Today, with power increasingly concentrated in Washington DC, many Americans are feeling the loss of their consent. What do you do when neither presidential pick represents your beliefs, and there is no credible third party to turn to for help?Is there a third way?This Sunday, I was joined by two leading experts on “competitive governance” – a truly revolutionary idea that promises to renew freedom of choice and consent of the governed. Joe Quirk, President of The Seasteading Institute, and open source legal theorist and Chapman University law professor Tom W. They call themselves “Seasteaders” and this month their dream took another big leap towards reality. The plan is to build a floating nation near French Polynesia. Expected to be completed by 2022 the island will include 300 homes along with hotels, restaurants and offices and more. The total cost is $50 million and it’s being bankrolled by PayPal founder Peter Thiel. The Floating Island Project is being guided by The Seasteading Institute. Carbon sequestration is an integral part of reversing climate change. The question becomes, where can we permanently store all of that CO2? One possibility lies in the basalt rock under the ocean floor. In fact, Earth science researchers at Columbia University have a project in the works that could scale up to capture millions of tons of carbon dioxide annually.  Today Ross and Christophe are speaking with Dr. David Goldberg, esteemed professor of Marine Geology and Geophysics at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, to learn about the process of carbon sequestration under the ocean floor. Dr. Goldberg explains how the process of mineralization works in basalt rock and shares the positive results of similar projects in Iceland and Washington. Two weeks ago, Bob welcomed Czech native Vit Jedlicka to the show, to discuss his nascent new country of Liberland, located in the no-man's-land between Serbia and Croatia. While Vit is busy recruiting a global legion of volunteers and ambassadors for his new country effort, a related movement is picking up steam right here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Seasteading Institute, founded in 2008 in Silicon Valley, is a nonprofit organization leading the push to populate the high seas with hundreds, or even thousands, of brand-new “startup” societies. Each “seastead” would compete for citizens like businesses compete for customers.
