Arek O'Connell shares how God turned painful trauma into healing balm

The Grand Awakening Podcast

Arek O'Connell is an Outreach and Young Adult Pastor at Hillside Community Church in Grand Rapids, MI, where he has served faithfully since 2013. He has been married to his wife Jamie for 14 years and they have two children (Kaia;5 -and- Leighton;4). Arek is currently working on his Doctor of Ministry at Gordon Conwell where his thesis will be focused on spiritual healing from trauma. The work that brings Arek the most joy is teaching trauma classes in high-needs communities and being the chaplain for the East Kentwood varsity football team.  In this podcast, Arek shares about his very turbulent background where, as a child, he experienced a home full of trauma and pain, which included multiple divorces and significant animosity and even cruelty. But, by the grace of God, as a young teen, Arek was greatly helped by a loving pastor who took Arek under his wing and brought him to saving faith in Christ. His life was radically changed! Yet, as Arek began to attend a Christian college in California, the external trauma suddenly got even worse as Arek's father was viciously murdered. Arek shared how God clearly, miraculously, and even surprisingly empowered him to reach out to his father's murderer in love and forgiveness, and actually lead that man to faith in Christ! Finally, Arek shared what a joy it has been to be chaplain of East Kentwood High School's football team. Despite EK being a public high school, his players have chosen to lovingly pray with their opponents' teammates after each game. Truly amazing! God is certainly on the move among Gen Z young people in our nation!

Your Heart Magic
On pain as balm, trusting your heart, and the tender art of becoming

Your Heart Magic

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 16, 2025 22:06 Transcription Available

A tender question sits at the center of this conversation: what happens when we trust the heart more than the plan? We follow that thread through three original readings from Revelations of the Sky and into the lived terrain of starting over, moving from Alaska to Kauai, and rebuilding identity with fewer titles and more truth. Along the way, we challenge the myth of a single calling, exploring purpose as plural—something we practice in small daily choices, not just in big career moves—and invite permission to experiment with language, work, and self-expression.We talk openly about grief as a beginning rather than an end point: the catalyst that widened the path to spirituality, intuition, and creative risk. If you identify as sensitive or empathic, you'll hear a reframe you might need today: feeling deeply is not a flaw to fix but a strength to master. That intensity can hurt, but it also heals—it's the same openness that lets joy register in bright color and makes meaning easier to find in ordinary moments. From that place, wisdom becomes less theoretical and more embodied, tempered by trial, mistake, and the quiet kind of courage that accrues over time. The final movement is a call to be seen. Not as a performance, but as an act of alignment—peeling back old skins, integrating professional expertise with spiritual gifts, and allowing your voice to carry the life you've actually lived. Trust here isn't a leap into nothing; it's a series of grounded steps toward what feels alive. If you've been waiting for permission to shine, consider this your gentle green light. Listen, reflect, and then tell us: where is your heart asking you to go next? If this conversation resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review so more seekers can find their way here.Tune in next week for a new episode to support and empower your light--Your Heart Magic is a space where heart wisdom, spirituality, and psychology meet. Balm To The Soul
What a Thai Village Can Teach Us About Modern Wellness with Nuttha Goutier

Balm To The Soul

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2025 34:28 Transcription Available

Send us a textWhat can a traditional Thai village teach us about modern wellness and business success? Nuttha Goutier's remarkable journey provides an answer to this question through lived experience rather than theory.Born in a remote Thai village with no electricity or modern amenities, Nuttha launched her first business at age eight, selling coffee and hot chocolate at the local market. This early entrepreneurship instilled a powerful belief in her abilities that would shape her future. The village's collective approach to life—where neighbors naturally gathered to build houses, harvest crops, and care for the sick without being asked—formed the foundation of her business philosophy. When Nuttha witnessed her grandfather's recovery from a stroke through traditional herbal treatments and massage after hospital care had limited success, her passion for natural healing was ignited. This experience led her through various beauty and wellness ventures in Thailand before eventually bringing her to Canada, where the cultural "coldness" inspired her to create a warm, immersive space that would transport people to Thailand without boarding a plane. With less than a thousand dollars but unlimited determination, Nuttha established Sabai Thai Spa through an inspiring system of trades—lawyers, artists, and web developers exchanged their services for massages. Her vision went beyond transactions; she created a sensory experience that reconnects people with their natural selves while fostering community among staff and clients alike. After 20 years of learning "through the school of hard knocks," Nuttha has expanded into franchising to share her proven business model. Her approach to wellness is refreshingly straightforward: preventative self-care should be scheduled like important meetings, not saved for special occasions. "If you don't have good health, nothing else matters," she reminds us, echoing wisdom from her village upbringing.Start your day like Nuttha —with brief meditation, yoga, and expressing gratitude. Choose joy deliberately, live in the moment, and make self-care a priority. Your body, mind, and spirit will thank you.Subscribe to Balm to the Soul for more conversations that nourish your wellbeing and inspire your journey.Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/sky-toes/featherlightLicense code: ZTXJPK8BA5WMLKSF My new novel The Red Magus has recently been published in conjunction with the Unbound Press. She came over and said, “Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.” The Lord answered and told her, “Martha, Martha, you are worked and upset about many things, but one thing is needed. In fact, Mary has chosen that better part, which will not be taken away from her.” (EHV) - Devotion - Did You Think to Pray: Ere you left your room this morning, Did you think to pray? Carshina lye [was used] to rub on the onycha to improve its appearance. Wine from Cyprus served for steeping the onycha, to intensify [its fragrance]. Although the water of Raglayim could have served that purpose, the water of Raglayim was not brought into the Beis HaMikdash out of respect. It is taught that Rabbi Nassan said: As [a priest] would grind the incense, [another] would say: “Grind thoroughly; thoroughly grind,” for the sound is beneficial for the spices. If one mixed the compound in half quantities, it was fit for use. If only a third or a quarter [of the prescribed compound] was mixed, we have not heard [whether or not it would be fit for use].Rabbi Yehudah said: The general rule is that if it was mixed in its proper proportions, it is fit for use even though it was compounded in half-quantities [or even in lesser quantities].[A person who] left out one [of the spices] was liable to the death penalty [at the hands of Heaven].It is taught that Bar Kappara says: Once every sixty or seventy years, the accumulated surpluses would amount to half [the required annual amount].Bar Kappara also taught: Had [even] a minute quantity of honey been added to it, no man would have been able to resist the aroma. Why, then, were they not to mix honey into it? Isaiah 41:10, "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My victorious right hand!" There is no balm more comforting to the trembling believer, than the direct and personal promises of God. In this verse, the Lord Himself speaks with fatherly tenderness and sovereign authority to calm the fears and strengthen the hearts of His redeemed people. Here is no vague encouragement, but the very voice of the Almighty pledging His own presence, power, and preservation. "Do not be afraid, for I am with you." Fear vanishes when the believer realizes who walks beside him. The God who made and governs all things--the One before whom nations are like dust on the scales--has pledged to be with His people. Not merely near them, but with them: protecting, guiding, and sustaining them. To fear, then, is to forget who God is and what He has promised. "Do not be discouraged, for I am your God." Discouragement creeps in when trials seem insurmountable and the soul feels faint. But when the believer remembers that God is his almighty Father, then discouragement is silenced. He has joined Himself to His people with everlasting love, and He will not forsake the work of His hands. "I will strengthen you and help you." Our weakness is not a hindrance to God's grace--it is the very reason He comes to us with divine strength. What we lack, He provides. What we cannot do, He accomplishes through us. He does not merely cheer us from afar, but enters the battle with us and protects us by His might. "I will uphold you with My victorious right hand!" The right hand of God is the place of power, author

Monte Deere and his brother Michael were born just 14 months apart—the kind of brothers who shared a bedroom—and a paper route—even when they didn't have to. So, when Michael took his own life while Monte and his wife were serving as mission leaders in the Spain Malaga Mission, Monte found himself grieving in a foreign country far away from his family. Since returning home, Monte has dealt with health challenges that have disrupted his own quality of life—even causing him to be released from a church calling he loved. On this week's episode, Monte shares how he has been a recipient of the balm that only the Savior can provide. “I think being all in for Him is creating a little space for Him, listening to Him say, ‘Come, let me pick you up. Let me brush you off. Let me apply a little salve, a little balm. And let me give you some bread and some spiritual water. Let me clean you from the inside out and then you can be back being all in on the things that you choose but give me room, give me space. Let me love you. Let me do for you what you can't do for yourself, what only I can do.'” 1:43- A Father's Example of Hard Work 5:01- Watching an Adult Sibling Struggle 12:29- A Family Called to Serve 17:54- Devastating News 21:51- Salve From the Spirit 24:48- Unexpected Health Challenges 35:34- A Wake Up Call 37:56- Lifting the Hands Which Hang Down 41:42- What Does It Mean To Be All In the Gospel of Jesus Christ Links: Elder Renlund on suicide -  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAYgY8SPtEWH5oAfQlfGFyKk77nf-S-tH President Ballard on suicide -https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/ensign/1987/10/suicide-some-things-we-know-and-some-we-do-not?lang=eng
