In “We Sure Eat Good When Someone Dies,” Gravy producer Caleb Johnson takes listeners back to August 2024, when his extended family gathered inside a Baptist church in Arley, Alabama, to mourn the loss of their matriarch—his grandmother, Celia Sampley. Before the funeral service, the church served lunch for the family, including chicken and dumplings, green-bean casserole, and plenty of desserts. A particular cake caught Caleb's eye that day, called a pea picking cake. In this episode, Caleb steps into the kitchen of the woman who baked that memorable cake and explores how eating something sweet helps us process grief. The cook's name is Sandra Stewart, and she was a good friend of Caleb's grandmother. They attended Bethel Baptist Church together for many years. When it came time to bake something for the funeral wake, Sandra looked through her large recipe book. She chose a pea picking cake because all the ingredients she needed were already in her pantry. Her choice was mainly for convenience. Traditionally, recipes for pea picking cake call for using a box cake mix. The first box cake mix was created in the 1930s, but it didn't become popular until after World War II. Caleb talks with food historian KC Hysmith about the mysterious origins of the pea picking cake and how it fits into a tradition of fancy box cakes that grew popular in the second half of the twentieth century, a time when home cooks started using more store-bought, convenience ingredients. Caleb also speaks with Dr. Candi K. Cann, a professor of religion at Baylor University and a self-described death scholar, about funeral traditions involving food around the world. She explains that these traditions help mourners revisit meaningful relationships. However, despite the close link between funerals and foodways, Dr. Cann says Americans aren't taught how to navigate grief, partly because individualism is a key part of the Protestant faith. She believes this has led to less emphasis on communal meals like the one served at Caleb's grandmother's wake. *** This episode was reported by Caleb Johnson. On this compelling episode of Cure America, host Donald T. Eason addresses the childhood obesity crisis, with 25% of Black youth facing serious risks like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease. Dr. Michelle Perro, a 44-year pediatrician who rose from NYC's Lower East Side, and Ruth Westreich, founder of The Westreich Foundation, expose the dangers of toxic school lunches (93% containing glyphosate) and processed foods, as outlined in their report The Weight of a Nation. Perro, founder of GMO Science, urges organic whole foods and family cooking to combat addictive “bliss point” foods. Westreich, a South-Central LA native who overcame homelessness, champions affordable healthy eating for all. Later, Pastor Steven Perry of Detroit's Bethel Baptist Church joins, spotlighting 1,500+ community gardens transforming vacant lots since 2003.

When Jesus looks at the world he sees only two types of people. There are people who are blessed by God (see verses 20-23) and there are people who are cursed by God (see verses 24-26). Those who embrace Jesus by repentance and faith are the blessed recipients of God's favor, while those who do not are the cursed recipients of his righteous judgment. In this sermon by Jesus in Luke 6:20-26, he teaches us what these two different types of people look like and he points us to what their final outcome will be, both of which comprise quite a surprising reversal. As you listen, let me encourage you to consider which of these two descriptions that Jesus gives best fits your life. Are you the one to whom Jesus is saying "Blessed are you who..." or are you the one to whom Jesus is saying "Woe to you who...?" If, after listening, you find that you are in that second category, then my prayer to you is that this sermon would lead to you to the type of godly sorrow over sin that Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 7:10 - "For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret."This episode is a sermon that was originally given by Jackson Hankey at Bethel Baptist Church in Park River, ND, on April 13th, 2025.
Mrs. Jeanette C. McAllister went into the Lord's presence early Monday morning, April 21, 2025. Born on September 30, 1932, Jeanette was a daughter of the late Leonard and Carrie Cheshire of Gainesville, Florida. Mac and Jeanette were married on February 14, 1953. And together they raised two sons. They began their marriage working in Savannah, Georgia, and then a few years later moved to north Alabama where they resided for over 50 years. They lived in Decatur, Huntsville, and Hartselle. Jeanette worked for Sears for many years while Mac worked for the Goodyear Service Stores. They first met in Gainesville, Florida, while working together at Goodyear. They served as faithful members of several independent Baptist churches in north Alabama. They were members of Bethel Baptist Church in Hartselle, Alabama for many years. Jeanette loved showing hospitality in the home and working outside in her yard, at the church, or Baptist World Missions. She was a great cook and homemaker but in her mature years, would rather work outside. Jeanette was often the "life of the party" with a winsome, humorous personality. This continued through the conclusion of her life. People loved her immensely. She loved the Lord and was always joyful for how good God is. She loved singing in church choirs and in the home! She lived a life of triumph for her Savior over early life obstacles.

Lessons in Spiritual Leadership – Part 2 (Acts 20:7-38) by Bethel Baptist Church
This episode is a sermon on the Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) that was preached by Jackson Hankey on November 10th, 2024, at Bethel Baptist Church in Park River, ND. The Lord's Prayer is perhaps the most well known and most repeated passage in the entire Bible. Yet, it seems that very few of us have really understood it and taken it to heart. Many of us, in spite of it's familiarity, have been entirely unaffected by it's meaning, especially in our own prayer lives. Yet, the Lord's Prayer in reality is a glorious manifesto of the heart of Biblical Prayer. At the same time, it is both wonderfully profound and remarkably simple. Surely, we would do well to learn about prayer from the Master himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. Nowhere else in the Bible do we find the command to "Pray then like this."
