Was erlaubt sich Monica Seles?

Inspired by the recent U.S. Open tennis tournament, here's my take on the grand slam singles finals won by Coco Gauff and Novak Djokovic, the G.O.A.T. debate and the sport and its culture in general. From here, we look at two things that are inextricably linked to top-level tennis and sport- media and fame. There's also discussion of a very important argument put forward in the seminal 1974 tennis/sports psychology book, ‘The Inner Game of Tennis'. As well as lauding the impressive achievements of these elite athletes, this episode also looks at the dark side of fame and touches on the cautionary tennis tales of Monica Seles, Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu. I wish them all a happy life, whether they're winning titles or not! I hope you enjoy the show! If so, please subscribe, like, share etc... The actions of Gunter Parche changed the sport of tennis for ever on April 30, 1993. Monica Seles was on track to smash the record books until Parche, a Steffi Graf superfan, stabbed Seles during a changeover at the Hamburg tournament. Graf and Seles were lodged in a rivalry that was on track to redefine the sport. Seles remarkably came all the way back, meeting her great rival once again in the 1995 US Open Final. 4-30-2023 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by explaining why Jacob deGrom continues to have arm ailments and will likely be injury prone for the remainder of his Major League Baseball career. John believes that Jacob throws too hard every single pitch for his forearm, shoulder, and elbow to be able to handle. John cites other pitchers who have learned to get hitters out by not throwing so hard- but that has been out of necessity. He then cites Justin Verlander, who keeps the velocity of his fastball down with some left in reserve. It is hard to point out a fair enough comp to what Jake is going through, but the bottom line is he should curtail the max effort on his fastball if he ever wants to make it through another full MLB season without a trip to the injured list. Next John talks about MLB doubleheaders and why he believes it is time to get rid of the split ones and why. He even explains why it is better for the players. John then expresses his shock over fourteen (14) NFL teams deciding to draft a quarterback. John cannot believe the decisions made to waste a pick because of position scarcity. Outside of Bryce Young and CJ Stroud, John believes most of the other selections were a waste of time, perhaps for the exception of Anthony Richardson and maybe Will Levis. During today's “Saving Sports History” segment of the show, John talks about Charlie Robertson, Lou Gehrig, Willie Mays, Monica Seles, Charley Jones, and Isiah Thomas.

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2019] Legendary tennis coach and icon Nick Bollettieri sadly passed away in December 2022, but his impact on his students, coaches, and the entire tennis community will live on forever. For this episode, I have resurrected my 2019 interview with Nick about how to achieve your dreams and help those around you reach their true potential. Nick had over 60 years of unrivaled experienced coaching the world's best tennis players. He founded the Bollettieri Tennis Academy, where he worked with such players as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, Jim Courier, Serena and Venus Williams, Mary Pierce, Maria Sharapova, Martina Hingis, Anna Kournikova, Marcelo Rios, Kei Nishikori, and Boris Becker, just to name a few. Nick also co-founded the nonprofit fitness camp, Camp Kaizen with his wife Cindi. He wrote for tennis magazine as an instruction editor and was featured in tv series and documentary films. Nick was also a very accomplished author, having written numerous books, including Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook, My Aces My Faults, and a recent Biography entitled Bollettieiri - Changing the Game. On top of all this, Nick was inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame and told me that he has been inducted into 12 others as well. On the show we cover the mindset you must have to achieve your goals, why every top performer has a great team behind that person, why you must get to know your students if you want to help them reach their true potential, Nick's exercise routine at 88 years old, and much more! Last week during Fantasy Suite dates, we saw Jason and Gabby get to play some tennis, in what felt like a very normal type of date for them. Also, it's very important to note that Jason was a pretty bad ass tennis player in his own right, and was a NCAA All American in college! Danielle again came in clutch for Megan and found a tennis related story on TikTok, thanks girl! Monica Seles was also a badass on the tennis courts. She starts training at 5 years old, and plays in her first pro tournament at 14. Her first year on the professional women's tour she ends up ranked six IN THE WORLD. Her career is on the rise! She and Steffi Graff are back and forth with titles and wins, that is, until the Citizen Cup of 1993, where things would take a drastic turn for Monica. Dr. Jim also explains what he learned at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, working with players such as Andre Agassi, Monica Seles, and Jim Courier, and how that led to him starting the Human Performance Institute. “Health ignites performance.” - Dr. Jim Loehr “Your treatment of others is going to be the ultimate scorecard for how you measure your life.” - Dr. Jim Loehr “How you treat others is the most important dimension for sustained success.” - Dr. Jim Loehr This Week on The Wow Factor: The impact of Dr. Loehr's father's passions and enthusiasms on his path in life Loehr's early career as a community mental health specialist and the man who inspired him to pivot and apply psychology to human performance in sport How Dr. Loehr used important moral and ethical assets as a launchpad for helping people become incredible competitors in a brutal arena What drove Dr. Loehr to study character, and why he decided to share over 30 years' worth of data in his book Leading with Character: 10 Minutes a Day to a Brilliant Legacy Set How data fits into understanding sustained high performance The two types of character and how they impact an athlete's success Why humility and empathy are so necessary for performers, and how those qualities sustain them at the top How the gift of generosity helps you connect with other human beings in a meaningful way Why culture powerfully determines how we evolve as human beings Why your private voice is the most important coach you will ever have in your life Why Dr. Loehr is so passionate about working with veterans Dr. Jim Loehr's Word of Wisdom: The most precious part of who you are is often the most neglected, but it's in this extraordinary place where you make the decisions that will determine your destiny and the destiny of so many people. My Guest today I and met during my first season in Turks in summer of 1994, but his first season was in Club Med Cancun in July of 1988 as Aide Gestion. Everyone, please help me welcome, Steve Cohn! Before Club Med, Steve attended Georgetown University and obtained a degree in International Finance. After his graduation, Steve went backpacking in Europe and met a few G.O.s on vacation that told him about Club Med. He applied to Club Med (by first calling 1-800 Club Med!) when he got home from his trip and asked to be an Excursions G.O. in his interview. His first season in Cancun was cut short due to Hurricane Gilbert, but he went on to work in many amazing villages from 1988 to 2006. In fact, we only covered a small fraction of the villages he worked in during this interview. We talked about his time in Sandpiper, Arziv, Wengen, Bali, and Itaparica, to name but a few. Steve also met his fair share of famous people as well: 90's model Ashley Richardson, French Open champion Yannick Noah, former world No. 1 tennis player Monica Seles and eleven-time F1 Grand Prix winner, Rubens Barrichello. As you can imagine, Steve has a lot of stories to tell, but my favorite would have to be when he exchanged English lessons for Lambada lessons with his future wife in Itaparica (before you flip out, it was her idea!). Steve is also the longest-serving American G.O. in his position (Gestionnaire) in the history of Club Med. I hope you all enjoy this trip down memory lane like we did. **My First Season podcast has always been free to listen to and is available on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Samsung Podcasts, Podbean App, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, TuneIn + Alexa, iHeartRadio, PlayerFM, Pandora, Podchaser and Listen Notes.
