Simon Scriver's Amazingly Ultimate Fundraising Superstar Podcast
Welcome to the Fundraising Everywhere Podcast, today, we've got something a little bit different for you. To celebrate our upcoming recruitment and careers conference coming up on Thursday 20th November, we've decided to hand the mic over to our guest host Rory White in this special series of episodes called 'It Started On The Street'. Rory will be chatting to some brilliant leaders in the charity sector and beyond about their journeys since they started their careers as dialogue fundraisers. "Charlotte Forest began her fundraising career with Push, a well-known agency at the very start of face-to-face fundraising in the UK. After that, she moved to Gift, where she built a long and varied career — starting out as a fundraiser, then stepping up to team leader, and eventually managing multiple regions across the country. This gave her an incredible breadth of experience before she transitioned into the charity sector when Gift closed. Today, she's Director of Income Generation at a hospice in Swindon. In our conversation, Charlotte shares how the resilience and skills she developed on the street shaped her career, and how those lessons continue to influence her work today. It's a really insightful and enjoyable discussion — I think you'll get a lot from it." You can learn more about our upcoming Fundraising Recruitment and Careers Conference happening on Thursday 20th November here If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to hit follow and enable notifications so you'll get notified to be first to hear of future podcast episodes. Charlie Austin is back with us this time in person, after his stint down under, where he faced off against legends like Nani and dealt with the perils of Aussie wildlife, from swooping magpies to snakes in the garden. Starting out while working as a builder playing for Poole town he got a move to Swindon where he quickly formed a great partnership with Billy Paynter and isn't upset at all that Billy is known as the king. Meanwhile off the pitch there were naked streaks at Cheltenham & burglary pranks. Quickly climbing up the leagues Austin went from builder to Premier League in the space of 6 years, while along the way he worked under the likes of Harry Redknapp, Sean Dyche & Eddie Howe. At Southampton Austin had great moments playing in Europe including an infamous standoff with Dusan Tadic but most importantly he provided one of the greatest interviews the Premier League has ever seen.

In today's episode, Lauren talks to Paula Harsley about being a wordsmith. Paula specialises in helping businesses to bring their internal and external business communications to life.Paula worked in banking for many years and then for the Swindon and Wiltshire Growth Hub as one of their business navigators. Following the Covid pandemic and having met many business owners before and then during at online meetings, she decided to set up her business helping new businesses, small and medium enterprises with their marketing. When working with clients, she enjoys getting to know them, so that she can write from their point of view, putting herself in their shoes. She writes for the customer, translating technical or industry language into something that they will understand. Acronyms have their place, but only when the people you are talking to understand them. She particularly loves doing a website rewrite and longer form writing, but does also help clients with their social media – particularly tone of voice.Paula also shares how important networking has been to her over the years, not only for making new contacts, but also having the chance to talk to like-minded people. She has tried both formal and informal groups, and thinks they all have their place. She also talks about the perceptions we have of sales, and how when she worked in a bank it was easy, because they had lots of products that people might want. She prefers sales to be about relationships, not hard selling.Paula also talks about the common mistakes people make in their writing and how she helps. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to SLART (@SLART.ME) SLART — a figurative expressionist and proud outsider artist based in Swindon, UK. He dropped out of his A-level art class after his teacher told him he couldn't draw large scale. It wasn't until his late 30s that he picked up pen and ink again, prompted by a blog post that posed three questions about childhood pastimes. His answers were all “drawing and video games”—he chose drawing. Many life experiences fuel his art, including his adoption, chronic illness, two kidney transplants, the deaths of family members, everyday life, and a fascination with people and their stories — as an observer of others, shaped by chronic shyness and a deep feeling of being an outsider. Now he mainly paints large canvases using oils and acrylics, exploring themes of identity, memory, nostalgia and mortality, but often injects a humorous, self-deprecating element to his work. He writes about his art practice every Saturday on Substack (Substack www.creamofthecropbyslart.com) Upcoming solo show 6-18th September www.memementovivere.art Exhibition Details:MEMENTO VIVERE (Remember to Live) - Art Exhibition by SLARTThe Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Church, Euston Road, London, NW1 2BA7th September – 18th September 2025Free Entry Opening Night Reception: Saturday, 6th September 2025, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Invite only) In partnership with Beata Maria Rzepecka from Gabriel Fine Arts, invites the public to "MEMENTO VIVERE" (Remember to Live) "MEMENTO VIVERE" serves as a poignant reminder to embrace the beauty and fragility of existence. The works reflect a deeply personal journey of introspection while touching upon the universal human condition."People shy away from death," says SLART, whose work often combines memento mori and spiritual themes with pop culture influences. “This exhibition comes from facing my own health struggles and thinking a lot about life and death. But it's not all heavy — it's actually about hope and reflection. It's a reminder to wake up, notice the little things, and really live — with no regrets. Even when life feels messy, there's still beauty and meaning to be found."The exhibition aims to challenge viewers to reflect on their own lives, mortality, and choices, creating an appreciation for the fleeting nature of time. Using raw expression, SLART's art navigates complex emotions, testifying to human resilience and the drive to live fully during our finite lives. In this episode of Meet the Farmers, Ben Eagle catches up with James and Katie Allen, a dynamic couple whose journey into farming began with conservation grazing and has evolved into something much bigger. Originally featured during the Meet the Farmers on Tour series in 2019, James and Katie return to the podcast with exciting updates from their new 170-acre holding near Swindon.James and Katie have built a thriving, nature-led enterprise focused on native breed cattle and sheep.Recently, their business took a major leap forward with the opening of a new on-farm tannery and classroom, funded by a £254,000 grant. These new facilities are already playing a vital role in their mission to connect farming, sustainability, and education — particularly in the realm of fashion. The Allens now host fashion students and others on the farm, sharing insights into the journey from hide and wool to finished product and their links with farming. We discuss their vision for the future, what the grant has enabled, sustainable leather production, and how they're bridging the gap between agriculture and fashion. Interview with David Greelish, Apple Lisa Documentary Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/FloppyDays Sponsors: 8-Bit Classics Arcade Shopper FutureVision Research Hello, and welcome to episode 150 of the Floppy Days Podcast for April, 2025. My name is Randy Kindig and I'm the host for this journey through the annals of home computer history. This month, I'm going to step aside from the ongoing series of episodes about the HP 97/67 programmable calculators to bring you a timely interview with a good friend about an interesting topic. That friend is David Greelish, a computer historian, and the topic is his recent publication of a film documentary about the Apple Lisa, called "Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa". David tells us all about the film, why he produced it, why the Apple Lisa was an important part of home computer history, who he interviewed for the film (he had some amazing guests) and much more. It's a great film and should interest a lot of the listeners, so please consider going out and purchasing the film in order to support David's efforts. For upcoming shows, we do have one more episode in the series on the HP97 with HP calculator historian Wlodek Mier-Jedrzejowicz. I will air that episode very soon. In this special deep-dive episode, we explore the extraordinary story of Gilbert O'Sullivan, the iconic Irish singer-songwriter who defined an era of melodic, thoughtful 1970s pop. From humble beginnings in Waterford, Ireland, and later Swindon, England, young Raymond O'Sullivan dreamed of creating music that was both emotionally honest and musically timeless. What he achieved went beyond even his wildest dreams. We trace Gilbert's transformation from a quiet, artistic boy into the global pop sensation known for timeless hits like “Alone Again (Naturally),” “Clair,” “Get Down,” and “Nothing Rhymed.” Along the way, he invented a persona all his own—complete with a schoolboy haircut, flat cap, and short pants—that helped him stand out in an industry dominated by glam rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic bands. His look was quirky, but his sound was grounded in elegant piano pop and biting lyricism. He wasn't chasing fads—he was creating his own lane. We'll look at how Gilbert's early influences—from Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino to the British Invasion bands like The Beatles and The Kinks—shaped his unique sound. You'll hear the story behind his breakout moment, how he almost gave up before finding success, and why “Alone Again (Naturally)” became one of the most impactful and controversial pop ballads of the '70s.We also dig into the often-overlooked second chapter of his career: the legal battles, the fight for artistic control, and his ongoing legacy as a fiercely independent songwriter who continues to tour and release new music decades after his biggest hits.Whether you're a lifelong fan, a 70s music aficionado, or just discovering Gilbert O'Sullivan for the first time, this episode is a heartfelt and eye-opening journey through one of pop music's most compelling careers.
Town get battered by Swindon but the play offs are still on. Can they best the league leaders on Easter Monday? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In Danny's absence Lee is joined by Jack Downes AKA DonsVlogs. They start by talking about the 1-1 draw away to league leaders Walsall. They discuss how the game played out, who was at fault for the free kick and why did the wall jump out of the way? they discuss the 2-1 defeat to Swindon, how can Wimbledon throw away so many points away in the last 10 mins and from winning positions. Did Jackson get the starting line up all wrong? does Jackson need to take the blame regarding the lack of subs or was he correct to blame the ref? After the break they talk about Matty Stevens and is 21 goals enough? some complaints from the Wimbledon faithful regarding Stevens all round game or is scoring goals all that matters? Should we be building the team around him? or are the fans correct and he needs to do more? Lee then asks the important question, after 3 years in charge if we were to stay in League 2 would that signal the end for Johnny Jackson? They finish by previewing another massive game at home against Harrogate. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Danny returns and is joined by ever present Lee Finch and they are joined by guest Joe Healy. Joe explains how a South London born and bred Englishman ends up living in Wales speaking fluent Welsh. He also explains his Wimbledon FC/AFC Wimbledon history. They talk about the Barrow game and how it felt like a defeat from being 2-0 to drawing 2-2, the frustrations they have with Jacksons tactics, subs and words after but also they discuss the positives. They also speak about the form of our captain, it has dipped but why? is it due to tiredness, is it his age creeping up on him or traveling from Swindon having an impact. They discuss the season renewals that have gone out, no DD option for early bird and prices going up. Is this just the price of being fan owned? or are the club squeezing the most loyal fans to much? are customers paying on the door more important now as they could bring in more money? It does seem we are at a crossroads. They finish the episode previewing the massive games coming up against Walsall and Swindon, they also give some Fletcher Fabrications predictions. Nights In White Satin - 260 million streams on Spotify - is still the central plank in the set Justin Hayward's touring in October. He talks to us here about the first shows he ever saw and played, the ballroom circuit of the mid-'60s remembered in particularly vivid detail and involving the odd burst of song - “My kind of town, Great Yarmouth is …!”. Along with … … the appeal of “a Moody Blues crowd”. ... “Name Singer seeks guitar player”: the Melody Maker ad that got him into the Marty Wilde band, aged 17. … playing a summer season on the same bill as a water feature – aka the Waltzing Waters. … his early band All Things Bright and their Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Coasters setlist. … the “onerous” publishing deal he signed with Lonnie Donegan that siphoned off the profits of Nights In White Satin. … seeing Tommy Cooper at the Bournemouth Pavilion and the Barron Knights at the Locarno in Swindon. … “Terry the Pill” in Eric Burden's office. … toying with the idea of “a rock version of Dvorak”. … the uncertain fate of Nights In White Satin and the plugger who threatened to resign over it. … how Days Of Future Passed was the “Deramic Sound” demo record. … and the highpoint of the Moody Blues story and their Second Coming.
