In March 2024, the Australian Senate resolved that the Select Committee on Adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) be established to inquire into and report on the opportunities and impacts for Australia arising out of the uptake of AI technologies in Australia. The committee intends to report to the Parliament on or before 19 September 2024.More than 40 Australian AI experts made a joint submission to the Inquiry. The submission from Australians for AI Safety calls for the creation of an AI Safety Institute. “Australia has yet to position itself to learn from and contribute to growing global efforts. To achieve the economic and social benefits that AI promises, we need to be active in global action to ensure the safety of AI systems that approach or surpass human-level capabilities.” “Too often, lessons are learned only after something goes wrong. With AI systems that might approach or surpass human-level capabilities, we cannot afford for that to be the case.”This session has gathered experts and specialists in their field to discuss best practice alignment of AI applications and utilisation to safety and cybersecurity requirements. This includes quantum computing which is set to revolutionise sustainability, cybersecurity, ML, AI and many optimisation problems that classic computers can never imagine. In addition, we will also get briefed on: OWASP Top 10 for Large Language Model Applications; shedding light on the specific vulnerabilities LLMs face, including real world examples and detailed exploration of five key threats addressed using prompts and responses from LLMs; Prompt injection, insecure output handling, model denial of service, sensitive information disclosure, and model theft; How traditional cybersecurity methodologies can be applied to defend LLMs effectively; and How organisations can stay ahead of potential risks and ensure the security of their LLM-based applications.PanelistsDr Mahendra SamarawickramaDirector | Centre for Sustainable AIDr Mahendra Samarawickrama (GAICD, MBA, SMIEEE, ACS(CP)) is a leader in driving the convergence of Metaverse, AI, and Blockchain to revolutionize the future of customer experience and brand identity. Moscow held its municipal elections last weekend, and the event received an unusual amount of attention from the world's media. There seems to be an unprecedented level of public criticism of Putin, but it's coming from the local municipal level and not from the parliament, the Duma. Today I am exploring who these local council representatives are, and what risks they are taking by speaking out. He had an 'a-ha' moment that this is where it's at - Information Systems. He hit the books, self-studied, went back to school with GI bill - went through courses, spinning stuff up and tinkering to have enough of a background to function. Had basic networking skills and sensitized to it already. Got his Masters 5:59 - First Job at AT&T Low paying, but learned a lot in networking Could make his own Cat 5 and troubleshoot a network to round out his background 6:18 - First Engineering Role in Cybersecurity Still felt like I knew nothing Stayed late, constant research, networking, put in the effort early on His military background helped him with the detect part and making it make sense to the right people - being able to articulate. Mentoring - he created a mind map with all the different stuff you can do in cybersecurity. Start with Security Engineer, then into Security Architect, then Cloud Architect, then pivot into leadership, for example. If goal is to be a CISO - yes, you can get there from Analyst 14:53 - Using Intuition in Cybersecurity (is he going to host a podcast on this topic soon)? "This is something near and dear to my heart - I feel like I get data from things and situations on a different frequency than most and can quickly address problems." In Intelligence this was invaluable and it helped him get a lot of success there In cybersecurity it's not much different - there's a lot of people like this - we have quirkiness and different personalities in cyber, high on IQ side and they have high intuition - they just know where to go and look for problems and answers. It's not something out of the text book. 33:25 - Parting Thoughts and Fear I am on the low end of the fear scale - try and take my energy and be proactive vs. worry. On a scale of 1-10, I hover at a 3. I have times where I have to remind myself to relax and I creep up to a 6 or 7. In a leadership level, bring a sense of calm - keep everyone focused and calm on the mission. As much as I understand why the fear factor is high right now, I choose to stay focused on a 3 and be proactive.

For those living with rare diseases, such as PI, it is important to have a strong voice in state government and advise policymakers on critical issues related to access, coverage, and the diseases themselves. Many state policymakers are unaware of the challenges the rare disease community faces. To help bridge these gaps in knowledge, Rare Disease Advisory Councils or RDACs are created. RDACs serve as an advising body and liaison between the rare disease community and state governments. With us today to discuss their work with RDACs in their state is a panel of IDF advocates: Jessica Goddard and Rachel Goddard from South Carolina, and Marian Furst from Utah.

This event is sponsored by the Asia Initiative Lecture Series at The Institute of World Politics. About the lecture: The problems arising from the presence of North Korean refugees in China warrant a human security approach, meriting protection from the UN and the international community. There are three scenarios dreaded by the refugees: first is being caught by North Korean border patrol while trying to escape; second is being subjected to human trafficking ring; and third is being repatriated after being caught by either the Chinese police or North Korea's own secret police operating in China. Despite the 1995 agreement between the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and China, which provides the UNHCR unimpeded access to all refugees within China, the UNHCR has been passive in exerting its mandate to protect the North Korean refugees. One possible solution is the construction of a refugee camp in China or Mongolia. If China allowed for this, it would catapult itself as a genuine “soft power” deserving of the much-coveted G2 status. Otherwise, China's leadership ambition, UNHCR's reputation, and most importantly, human rights of the refugees will remain in jeopardy so long as the discriminatory sŏngbun system in North Korea continues. About the speaker: Ambassador Jung-Hoon Lee is Dean and Professor of International Relations at the Graduate School of International Studies, Yonsei University. He is formerly the ROK government's Ambassador for Human Rights as well as its inaugural Ambassador-at-Large for North Korean Human Rights. On campus, he served as Dean of the Underwood International College and the Office of International Affairs. He has also served as Director of the Institute of Modern Korean Studies, the Yonsei Human Liberty Center, the Center for American Studies (IEWS), and the Center for European Studies (IEWS). His other academic affiliations include a visiting professorship at the Dept. of Politics, Faculty of Law, Keio University, and a senior fellowship at Harvard Kennedy School's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. Ambassador Lee has advised South Korea's National Unification Advisory Council, Ministry of Unification, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Council, and the National Assembly. In the case of the Ministry of Unification, he chaired the Advisory Committee for Humanitarian Affairs. His current domestic commitments include his role as Chairman of SaveNK, an NGO that helps the defector community, Senior Advisor to the Future Korea Weekly, a current affairs magazine, and Chairman of the Board of Tongwon Educational Foundation. Internationally, he is a Board Member of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) based in Washington, D.C., an International Patron of the Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based organization that promotes Hong Kong's democracy, and an Advisory Council Member of the International Bar Association's Human Rights Institute, also based in London. He received his BA from Tufts University, MALD from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, and D.Phil. from the University of Oxford (St. Antony's College). In 2017, he published Tongbukah Kyŏkrang ui Hanbokp'anesŏ [In the Midst of a Northeast Asian Current]. His most recent journal contributions include “Déjà Vu in South Korea? In 2011, Valoria Walker’s mother was nearing her end of life. While Valoria’s sister was her primary caregiver, Valoria provided respite care when she could. There was a point when her mother’s health was in serious decline and she was moved from the hospital to hospice. She had chosen to end her dialysis treatments and did not want to be on a ventilator.   Valoria was there with her. Within a couple of hours, her mother was started on powerful anti-anxiety meds and soon slipped into unconsciousness. Hospice staff explained that “sometimes, they don’t awaken, again.”   While her actually passing wasn’t immediate, essentially, her mother was gone and Valoria and her sister would not have another chance to have those final, oh-so-important conversations with their mother. There was no closure. No goodbye. Valoria’s brother missed the whole experience!   Not surprisingly, this was a powerful turning point for Valoria; one that would change her life and the course of her work. She began working on Advance Planning Directives, to help others in similar situations have a different experience, to help those who were anticipating their own passing to have a say in what would happen and how the process would progress.   Eventually, she found “Doula” training, jumped in, and formed her practice: Doula by Destiny! Her mission is to ensure others don’t have the same kind of experience her family had.   Her time now is spent helping others plan for their transitions thoughtfully, so that the individual’s wishes are known and honored. She gets to know and support whole families. She is able to have potentially uncomfortable conversations that loved ones may avoid.   She notes that while we seem to be getting better about talking about death – before it happens – there’s still a lot of fear and discomfort associated with it. She wants to reframe how we think about, talk about, and experience it.   Listen in as Valoria and host, Laura Prisc, share experiences, insights, and resources that may help you have a different experience when the time comes.   Valoria’s Bio:   Valoria Walker is an Advance Care Planning Trainer and End-of-Life Doula. She is the founder of her private practice called Doula by Destiny. As COVID-19 continued to spread, Valoria pivoted her business to serve patients and caregivers by providing companion calls and virtual meetings.   Valoria partners with organizations to promote the significance of advance care planning for medical emergencies and holistic care at the end of life. Serving as a speaking ambassador to bring awareness of The End-of-Life Doula Movement, her desire is for everyone to achieve comfort and peace at the end of life.   Her recent accomplishments include her interview, Parting Gift, published in the October edition of The Oprah Magazine. She is the reigning Grand Prize winner of the 2019 Boom Competition sponsored by AARP.   Her plans are to continue supporting individuals in various care settings to stay connected to her calling and the community. She sits as an Advisory Council Member, International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA), and End-of-Life Doula Advisory Council Member for NHPCO.  Valoria holds a Master's in Management of Aging Services. She believes receiving a degree is an accomplishment, but having compassion is a gift.   Connect with Valoria + Resources:  Oprah Magazine – Parting Gift  What is a Doula? Article  Let’s Talk Aging Article  Human Composting? Article  Recompose Life – Composting Service

Why Listen: There is so much to love about today's interview. First of all on the professional side, Matt went from the Army National Guard and an unexpected departure into opening a series of nutrition supplement franchises that built up a skill set for him to then start his own performance supplement company, actually creating and selling many of these products, and then to his current role with company called Fit Ops which is doing absolutely unbelievable things in the military community training people physically, mentally, and emotionally,. II just loved so much of what Matt had to share in this interview. We cover a lot of ground in this interview we talk about things like mentorship, finding clarity through, of all things daydreaming. Finding one's purpose through a combination of authenticity, excitement and discomfort. And we talk about letting your gut guide you in decisions. And I love in particular Matt's thoughts about not discounting yourself not counting yourself out from the dreams and aspirations that you have. This is both an informative interview, but it's also a very inspirational conversation and I think you'll really enjoy this this episode. I want to give a special thanks to the Carlson School of Management, whose financial sponsorship made this interview possible. I want to share a little bit more about them, because while many people talk about supporting the military community, the Carlson School of Management, put their money where their mouth was and literally gave us the funds to produce five or six new episodes which you'll see in the next couple of weeks. So whether you're transitioning to civilian career or continuing military service, an MBA from Carlson at the University of Minnesota prepares you for a high impact career in business. Carlson is committed to the veteran community and provides the benefits experiencial learning and network to accelerate your career. In addition to a resident tuition waiver all admitted full time MBA military candidates receive generous scholarships and stipends to cover expenses that may not be eligible for the GI Bill.
