What is Holiness | Isaiah 6:1-7 | 081725 by Corey
At the end of our last episode we were introduced to Asa's son, King Jehoshaphat, and today we'll read further accounts of his life. Jehoshaphat instituted a plan to educate Judah in the ways of the Lord, sending officials and priests out with the book of the Lord's instruction. Remember that Asa failed to call upon the name of the Lord when there was threat of war, but by contrast, Jehoshaphat regularly calls upon the Lord throughout this narrative. Each time Jehoshaphat humbles himself and prays or calls a prophet to inquire of the Lord, the Lord is gracious and delivers him from trouble, blessing Judah with riches and peace.2 Chronicles 18 - 1:09 . 2 Chronicles 19 - 9:29 . 2 Chronicles 20 - 12:08 . The signs, visions, and prophecies included into today's reading span from the death of King Uzziah into the beginning of Ahaz's reign, who continues the lineage of Davidic kings. In chapter 6 we get an awe-inspiring sneak peek into the throne room of God. Isaiah senses that he is unfit to be in God's presence, but an angel approaches to cleanse him in a unique way. After this, the Lord God commissions Isaiah to be his messenger. In chapter 7, Isaiah prophesies to King Ahaz of a virgin who conceive and give birth to a son and name him Immanuel. This prophecy had an immediate fulfillment, as a statement about the amount of time which would pass between then and the invasion of the Assyrian king, but it has it's ultimate fulfillment in the birth of Christ.Isaiah 6 - 1:06 . Dr. Stephanie Robillard continues our sermon series and shares with us about her commitment to abolition as both a political vision and a broader set of habits, practices, and mindsets that are connected to God's vision of shalom. How might we continue to transform our heads and hearts to move toward a world without prisons and carceral systems?

What's the deal with Isaiah having the hot coal touched to his mouth? In today's episode, Emma Dotter talks with Co-Founder and CEO of The Eden Project, Nathan Wagnon, about Isaiah 6-9. Nathan helps us understand the cultural context of the coals touching the mouth of Isaiah in chapter 6, and teaches us that this was a cleansing of Isaiah for his ministry. It's easy to see the Bible as fable, a kind of religious fairy tale with a moralistic sting in its tail.Passages like this one show that much of the book is rooted in actual historical events. These chapters are a snapshot of the late eighth century BC Middle East. The prophet Isaiah is begging the king of one of these nations (Ahaz of Judah) not to enter an alliance with two others (Israel and Aram) against the threat of an invasion from the Assyrian Empire.Instead, Ahaz should rely on God.In his prophecy which involves naming his own children as a sign to Judah and describing dead bodies lying like excrement on Jerusalem's streets, Isaiah appears to predict the arrival of Jesus, a divine rescuer who he refers to enigmatically as 'The Light of the World.'Written and produced by Chas BayfieldMusic by Michael Auld and Jon Hawkins MusicCover art by Lisa GoffSend any comments or feedback to contact@whollybuyable.comX: @WhollyBuyable

To conclude our study of Isaiah chapter six, Darnell focuses on the call God gives to Isaiah: “Go! Say to these people…” (v. 9). In verses 8–13, the Lord commissions Isaiah to be a light in a dark and unresponsive world. For us today, this reveals our calling as believers: to reflect God's glory throughout the earth for all time. This divine mission echoes the same message found in all four Gospels. Darnell also challenges the idea that simply being “nice” is the same as being a light. If the power of God's plan rested on human kindness alone, there would have been no need for Jesus to die in our place. The power of the gospel flows from the Creator Himself—we are merely instruments of His grace. All who are in Christ Jesus are called to live life on mission, bringing His light into every corner of darkness. The only question that remains is: will you go?
In this message from Isaiah 6:1–8, we're reminded that true surrender begins with seeing God clearly, recognizing our own sinfulness, and receiving His forgiveness. When we encounter God's holiness, the only right response is total surrender.

Wherever the Lord of the harvest calls you to go, be willing to go and to faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ there.
Do You Know the Code? (Isaiah 6:8-13) - Morning Sermon
Sometimes being faithful to the Lord means finding difficulty rather than ease. Today as we discuss Isaiah 6, we look at the Lord's call for Isaiah and the warning that God's calling for Isaiah going to be rough. We can be encouraged that difficulties in life and service to the Lord may be part of the call God has for our life too! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. In your life, where are you serving the Lord? When times get difficult in that service, how do you tend to respond? 2. Verse 1 contains Isaiah's vision of the Lord. What (of the Lord) fills the temple? What is this? What does its size indicate about the Lord? 3. In verse 2, what stood above the Lord? The podcast mentioned that the name of these beings literally means “burning ones” and yet, they cover their faces. What does this indicate about the presence of the Lord? 4. In verse 3, what did the seraphim call out to the Lord? What is the importance of repeating this three times? What does this indicate about the Lord's character? 5. In verse 5, how does Isaiah react to this vision of the Lord? What was his main concern? Why? 6. In verse 6, what does the Seraphim do? How might it have been possible for this seraph to be holding a burning coal? 7. In verse 7, what is the result of the Isaiah's lips touching the coal? How might passages like Numbers 31:22-23 help us understand the impact of fire on a person's sin? 8. Notice the “us” in verse 8. What does this indicate about the nature of God? 9. What does the Lord ask in verse 8? What does Isaiah's response indicate about his heart to serve the Lord? 10. What does the Lord tell Isaiah he is to do in verse 9? How will the people respond in verses 9 & 10? 11. If the Lord gave you this commission, how would you feel? Along these lines, what did Isaiah ask at the beginning of verse 11? Why? What was the Lord's answer? 12. What kind of judgment does the Lord foretell in verse 12? 13. What glimmer of hope does the Lord give Isaiah in verse 13? Why is this all a person needs to be faithful in their ministry? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! This week, Pastor Shelby preached from Isaiah 6:1–10, where we witness the prophet Isaiah encounter the glory and holiness of God. in a vision of the throne room of God. Overwhelmed by the presence of the Lord, Isaiah confesses, "Woe is me," recognizing his own sin and unworthiness. Yet God, purifies Isaiah through the touching of the hot coal to his lips—a foreshadowing of the purification we would receive through the sacrifice of Jesus. Isaiah's story doesn't end with shame; it leads to purpose. He moves from "Woe is me" to "Here I am, send me." That same transformation is available to us today. As a church, we're committed to walking alongside believers—not letting anyone stay stuck in the "woe is me" stage, but helping equip and encourage each person to step boldly into what God is calling them to do.
