Addiction, psychedelic medicine, legalization and the decriminalization of sex work… Our guest, Randy Hencken, is no stranger to big ideas and challenging the status quo. As we discuss the topic of psychedelic medicines, our conversation naturally transitions to the decriminalization of sex work. Randy's experience with advocacy and political strategy in both fields provides valuable insight into the differences and similarities between these two areas of reform, and how they can inform each other in the pursuit of greater social justice.“I learned that people aren't evil in most cases, that they just have different opinions they have different values”Randy Hencken, is a business strategist for Prisms AI and recently a political consultant for Decriminalize Sex Work. He was a co-founder of Blue Frontiers, an organization that aimed to build a floating city in French Polynesia, and previously served as the Executive Director of The Seasteading Institute. In addition, Randy was the Chairman of the Board for Students for Sensible Drug Policy and the Communication Director for the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), where he organized the first MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference in San Jose in 2011. He was also the Associate Director for the Ibogaine Association based in Mexico. Randy holds a Masters degree in Communication Studies and a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from San Diego State University. He is joining the show to discuss his successful overcoming of addiction to heroin and cocaine using the psychedelic medicine Ibogaine in 2001. Randy resides in Snowmass Village, Colorado with his wife and doodle, and spends as much time as he can outdoors, snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, and white water rafting. Nathalie Mezza-Garcia is a complexity scientist and founder and CEO of Seaphia, a consulting firm for floating architecture projects. She is also the former Seavangelesse for Blue Frontiers and their Floating Island Project in French Polynesia. She recently launched the Journal of Special Jurisdictions offering a balanced analysis of ideas around new governance structures. In this episode, Nathalie explains how she came to study seasteading after thinking about human societies as complex systems and concluding that current governance systems are failing to do what they’re supposed to do. She explains that in order to improve the way decisions get made in complex human societies, we must change our perspective, and seasteading provides the flexibility to do that. Nathalie shares the lessons she learned from her experience as the international spokesperson for the Floating Island Project in French Polynesia. She talks about the importance of forming relationships with the local residents and policy makers. One of her guiding principles for Seaphia is to build strong relationships with local residents, institutions and governments.  She advises seasteaders to do thorough research of the partners who get involved in seasteading companies, just like dating someone before deciding to marry that person. Nathalie explains that it’s easy to find locations where it is technically possible to place a seastead platform, but the complicated part is finding a location where the local partners are enthusiastic about your project. Seaphia is a consulting service to do market testing for potential seastead projects. They determine how a seasteading business can get to a point that serves the local community as well as business investors. A floating Pacific island with its own government, cryptocurrency and 300 houses could be in the near future. The Floating Island Project plans to create off-shore housing that uses its own currency and operates outside of government regulations. The project is a pilot program in partnership with the government of French Polynesia. A long-term vision for the project is to have hundreds of countries floating on the ocean. Blue Frontiers are building sustainable floating islands to address sea level rise and negotiate special governing frameworks to catalyze innovation in governance.

For the past 7 years, the Sea Steading Institute has been promoting human habitation at sea to explore new ways of sustainable living for humanity. In 2017 they began to work on how to build the first sea-stead, and created Blue Frontiers in order to help offer returns to their investors. They have a partnership with French Polynesia to build and launch their first sea-stead, and hope to complete this within the next decade. After this is completed, they will be looking to expand their operations around the world. Their first sea-stead prototype will be a barge-like platform with several floors, will be made of specialized concrete, marine-grade stainless steel, and composite materials, and will house 200-300 people. Because many people already live near the water, Blue Frontiers believes that these types of settlements will become necessary due to rising sea levels, and can offer people not only sustainable and comfortable living, but can offer the opportunity to explore new ways to govern themselves.
