In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray sit down with Atlanta radio veteran, author and podcaster, Pete Davis. Well before Pete got into writing and podcasting, he thought he was going to be an actor. He wanted to move to LA and be a star. That was until he saw a live radio show. From that point, he was focused on a career on the air waves. And, sometimes, being at the right place at the right time is all a person needs. When the opportunity arose to be involved in an evening talk show, he ran with it. Along the way, he would bring up sports, movies, current events, politics, or whatever else happend to be in his head. However, no story would be as compelling without a little drama. At the height of Atlanta radio programming, WGST decided to launch a brand new branding strategy -- Planet Radio. It will forever go down in history as one of the biggest radio debacles in history. While Pete did manage to survive a lot of the turmoil, it did create some challenges for him. As he was bouncing around, he took up writing and put out a couple of books related to his love of sports. The first one is, "The Totally Biased Guide to College Football." The second is, "I Love Texas/I Hate Oklahoma," and the last is, "Canines of College Football." While using social media to help promote his writing, he decided to get into podcasting. He created the show, Holy Crap, It's Sports, which can be found on most pod-catchers. Given Pete's love of sports, it made sense to spend the last 10-15 minutes of our interview discussing some sports. You may or may not know the teams or the sports, but what you will quickly learn is it doesn't matter! Pete is such a funny guy, you just want to hear what he has to say. Pete was not able to stick around for the rest of the show., so after his interview, Alan and Walt spent time going through odd news stories. They closed the show with the entertainment segment, breaking down what they have been watching, reading and listening to over the last week. WATCHING Walt is almost done with Only Murders in This Building and highly recommends it. He has begun to dive into season 3 of The Movies that Made Us on Netflix and Bad Sports, also on Netflix. Alan saw Dune part 1 and could not praise it enough. He believes is it a cinematic masterpiece, akin to a Christopher Nolan film. He also suggests the YouTube reaction channels, Ashleigh Burton and Popcorn in Bed. READING We are just going to go past this section as both Alan and Walt have brains that function just above those of most primates and have not been able to turn the pages of a book in the last few weeks. LISTENING Walt continues to dive into the podcast series, The Murdaugh Murders. He has also been listening to The Thrilling Adventure Hour and Wondery. Alan contines to listen to the latest Iron Maiden album, Senjetsu. He also suggests the podcasts, 60MW and Radio Labyrinth. In late September, writer Saeed Jones lamented the selfishness and cruelty he'd witnessed during the pandemic: “I'm angry and sad and bitter,” he tweeted, adding, “This is not who I want to be.” In October, ProPublica published a story by journalist Sarah Smith with the headline “We're Losing Our Humanity and the Pandemic Is to Blame,” documenting stories of willful disregard for others' needs and concerns. We'll talk about what's fueling internal rage and public disputes everywhere from grocery stores to airplanes, and what the pandemic has exposed in our human relationships.

We've learned lots of ‘useful' information from watching movies. For example, how to effectively shoot back at an enemy or how to fly away in a spaceship through an asteroid belt. Well, life is long – you never know what could be useful! However, the big screen misleads us a lot, so we still believe in many myths that were created over the years. Do you know, for example, how long tracing a phone call really takes, or how long you should wait before reporting a missing person, or if it's possible to unlock a door with a gun? In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray and joined by Ian Willett, a podcast listener and champion of indie podcasts. Ian is a rare find in any audience. He enjoys listening to hundreds of podcasts each month. So, lots of people do that, right? What Ian does to set himself apart from so many others is by taking a few moments to thank them! He appreciates the time and effort that goes into creating an episode, so he makes sure to share the episode online. It's amazing how few will take just a minute to hit the "share" button on their pod-catcher and post something on social media. Ian doesn't just do that from time-to-time. He does it with every episode. And, on top of the individual attention, he puts out several posts every Friday, listing all podcasts he listens to. In many ways, Ian acts like a part of each podcast's marketing team. Ian helps to spread the word and grow the audience. Alan and Walt wanted to bring him on, not only to thank Ian, but also to shine a well-deserved spotlight on him. Building People Up While chatting, Ian discusses the first podcast he started to listen to and how it's grown to where it is today. They also chat about the sites and sounds of where they grew up and where they are today. It's a fantastic conversation that helps remind us, it's not hard to be kind, to do nice things for others and to appreciate the work of others. Social media makes it very easy to tear people down. Ian Willett is a guy who is doing his part to build people up and shine a light on their efforts. Once the interview piece concludes, Ian hangs out as Walt reviews another film he had to watch based on their weekly poll in their Facebook Group. Then, Alan and Walt share a few news stories that may have not made the local outlets. Finally, all three weigh-in on the entertainment segment, letting the audience know what they have been watching, reading and listening to over the past week. WATCHING Walt suggests the documentary, The Amazing Johnathon on Hulu. He also notes Tommy Boy, Jaws and Talladega Nights are all streaming this month. Finally, he really likes Ted Lasso on Apple TV. Alan went on a binge, watching Black Widow, finishing the series, What If...? on Disney+, Harry Potter movies 1-5 and Cry Macho on HBOMax. Alan also watched season's 2 and 3 of the Netflix series, The Movies that Made Us. Ian and his wife have been watching The Prodigal Son. Also, Ian has made a point of watching the Halloween movies for the first time, having watched 1 and 2 thus far. READING Alan is still trying to make time to read, "Dune," by Frank Herbert to get ready for the newest attempt to hit screens from director Denis Villeneuve. Ian has been going through the Stephen King novels via audio books. He finished Carrie and is halfway through Salem's Lot. Ian also recommends the audio book, "Sandman," by Neil Gaiman. Ian said the production value is incredible. LISTENING Walt caught The Dead and Co. live in concert and loved it. As to podcasts, for those who like true crime, he suggests The Murdaugh Murders. Alan just got Iron Maiden's 17th studio Album, Senjetsu, and thinks it may be one of their finest albums. He also suggests the New Age album Deep Breakfast by Ray Lynch for some trippy relaxation. Alan also revisted the Vangelis score to Blade Runner. As for podcasts, he suggests 60MW and The Great Escape Minute. Ian reminds everyone to follow him on Twitter @BitDead77 to get all of the shows he listens to. However, he did suggest a few he had just finished, including True Crime Campfire, Casefile, Riddle Me That and Chad (which is related to the game, Fallout). In fact, many of the games of this era still carry a hefty resale price on the secondary market. The magic of pinball and the world under glass was brought to life by Bally-Williams.   Many pinball personalities who purchased assets from the major manufacturers spent years trying to finish incomplete games or bring back a ‘new Bally-Williams'. They all failed because Bally-Williams was unique, it was an industry powerhouse where creativity, competition and magic were created.   This month we cover, our favourite 90's mechs, Dr. Who's Meat Slicer, Pat Lawlor's Magnum Opus, Rod Serling (or Ron Sterling), Code going too far, Gofers, Jpop and Williams dying again.     Sources: Pinside at Pinside.com Internet Pinball Database TopCast Pat Lawlor Chris Granner Adam Rhine                           Super Awesome Pinball Show 24 – Zophia Ryan   Estes, Ted. (DISCLAIMER: This episode contains a lot of spoilers for "Midnight Mass"!) Mike Flanagan's "Midnight Mass" revisits a lot of the themes of much of his previous work: grief, death, trauma, loss (and you can listen to our discussion of his "Haunting Of" Netflix series here). But it also covers some a lot of new ground, including the complicated relationship between human beings and the religions they build. It is a show grounded as much in humanity as it is in horror, and it asks more questions than it answers - and, in this way, it demonstrates an understanding of what religion is and how it works that is rare not only for the genre but for popular fiction in general. John has been unable to stop thinking about the series since it debuted three weeks ago, and so, desperate to talk about it, he invited the two most qualified voices on the subjects of horror and religion he knows - Dr. Kelly J. Baker, making her second appearance on the show, and Dan Colón, co-host and co-creator of Cage Club's The Monsters that Made Us. TWITTER/Links! The problem is that people have gotten used to thinking about water as a technical issue that can be solved by somebody sitting in a room somewhere with a white coat. The reality is that the history of water shows that this is probably the most political and salient issue of society–How we share the resources that make it possible for us to live is a fundamentally political problem. And in nations that live together under a social contract is fundamentally a constitutional problem. So my hope is that we elevate water to a much higher level of political discourse.”Giulio Boccaletti, Ph.D., is a globally recognized expert on natural resource security and environmental sustainability. Recent research has shown that oil companies knew about the threat of climate change decades ago. Yet over forty years, it has been revealed that they contributed millions of dollars to think tanks and campaigns to spread doubt and misinformation about climate change – its existence, the extent of the problem, and its cause. Across the US, these revelations have sparked a wave of lawsuits against the fossil fuel industry, demanding accountability for climate change – and now a US congressional committee has started to investigate. Executives from the world's biggest oil companies and trade groups have been called to testify before US lawmakers in October this year, in an inquiry modelled on the tobacco hearings of the 1990s, which paved the way for far tougher nicotine regulations. This week, The Climate Question looks over the evidence behind these allegations – and asks whether Big Oil might finally be facing a reckoning for its role in the climate crisis. Nature, it has been said, invites us to eat by appetite and rewards by flavor. But what exactly are flavors? Why are some so pleasing while others are not? Delicious is a supremely entertaining foray into the heart of such questions. With generous helpings of warmth and wit, Rob Dunn and Monica Sanchez offer bold new perspectives on why food is enjoyable and how the pursuit of delicious flavors has guided the course of human history. They consider the role that flavor may have played in the invention of the first tools, the extinction of giant mammals, the evolution of the world's most delicious and fatty fruits, the creation of beer, and our own sociality. Along the way, you will learn about the taste receptors you didn't even know you had, the best way to ferment a mastodon, the relationship between Paleolithic art and cheese, and much more. Blending irresistible storytelling with the latest science, Delicious: The Evolution of Flavor and How It Made Us Human (Princeton UP, 2021) is a deep history of flavor that will transform the way you think about human evolution and the gustatory pleasures of the foods we eat. Hussein Mohsen is a PhD/MA Candidate in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics/History of Science and Medicine at Yale University.
