Greg Jenner is joined in Victorian England by Dr Isabella Rosner and comedian Cariad Lloyd to learn all about the ethos, practitioners and creations of the Arts and Crafts movement. Most people have heard of William Morris, one of the leaders of the Arts and Crafts movement that came to prominence in England in the last decades of the 19th Century. His abstract, nature-inspired designs still adorn everything from wallpaper and curtains to notebooks and even dog beds. And the company he founded, Morris & Co., is still going strong. But the history of this artistic movement, and the other creatives who were involved, is less well known.Arts and Crafts, which advocated a return to traditional handicrafts like needlework, carpentry and ceramics, was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and included a strong socialist vision: its practitioners wanted everyone to have access to art, and to be able to enjoy homes that were comfortable, functional and beautiful. This episode explores Morris and other creatives both in and outside his circle, including Edward Burne-Jones, May Morris, Gertrude Jekyll and Philip Webb. It looks at the ethos that inspired them, the homes and artworks they created, and asks how radical their political beliefs really were.If you're a fan of groundbreaking artistic developments, gorgeous interior design, the intersection between art and politics, and Victorian interpersonal drama, you'll love our episode on the Arts and Crafts movement. If you want more from Cariad Lloyd, check out our episodes on Georgian Courtship and Mary Wollstonecraft. Ciao.

Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 11 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. This week we start Catalyst with an interview by Keri Wendt who speaks with Taylor Ross, co-founder of Bati Goods. Bati Goods, which was established in 2017, specializes in leather goods. Ross shares the fascinating story behind building a company in the heart of Paraguay, including the impetus behind the creation of Bati Goods, which sells hand-made leather-wrapped goods sourced directly from Paraguay. A portion of the profits from Bati Goods goes back to the students at The Macchi School in Tobati, a school that offers a top-notch college preparatory education, as a way to give back to the local community. Wendt and Ross discuss the culture differences between Paraguay and LA, and some of what goes into running an artisan business in a foreign country, giving the listener valuable insights and unique perspectives on this his small-business start-up and how it stands out from the rest. The second interview this week is conducted Ella Flanders, who sat down to talk with senior Fiber Arts major/experimental fashion design minor at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Maia Malakoff. They discuss how Malakoff explores the use of unconventional materials pushing the boundaries of conventional clothing collections, and touch on the difficulties of collaboration in an environment that praises individual creativity. Despite these challenges, Maia expresses how rewarding the experience of skill-sharing with her peers is and acquiring new techniques through collaborative efforts. The pair also cover how Malakoff draws inspiration from her background in dance which allows her to draw connection between movement and garments, seeking to convey how clothing can seamlessly interact with the human body. They conclude the interview by pondering Maia's plans for the future and her career aspirations in the fashion industry.

Jana Manuelpillai revisits the Madras College of Arts and Crafts, the first British colonial art school set up in India, through the post-independence practice and striking monochrome works of A.P. Santhanaraj. The Madras College of Arts and Crafts in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, was the first art school in India, set up by the British colonial administrator in 1850. Post-independence in 1948, as the Government College of Arts and Crafts, teachers like K.C.S. Paniker and S. Dhanapal, and A.P. - Andrew Peter - Santhanaraj, transformed from the School, from its ‘Kensington style' education, to focus on Indian influences. Historical attention has focussed on schools in Bombay, Baroda, Calcutta, and Delhi, but curator Jana Manuelpillai suggests that this actually let a more ‘authentic' southern idiom to flourish - something he continues to explore with contemporary artists. Marking 55 years since Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu, Jana shares footage from his meetings with the Santhanaraj, and outlines his plural influences, from Indian fresco painting to the art of Jackson Pollock. We discuss the diversity and deep practice of traditional religions in the south, and the differences between European primitivism and nativism, ‘othering' the likes of Pablo Picasso. Plus, we discuss the globalisation of contemporary art markets, challenging London, New York, and Paris' primacy, and the ‘stamps of approval' they've granted diaspora artists past. A.P. Santhanaraj (1932-2009): Modern & Contemporary Art from South India ran at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS in London until 23 September 2023.
