My guest this week is Sierra Hull.Sierra has been a guest on the podcast twice before and both times we chatted about an ongoing project she's been working on since her last record 25 Trips. That project eventually became her new album, the wonderful A Tiptoe High Wire, which we talk about in this episode.Recorded over four sets of sessions over a two year period, the album features Sierra's current touring band, as well as including guest appearances from Béla Fleck, Tim O'Brien, Ronnie Bowman, Lindsay Lou, Aoife O'Donovan and Sierra's husband Justin Moses. We talk about the process of writing the songs, some of which were written with these specific musicians in mind; the themes and inspiration behind the tracks; Sierra's desire to write more optimistic and hopeful songs; her decision to put the record out independently and how the album, co-produced by Sierra's friend Shani Gandhi, feels like one piece, despite being split over several different sessions. It's a fantastic record and, as always, it was a real treat getting to chat with Sierra. For info on where you can buy A Tiptoe High Wire and a full list of Sierra's upcoming tour dates, check out sierrahull.comHappy picking,MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! Ceri interviews internationally acclaimed artist Catherine Yass, whose groundbreaking lens-based work pushes the boundaries of photography and film. The conversation explores her innovative techniques, including her distinctive method of layering negatives and positives, her relationship with architectural spaces, and her thoughts on time, failure, and resistance in art. This episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a Turner Prize nominee who continues to challenge conventional perspectives in contemporary art. KEY TAKEAWAYS Catherine discovered her signature blue colour through mistakes while learning to use a 5x4 camera, leading her to deliberately overlay negative and positive images to challenge the idea that photographs must represent reality exactly as we see it. Her early experiences cycling around a deteriorating swimming pool in Tower Hamlets while watching Canary Wharf being built shaped her understanding of architectural power dynamics and social inequality in London. Catherine views her deliberately slow working process with cumbersome equipment as a form of resistance, noting how the industrial revolution transformed time into a commodity that must be used efficiently. For the NHS Swimmers, she asked healthcare workers to perform the same swimming movements twice, creating a temporal doubling that she felt was crucial to avoid the work looking like an advertisement in a public space. Through her High Wire project, Catherine came to value the importance of failure when the performer couldn't complete the walk, realising that sometimes dreams are more valuable than their achievement. Having started by photographing rhinoceros at the zoo, Catherine's fascination with weight, structure and gravity has remained consistent throughout her career, from early sculpture to recent film works. She maintains her artistic freedom by teaching just enough to fund her studio, allowing her to pursue projects without complete dependence on art sales, which she's found can fluctuate dramatically. Her transition from making physical interventions in architecture to photographing spaces emerged from the practical reality that installations are temporary, leading her to document them with photography which then became its own form. BEST MOMENTS "The camera is very big player in it... It's quite like a third character in the room with you before you even start making." "I think through teaching you keep reading... there's a whole process of discussion and learning going on all the time, which is really rich." "Freedom isn't freedom if it treads on somebody else's freedom. So you have to protect people's freedoms." "I was interested in the idea of the subject not being whole, not being sort of complete or reliable or steady." "Slowing things down can be quite a resistance... working with that big camera makes you work in a very organised way." Construction safety is a top issue that necessitates a shift in thinking and approach to properly manage hazards and safeguard workers. Traditional safety indicators, such as the recordable incident rate, have been widely used, but they only reveal part of the story. To effectively enhance safety results, contractors must look beyond this data and focus on detecting and mitigating high-risk exposures that could result in significant injuries or fatalities. Meet David Tibbetts, Chief Safety Officer at Highwire. A certified safety professional with more than 20 years of occupational safety experience in both general industry and construction settings. He assists hiring partners at High Wire in identifying, managing, and reducing risks posed by contracting partners on building projects and in already-existing operational facilities by using their portfolio of software solutions. He joined us today to talk about the importance of a proactive safety culture, beyond mere compliance, focusing on both leading and lagging indicators. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS [01.05] How safety became David's passion. [02.05] Building better relationships with owners. [03.33] The importance of building a strong safety culture. [05.27] The importance of a robust inspection program. [06.38] Building a powerful inspection structure. [08.11] The balance between recognizing good performance and addressing safety concerns. [11.07] Mitigating garbage data. [15.19] Understanding prequalification. [21.11] The value of having practical experience in both the general contractor and owner sides of construction. [22.06] The role of technology in facilitating different aspects of construction delivery. [24.09] The importance of looking beyond traditional safety metrics. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you're working with an involved owner, take advantage of that opportunity to foster a collaborative environment. Don't overlook the need for strong leadership and management systems that enable the execution of safety programs. Implement a robust inspection program and track the data consistently. Ensure your inspection program is seen as a tool for growth and improvement, not just as a way to point out mistakes. When reviewing inspection data, look for patterns that suggest your program might be missing unsafe behaviors or high-risk activities. Approach prequalification with a mindset of collaboration rather than elimination. Jimmy Red Corn And We Should All Care! In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I welcome Scott Blackwell, co-founder of High Wire Distilling in Charleston, South Carolina. The conversation dives into Scott's diverse entrepreneurial background, which spans restaurants, coffee, and packaged foods, before transitioning into the spirits industry. Scott shares how his passion for flavor and culture led him to distilling, despite initially having little interest in spirits due to South Carolina's restrictive mini bottle laws. He emphasizes the importance of agriculture in crafting unique flavors, which ultimately shaped High Wire's identity. The discussion then shifts to the distillery's signature grain, Jimmy Red corn, which has become synonymous with High Wire's brand. Scott recounts the journey of discovering Jimmy Red, a variety known for its rich flavor profile and historical significance as a moonshiner's corn. He explains how their initial experiments with heirloom white corn didn't yield the desired results, prompting a search for a more flavorful alternative. With the guidance of heirloom grain expert Glenn Roberts and Johnny Appleseed of American Distilling Dave Pickerell, Scott and his team found that Jimmy Red not only provided a unique taste but also contributed to a distinctive oil cap during fermentation, enhancing the overall flavor of their whiskey. As the episode wraps up, Scott reflects on the challenges and rewards of crafting spirits that tell a story rooted in their local agriculture and culinary heritage. He discusses the potential for releasing a white whiskey made from Jimmy Red, highlighting the growing interest in showcasing the unique characteristics of this heirloom corn. The conversation underscores the importance of authenticity and quality in the craft spirits industry, as High Wire Distilling continues to carve out its niche in the competitive whiskey landscape. My First Visit to South Carolina - And It Was Gold Have you had any whiskey from South Carolina? No? Me neith...wait, yes, yes I have! Well, that's a bit facetious - by the time this comes out, I will have tried High Wire's Jimmy Red, too, but let's say the Carolinas weren't on my shelf before these bottles showed up to try. In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, we venture into uncharted territory as we explore the low country of South Carolina. My guest is Chris Crowe, the President of Burnt Church Distillery, located in Bluffton, South Carolina, near Hilton Head. Chris shares the fascinating story behind the distillery, its unique location, and the rich history and culture that influence their craft. The story of Burnt Church Distillery has nothing to do with a church burning (seriously, they've looked into it), but it's fair to say there's plenty of smoke and a fire to pay attention to. Burnt Church tells the stories of its town - Bluffton - and the people whose stories emanate from its own. Anita Pollitzer, George Palmer, and the eponymous Bluffton Whiskey, all embody a distillery that has already found its voice and one to watch. They got their distilling start at Jeptha Creed, but soon they'll be fully transitioned to all in-house distillate (it was still their recipes and such, just contracted there). I think the whiskies right now are solid, but with a very high ceiling and room to grow. They've got some big names to live up to, and soon enough I think they will. In the meantime, try some Carolina Gold Rice whiskey - seriously, new flavor profile for me, and damn delicious. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Chris for entering the Whiskey Ring! There they delivered more than 400,000 signed petitions demanding harmful food dyes and the chemical preservative BHT be removed from their cereals in the US, like it is internationally. The cereal giant's refusal to meet with petitioners has resulted in a countrywide call to cancel Kellogg's.
