listener comments? Feedback? Shoot us a text!We here at Tales From Aztlantis would like to issue the following public service announcement: PLEASE DO NOT rely on social media posts as your sole source of historical and archaeological information. This should not be a controversial statement. Yet every day, social media feeds are inundated with well-meaning individuals uncritically sharing and reposting pseudohistory without bothering to check the sources or seek outside information.Tik Tok, in particular is easily the worst offender when it comes to the spread of pseudohistory, pseudoarcheology, and general conspiracism. The speed with which a short video containing absolute nonsense can be created and shared on Tik Tok is truly impressive. And thanks to its algorithm, those who consume such disinformation are repeatedly inundated with more and more nonsense, creating a never-ending loop of paranoid conspiracism and pseudo historical group-think. One such outlandish claim that frequently pops up on pseudohistory-promoting social media sites is our topic for this episode: the battle of Cagayan. For those unfamiliar with the general narrative, it usually goes like this: “In 1582, a small, battle-hardened group consisting of 40 Tlaxkaltekah and Spanish soldiers defeated a thousand Japanese Samurai at the Battle of Cagayan in the Phillipines.” At face value this story sounds super badass. But is this actually what happened? Did a small band of spunky Tlaxkaltekah and Spanish soldiers really vanquish a THOUSAND Japanese Samurai in a Thermopylae-style beat down in the Phillipines? Let's find out! Your hosts: Kurly Tlapoyawa is an archaeologist, ethnohistorian, and filmmaker. Cathy and Troy break down the death of Pope Francis, a man of the people who brought progressive reform to the Catholic Church on issues of homosexuality and economic justice, following a decade of right-wing rule from his predecessor Pope Benedict who resigned in the middle of the church sex abuse scandal. We discuss who the next Pope may be, and hope for a Cardinal from the Phillipines who would be the first Asian pope and could continue the legacy of Francis. Or will the church shift back to the right with a euro-centric traditional Italian leader.Meanwhile, Trump embarrassed the U.S. at the Pope's funeral while enacting draconian policies at home.A judge is arrested trying to protect a migrant from ICE who was in her court to be tried for a misdemeanor. The Trump administration is moving the needle on dismantling the independence of the judiciary, and it will only be a matter of time before federal judges are arrested simply for blocking Trump's dictatorial orders.Meanwhile, Elon leaves DOGE to return to Tesla and finds it a complete dumpster fire as profits tank 71% in the first quarter of 2025. You'll hear what's behind the shift. And: In the coastal town of Shediac, New Brunswick - the population of immigrants from the Phillipines has grown exponentially. We'll tell you one woman's story of bringing authentic Filipino food - and another new business - to the community.Plus: The investigation into the killing of aid workers in Gaza, U.S. Supreme Court halts deportations by the Trump administration, and more.

We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here. Welcome to the hellscape that is 2025! We are back in the cave for episode 237, this time looking at two films from 1973, both shot largely in the Phillipines and both featuring dangerous women! We start off with "Devil Woman" which is known by several different names (and also listed with a variety of release dates) which focuses on a magical woman with snakes for hair who is seeking revenge on the people that killed her family. It's low-budget fun but not "good" by any metric. We follow that with "Wonder Women" fom show-favorite direct Robert Vincent O'Neil and with a stellar cast lead by Ross Hagen and Nancy Kwan. The plot revolves around an evil scientist with a money-making scheme to transplant healthy body parts from unwilling donors onto the bodies of rich people. Along comes agent Hagen who settles everybody's hash! It's a blast from beginning to end! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. She had every reason to quit—grief, financial struggles, and the challenge of protecting her late partner's dream. But instead of giving up, Abbey Tiu built Leilani Asian Fusion, a restaurant that honors Jason Morales' legacy. She also runs a successful mental health practice dedicated to helping others heal. How did she turn tragedy into success, and what can you learn from her journey? Watch until the end to find out.Abbey Tiu is a restaurateur and entrepreneur based in Aurora, Illinois. She is the owner of Leilani Asian Fusion, a dining establishment located in the historic Hobbs Building at 2 N. River St. in downtown Aurora. The restaurant, which opened on August 9, 2024, offers a diverse menu featuring inventive takes on sushi, steak, vegetarian dishes, boba (bubble tea), and signature cocktails. Leilani Asian Fusion also houses an underground lounge called Forbidden City, inspired by Southeast Asian nightclubs, offering rum-inspired craft cocktails, beer, and wine. Let's just begin by saying there is nothing in Nashville like Pitch Meeting, Eric Fortaleza's weekly musical highwire act. Billed as “Nashville's Best Writer's Open Mic” the weekly show, which resumes this Tuesday February 25th features a powerhouse band of Nashville heavies (often of 10 or more players) whose job it is to back the any songwriter who's name is drawn from dozens of hopeful singer-songwriters. The catch - no one has heard the song, not the audience, and more importantly, not the band.“No chord charts, no pre-song run through,” says Pitch Meeting founder Eric Fortaleza. “We just go for it.”I've been to a few Pitch Meetings, and I count them among the most exciting musical experiences I've ever seen. Not only does the song somehow congeal around the band, but an arrangement seems to spring out of the ground like witched water — horn parts, a guitar solo, a bridge breakdown. I feel like you don't believe me. It's totally crazy. It all happens because of Eric Fortaleza, who has something of a gambler's taste for musical thrills and guts to spare. To me, he represents a new crop of Nashville musician, something different from the guys you see down on broadway, hoping to move their way up the ranks of touring musicians to become what is the gold standard of the Nashville Cat — the A-List studio musician. That's a laudable goal, to be sure, but in its application there's a sense of reticence, a holding something in reserve, because “you never know who's gonna be in the room.” People trying to get discovered may fire their flashiest tricks, but tricks are different from taking chances. Eric is ALL about taking chances. He came to Nashville from Sydney, Australia a couple months before the Pandemic. But he was born in the Phillipines. We talk alot about how being the child of immigrants had something to do with his inveterate hustle. We talk about alot of stuff in this episode. His unlikely but somehow inevitable move to Nashville after ten years on the Australian scene. Why he founded Pitch Meeting, what he likes about it, what's next. At some point in the conversation, the studio door opened to the afternoon glare and in stepped Eric's bandmate Owen Fader, who looks like and sings like a baby faced angel. They played a song together, which shifted the direction of the podcast moving forward. What do you think I mean? The Morse Code with Korby Lenker is a reader-supported publication. For the tenth episode of There Is No Planet Earth Stories, I'm joined by guest Alan Oldham representing stories from Detroit.ALAN OLDHAM has been called “Detroit's Renaissance Man,” equally as known for his art as for his music under the pseudonym DJ T-1000. The Detroit-born polymath, now living and working in Berlin, began his dual careers in the late 80s. First as the host of the “Fast Forward Program” on WDET FM 101.9, Detroit's first-ever radio show devoted exclusively to electronic music, and as a young indie comic artist, writing and drawing his own original creation, “Johnny Gambit” (predating the Marvel character). Oldham was later tapped by his childhood friend, Derrick May, to illustrate the label art for the now-classic records “Nude Photo” and “Beyond The Dance” on his fledgling Transmat label, and Detroit Techno history was made. Oldham was later hired by another childhood friend, Jeff Mills, to do freelance PR for the nascent Underground Resistance collective, writing press releases for the label. When Mills departed for a solo career, UR partner “Mad” Mike Banks tapped AO to replace him as DJ for their Australian Tour of 1992. The codename DJ T-1000 was adopted, and history was made once again. Jumpstart to infamy.Since then, as an international DJ, Oldham has spun all over the planet, as far afield as Tokyo, Manila, The Phillipines, and Shanghai. Summary: Where are rafflesia found? Join Kiersten as she visits Southeast Asia (not literally) to find out. For my hearing impaired listeners, a complete transcript of this podcast follows the show notes on Podbean “Most of the world's largest flowers (genus Rafflesia) are now on the brink of extinction,” by Pastor Malabrigo Jr, Adriane B. Tobias, Joko Witono, Sofi Mursidawati, Agus Susatya, Mat Eunuch Siti-Munirah, Adhityo Wicaksono, Reza Raihandhany, Sarah Edwards, and Chris J. Thorogood. https://doi.org/10.1002/ppp3.10431 Music written and performed by Katherine Camp Transcript (Piano music plays) Kiersten - This is Ten Things I Like About…a ten minute, ten episode podcast about unknown or misunderstood wildlife. (Piano music stops) Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating. This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. The second thing I like about rafflesia is where it is found. This genus of plant has a very small distribution. Let's talk about where you can find these amazing flowers. You probably remember from last week's introductory episode that rafflesia our found in southeast Asia. None have been found outside this region at the recording of this podcast in 2024, although researchers believe that there are more within this region that have yet to be seen and described by science. The majority of rafflesia are found in the Philippines, Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and Peninsular Malaysia. For your reference, Peninsular Malaysia refers to the western portion of Malaysia, or the island portion, and consists of 11 states and two federal territories. Let's take a look and where specific species of rafflesia are found. Before I get started, please excuse any mispronunciation of country names. I mean no offense. Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest species of rafflesia with a spread of three feet in diameter, is found in Malaysia in Borneo and Sarawak. This rafflesia has two varieties, the second variety is Rafflesia arnoldii atjehensis which is found in Indonesia on West Kalimantan and Sumatra. Rafflesia aurantia is fund in the Philippines in Luzon and the Quirino Province. Rafflesia azlanii is found on Peninsular Malaysia in Perak and Pahang. Rafflesia baletei is fund in the Phillipones on Southern Luzon and the Camarines Sur Province. Rafflesia bengkuluensis is found in Indonesia in Souther Sumatra. Rafflesia cantleyi is found in Peninsular Malaysia and on Tioman Island. Rafflesia consueloae, the smallest rafflesia at only 9.7cm in width, is found in the Philippines in Luzon, Nueva Ecija Province. Rafflesia gadutensis is found in Indonesia on the Western coast of Sumatra and Benkulu. Rafflesia hasseltii is found in Indonesia's central Sumatra. Rafflesia keithii can be found in Malaysia's Borneo and Sabah and Indonesia's East Kalimantan. Rafflesia kerrii is found in Peninsular Thailand as well as Peninsular Malaysia. Rafflesia lagascae is found in Luzon in the Philippines. Rafflesia lawangensis can be found in North Sumatra and the Gunung Leuser National Park of Indonesia. Rafflesia leonardii is found in Luzon, Phillipines. Rafflesia lobata can be seen in Panay, Philippines. Rafflesia manillana lives in Samar Philippines. Rafflesia meijeri blooms in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Rafflesia micropylora is also found in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Rafflesia mira and Rafflesia mixta are both found in Mindanao, Philippines. Rafflesia patna is found in Java, Indonesia. Rafflesia philippensis is, you guessed it, found in the Philippines, Luzon Island, Quezon Province, Mt. Banahaw. This flower also goes by R. Banahaw or R. banahawensis in an homage to where it grows. Rafflesia pricei is found in Borneo, Sabah, possibly N. Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan. Rafflesia rochussenii lives in Western Java and Sumatra, Indonesia. Rafflesia schadenbergiana and Rafflesia speciosa are both found in the Philippines in Mindanao and Panay respectively. Rafflesia tengku-adlinii is found in Borneo and Sabah Malaysia. Rafflesia tuan-mudae is also found in Malaysia but in West Sarawak. Rafflesia verrucosa resides in Mindanao, Philippines. Rafflesia zollingeriana is found in eastern Java, Indonesia. The remaining species of rafflesia that we currently know of have incomplete taxonomic identification, so we are not sure if they are all seperate species from the one described above, but they are all found in Indonesia or Peninsular Malaysia. Thanks for hanging in there listeners, I didn't list these all out just so I could say rafflesia a lot, although I have to admit it is fun to say, I want to highlight how many places each specie is found. If you didn't tune it out, you may have noticed that most species are only found in one place. Only five species are found on more than one island. Since most of these flowers are found on islands, the theory of island biogeography applies. This theory, in a nutshell, says that larger islands should host a larger amount of species than smaller islands because larger islands are, well, larger. This holds true for the majority of islands that host rafflesia, but when dealing with nature, there is always an exception to the rule. This is true of rafflesia. The island of Luzon is seven times smaller than Borneo yet both of them host the same amount of rafflesia. Scientists are not sure why yet, but research into this is ongoing. When discussing distribution of this plant, we do have to keep in mind that scientists are still discovering new species or discovering known species in new locations, so our knowledge is continually evolving. Most rafflesias are found in a rainforest habitat on the island where they bloom and that is due to the nature of the host plant upon which they rely. The vines in the genus Tetrastigma seem to be the only vines that host these amazing flowers and they are mostly found in rainforests. Now that we know what rafflesia is and where to find it, next week we will delve into its unusual life cycle. Thank you for listening to episode two of rafflesia. The locations where this incredible flower is found is my second favorite thing about them. If you're enjoying this podcast please recommend me to friends and family and take a moment to give me a rating on whatever platform your listening. It will help me reach more listeners and give the animals I talk about an even better chance at change. So join me next week for another episode about Rafflesia. (Piano Music plays) This has been an episode of Ten Things I like About with Kiersten and Company. Original music written and performed by Katherine Camp, piano extraordinaire.

I sit down with Roxy Thunder, originally from the Phillipines but now residing in Michigan. Roxy is a bodybuilder, personal trainer and a lifestyle coach. Roxy inherited her Lynch Syndrome mutation from her father, who passed away from colon cancer and was diagnosed at 45. Roxy herself developed bleeding, where she discovered PCOS and Endometriosis, all while going through a divorce as well. She also had genetic testing to confirm Lynch Syndrome, and subsequently developed the lifestyle she lives now. Even with family passing away in the Phillipines, so far, none of the family has gotten genetic testing. Roxy credits changing her lifestyle and training for keeping her healthy. In her spare time, Roxy became passionate about politics during Covid and researching, including going down some rabbit holes, as we all have.

We here at Tales From Aztlantis would like to issue the following public service announcement: PLEASE DO NOT rely on social media posts as your sole source of historical and archaeological information. His research covers Mesoamerica, the American Southwest, and the historical connections between the two regions. He is the author of numerous books and has presented lectures at the University of New Mexico, Harvard University, Yale University, San Diego State University, and numerous others.
