"We are experiencing what some people call sort of a shutdown of the public square in the United States and around the world," says veteran environmental activist André Carothers. Along with the former executive director of Greenpeace US, Annie Leonard, the two have co-authored a new book about the history of protest, why it works, and why it's under attack. Protest: Respect It. Defend It. Use It. was written to "remind readers about the role protests played in gaining a lot of the progress that we take for granted today," Leonard says. Earth Day 1970 famously saw around 10% of the U.S. population actively participating in one of the largest demonstrations in the nation's history. This led to a number of landmark environmental laws that are arguably taken for granted today. Protest highlights how movements begin, and ultimately shape public discourse leading to these significant victories. The authors also highlight how some in society often lionize protest movements of the past, while condemning ones of the present, forgetting that at their inception, protests and the movements they represent are often unpopular. Leonard and Carothers point to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose approval rating never went above 50% in all his years as a civil rights leader. His disapproval rating stood at 75% the year he was assassinated. "There's something about the gymnastics of history that allows us to honor these people well after they're dead, but not when it's happening right in front of them," Carothers says. Across seventeen separate kitchens and living rooms, the same patterns surface. Children who cannot describe their own symptoms have aggressive behaviors read as "just autism" instead of as pain, neuroinflammation, catatonia, or seizure activity. Inside these families, profound autism arrives with company: Whitney on tuberous sclerosis complex, Lydia on type 1 diabetes, Heather on SYNGAP1-related disorder, Jillian on PANS/PANDAS, Erica C. on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Elena on Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and tonic-clonic seizures, Michelle on gastrointestinal disease. Whitney and Christine describe catatonia severe enough to require electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a treatment most listeners have never been told is part of profound autism care. The same response keeps coming back from too many clinicians, a psych med and a restraint order in place of a workup. Diagnostic overshadowing has a body count, and these mothers can name it.Three other themes repeat. Trust yourself; you know your child best. Fierce love is a clinical skill. When the system has no service that fits your child, you build one. Mothers in this episode fight schools and therapy centers after their children are harmed or their rights are trampled. Model and entrepreneur Kenza Fourati discusses her origins, growing up 1990s in Tunisia to becoming a trailblazing figure in the international fashion industry. She reflects on how she initially viewed beauty through a French lens and the subsequent realization of how limiting that perspective was to the beauty of her immediate surroundings. The conversation delves into her brand, Osay (Our Stories Are Yours), which seeks to challenge the traditional fashion hierarchy by making Tunisian artisans the central designers and protagonists of their own craft. Through Osay, Fourati emphasizes the importance of supply chain accountability and human connection, moving away from a model of nameless, faceless hands toward one that celebrates the ingenuity and heritage of the Global South. 0:00 Introduction 2:06 Reclaiming Arab Aesthetics 3:01 Growing Up in Tunisia and Early Notions of Beauty 5:42 Navigating the Modeling Industry 7:52 Lack of Arab Role Models in Global Fashion 9:18 Choosing Creative Freedom 11:04 Finding Power in a Discardable Industry 12:59 Osay: Elevating Tunisian Artisans 14:16 Challenging the Fashion Supply Chain 16:06 Reversing the Design Hierarchy: Artisans as Protagonists 18:05 Modeling as a Blank Canvas vs. Projecting a Story 19:57 A Love Letter to Tunisian Heritage 23:14 Reflections on the Sports Illustrated Milestone 25:52 Amplifying the Tunisian Revolution 27:21 Stereotypes and the Western Gaze 30:23 Finding Your Tribe 35:08 Local Critique and Patriotism 38:06 The Influence of Producer Dora Bouchoucha and Life on Film Sets 42:10 Creative Production in Hollywood and the Middle East 43:24 The Shift Toward Individualism 46:30 Celebrating Tunisian Brands 49:08 Remembering Master Artisan Mansour and the Preservation of Craft Kenza Fourati is a Tunisian model and entrepreneur whose career is defined by a commitment to bridging global fashion with authentic cultural heritage. Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's special episode, Brian and Jason are joined by Eric Corliss and Jennifer Coleman from The Directions Group to discuss their approach to AI, the transition to an integrated intelligence approach, and the launch of their new AI-powered platform, Linara. Kicking off the episode, Jennifer introduces integrated intelligence as a way to move beyond traditional research silos. By connecting data across sources and methods, this approach helps you better understand business challenges and future opportunities. The goal is not just to answer questions, but to identify the broader problems those questions represent. The conversation then turns to the shifting demands of the insights industry. As clients face more complex and fast-moving environments, the need for forward-looking, connected insights has grown. Eric and Jennifer explain how their integrated intelligence strategy is designed to meet these needs by combining human expertise with evolving technologies. Eric expands on how technology supports this strategy, particularly AI's role. He emphasizes that the goal is not to replace human expertise, but to enhance it. By automating lower-value tasks and streamlining workflows, AI enables researchers to focus more on critical thinking and problem-solving, while still maintaining oversight and rigor. Linara represents a key step in this evolution. The platform is designed to extend the life and usefulness of research by transforming it into an interactive resource. Instead of relying on static reports that quickly become outdated, clients can engage with their data in real time to generate insights that are both relevant and actionable. In the final segment, the group discusses the future of AI in insights, including the need for continuous data inputs, human oversight, and ongoing collaboration with clients. As the industry continues to evolve, the focus remains on using technology to amplify, not replace, human intelligence. How can we better incorporate prophetic messages in our lives, while also using them to bless the lives of those we love? In this episode, Scott C. Esplin, dean of Religious Education at BYU, discusses his article "Department and Individual Efforts to Amplify Prophetic Messages," coauthored with Brad Streeter, Rory Bigelow, Aaron Shumway, and David Peck. Drawing on a panel presentation from the 2024 Church Educational System Religious Educators Conference, Dean Esplin explores how religious educators can more faithfully emphasize and transmit the teachings of living prophets. Responding to counsel from Elder Clark G. Gilbert, the panel framed gospel teaching through the metaphor of an amplifier, namely prophetic messages serve as the input, educators function as the amplifier, and students receive the output. Further, Dean Esplin explains that prophets teach with clarity, repetition, and inspired emphasis, centering their messages on Jesus Christ, covenant belonging, and revealed priorities for our time. Ultimately, gospel teachers succeed when they faithfully proclaim the Lord's words and invite learners, through the Spirit, to hear and act. Today I am honored to speak with veteran journalist Victoria Law. She is the author of such books as Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women, Prison By Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reforms (co-authored with Maya Schenwar), and “Prisons Make Us Safer” and 20 Other Myths about Mass Incarceration. Today we talk about her new book, Corridors of Contagion: How the Pandemic Exposed the Cruelties of Incarceration. In this devastating study, Law shows how instead of focusing on care during the outbreak of COVID, prisons took the pandemic as an opportunity to amplify their inhumanity: we learn how things like solitary confinement and strip searches only intensified their worse aspects, and how extractive communications systems preyed on those hungry for news from loved ones. Law also tells of the personal stories she was able to track that give a human dimension to the statistics of the pandemic, and also remarkable stories of self-sacrifice and solidarity, as prisoners gave each other the care and support so badly needed. We end by learning about organizations that are at the forefront of fighting for decarceration and restructuring of parole boards, and other actions to fight against the inhumane and cruel practices of the prison industrial complex. Victoria Law is a freelance journalist and author who has written about incarceration, particularly women's incarceration, for nearly two decades. Her books include Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women, Prison By Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reforms (co-authored with Maya Schenwar), and “Prisons Make Us Safer” and 20 Other Myths about Mass Incarceration. Today we have two guests from two different companies who have one shared conviction: AI works best when it amplifies people, not replaces them. Today we're joined by Rachana Rele, VP of Product Design for AI-native products at Adobe, and David Shim, co-founder and CEO of Read AI. Together, they're building very different products — but they share a vision of AI that removes the drudgery from creative work and makes room for the thinking that actually matters. In this conversation, we dig into some ideas that could genuinely change how you think about your work. David talks about this concept of “storage of intelligence” — the idea that your knowledge, your meeting history, your working style could all be captured and made available as a kind of digital twin that keeps working even when you're not in the room. And Rachana shares how Adobe is thinking about AI not as a one-shot creative output machine, but as a collaborative partner that helps teams break out of their own blind spots. We also push them on the harder questions — the job anxiety that's real right now in tech, the surveillance concerns that come with recording your work life, and where they each personally draw the line. Bios David Shim is Co-Founder and CEO of Read AI, an AI productivity platform focused on helping knowledge workers leverage the power of AI to improve how they collaborate, communicate, and get work done. The platform provides meeting insights, search, chat, and proactive recommendations for millions of professionals, integrating seamlessly with the tools teams already use. Read AI is pioneering the concept of the Digital Twin—AI that serves as a true extension of you, built on deep contextual understanding of how you work. Today, Read AI is trusted by teams at 90% of the Fortune 500 and in the past year, was recognized as a Top 10 AI Vendor for Enterprises by Brex, a Top 50 AI App by a16z and Mercury, and named one of Inc.'s Top 16 Companies to Watch Before founding Read AI, David served as CEO of Foursquare and previously founded Placed, which was acquired by Snap in 2017. In 2025, he was named CEO of the Year by Geekwire. Rachana Rele Rachana has spent 20+ years at the intersection of technology and human experience — figuring out not just what to build, but why it matters. At Adobe, she shapes the direction of new products, nurtures ideas from zero to something real, and helps early-stage businesses find their footing and grow. She's also a perpetual student — currently finishing an MBA at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, with an M.Eng. in HCI from Clemson and a B.E. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Mumbai.

Noise is default. Radiation surrounds us like a memory of the Big Bang. And leaks into every microphone...In this episode, we break down what noise actually is. The painful (and beautiful) interference from power lines and radio waves, and the limits it places on every signal we try to capture. We talk through white, pink, brown, and blue noise, and why some feel harsh while others put us to sleep. Then we dive into noise floors, dynamic range, gain staging, and why every piece of gear has its own signature. And why engineers sometimes add noise on purpose! At the edge, noise becomes something deeper: it limits how much information can exist in a system. Even the universe has a background signal. This episode is about where signal ends and everything else begins. For 30% off your first year with DistroKid to share your music with the world click DistroKid.com/vip/lovemusicmore

A Parenting Resource for Children’s Behavior and Mental Health
Wondering why your child struggles with focus, mood, or emotional outbursts? Could a gene be amplifying ADHD, anxiety, and dysregulation, increasing stress sensitivity? Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, creator of Regulation First Parenting™, shows parents how to decode behavior and calm the brain effectively. If you've tried everything and your child still melts down, struggles to focus, or seems stuck in fight-or-flight, you're not failing. You're not alone. In this episode, I dive into how a gene could be amplifying ADHD, anxiety, and dysregulation and, most importantly, what you can do to calm the brain and create real change. Why does my child seem more reactive than other kids, even with good parenting? When a child's nervous system is already under pressure, genetic factors can lower their stress tolerance. Genes like MTHFR don't cause attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, or emotional dysregulation—but they can amplify vulnerability when combined with chronic stress, genetic and environmental influences, and other risk factors. This matters because research shows ADHD and related psychiatric disorders have a complex genetic architecture involving multiple genes, gene–environment interactions, and socioeconomic factors.Key takeaways:Genes involved can affect detoxification, inflammation, and neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotoninStress exposure fills the “stress cup” fasterBehavior is communication—not a character flawReal-Life Example: Two kids have the same school day. One recovers quickly. The other melts down for hours. Same environment—different genetic susceptibility, highlighting how genetic and environmental influences shape responses to everyday stress.Could MTHFR really impact ADHD symptoms, anxiety, or emotional regulation?Yes—but not in the scary way social media makes it sound. MTHFR is one of many genetic variations affecting methylation, the process that helps the body clear stress hormones and inflammatory byproducts. When methylation is sluggish, the sympathetic nervous system stays activated longer, making recovery from stress more difficult.Findings suggest kids with ADHD symptom dimensions, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety disorders, or major depressive disorder may struggle more with recovery after stress—especially when genetic and socioeconomic interplay, genetic and environmental influences, and other environmental risk factors pile up.What parents often notice:Heightened anxiety & emotional volatilitySlower recovery after meltdownsSensitivity to medications or supplementsThis doesn't change the ADHD diagnosis—but it helps explain why regulation takes more effort in some children, even with supportive parenting and structured routines. If you're tired of walking on eggshells or feeling like nothing works…Get the FREE Regulation Rescue Kit and finally learn what to say and do in

What if a simple posture adjustment or a moment of focused listening could transform your patient encounters, making them more efficient and empathetic? In this episode of the Succeed In Medicine Podcast, Dr. Bradley Block speaks with Dr. Nick Morgan, drawing from his work coaching Fortune 50 CEOs and TED speakers, Dr. Morgan breaks down how physicians can project authority and empathy right from the first moment in the exam room. He explains the "outside-in" and "inside-out" approaches to charisma: aligning your posture for confidence and clearing mental distractions to give undivided attention. The discussion covers reading patient cues, like open vs. closed postures to gauge understanding or discomfort, mirroring body language to build rapport during tough conversations, and respecting personal space (1.5–4 feet) for meaningful exchanges. Dr. Morgan also introduces "charismatic listening," where stilling your entire body signals genuine presence, fostering trust in seconds. Whether delivering bad news or handling hostile patients, these tools help doctors communicate more effectively, reducing visit times while improving outcomes.Three Actionable TakeawaysMaster Posture for Authority: Before entering the room, align your body against a wall or take a deep breath to stand at full height. This conveys confidence without arrogance and sets a professional tone.Clear Your Mental To-Do List: Pause for 30 seconds to erase distractions, using a personal ritual (like a head twitch or imaginary gesture) to focus solely on the patient, ensuring undivided attention that builds trust instantly.Practice Charismatic Listening: During key moments, face the patient fully, still your body, and maintain open posture to listen with your "whole body". This signals empathy and receptivity, especially in emotional or critical exchanges.About the Show:Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. One of the standout films from the 2026 batch of Flickerfest shorts has been Damien Power's docu-drama Return of the Champ. With this excellent hybrid experience, the stand up comedian turned director spins the cameras on his relationship with his brother, Will Power, a world champion and Indy 500 winner, who spins a story about a crash that he once witnessed. It's a story that Damien hadn't heard before, and within Return of the Champ he utilises that story to explore sibling rivalry, masculinity, and what it means to be vulnerable or open with one another. If I'm painting the film to be a deep experience, the rest assured, it definitely is. What Damien has crafted here is something that will stick with me for quite a while, with the resulting film creating a fascinating and memorable nexus points of the quiet space of ocker comedy, reserved masculinity, loud cars, laughter at stand up comedy gigs, and frustration about fathers. There's a lot going on under the hood of this flick, with the film simmering along at a neat 18-minutes and creating a lasting impact. Amplifying the vibe of the film is cinematography by Julian Panetta which is both immersive and observational in tone, pulling viewers into the Power's brothers world. Equally amplifying the tone is the score by Adrian Diery which adds a rather chill and contemplative backdrop to the whole experience. Return of the Champ is the first film by Damien Power, and if this is the style of film we might get from him, then I'm looking forward to seeing where his filmography takes us.This interview was recorded ahead of the films world premiere at Flickerfest 2026. Join us on January 21, 2026, in San Francisco for a fact-based exploration of immigration and the future of the United States. Moderated by the Population Reference Bureau's Jennifer Sciubba, this conversation will cut through opinion and politics to reveal the real data shaping America's demographics, economy, and competitiveness. Hear from leading experts Dr. Giovanni Peri, Daniel Costa, and Dr. Russell Hancock on what's working—and what needs fixing—in U.S. immigration policy. Gain clear insights into how these forces will shape our businesses and communities for years to come. This core learning event offers an intentionally apolitical and fact-based perspective on a politically, emotionally and culturally charged topic. Credible, fact-based information on immigration can be hard to discern from opinion and rhetoric. Amplifying the stakes for the United States, at a time of intense rivalry for leadership of large global industries of the future, the full scope and impact of federal policy actions is unknowable. Some are immediate, obvious and reported in mass media. Others will take years to be known, understood and reported. All businesses, communities and individuals will be affected. “There's this massive imbalance between the employer side of the recruiting equation where they've got all the tech, they've got all the weapons… Candidates don't have anything.”–Doug BergIn this episode, I'm joined by Doug Berg, head matcher and big kahuna at Match2, a longtime builder and operator in the talent technology/recruitment space and the only guy I know that wears flip flops to HR Tech..Doug has lived and hacked nearly every iteration of online hiring — from fax machines and early internet job fairs to today's AI-powered recruiting chaos.Doug and I have lived parallel lives in some sense. We have both been on the scene as recruitment went on-line and have continued to wage war against the barriers that are blocking successful hiring. But Doug's unique experience building recruiting focused tech helps us take a very well rounded perspective.Doug and I trace the psychology of hiring systems, why most recruiting technology still fails both candidates and employers, and how efficiency-driven design has quietly stripped humanity out of the process. We talk about what broke, why AI is making some problems worse before it makes them better, and what a candidate-centered future could actually look like if we stop designing hiring like a transactional funnel and start designing it like a relationship.Topics Discussed & Key Insights1. Hiring Has Always Been Psychological — Ignoring That Is Why It BreaksDoug shares early recruiting stories that reveal a core truth: people don't make job decisions based solely on skills or titles. They're driven by values, aspirations, lifestyle preferences, and identity. Yet most hiring systems still treat people as static records instead of dynamic humans.Music to the ears of a psychologist like me!2. Applicant Tracking Systems Were Built for Control, Not for CandidatesWe unpack how applicant tracking systems were designed for compliance and efficiency — not engagement. The result:* One-way transactions* Forced applications* Zero room for curiosity, context, or conversationDoug explains why this original design choice still haunts modern hiring.3. AI Isn't Breaking Hiring — It is Amplifying the Broken PartsAI didn't invent hiring dysfunction — it amplified it. Candidates now apply to dozens of jobs at once using bots. Employers respond with more screening, more filters, more automation. The outcome? More noise. Less signal. Worse experiences on both sides.4. Real Hiring Happens Through Interaction, Not “Efficiency”Doug tells stories about simple interventions — like proactive chat on career sites — that led to real hires for impossible-to-fill roles. The lesson is clear: when candidates are allowed to participate instead of comply, hiring actually works.5. Hiring Will Stay Broken Until Candidates Control Their Side of the SystemOne of the central ideas in the episode: candidates have never been given real agency. Doug explains the structural imbalance:* Companies control the systems* Candidates adapt or disappearWe explore what changes when candidates control their own data, preferences, and relationships — and why that shift matters.6. The Resume Is a Dead Artifact — Identity Needs to Be PortableResumes are outdated snapshots. Doug makes the case for living profiles, portable personalization, and persistent relationships that move with the candidate across employers.AI finally makes this possible — not by enforcing rigid taxonomies, but by interpreting relevance across skills, experience, and context.7. The Future of Hiring Should Feel Like Reconnection, Not RejectionWe close by zooming out. Doug shares a simple but radical vision: if someone gets laid off on Friday, they shouldn't start from zero. They should already know:* Who wants them* What they're worth* Where they fitHiring shouldn't feel like rejection roulette. It should feel like an intelligent market reconnecting human supply and demand.Final TakeawayHiring doesn't fail because people are hard to assess. It fails because we designed systems that ignore how people actually choose, trust, and engage.AI won't fix that on its own.But used thoughtfully — with psychology, agency, and dignity baked in — it might finally help us build hiring systems that work for humans again.
