Created in 1996 by the late Benjamin L. Hooks and the University of Memphis, the Hooks Institute's mission is to teach, study and promote civil rights and social change. The Institute addresses contemporary racial, social, economic and other disparities through community engagement and faculty scholarship. Whitehaven native, Marvin Todd, has an extensive skillset in the areas of marketing, project management and strategic planning and implementation. Marvin currently serves as a Marketing Manager at FedEx corporate after mastering numerous roles during his eighteen-year tenure. He's the Board Chair for Vision Prep Charter School, Board Member of Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change and is a mentor for youth via recreational sports programs at the Kroc Center. Marvin is also an entrepreneur and owns his own marketing & promotions company called Marvin Todd Marketing. Take a listen as Marvin discusses his current role at FedEx and how the pandemic has affected business both domestically and globally. In addition, Marvin shares many lessons learned over the past thirteen years as a curator in Memphis nightlife. He also speaks on breaking barriers that are not traditionally urban when acquiring venues, passing the torch to upcoming curators and his thoughts on why nightlife is a male dominated industry. Marvin is currently undergoing new levels as he plans to open a new venue while simultaneously putting Memphis on the map to becoming a metropolitan force.

Dr. SunAh M Laybourn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Memphis, an Affiliate Faculty Member for the Center for Workplace Diversity & Inclusion, and an Academic Research Fellow of the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Maryland (2018). Her research examines racialization processes and cross-racial interaction. Dr. Laybourn is the co-author of Diversity in Black-Greek Letter Organizations: Breaking the Line (Routledge 2018). Her work has been published in Social Problems, Sociology of Race & Ethnicity, Racial & Ethnic Studies, and Asian Pacific American Law Journal, among others. Her next book project, tentatively titled Adoptable Orphan, Deportable Immigrant: The Paradoxes of Exceptionalism (under contract with NYU Press) examines immigration, citizenship, and belonging through the case of Korean transnational transracial adoptees and citizenship rights advocacy. In addition to her work in academia, Dr. Laybourn is an Advisory Council Member for the Korean American Adoptee Adoptive Family Network and a member of The Global Citizen Collective board of directors.
