Je me trompe ? I'm only happy when it rains.
Who's the leading HR hitter this spring? Aaron Judge? Good guess. But no. You'll want to hear the story of Vinny Capra. Also, get this: In a World Baseball Classic qualifier, Manny Ramirez's son batted vs. Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf's son. Really. Tennis in the 1990s was dominated by several young and talented players who helped usher in a new era on both the men's and women's tours. In this episode of History of the 90s we look back at the flashy, style of Andre Agassi and his highly talented rival Pete Sampras who faced off in one of the greatest tennis rivalries ever. One of our more international podcasts as tennis coach Calvin Betton joins us from the Rogers Cup in Montreal, James Gray from the Olympics in Paris and George Bellshaw... still at home in London. They discussed... Novak Djokovic exacted revenge on Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday and ‘completes tennis' with Olympic gold. He is just the fifth player to complete the career golden slam, joining Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams and first man to win gold without dropping a set, although it was pretty close in the final. Zheng Qinwen became the surprise women's champion, beating in-form Donna Vekic. Zheng had an eventful tournament: she retired Angelique Kerber, ended Iga Swiatek's Roland Garros winning streak and had a fall-out with Emma Navarro after which it became clear that basically no-one seems to like her. Iga Swiatek barely spoke after semi-final defeat to Zheng, says she cried for about six hours after defeat but did come back to win bronze. Andy Murray's career is finally over, beaten by Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul in the Olmypic men's doubles.

Argentina's Gabriela Sabatini was a rising star as a junior, and she lived up to her early expectations. After becoming the youngest player to ever win the Orange Bowl (at age 13), she reached the semifinals of the French Open and the top 10 of the WTA rankings two years later. It wasn't all smooth sailing, though - her well-documented struggles with shyness made duties off the court difficult. Gaby credits working with a sport psychologist and the global exposure tennis gave her as helping her become more outgoing, and take her game to the next level. After reaching five major semifinals and the final of the US Open, she broke through with the 1990 US Open title over No. 1 Steffi Graf. She credits her depth of experience on the major stage, and adjustments she made with her coaches, for her victory. Gaby details her passions outside of tennis, including charity work, and shares her advice to aspiring players to pursue balance beyond the court. Gabriela Sabatini is a two-time major champion, former world No. 3 in singles and doubles, and Olympic sliver medalist. In 2019, she was awarded the International Tennis Federation's highest accolade, the Philippe Chatrier Award, for her achievements on court and in giving back through charitable causes. She became the second Argentinian inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Welcome to our podcast where we discuss and deliberate over memoirs and biographies found in thrift shops. This is a great way to do things as we are not choosing who to read about. It was Andre Agassi who in the early days of his relationship with Steffi Graf said, "You can always learn from a champion," but what can you learn? We've tended to end our podcast interviews with a question about what advice the legend would give both to tennis playing youngsters and to tennis parents. And there were a few themes that ran through the answers. Hear from the Hall of Famers and legends from Season 1 on what you can take from them onto the court, into your career, and beyond.1:42 - Lleyton Hewitt2:24 - David Hall4:15 - Pam Shriver5:41 - Stan Smith6:54 - Ivan Lendl8:17 - Mary Pierce11:57 - John Newcombe15:24 - Vijay AmritrajSeason 2 of the TennisWorthy Podcast begins on January 11, 2024. First came the Australian giants Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson, Margaret Court and Rod Laver, then the electricity of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, the athleticism and power of Pete Sampras, Steffi Graf and their countless rivals before the entrance of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams who together took title-winning standards to a whole new level. This year Djokovic has achieved a feat many considered out of reach in equalling Margaret Court's record 24 singles major titles, but do titles alone define Greatness, or are there other factors at play when we go in search of the Goat – the Greatest of All Time? How should the Greatest be judged? Success? Substance? Style? Celebrity? Presenter Seb Lauzier is joined for a two-part special by esteemed tennis journalist and author of biographies on both Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Chris Bowers and WTA player turned tennis commentator and reporter, Jill Craybas tpo discuss and debate those very questions.Presenter Seb LauzierGuests - Chris Bowers and Jill CraybasAudio inserts - Ivan Ljubicic, Jeremy Chardy, Brad Stine, Paul Haarhuis and Craig O'ShannessyChris Bowers 'Greatest of All Time' presentation - https://chrisbowers.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Greatest-paper-03NOV2023.pdf

In 1978 at the age of 16 years old, Baltimore, MD native Pam Shriver got to the final of The US Open as an amateur, defeating world #1 Martina Navratilova in the semis. She was on tour for 20 years, won 21 tournaments and got to 3 in the world, competing week in and week out against Chris Evert, Martina, Tracy Austin, and Steffi Graf to name a few. In doubles she won 108 straight matches with Martina and In 1983 she and Martina won all 4 majors, the only team in history to complete The Grand Slam. After her Hall of Fame career she embarked on what has been a prolific broadcasting career and can be heard throughout the year on both ESPN's tennis coverage as well as Tennis Channel's coverage. In April 2022 she shared a deeply personal story of having been in a romantic relationship with her coach, that was 33 years her senior and has since advocated for improved policing of these scenarios when they pop up on tour. We discussed this, and many different hot button topics including the impending Saudi involvement in tennis, the health of The WTA Tour, and her ideas on how to make the sport more appealing to broadcasters. Wimbledon semifinalist & former WTA world #18 Alexandra Stevenson joins the show this week to help breakdown one of the most bizarre events in grand slam history. Alexandra gives us the inside scoop on everything from - what was really going on off-court during the most important two weeks of her tennis career - how she handled the aftermath, and what really happens during some of those infamous rain delays. We also reminisce and hear fun stories from throughout her career about Steffi Graf, Jennifer Capriati and the G.O.A.T, Serena Williams. It's a fantastic 90 minutes of Wimbledon talk, Alexandra and of course, some great insider stories. Far more than a superb memoir about the highest levels of professional tennis, Open is the engrossing story of a remarkable life.Zibby: "I am beyond excited to be talking to Andre Agassi today. Andre Agassi really needs no introduction. As a refresher, Andre used to be ranked number one in the world in tennis and won eight Grand Slam singles championships. Now married to Steffi Graf, Andre has two children and is involved in launching charter schools with the Turner-Agassi Foundation. Andre Agassi wrote one of my favorite books of all time. It's called Open, which I'll talk about tonight."“Agassi may have just penned one of the best sports autobiographies of all time. Check—it's one of the better memoirs out there, period. An unvarnished, at times inspiring story [told] in an arresting, muscular style. Agassi's memoir is just as entrancing as his tennis game.”—TimePurchase on Zibby's Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3N111GZPurchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/439k2MYSubscribe to Zibby's weekly newsletter here.Purchase Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books merch here. Episode 300 of The Body Serve is our meditation on the career of Serena Williams - an episode we'd put off, partly out of denial and partly because we wanted so badly to do it justice. In 1999, just before beating Steffi Graf at Indian Wells, Serena said: “I'm tired of losing to people I should beat. Whatever my potential is, I want to reach it. Now.” She did just that for over two decades, amassing 23 major singles titles, 14 major doubles titles with Venus, international fame and cultural influence, and hundreds of Open Era tennis records. The hardest thing about covering Serena is to take her out of the realm of metaphor: she is (rightfully) an icon, someone who means even more than what she did on court, but how do you take a measure of the woman herself? What follows is not a full biography. We look at distinct eras in Serena's career and weave in themes of misogynoir, body shaming, integrity, sisterhood, shade, and finally, a celebration of Serena's legendary kits and press conference moments. 3:00 Let's look at the receipts: the resume and the records 7:25 The early years: a “perfect bond of union” and Serena's first WTA match 20:45 You can't tell the story of Serena without Venus 27:20 Domination Part One (2002-2003): Serena Slam and prophecy fulfilled 32:00 The desert (2004-2006): acceptance is conditional; the Great White Hope 40:40 The Chris Evert letter 50:50 Getting back to #1 (2007-2010) 57:00 The myths of 2012 lead to one of the greatest stretches in tennis history (2012-2017) 1:02:25 Returning to Indian Wells, 2015 1:10:45 Twilight (2018- ) 1:14:50 Misogynoir 1:23:10 Controversy: why is it always the US Open? 1:36:10 Serena in press: there is truly nothing like it 1:45:25 Serena dropped a massive bombshell while we were recording, and it gave us closure 1:49:10 Legacy 1:58:20 The legendary fits: Cameroon, catsuits, and Puma supremacy
