Dan Weissmann is a reporter. He’s the host and creator of An Arm and a Leg, a podcast about why health care costs so freaking much, and what we can maybe do about it. Because Dan likes a challenge, the job he’s chosen with An Arm and a Leg is to take one of the most enraging, terrifying, depressing parts of American life — and create a show that’s entertaining, empowering, and useful. Before starting An Arm and a Leg in 2018, Dan was a staff reporter at WBEZ and Marketplace. His stories have appeared on shows like Reveal, 99 Percent Invisible, and Planet Money. Most Monday nights, Dan can be found practicing with the Blue Ribbon Glee Club, singing the punk rock canon. If that sounds like something you might dig, it abso-fucking-lutely is. And if it sounds like something you might enjoy being part of, definitely hit Dan up after the show. Master Brewer Hagen Dost delves into Dovetail Brewery's traditional brewing techniques, from open fermentation to coolships. Hagen starts by sharing his journey of getting into brewing, with an emphasis on his German heritage growing up and the sensory class that helped him develop skills that he feels would benefit any brewer. He then explains how he became a Certified Master Brewer and discusses traditional European brewing methods, including decoction and the use of a coolship. Plus: the art of identifying fermentation flaws, the science behind crafting classic European beer styles, the significance of the German beer purity law, and the shelf life you can typically expect from beer you buy at your local craft brewery. After the beer break, Haagen discusses their Wet-Hopped Hopfenlager, a lager brewed with freshly picked hops from Michigan, characterized by subtle hop flavors and a lack of bitterness. He also explains what a coolship does and why it's so rare, why some brewers prefer to serve full pours over flights, and the history of the lauter grant faucets behind Dovetail's bar. Plus: what piece of equipment is Dovetail actively using that used to belong to the oldest brewery in the world (and how did they acquire it)? In the span of a decade, Michigan saw a major craft beer boom, going from around 100 craft breweries to upwards of 400.  In the middle of that marketplace Kevin DeGrood opened Michigan's North Center Brewing way back in 2015. He watched a fairly virgin market become deflowered with nearly 30 breweries just during the time he was finalizing his business plan.  His start up was methodical, specific and, by many accounts, the right way to do it. Unfortunately through a mix of employment issues, changing customer tastes and a near-impossible distribution market, his brewery finally closed a few months ago on St Patty's Day.  Kevin's story highlights how the right brewery can still end up on the wrong end of a P&L. He's smart, passionate and, thankfully, open to sharing his story so that we can all learn from him How NOT To Start A Damn Brewery.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/damnbrewery/support

Actor and Vocalist Andrew Sa has earned the title of Chicago's premiere queer country crooner. Sa's career has always been rooted in songwriting that highlights his easy and elegant voice, but when he met mentor and pioneer Patrick Hagerty of Lavender Country, “Lonesome Andrew” was born. Diving headfirst into the catalogs of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, and other classic songwriters that defined his childhood, Sa easily slipped into this new but familiar persona. It wasn't long before all of Chicago was seeking out his voice. Sa quickly became the star of The Cosmic Country Showcase, an instant smash hit camp-country revue based out of the Hideout, a bar that has fostered many golden voices for decades. One of those legendary voices, Kelly Hogan (Mavis Staples, Neko Case), instantly recognized Sa's abilities and quickly the two were booking gigs across the city as a duo. The young and talented Liam Kazar (Tweedy, Marrow) also recruited Sa for a duet on his debut album Due North. Sa also created a stunning film, Andrew in Anotherland, which was a celebration of Chicago's many voices that accompanied a live revue at the prestigious public amphitheater Millennium Park. Audiences and fellow artists alike reveled in Sa's intra-generational appeal that, while timeless, is rooted in a definitively young, queer perspective. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Daniel Poppen, member of the union organizing committee at the Trader Joe's location in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, to discuss the staff's decision to file for a union election. Then, he speaks with Matt Bruenig, founder of the People's Policy Project, author of the NLRB Edge newsletter, and co-host of “The Bruenigs” podcast, to discuss his recent NLRB filing against Steven Crowder. First, Sam reacts to State Dept. spokesperson Matthew Miller refusing to answer the Associated Press's Matt Lee's question about why they've been unable to verify whether Israel struck an Iranian diplomatic target in Syria. Then, Sam's joined by Dan Poppen as they take us through the steps that led the Trader Joe's North Center location in Chicago to vote for a union election. Dan discusses some of the issues that have been facing Trader Joe's workers, the inspiration they've received from other unionizing Trader Joe's locations around the country, and what they can anticipate going forward after the vote totals are finalized. Then, Sam is joined by Matt Bruenig to discuss his representation of Jared Monroe, AKA "Not Gay Jared", the former "Louder With Crowder" employee, who has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) against Steven Crowder and the company. Bruenig outlines the main pillars that constitute the NLRB complaint, and provides some context to Jared's experience while working for Steven Crowder, what that entailed, and what they're hoping to achieve as the complaint is arbitrated and decided upon. And in the Fun Half, Sam reacts to Google employees demonstrating and conducting sit-ins against Google's work with Israel in their New York and California offices. He and Matt then check in on Speaker Johnson's tightrope walk, attempting to pass a supplemental foreign aid bill, which his far-right faction doesn't want. Johnson, who's now referring to him as a "wartime Speaker", is losing soldiers as an outline has been revealed, with Pennsylvania Rep. Scott Perry complaining that there's no border funding in the legislation (it was in another bill that Perry and his cohort didn't support). On the other end, former Kevin McCarthy confidant Rep. Garret Graves asks the all-important question: "What are Republicans getting" from this supplemental? And now, Speaker Johnson is only being offered tepid support from former President Trump, who is now willing to wait and see what happens to him with the motion to vacate looming over his head. Sam and Matt then turn to Trump's hush money trial, with Trump attorney and spokesperson Alina Habba telling Fox's Martha McCallum that Trump will be regarded like *wait for it* Nelson Mandela if he were to be put in jail for violating his gag order. Sam covers the recent Politico scoop of comedian Rob Schneider tanking a performance in front of Senate Republicans and their staffers, before diving into Trump's recent rally this weekend where he heard chants of "Genocide Joe!", to which he responded in part by saying: "You're not wrong". And, finally, Sam and Matt step into Dave Rubin's corner, where Rubin discusses his concerns about his inability to "arbitrage" the divide between the left and the right. Then, they check in on Dave's conversation with Will Cain from last week, where Dave tries his absolute hardest to take shots at Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens while *trying his absolute hardest* not to actually take shots at Tucker Carlson or Candace Owens. Super fun conversation with a great attorney and wonderful guy. Life lessons - winning in business and in life. https://www.mazeklaw.com/ Michael Mazek has had a passion for the legal profession since childhood, when he began managing rental properties for his Polish-immigrant parents as a teenager. This early entry into the Chicago landlord-tenant marketplace gave Mazek a unique perspective on the law. He saw that non-native English speakers and immigrants had a disadvantage in court. He also recognized that affordable housing is central to any municipality's success. His path into the legal profession was spurred by these inequalities. So after attending Chicago public schools from kindergarten through high school, Mazek graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a B.A. in English-Writing and a minor in Linguistics. During his time at UIC, Mazek was the recipient of the prestigious Edward Moskal Journalism Scholarship. He then earned his J.D. from The John Marshall Law School, where he was a member of the noted law review, The Journal of Computer and Information Law. In 2009, Mazek launched his private boutique firm, Mazek Law Group, to provide high quality legal representation at affordable rates. The practice is located in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, and handles cases in the suburbs, Chicago and collar counties. Mazek represents clients in the areas of real estate transactions (real estate closings, short sales, foreclosures and more), real estate litigation (adverse possession, lot line disputes, condo association conflict), estate planning (wills, trusts and other estate planning instruments), probate, criminal defense (federal criminal defense, state criminal defense, traffic, DUI and more) and bankruptcy (consumer, Chapter 7, Chapter 13). Mazek has given presentations for real estate offices and attorneys. He is a regular contributor to The Norton Annual Survey of Bankruptcy Law. He lives in Edison Park (Chicago), Illinois.

Sarah Cudnik is the Executive Director and Owner of Kids’ Work in Chicago, with two very active and successful locations. Sarah shares her insight from growing up in an environment where childcare was important, and what she learned from starting as a mother-daughter duo. She and Kris also discuss goal setting, creating a great work culture, and the key components of making a website look great. Sarah also discusses her goals to better understand her finances and the leaps and bounds she has made through mentorship and joining groups of like-minded individuals committed to success.   Key Takeaways: [9:44] Kids’ Work has two locations in the North Center of Chicago and has room for 230 families between the two centers. They are a combination of play-based and academic and strive to see the child for who they are as a unique individual. Sarah’s mother started an in-home daycare when she was younger, so early childcare is in her bloodlines. [12:07] Sarah and her mother started with an in-home daycare themselves and quickly went from a waitlist of 12 to 100 families. [14:55] Not only does Sarah have a busy professional life but she is also the proud mother of two active boys, ages 12 and 13. [16:28] Fun Fact: Karaoke is one of Sarah’s weaknesses, and don’t be surprised to see her rocking out to some Janis Joplin. [17:40] One unique thing about Kids’ Work is that they have plenty of play space in an urban environment. A few other strong suits that Sarah is very proud of include the amount of detail they put into their work and the way they naturally build rapport with the kids and families. [25:06] Kids’ Work worked with Grow Your Center to create a website that had beautiful photography, captivating copy that clearly explains their unique benefits, and a section dedicated to their core values. [29:26] Sarah and her team spent time getting clear on the words that surround their core values, and now the whole team is clear on how their actions every day are instrumental in staying in alignment. [31:23] The walls in preschool can be a great space to display fun and visually exciting imagery. For Kids’ Work, their core values are on the wall for all to see as they walk by. [37:15] Sarah’s late husband was extremely instrumental in setting up the business and making sure it consistently was financially sound. After his passing, Sarah knew she had to dedicate time and effort into learning for herself, before she handed the finances off to a bookkeeper. [49:10] A real rockstar to Sarah is someone with integrity who does the right thing and gives their all in their unique way.   Quotes:  “Parents of young children need a lot of support and understanding. Not only do we do that with children, but also with parents.” — Sarah “Nothing makes a parent happier than to feel like someone is excited about their kid, and that is the way our teachers are.” — Sarah “I just want our teachers to love work and to absolutely love coming to work.” — Sarah   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company Child Care Success Academy Child Care Success Summit — offering $1 ticket Grow Your Center Child Care Authority Child Care Exchange Kids’ Work Simon Sinek Simon Sinek Books Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, by Patrick Lencioni

Download Episode!         Stoney Lake Reflections Show Notes Episode: 01 Mary Mennel   I sat down with Mary Mennel at the 577 Foundation where she was the Executive Director for 28 years.  It was a beautiful August afternoon to discuss some of her Stoney Lake Reflections. I have known Mary since childhood, but we really got to know each other when she was the North Center Director and I was a long term camper during the Summers of ‘84 and ‘85. (Unbeknownst to me at the time, by me going to North Center , it created a small custody battle between Margaret Spoleman and Mary). Before Mary departed Storer in ‘89 she and Greg McKee interviewed me prior to my first year on staff in 1990!  During my time at Storer through various positions, I came to fully appreciate Mary’s approach to leadership and how important it was to have such a positive Storer role model. The interview is one part reunion and many parts reminiscing. Interviewers usually shouldn’t be fawning, but this is a podcast, not a formal interview :). Considering Mary’s 17 year professional tenure at camp, I was naturally eager to sit down with what I consider a Storer legend. She is much more humble than to easily accept such a distinction or moniker.  I felt that she would be my perfect guest to launch the Stoney Lake Reflections Podcast. Her laugh is as contagious as her enthusiasm for Camp Storer and I appreciate her graciously accepting my invitation to record her thoughts for Stoney Lake Reflections. SHOW NOTES Mary discusses working 28 Years at 577 Foundation Remembers surpassing 17 years at Storer and now is looking at retirement after growing and evolving the 577 foundation 577 Mission Includes- Community garden spaces, growing vegetables and flowers, all organic. Also planting a row for the local food bank, with last years donations at 1300 pounds! Year around garden in a solar energized geodesic dome. Community outreach includes meeting space for other non-profit groups at no cost, educational programs include a pottery barn, lending library, a historic log cabin from the 1800s, a scenic Maumee river walk and a fossil dig. Mary discusses how she considers herself very lucky in that she has had two careers that were a passion and a love…and not just jobs. Mary details her start at Storer as a camper. She then was asked to help out with the horses as a manager, with Outdoor Education. Later she was a center director in the Summer and Director for OE along with Greg McKee. Eventually taking over supervising both centers. Mary also chronicles the start of OE by Bryce Harbaugh, then Greg McKee bringing in his own staff to build upon that foundation.
