Beverly Rage (she/her in drag, he/him out of drag) is the singer, guitarist, and songwriter in Chicago's all-original drag fronted punk rock band Bev Rage & the Drinks. Bev has been a musician for over two decades, nearly half of that fronting BR&TD, and a drag artist for 15 years. As a lifelong queer activist, Bev uses music as a way to empower folks to work outside of the expected to get their message out. This week, Features contributor Ronald Pagan speaks with Bev Rage of Chicago's own queer garage pop band, Bev Rage & the Drinks. They discuss their upcoming full length album, Exes and Hexes, the expansion of their member lineup, the refining of their sound while retaining their sense of humor, queer diversity in the music scene in Chicago, and the importance of showcasing their humor and being a highly visual band in the form of music videos. "Everything I write on this album is either coming from a true place or an exaggerated piece of truth that happened in my real life. I find most of my lyric writing comes from real life things that I've experienced. So everything you hear on this album, it's all real." - Bev Rage Produced by Adalyn Staats. I'm talking with Bev Rage, the singer & guitarist of the queer garage-pop band Bev Rage & The Drinks. I was curious how Bev was born and she tells me how it was a way to combine her love of music and drag and amplify what's she's good at. Amplifying a community through art is something we're both passionate about. I was intrigued to learn that one of her first shows as a band was opening for some of her queer heroes and how that relationship evolved as they became contemporaries. One of Bev's other passions is the environment. She talks about how being a kid in the country sparked an appreciation for the natural world and even influenced what she studied in college. Bev shares how for her gardening is not just to have a great way to fresh food a few steps out her door, but is also a meditative practice of caring for the plants.

Episode 31 sees me in a conversation with the inimitable Bev Rage of the Chicago Queercore punk band 'Bev Rage and the Drinks' Bev (sometimes Beverley/Josh)is the lead singer and punk drag creation. We chat about her origins playing in bands in Cleveland, Ohio and how her/his desire to bring queerness to punk music and to steer away from the 'four white guys in a van' scenario began. Bev tells us the origins of 'Beverley' and how she met fellow bandmate Aaron on the streets of Chicago whilst he was selling ice cream and Bev was selling plasma! We discuss the importance of drag on popular culture and Bev's connections with the Chicago drag scene. From their first gig supporting Pansy Division to the release of their current brilliant EP 'Honk If Yer Hungry' - (on iTunes and Bandcamp,Spotify etc )it's a whirlwind ride and not one for the fainthearted.
