Perspective is everything. For today's guest, the experiences and the things he saw as a young man shaped how he viewed the world, freedom, and his role to play in fighting for that very freedom. As men, we need a mission, a calling that will change the world. In this episode, Stephen Mansfield discusses with the young men of Apogee Strong how they can hone in on and utilize their own skills to do just that. STEPHEN MANSFIELD Stephen is a New York Times bestselling author, entrepreneur, and popular speaker who is a servant of several vital social causes. Stephen is also deeply concerned about the current state of manhood. To help reverse the downward trend of modern masculinity, he has written leading books on the subject, has appeared in major media, has spoken at conferences around the world, and has launched the GreatMan movement to train men in the art of noble manhood. Stephen grew up as the son of a US Army officer, and spent many formative years living in Berlin during the dark days of the Cold War. Returning to the US, he attended college, earning a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy and later a master's in history and public policy and a doctorate in history and literature. There are two things that we have explored extensively on this show. 1. Schooling is vastly different from education- the two are not synonymous and 2. The greatest success is often found in the most unconventional ways by simply paying attention and taking action. Both are the case for today's guest, Miranda Alcaraz who, in collaboration with her husband, has built out a successful, no-nonsense fitness community that provides their community with the resources they need to take control of their fitness every single day. MIRANDA ALCARAZ Miranda grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. She went to school for interior design, and during this time she was also teaching spin and cardio kick-boxing classes. Graduated, and then began working at a high-end furniture and design store but found herself gravitating to the kind of community in health and fitness more. Crossfit was the first time she competed as an athlete, participating in the 2008 Crossfit games and competing until 2016. An idea was formed during a busy time in Miranda's and now husband's life. Post the simple workouts we are doing at home or on the road – so people can follow along. Charge a fee that will allow anyone to participate. Create a community where we can push and motivate each other. The first-ever workouts were posted in November 2016 (just a few days before Miranda found out she was pregnant with their first baby boy). Memberships went up for sale the week before the New Year, and within the first month, Street Parking had grown to 700 Members. MORE PLACES YOU CAN FIND MIRANDA. MARCUS AURELIUS ANDERSON Today's guest is Marcus Aurelius Anderson, a proud Veteran, Bestselling Author of “The Gift of Adversity”, TEDx & International Keynote Speaker, Mindset Coach to Leaders, CEO’s and Entrepreneurs, Lifelong Martial Artist, creator of the Acta Non Verba Movement, and host of the Acta Non Verba Podcast. While preparing to deploy with the U.S. Army Light Infantry, Marcus suffered a severe spinal injury that left him paralyzed from the neck down. After dying on the operating table twice, the surgeons saved his life but told him he’d never walk or use his hands again. After months of anger and suicidal depression, having no other option, Marcus started doing some brutally honest soul searching, looking for the lesson to be learned from his injury. Once he started seeing his Adversity as a gift instead of a curse, something miraculous began to happen… Marcus now speaks, inspires, and teaches others to use their Adversity as a catalyst to actualize their personal definition of success in every area of life and business. His message teaches us how we can use our own Adversity to make us into better warriors, leaders, entrepreneurs, and human beings to create a better world. One of the most challenging things to be good at is comedy. It's always a balance between relatableness, bluntness, and timing. It's a hard thing to master. I truly believe that it takes a special kind of person and a special kind of mindset. Josh Blue is truly a super-human in comedy. We get into his backstory, and the amount of material that he was writing within short blocks of time is just unheard of. He got good by being willing to put himself out there time and again, seeing what worked and what flopped. That's how we get good at anything- fail fast and fail often. JOSH BLUE Today's guest is Josh Blue. Following his groundbreaking win on NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2006, Josh Blue has risen through the ranks to become a well-established headliner at venues throughout the world. In 2018, Josh crushed his set on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In the same year, he was honored with a performance at the William H. Macy Gala at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, Canada. He wrapped up 2018 by recording his fifth-hour special at his home club, Comedy Works in Denver, CO. Josh does over 200 shows a year, continuing to spread laughter and break down stereotypes of people with disabilities. His stand-up routine is in a constant state of evolution and his off-the-cuff improvisational skills guarantee that no two shows are alike. If I had all the time in the world, this conversation would have gone on forever. Sevan has such an incredible understanding of raising happy and free children that truly resonated with me. Our role as parents is to provide an environment that allows our young people to learn to be self-sufficient while protecting them from the mountain lions that may seek to attack while they're down. It's not our job to always pick the child back up, we allow them to learn that they are capable of doing it themselves. Our job is handling the things they're not capable of yet and allow them to expand their level of capability themselves. That's how they learn self-confidence. That's where self-awareness is cultivated. SEVAN MATOSSIAN Today's guest is Sevan Matossian. Sevan has been involved in CrossFit Media since the start of CrossFit itself. He is a producer and director, known for Our House (2003), Pulling John (2009), and Every Second Counts: The Story of the 2008 CrossFit Games (2009). Sevan is a content king. From creating tremendous value for the CrossFit community to now creating content with his three young sons on fitness, running a personal podcast, and a podcast with himself, Josh Bridges, and Mat Fraser. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS Sevan's passion and self-discipline has manifested his success 2:58 How he figured out his self-discipline Doesn’t close doors in his brain. 8:54 Meditation is about having an aware mind, how you can use this to have a greater mind 11:14 Consistency creates freedom for your children. You have to have rules. The rules themselves matter less than just having rules 12:40 If your child falls down and you pick them up, you just stole from them. 22:13 From the moment you consume something addicting, you lose control of the thing between your ears 31:59 Nothing compares to the pride of watching your child grow 36:22 Creating a lasting impact on others 39:51 The importance of showing love to your children 40:45 The long-term effects we have on children 45:18 You should not introduce fear to your child that they cannot mitigate 48:03 The importance of "please and thank you" 53:29 PLACES YOU CAN FIND SEVAN Instagram - @sevanmatossian Podcasts - The Sevan Podcast , Josh Mat Sevan YouTube - 3 Playing Brothers MORE CONTENT Follow me on social to get the latest updates and Essential content. Fridays are always my favorite. Not because it's the start of the weekend but because I get to hop on these calls with the aspiring, young, savage gentlemen of Apogee and the likes of the most savage gentleman: Josh Tyler. Life is not without its challenges. There is a huge advantage to those who seek challenge out early so they're more equipped for those ahead of them. Today we chat about the value of finding the mentor who will push you to be your best. Remaining humble to the fact they likely know better than you will put you worlds and away above the competition. JOSH TYLER Today's guest is Josh Tyler, a professional fighter and survivalist. He is the co-founder of Savage Gentleman, a retail brand and ethos that believes that men are both savages and gentlemen. Josh is also the host of a podcast by the same name. I've followed Josh for a long time, within the fighting sphere and his brand Savage Gentleman. The concept of the Savage Gentleman is something that has deeply resonated with me. It's a phrase that I use to describe the qualities of a man who is a good man and is good at being a man. This is the foundational mentality that we're working to create in the young men in Apogee. Much of the credit for that goes to the mindsets of men like Josh Tyler. THE SAVAGE GENTLEMAN "The world is full of savages and gentlemen. Rare is it to find the man who can be both. It is not ideal void of all traits of masculinity, nor is it suitable to succumb to one’s every base desire. There must be a balance struck between the two sides of the same coin that is manhood. This is the plight of the savage gentlemen, to cultivate both aspects of his being and achieve his full potential." SHOW HIGHLIGHTS The origin story 3:18 The invention of savage gentleman 8:36 Josh Tyler in a movie 12:44 Matt’s first fight 17:09 Fighting is like the wild west 20:13 Once you’ve wrestled, the volume on everything else gets turned down 22:20 Don’t Quit. Dawson Church - The Mind to Matter Man

We frequently talk about the importance of mindset on the Essential 11, particularly how your mindset will affect how you handle tough situations, how resilient you are, and how your mindset can drive your success. But what if we told you your mindset directly correlates to how long you live, the very expression of your genes, and shape the anatomy of your brain? That's exactly the scientific-based info that today's guest Dawson Church brings to this episode. Dawson is a researcher and the author of several award-winning science books. Research teams led by Dawson have published many clinical trials. His studies with veterans have shown that, using advanced psychological methods, over 80% recover from PTSD. He'll talk about his own journey- starting way back 100,000 years ago (don't worry, he summarizes)- and covers his own battle with depression and anxiety as a young person, how he came to look in the mirror and ask himself "why"? His journey in psychology and spirituality began to answer that question then solve it for so many others. We also touch on how cortisol was once a necessary anatomical response to danger but is now a direct threat to health, how optimism can allow you to live longer, and the only kind of drugs Dawson would recommend.
