“Confounding, Confounding, Confounding” is like the epidemiologist's version of “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” from the Brady Bunch. To discuss Chapter 7 of Causal Inference: What If, we welcome Dr. Ashley Naimi. In this chapter, we discuss confounding as a central problem when estimating causal effects from observational data. The chapter emphasizes that confounding is not just an imbalance in covariates across exposure groups, but a causal problem that depends on the underlying structure of how treatment, outcome, and other variables are related. In this episode, Dr. Naimi helps explain concepts related to confounding, exchangeability, and faithfulness. We (try to) talk through confounding-related DAGs and how they are a useful tool to understand confounding bias.  This episode shows why confounding gets so much attention in epidemiology: it is everywhere, often misunderstood, and, like Marcia Brady, it has a way of stealing the spotlight.

FLASHBACK! Perhaps one of the most puzzling comics releases in years was The Book of Genesis, Illustrated by R. Crumb. While it's a virtuoso art performance, the exact purpose of the book was puzzling to Crumb fans (“It's not a parody?!”) and religious readers (“This comic is not for kids?!”) alike. Both groups have been taken aback by how straight Crumb plays it — neither parodying nor bowdlerizing the work. That's not to say that nothing in it is Crumb's own interpretation. Tim and John discuss the issues raised — both by Crumb and by his audience. (Originally published August 18, 2014.) Brought to you by: Face the Music ELO podcast Our supporters on Patreon

Ian Happ might be the most confounding player on the Chicago Cubs. Every season he seems to produce the same profile: around 20–25 home runs, a strong on-base percentage, and a wRC+ comfortably above league average. Over the last four seasons he's also quietly accumulated more than 13 WAR while playing nearly every day in left field. And yet, if you spend any time around Cubs Twitter or baseball message boards, you know the debate never really stops. Is Ian Happ actually a key piece of the lineup, or is he a player the Cubs should replace? In this episode of CubsPS+, I take a deep dive into Ian Happ's performance over the last four seasons and try to put his production into context across Major League Baseball. I look at how Happ ranks among qualified MLB hitters, how he compares to other outfielders around the league, and where his offensive numbers stack up using metrics like wRC+, WAR, OPS, walk rate, and strikeout rate. I also dig into leverage splits and situational hitting to see whether the common criticism that Happ “isn't clutch” actually holds up in the data. Along the way, I explore what a 3-WAR player really means in today's game, how much that level of production typically costs on the open market, and why players with Happ's statistical profile tend to show up on winning teams more often than fans might realize. I'm not arguing that Ian Happ is a superstar. He's not. But when you zoom out and look at the consistency of his production, the numbers paint a much clearer picture of what he actually brings to the Cubs. Sometimes the most interesting players in baseball aren't the obvious stars or the struggling role players. Sometimes they're the ones who quietly produce year after year while the conversation around them never quite settles. That's exactly what makes Ian Happ such a fascinating player to analyze. Together, they examine what it takes to build public trust in nutrition and longevity science, and why clear, reproducible evidence matters more than ever. David highlights how public perception and scientific rigor can drift apart, especially in fields crowded with strong opinions and shifting trends.David shares sharp insights on weight management, challenging the idea that slow and steady always wins. He explains the “dentistry model” of weight loss, where maintenance matters more than one-time fixes, and explores why most people regain weight without ongoing support. The discussion cuts through assumptions about exercise, protein, and processed foods, showing where animal research aligns, or fails to align, with human studies.Throughout, David pushes for honest communication and transparency in science. He urges listeners to question hype, look past nutrition fads, and recognize the real limits of current evidence. The episode offers practical wisdom for anyone who wants to approach health, nutrition, and longevity with both curiosity and caution. Guest-at-a-Glance

Send us a textMethods & challenges of establishing causal relationships in health research, emphasizing epidemiology, randomized trials, and genetic approaches.Topics:Epidemiology: Studies disease influences using observational designs like case-control and prospective cohorts, plus trials, to identify patterns and test hypotheses.Hierarchy of evidence critique: Rejects rigid pyramids favoring RCTs, as all studies can be biased; advocates triangulation integrating varied data types for robust conclusions.RCT strengths & weaknesses: Randomization balances confounders, but issues like poor blinding, attrition, or subversion can undermine results; large samples may yield spurious precision if biased.Confounding & reverse causation: Examples include yellow fingers and lung cancer (both from smoking) or early atherosclerosis inflating CRP-disease links; hard to fully control statistically.Nutrition epidemiology: Observational studies often overstate benefits (e.g., vitamin E for heart disease), leading to failed trials; incentives favor new findings over revisiting errors.Mendelian randomization: Uses genetic variants as proxies for exposures (e.g., ALDH2 for alcohol metabolism) to mimic randomization; reveals no heart benefits from alcohol, unlike observational data.Negative controls: Tests implausible outcomes (e.g., smoking and murder) or exposures (e.g., paternal smoking in pregnancy) to check for confounding artifacts.Evidence triangulation: Combines diverse studies with different biases (e.g., cross-cultural comparisons) for causality; applied to dismiss HDL-raising drugs despite initial promise.Practical Takeaways:Scrutinize health claims by checking for negative controls or variety in evidence sources to avoid mistaking correlation for causation. For personal decisions like alcohol intake, consider genetic studies showing risks at all levels, and aim for moderation or abstinence based on overall evidence. When evaluating supplements or diets, prioritize trials over observational data, and question media hype that ignores confounding factors.About the guest: Dr. George Davey Smith, MD, DSc is a professor of clinical epidemiology at the University of Bristol and director of the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit.*Not medical advice.Support the showAffiliates: Lumen device to optimize your metabolism for weight loss or athletic performance. Dr. K unpacks the growing debate around acetaminophen (Tylenol) and its possible link to autism while cutting through the noise of headlines, political statements, and online panic. He explains what the data actually shows, why correlation doesn't equal causation, and how confounding variables like maternal illness, age, and chronic conditions can completely change how we interpret these studies. Using his background as both a psychiatrist and medical researcher, Dr. K breaks down what autism really is—a neurodevelopmental spectrum shaped by thousands of subtle genetic and environmental factors. He dives into how modern healthcare has unintentionally increased autism diagnoses through both better detection and the survival of high-risk births. The episode also examines the role of SSRIs, infections, and chronic illness in influencing risk, and why oversimplifying the problem could lead to worse outcomes. Topics include: What autism actually is and why it's a spectrum, not a single disorder Why autism rates are rising with better diagnosis vs. real risk factors The Tylenol connection: what studies really say about acetaminophen use in pregnancy Confounding variables: how illness and infection skew the data The role of maternal/paternal age, chronic illness, and environmental exposure SSRIs, pregnancy, and how risk statistics are often misunderstood Why demonizing one factor (like Tylenol) can cause more harm than good This episode offers a calm, science-based perspective on a heated topic reminding us that complex conditions like autism rarely have a single cause, and that real understanding requires nuance, not fear. The Confounding Tension Between Salvation And Repentance

One of the central tensions of the Christian life is reconciling unmerited salvation and earning our repentance. How can grace be completely free—given despite our sin—while we are also called to actively love others as Christ has loved us? Through the story of Zacchaeus the tax collector, Scripture reveals how these two truths coexist: we receive salvation as a free gift, yet we also embrace the cost of repentance for the sake of love. The good news of the Gospel is that salvation and love are utterly free. This marks the beginning of our redemptive love story with the Father and compels us to pay it forward by loving others in return. ------ Scripture: Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. 7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and the Confounding Politics of Junk Food. Plus, Kelefa Sanneh on the Long Influence of Kraftwerk

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been undermining public trust in vaccines and overseeing crippling cuts to research across American science. And yet his “make America healthy again” highlights themes more familiar in liberal circles: toxins in the environment, biodiversity, healthy eating. Kennedy has put junk food at the center of the political conversation, speaking about ultra-processed foods and their established links to chronic disease—despite President Donald Trump's well-known reverence for fast food of all kinds. Marion Nestle, a leading nutrition researcher and the author of “Food Politics,” has written in depth on how money and politics affect our diet and our health, and about the ways that American science research has been hampered by limited funding. She tells the physician and contributing writer Dhruv Khullar, who's been reporting on the American diet, that “it would be wonderful if R.F.K., Jr., could make the food supply healthier. I just think that in order to do that, he's going to have to take on the food industry, and I don't think Trump has a history of taking on corporations of any kind. . . . I'll believe it when I see it.” Kraftwerk—the pioneering electronic music group that débuted more than half a century ago —has been touring the U.S., with stops planned in Europe this year. The staff writer Kelefa Sanneh calls them one of the most influential bands of all time, playing a formative role in hip-hop, techno, EDM, and much of popular music as we know it. Sanneh picks tracks from Kraftswerk's repertoire and demonstrates how those sounds trickle out through music history, from Afrika Bambaataa to Coldplay.

Bewildering Blessings & Confounding Curses: Luke 6:20-26

When Jesus looks at the world he sees only two types of people. There are people who are blessed by God (see verses 20-23) and there are people who are cursed by God (see verses 24-26). Those who embrace Jesus by repentance and faith are the blessed recipients of God's favor, while those who do not are the cursed recipients of his righteous judgment. In this sermon by Jesus in Luke 6:20-26, he teaches us what these two different types of people look like and he points us to what their final outcome will be, both of which comprise quite a surprising reversal. As you listen, let me encourage you to consider which of these two descriptions that Jesus gives best fits your life. Are you the one to whom Jesus is saying "Blessed are you who..." or are you the one to whom Jesus is saying "Woe to you who...?" If, after listening, you find that you are in that second category, then my prayer to you is that this sermon would lead to you to the type of godly sorrow over sin that Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 7:10 - "For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret."This episode is a sermon that was originally given by Jackson Hankey at Bethel Baptist Church in Park River, ND, on April 13th, 2025.
