I think I would be right in saying that I've never gone after specific opportunities to serve God. Except, as I said yesterday, to serve him in Africa. That's because I think our service should be a response to God. It is God who takes the initiative in our call and in our sphere of service. When I offered for Africa and ended up in Brazil, what I learned then was that the important thing is to be available to God. We don't need to tell him where we should be serving him. He's probably got other ideas anyway, as I found out.Isaiah was in the temple when the vision of God's absolute glory and authority came to him, and the invitation from God to speak out (or prophesy) in God's name.
Relationship with GodRight at the heart of the Christian faith is relationship. We believe that God has reached out to us, in order to relate to us, to make Himself known to us – to draw us into oneness with Father, Son and Spirit. If you stop and think about that, it sounds preposterous, doesn't it? How can we know an invisible, ineffable, eternal, omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, triune deity?

What are the consequences? Its Friday morning and yet another week of devotions has flown by. All week we've been reflecting on sin. We began by asking the obvious question – what exactly is sin. Then we thought about the origin of sin and how that affects our lives today. On Wednesday we thought about corporate and structural sin and then yesterday thought about sin in the church. Today we are going to finish the week with a chance to reflect on the consequences of sin. Sin – so what?
God is OmniscientIsaiah 40:12-3112 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? 13 Who can fathom the Spirit[a] of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as his counsellor? 14 Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?

Come to meDo you like receiving invitations? Our two children seem to get no end of invites to birthday parties at the moment. Perhaps because so many parties didn't happen in the last few years, every child is having one this year to make up for it and celebrate their birthday. Scripture is full of invitations. The Living God is an inviting God. We are going to look at some of those invitations this week – we are going to marvel that the God who made everything, stoops down to invite us into friendship – He even offers breakfast to His friends!
