belgique occupée, notamment le long de la frontière belgo-néerlandaise. Installé en 1915, ce dispositif meurtrier s'étendait sur environ 300 kilomètres, de la mer du Nord à Aix-la-Chapelle, et avait pour but principal d'empêcher les Belges de fuir l'occupation allemande en se réfugiant aux Pays-Bas neutres. Le fil de la mort était constitué de plusieurs rangées de fils de fer barbelés, auxquels étaient raccordés des câbles électriques puissants. Alimenté par des générateurs, il portait une tension allant jusqu'à 2000 volts, suffisante pour tuer instantanément toute personne qui entrerait en contact avec lui. La barrière n'était pas seulement une ligne physique ; elle représentait un instrument de terreur psychologique. Les civils belges, désespérés de fuir la répression, la conscription forcée et les conditions de vie difficiles sous l'occupation, étaient souvent prêts à tout pour franchir ce mur mortel. Des centaines de personnes, dont des hommes, des femmes et des enfants, ont perdu la vie en essayant de traverser le fil de la mort. Certains tentaient de le contourner, de le creuser ou de l'isoler avec des objets improvisés, mais rares étaient ceux qui réussissaient. Des passeurs risquaient également leur vie pour guider clandestinement des réfugiés à travers des points moins surveillés, mais même avec leur aide, le passage restait extrêmement périlleux. Le fil de la mort est devenu un symbole tragique de la brutalité et de l'inhumanité de la guerre, une barrière qui ne faisait pas de distinction entre soldats et civils. En plus de son rôle de contrôle des mouvements de population, il marquait une frontière infranchissable qui séparait les familles et isolait la Belgique du reste de l'Europe. Après la guerre, le fil fut démantelé, mais il laissa des souvenirs amers et des récits poignants des vies brisées par cette "frontière de la mort", rappelant l'absurdité de la guerre et ses conséquences sur les populations civiles. Un choix qui ne doit rien au hasard. En effet, c'est dans cette ville que se trouve le terminal du réseau télégraphique en provenance d'Allemagne.Reuter sera donc bien placé pour recevoir un flot d'informations, qu'il pourra ensuite diffuser en Belgique et en France.Des pigeons voyageurs à la rescousseIl se trouve cependant confronté à un sérieux problème. Il n'existe pas de télégraphe entre Aix-la-Chapelle et Bruxelles. Dès lors, comment acheminer les nouvelles vers la capitale belge et, de là, en direction de Berlin et Paris ?Reuter trouve alors une solution ingénieuse : il utilise des pigeons voyageurs. À vrai dire, le recours à ces oiseaux n'était pas nouveau, puisque Charles Havas y avait déjà pensé.Reuter réunit donc 200 pigeons qui, se déplaçant plus vite que les trains postaux, lui transmettent les nouvelles plus rapidement. Il prend donc connaissance de ces informations avant ses collègues, ce qui assure un avantage décisif à son agence.Mais la chance l'abandonne dès 1851, date à laquelle le télégraphe est posé sur cette ligne. Matt Crawford speaks with Psychologist and author Daniel Chappelle about his book A Minimalist Ethic for Everyday Life. The Golden Rule of the Abrahamic religions says: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” In contrast, the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius says: “Don't do to others what you don't want for yourself.” Or as Chapelle puts it, "Don't be a schmuck." Philosophy and Psychology are often thought of as separate disciplines and Chapelle shows us how intertwined they are in an accessible, easy to understand and fun way. A thought provoking read that is sure to spur some interesting conversations.
