Dan Weissmann is a reporter. He’s the host and creator of An Arm and a Leg, a podcast about why health care costs so freaking much, and what we can maybe do about it. Because Dan likes a challenge, the job he’s chosen with An Arm and a Leg is to take one of the most enraging, terrifying, depressing parts of American life — and create a show that’s entertaining, empowering, and useful. Before starting An Arm and a Leg in 2018, Dan was a staff reporter at WBEZ and Marketplace. His stories have appeared on shows like Reveal, 99 Percent Invisible, and Planet Money. Most Monday nights, Dan can be found practicing with the Blue Ribbon Glee Club, singing the punk rock canon. If that sounds like something you might dig, it abso-fucking-lutely is. And if it sounds like something you might enjoy being part of, definitely hit Dan up after the show. Master Brewer Hagen Dost delves into Dovetail Brewery's traditional brewing techniques, from open fermentation to coolships. Hagen starts by sharing his journey of getting into brewing, with an emphasis on his German heritage growing up and the sensory class that helped him develop skills that he feels would benefit any brewer. He then explains how he became a Certified Master Brewer and discusses traditional European brewing methods, including decoction and the use of a coolship. Plus: the art of identifying fermentation flaws, the science behind crafting classic European beer styles, the significance of the German beer purity law, and the shelf life you can typically expect from beer you buy at your local craft brewery. After the beer break, Haagen discusses their Wet-Hopped Hopfenlager, a lager brewed with freshly picked hops from Michigan, characterized by subtle hop flavors and a lack of bitterness. He also explains what a coolship does and why it's so rare, why some brewers prefer to serve full pours over flights, and the history of the lauter grant faucets behind Dovetail's bar. Plus: what piece of equipment is Dovetail actively using that used to belong to the oldest brewery in the world (and how did they acquire it)? How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery

In the span of a decade, Michigan saw a major craft beer boom, going from around 100 craft breweries to upwards of 400.  In the middle of that marketplace Kevin DeGrood opened Michigan's North Center Brewing way back in 2015. He watched a fairly virgin market become deflowered with nearly 30 breweries just during the time he was finalizing his business plan.  His start up was methodical, specific and, by many accounts, the right way to do it. Unfortunately through a mix of employment issues, changing customer tastes and a near-impossible distribution market, his brewery finally closed a few months ago on St Patty's Day.  Kevin's story highlights how the right brewery can still end up on the wrong end of a P&L. He's smart, passionate and, thankfully, open to sharing his story so that we can all learn from him How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/damnbrewery/support

Actor and Vocalist Andrew Sa has earned the title of Chicago's premiere queer country crooner. Sa's career has always been rooted in songwriting that highlights his easy and elegant voice, but when he met mentor and pioneer Patrick Hagerty of Lavender Country, “Lonesome Andrew” was born. Diving headfirst into the catalogs of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and other classic songwriters that defined his childhood, Sa easily slipped into this new but familiar persona. It wasn't long before all of Chicago was seeking out his voice. Sa quickly became the star of The Cosmic Country Showcase, an instant smash hit camp-country revue based out of the Hideout, a bar that has fostered many golden voices for decades. One of those legendary voices, Kelly Hogan (Mavis Staples, Neko Case), instantly recognized Sa's abilities and quickly the two were booking gigs across the city as a duo. The young and talented Liam Kazar (Tweedy, Marrow) also recruited Sa for a duet on his debut album Due North. Sa also created a stunning film, Andrew in Anotherland, which was a celebration of Chicago's many voices that accompanied a live revue at the prestigious public amphitheater Millennium Park. Audiences and fellow artists alike reveled in Sa's intra-generational appeal that, while timeless, is rooted in a definitively young, queer perspective. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Daniel Poppen, member of the union organizing committee at the Trader Joe's location in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, to discuss the staff's decision to file for a union election. Then, he speaks with Matt Bruenig, founder of the People's Policy Project, author of the NLRB Edge newsletter, and co-host of “The Bruenigs” podcast, to discuss his recent NLRB filing against Steven Crowder. First, Sam reacts to State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller refusing to answer the Associated Press's Matt Lee's question about why they've been unable to verify whether Israel struck an Iranian diplomatic target in Syria. Then, Sam's joined by Dan Poppen as they take us through the steps that led the Trader Joe's North Center location in Chicago to vote for a union election. Dan discusses some of the issues that have been facing Trader Joe's workers, the inspiration they've received from other unionizing Trader Joe's locations around the country, and what they can anticipate going forward after the vote totals are finalized. Then, Sam is joined by Matt Bruenig to discuss his representation of Jared Monroe, AKA "Not Gay Jared", the former "Louder With Crowder" employee, who has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Steven Crowder and the company. Bruenig outlines the main pillars that constitute the NLRB complaint, and provides some context to Jared's experience while working for Steven Crowder, what that entailed, and what they're hoping to achieve as the complaint is arbitrated and decided upon. And in the Fun Half, Sam reacts to Google employees demonstrating and conducting sit-ins against Google's work with Israel in their New York and California offices. He and Matt then check in on Speaker Johnson's tightrope walk, attempting to pass a supplemental foreign aid bill, which his far-right faction doesn't want. Johnson, who's now referring to him as a "wartime Speaker", is losing soldiers as an outline has been revealed, with Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry complaining that there's no border funding in the legislation (it was in another bill that Perry and his cohort didn't support). On the other end, former Kevin McCarthy confidant Rep. Garret Graves asks the all-important question: "What are Republicans getting" from this supplemental? And now, Speaker Johnson is only being offered tepid support from former President Trump, who is now willing to wait and see what happens to him with the motion to vacate looming over his head. Sam and Matt then turn to Trump's hush money trial, with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba telling Fox's Martha McCallum that Trump will be regarded like *wait for it* Nelson Mandela if he were to be put in jail for violating his gag order. Sam covers the recent Politico scoop of comedian Rob Schneider tanking a performance in front of Senate Republicans and their staffers, before diving into Trump's recent rally this weekend where he heard chants of "Genocide Joe!", to which he responded in part by saying: "You're not wrong". And, finally, Sam and Matt step into Dave Rubin's corner, where Rubin discusses his concerns about his inability to "arbitrage" the divide between the left and the right. Then, they check in on Dave's conversation with Will Cain from last week, where Dave tries his absolute hardest to take shots at Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while *trying his absolute hardest* not to actually take shots at Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens.
