For years, the propagandists with the greatest visibility in the United States were on television; the ones who contributed most to the “manufacture of consent.” Think Fox News. Talk about cascading consequences: when a few nerds wanted to get high and orchestrated a small exchange of cannabis, they kicked off the age of ecommerce. Now that online shopping and the technology supporting it have ramped up commercialization and supercharged consumerism, we're facing existential crises. Exactly what nefarious internet innovation might lead Jason to unbox a trebuchet? Why would Asher consider having an Amazon truck deliver his kid to school? What's the most efficient way for Rob to get his plastic packaging to the ocean so it can choke the most marine mammals? Get online, order a must-have product (perhaps that pair of fentanyl-laced blue jeans you've been eyeing), and take part in the end times of capitalism. Or consider canceling that Amazon Prime account, shutting off the computer for a spell, and getting busy prioritizing community over consumption. If you watched the Super Bowl this year, it was hard not to notice that cryptocurrency had fully arrived. Even Larry David was hawking crypto.  But over the past several weeks, the crypto markets, like other markets, have been melting down. Some coins have completely imploded. Some crypto banks have shut their digital doors, refusing to give customers access to their money. And companies like Coinbase are laying off workers. Crypto winter has arrived. Today: a debate. Is crypto really the future of money? And is this blip just a normal hiccup in an otherwise exciting, transformational technological advancement? Or was crypto always more hype than reality?  Anthony Pompliano is a crypto believer. He's an entrepreneur and investor and a former lead at Facebook. He's also the host of the Pomp podcast and the writer of a crypto newsletter called Off the Chain. Michael Green is a major crypto skeptic. He has been an investor for more than 30 years. Like the frontier characters from Deadwood, his favorite TV show, Marc Andreessen has discovered that the real challenge to building in new territory is not in the practicalities of learning a trade, but in developing a savviness for what makes people tick. Without understanding the deep patterns of human behavior, how can you know what to build, or who should build it, or how? For Marc, that means reading deeply in the humanities: “I spent the first 25 years of my life trying to understand how machines work,” Marc says. “Then I spent the second 25 years, so far, trying to figure out how people work. It turns out people are a lot more complicated.” Marc joined Tyler to discuss his ever-growing appreciation for the humanities and more, including why he didn't go to a better school, his contrarian take on Robert Heinlein, how Tom Wolfe helped Marc understand his own archetype, who he'd choose to be in Renaissance Florence, which books he's reread the most, Twitter as an X-ray machine on public figures, where in the past he'd most like to time-travel, his favorite tech product that no longer exists, whether Web will improve podcasting, the civilization-level changes made possible by remote work, Peter Thiel's secret to attracting talent, which data he thinks would be most helpful for finding good founders, how he'd organize his own bookstore, the kinds of people he admires most, and why Deadwood is equal to Shakespeare. During its formative years in the late 1990's, Paypal attracted an extraordinary group of young entrepreneurs, who then went on to build some of the best known companies in tech. They became known as The PayPal Mafia—and Max Levchin was one of the leaders. A computer genius from Soviet Ukraine, Max joined Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman and others as they grew PayPal into a massively successful online payment service. Along the way, they encountered almost every start-up challenge imaginable, including the emotional ouster of Elon Musk as CEO. After PayPal was acquired by eBay in 2002, Max couldn't sit still, so he launched a startup lab that eventually led to another successful fintech company: Affirm. Transhumanism makes grand claims about the future of humankind, from genetic engineering and artificial wombs to immortality and uploading humanity to the cloud. Lead by pseudo-scientific thinkers like Ray Kurzeil, Transhumanism has become a popular ideology among Silicon Valley tech leaders including Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. In recent years it has also become the focus of conspiracy theorists from Anti-Vaxxers to Qanon, who claim the ultimate goal of the "global elite" is to turn humans into post-humans. The truth is that Transhumanism is a fantasy born in the pages of science fiction. While authors like Bruce Sterling and William Gibson warned against the terrors of Transhumanism, today's Transhumanists see it as an inevitability, and have transformed the fantasy of Transhumanism into an anti-human religion. 00:00:00 The Torment Nexus 00:01:34 Welcome to the Science Fiction podcast 00:04:06 Beyond our ape brained meat-sacks - a profile of Elise Bohan 00:08:23 We are in a time between worlds & Transhuman conspiracy theories 00:13:14 Understanding Transhumanism as narrative, storytelling and modern mythos 00:19:15 ONE - Transhumanism is Utopian 00:24:06 TWO - Transhumanism assumes fundamental change 00:26:00 THREE - Transhumanism is a pseudo-science 00:29:34 FOUR - Transhumanism is a religious vision of transcendence 00:34:38 FIVE - Transhumanism is authoritarian 00:39:12 SIX - Transhumism wants to liberate us from our human bodies 00:44:38 SEVEN - Transhumanism is science fiction 00:48:04 EIGHT - Transhumanism believes technology is the force of progress 00:51:40 NINE - Transhumanism devalues the human 00:55:58 TEN - "We're building God you know." 01:06:53 ELEVEN - Transhumanism is a power structure 01:13:01 TWELVE - Transhumanism is dystopian 01:16:20 THIRTEEN - Transhumanism is anti-humanism Beyond Our Ape Brained Meat Sacks - https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/jun/04/beyond-our-ape-brained-meat-sacks-can-transhumanism-save-our-species Jonathan Rowson on Zak Stein and our time between worlds - https://twitter.com/Jonathan_Rowson/status/1532318004071084034 Follow the the Science Fiction podcast and become a member https://damiengwalter.com/podcast/ Advanced Scifi & Fantasy Writing https://damiengwalter.com/advanced-scifi-and-fantasy/ The Rhetoric of Story https://damiengwalter.com/the-rhetoric-of-story/ Join the discussion on the Science Fiction community https://www.facebook.com/groups/324897304599197

Curiosity, Focus, and Forging a Path.In this episode of The Outspoken Podcast, host Shana Cosgrove talks to Gerard Spivey, Senior Systems Development Engineer at Amazon Web Services. Gerard speaks in detail about Amazon's interview process, giving us insight into their procedures and how he prepared himself. We also hear about Gerard's time at Amazon and the types of work he's taking on. Side hustles are a way of life for Gerard, and he speaks about his latest experiences managing his YouTube channel, Gerard's Curious Tech. Lastly, Gerard talks about his time at NYLA and how he was able to bring his full self to work thanks to NYLA's culture. QUOTES “I can do slow and steady, I can find my target audience, and then once I have that I can figure out what I want to parlay that into later.” - Gerard Spivey [25:59] “‘I'm a Senior Director [at Intel], and I can do what I want' is basically what he told me. He's like ‘the company has a 3.0 thing, but for someone like you who actually knows what they're talking about it's not a problem.' So I said, ‘Ooh this is my time, they're letting me in'” - Gerard Spivey [42:07] “You're in a good spot in your career when you're valued for the thing you're going to do next versus the thing you did previously. What you're going to do next is your competitive value - that is what you bring to the table.” - Gerard Spivey [48:27]   TIMESTAMPS  [00:04] Intro [01:31] Gerard's Wedding Ceremony [02:32] Working at Amazon Web Services (AWS) [05:33] Amazon's Interview Process [12:06] Gerard's Experience with the Job Market [15:54] Working at Amazon [19:11] Starting a New Job During COVID [19:43] Side Hustles [23:21] Gerard's YouTube Channel [31:08] Gerard's Childhood [31:52] How Gerard Decided to Study Electrical Engineering [34:19] Choosing a College [45:13] Gerard's Advice to his Younger Self [47:42] Favorite Books [50:57] Gerard's Time at NYLA [55:36] Outro RESOURCES https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/ (Amazon EC2) https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/ (Amazon EC2 Instance Types) https://aws.amazon.com/dynamodb/ (Amazon DynamoDB) https://sre.google/ (Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)) https://www.c2stechs.com/ (Commercial Cloud Services (C2S)) https://www.thebalancecareers.com/what-is-the-star-interview-response-technique-2061629 (STAR Interview Response Method) https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/exchange/email (Microsoft Exchange) https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/ (Microsoft Azure) https://www.synopsys.com/glossary/what-is-cicd.html (CI/CD) https://mlt.org/ (Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT)) https://www.hbs.edu/ (Harvard Business School) https://a16z.com/ (Andreessen Horowitz) https://www.youtube.com/ (YouTube) https://www.nsbe.org/K-12/Programs/PCI-Programs (NSBE Pre-College Initiative Program) https://www.jhu.edu/ (Johns Hopkins University) https://www.abet.org/ (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)) https://www.ncat.edu/ (North Carolina A&T State University) https://www.morgan.edu/ (Morgan State University) https://howard.edu/ (Howard University) https://www.rit.edu/ (Rochester Institute of Technology) https://www.psu.edu/ (Penn State University) https://www.digitaltechnologieshub.edu.au/teach-and-assess/classroom-resources/topics/digital-systems/ (Digital Systems) https://www.xilinx.com/products/silicon-devices/fpga/what-is-an-fpga.html (Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs)) https://www.gwu.edu/ (The George Washington University) https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/homepage.html (Intel) https://www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/pci-express (PCI Express) https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/io/serial-ata/serial-ata-developer.html (Serial ATA (SATA)) https://consortium.org/ (Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area) https://www.amazon.com/Zero-One-Notes-Startups-Future/dp/0804139296 (Zero to One) by Peter Thiel and Blake Masters https://www.richdad.com/...

The Terrifying and Stupid Ideas of "Neoreactionaries"

A recent article in Vanity Fair about the National Conservatism Conference profiles figures on the "New Right," including Peter Thiel, J.D. Vance, Blake Masters, and a deeply unpleasant individual called Curtis Yarvin, a.k.a. Mencius Moldbug. Yarvin/Moldbug is an advocate of "neoreactionary" politics and explicitly believes in ending democracy and instituting a dictatorship in the United States. J.D. Vance, who may well be a U.S. senator soon, admits in the Vanity Fair profile that he is an admirer of Yarvin's thinking. For a long time, "neoreactionary" thought dwelled mostly in the darker corners of the internet, but we may well soon see these ideas become more mainstream as the American right becomes increasingly extreme and hostile to the democratic process.Today on the podcast, author Elizabeth Sandifer joins to discuss "neoreaction": what its tenets are and why it is both incredibly stupid and incredibly terrifying. Sandifer is the author of Neoreaction a Basilisk: Essays on and Around the Alt-Right. Sandifer's book profiles some key neoreactionary thinkers and is a witty demolition of their horrible ideas. In this episode, Sandifer explains the core of neoreactionary philosophy, including some of the more bizarre ideas to percolate through this ecosystem such as the "basilisk" of the title. We discuss why these ideas catch on and the threat they pose. The photograph above is of Curtis "Mencius Moldbug" Yarvin, who looks precisely like what you'd expect a sinister pro-dictatorship pseudointellectual named Moldbug to look.

Jonathan Bi is a startup founder, philosopher and mathematician. René Girard is one of the most popular philosophers in Silicon Valley. Why is it that an obscure French polymath from the 1900's would become one of the most influential and cited thinkers amongst founders, CEOs and leaders in high-growth companies?  Expect to learn how Girard believes that mimetic desire drives almost all of our behaviour, why breaking out from the group to do your own thing doesn't mean you're an individual, how having sex can end up not being for the enjoyment of sex, why Peter Thiel and so many others love Girard's work, how understanding Girard can improve your daily life and much more... Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy made headlines recently when he announced the creation of a new financial firm, backed by Peter Thiel, that would do something shocking in woke corporate America today: invest in companies that focus on profit and innovation, not taking political and cultural stances. Vivek joins us to examine the new iteration of corporate cronyism that he's fighting back against; where a small cartel of asset management firms like BlackRock manipulate free markets to implement progressive politics at the expense of companies, shareholders, and everyday citizens. Vivek Ramaswamy is the author of the NY Times bestselling book "Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America's Social Justice Scam", a biotech investor and founder of the new fund manager Strive with investors Peter Thiel and Bill Ackman. Miguel Armaza sits down with Jimmy Soni, writer and best-selling author of The Founders: The Story of Paypal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley. If you've talked to me over the last month, chances are I've recommended you read Jimmy's book. In fact, I think every early-stage fintech founder, operator, and investor should pick up a copy of The Founders, where Jimmy does a brilliant job at detailing some of the most interesting years of PayPal. From day zero in 1998, down to the 2002 eBay acquisition. This book will transport you to the days when Elon Musk, Max Levchin, Peter Thiel, David Sacks, Roelof Botha, Reid Hoffman, and a long list of PayPal Mafia characters fought day in and day out to build one of the most influential fintech companies in the world. Some of my favorite highlights include finding product-market fit, pioneering fraud-fighting techniques that are still widely used in the industry to this day, fiercely competing against eBay, and – especially relevant these days - fundraising in the midst of the dot-com bubble. Enjoy!Want more podcast episodes? In this bonus episode, Matt takes Sam on a tour of his native state, Pennsylvania, where a number of key primaries were held this week. The results brought some hopeful news: Lt. Gov. John Fetterman handily defeated State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and (even better) Manchin-backed moderate Rep. Conor Lamb in the contest for the Democratic senate nomination. But it also revealed the madness that continues to grip the GOP: State Sen. Doug Mastriano, a January 6 marcher and election-fraud true believer, will be running for governor in November, and Dr. Oz, as of this writing, was clinging to a narrow lead in the race to take on Fetterman. Don't worry, though, it's not all punditry: the cuisines, strange regional dialects, and curious folkways of the virtuous commonwealth also are discussed. Then the episode turns to the fortunes of the Thiel tools: J.D. Vance and Blake Masters, both of whom are running for the Senate (Vance in Ohio and Masters in Arizona). The former won the Republican nod, and in come-from-behind fashion—how did he do it, especially after months of woke pundits dismissing his campaign? And what are Masters chances in August, when the Arizona GOP primary will be held?Subscribe to Know Your Enemy on Patreon to listen to this bonus episode, and all of our bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/knowyourenemy
