267. Build Your Business Without Burnout And Make More Money with Marissa Roberts

The Game On Girlfriend Podcast

When we're busy and tired, we give up the things that bring us joy because we don't see them as important. I'll read that book when I've got time. I'll do that puzzle when I've got time. I'll go for that massage when everything else is done. It's not going to be done. This is an episode you're going to want to come back to when you feel burnout creeping in. Host of the Simpler Business Podcast, Marissa Roberts is going to turn all the stress and anxiety on its head for you.  What I want you to listen for is how much our feelings and emotions as the business owner leak out into the business. If we're feeling anxious and nervous, it's going to impact our revenue. So listen for what Marissa says is possible as you relax and bring more money in.  Marissa's first business was Beautifully Organised. She went into homes and helped make the lives mothers with young children easier. She was burnt out in two months. “My house is messy because I'm spending eight hours a day tidying other people's homes,” says Marissa. “And then I come home and I'm like, I can't do anything, and I'm too tired to play with my kids … I've dug this hole too deep and now I have to deliver on it and I don't have enough hours in the day to do it.” From there, Marissa pivoted to online courses. She went down a rabbit hole of passive income and scalability.  “I wanted to make life easier for me, and now I get to make life easier for other people.” Business owners might have a hard time asking themselves, “What feels hard for me, and how can I delegate?” For Marissa, this meant hiring a virtual assistant who helps her with self-promotion.  We're so driven by productivity, achievements, goals and actions. Marissa says taking the time to pause and really do the internal work of why something feels difficult is key to knowing when it's time to delegate.  Sometimes a small tweak can make a big difference. For example, if you feel overwhelmed with email, telling your clients you'll only be responding to emails between certain times each day might be the boundary you need. “Clients don't mind if you set a boundary because it lets them know exactly what to expect, and they're not guessing while they're working with you,” says Marissa. Burnout can manifest differently for different people, and at various points in your life. We have an innate ability to handle things as they are raised, but what you can handle in your 20s, might look different in your 40s, or if you're handling one client versus seven. “A lot of what the strength and the resilience we get overtime comes from challenges,” says Marissa. “So it's this really interesting dynamic where I get stronger, I get tougher, I get better at problem solving, but I also get more tired and more worn out and full.” Remember that this isn't the only opportunity, and if you're clinging to the client or job as if it's your only chance, the energy you're giving out is one of desperation, need, and lack. Whereas if you recognize the opportunity, and think, “This is fantastic, I want to give it my best but I can't do that this month,” you can go back to the client thank them, and check if they can be flexible. The change is the delivery.  The ultimate self-care is tuning into what you personally need in that moment. Sometimes it will be a glass of water, sometimes it will be two weeks off. If you are having a really hard day, what would you crave to make that day feel better?  “All of those things we should be doing for ourselves and it shouldn't be lost. It's just as important as any other project we're working on,” says Marissa. How to have a life when you run a business by yourself

Back in 2011 I left corporate and started my first business, Beautifully Organised. I wanted more control over my time, to run my own schedule and to work on my terms. I wanted to be home for my young children more instead of having to work long hours, evenings and weekends. I wanted my work to fit around my life, and over the past 13 years I've worked with a lot of small business owners who want that too. Now for me, work life balance was a windy road.  Beautifully Organised started as an in person service, where I would go to other mums' homes and physically help them organise it so that their day would flow more smoothly around their young families. Here's how to set up your kitchen so making dinner at witching hour is easier, here's how to set up your bathroom so it's quick and easy to clean right after bath time, that kind of thing. The ironic part was within just a couple of months, I was working just as long hours as I was before, I was away from my kids for the same amount of time, and I was responsible for everything - not just organising for my customers, but the marketing, sales, customer service… everything. I burnt out in a few months. My corporate job was inflexible, but at least it was a regular pay check and I could turn off when I wasn't at work. If I wanted more balance, if I wanted to work in a way that aligned with my dream lifestyle rather than dictated what it would be like, I needed to be more strategic about how my business worked. So at that point, I decided to make some changes. It took a lot of trial and error, but these days Beautifully Organised is an online business, and I make money sharing my organising tips via courses instead of personally going to people's homes and organising them myself anymore. I have a very simple business model, and that's actually what freed me up to start The Simpler Business podcast in the first place! I like to work a couple of hours a day, and I limit my private clients in this business to a handful so I'm not overworked anymore. I also made a few other changes to my approach to running my business and thought I'd share them in case you find them helpful! Here's what I do each year to run my 2 businesses and still have a life I love with plenty of down time. --- Ready to simplify your business? You started your business so you could do what you LOVE and do it on your own terms. How's that working out for you so far? Because when Marissa first started her original business at Beautifully Organised, she spent some time doing what she enjoyed, but she also had to spend a lot of time trying to find her next client, and the one after that, and the one after that. With a service based business, almost all of us start out undercharging because we're worried about whether a potential client will say yes to working with us, and we've done so much work just finding this person and getting in front of them that the last thing we want to do is chase them away with a price they aren't happy with! That leads to us working more hours than we expected just to make enough money to cover the bills. And there's only so many clients we can serve in a week! After a few months of this, it doesn't feel like we LOVE what we do anymore, and we're certainly not doing it on our own terms. But without putting time, effort, or money into marketing, we can't get clients, and without clients, we don't have a business, right? Not necessarily - in fact our guests today say you can make more and work less without relying on any of the typical things we do to market ourselves like relying on social media, a fancy opt-in, or any ad spend. Abagail Pumphrey and Emylee Williams are the business fairy godmothers behind Boss Project and the hosts of the chart-topping podcast, The Strategy Hour. They're internet-famous for their program, Trello for Business, which Marissa personally has and loves because it breaks down boring and complicated systems into easier, bite-sized chunks. They have helped more than 10 thousand creative small business owners create simplicity and ease in reaching their goals. After getting their start in 2015 serving clients in the marketing and branding space, they now help other service based business owners reignite their offer, create systems for client experience, and get more of their time back inside their program, The Incubator. Tune in as Marissa chats with Abagail and Emylee about building a life-first business, growing your biz without being on social media all the time, running ads or making multiple lead magnets and opt ins, and what service based business owners should focus on instead of marketing! 10 Ways to automate, delegate & simplify your life

Life is busy, and most of us would LOVE more downtime and less frantic rushing around every day. But all of the things still need to get done, or we'll end up with an even more overwhelming pile of things to do, and catching up will feel impossible! Even if we love our life and adore our families, we still shouldn't just exist to serve them. We need time for the things we enjoy, no matter what they are. I love reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching movies, and I used to feel guilty doing these things when I had responsibilities to take care of like cooking, cleaning, and doing the washing. But if I waited until those were done to do the things I enjoy? It would never happen because they'll never be done completely. There will always be more cooking to do. There will always be something that needs cleaning. There will always be laundry that needs to be washed. And those are just the basics! there's so much more to take care of. The good news is if we look at some of our day-to-day tasks at home and in life, there are a few little tweaks we can make to our approach towards them that can give us a lot more freedom. Here are some of my favourite ways to automate, delegate, and simplify, to free up my time and enjoy my life more! ----- Mentioned in this episode: Eat at Home Meal Plans (affiliate link), Marissa's 31 day meal plan, House & Family Binder, Beautifully Organised free resources, ----- Enjoyed this episode? We discuss how she has developed her style and process over time as well as building her audience and brand. One of the key motivators and drivers of her career has been the big projects she's been involved with. Kate produced a towel in collaboration with Local Heroes for their Daytrippers project with V&A Dundee. We also talk about her involvement in this year's Dundee Design Festival and how a collaboration with @badbish created the most successful space in the whole festival. instagram.com/katescarletdesigner/ vam.ac.uk/dundee/event/313/daytrippers katescarletharvey.com/
