A coalition of sex workers, their allies, and lawmakers are encouraging Oregon to decriminalize sex work. They say current laws punish consenting adults who buy and sell sex, drawing a distinction from sex trafficking. But how would that work? And how will this differ from the messy process of decriminalizing drug possession in the state? Today on City Cast Portland, we're talking with Elle Stanger, a Portland-based certified holistic sex educator, sex worker, and host of the “They Talk Sex” podcast. They're here to help walk us through those questions. This interview touches on some explicit topics, including sex work and sex trafficking.  Resources: The Cupcake Girls Call to Safety Sexual Assault Resource Center Who would you like to hear on City Cast Portland? The debate over whether sex work should be decriminalized has been going on for years in South Africa. But the shocking discovery of the bodies of six women in October last year heightened the debate. They were believed to be sex workers – and campaigners said that only by making them legal – allowing them to seek help from the police without fear - would such people be protected. Now, the South African government is pressing ahead and changing the law. For today's Africa Daily, Mpho Lakaje speaks to a sex worker about how this may change her life – as well as to politicians on both sides of the debate. Today, we're going to be talking about sex. Specifically, we will be unpacking the act of having sex as a means of labor. If you're thinking, I don't have sex for money, nor do I want to have sex for money and I don't know anyone who does have sex for money. Why would I continue listening to this episode? You're right to ask that question - and what you will discover is that even if you are not in the sex work industry, there is still a lot you can do to both end human trafficking as well as promote health and safety for all those who are involved. To give this episode some further context - earlier this year, I had an unpleasant interaction with a man who was under the full belief that because a woman was doing a photoshoot in a public setting, that she had given up her own rights to the agency of her body and could be leered at and gawked at by anyone who chose to. This is the exact same rhetoric that leads to statements like, she would not have been sexually assaulted had she not worn that outfit. What this did was create an ongoing conversation around the idea “sex sells.” I was asking the question, who is profiting? It seemed to be okay if a man was profiting but raised a lot of concerns when it was a woman who was profiting.  I've talked to my dear friend and sex therapist, Dr. Jordan Wiggins about what consent is and is not. I also had a conversation with Nikole Mitchell, a top OnlyFans worker, about the misconceptions of sex workers and why there are such stigmas around those who choose to sell images of themselves if they are profiting. Today, we're going to zoom out and take a look at sex work from a broader context. My intention is to provide an economic exploration into the world's oldest profession and efforts to decriminalize sex work. My guest is Ariela Moscowitz who is the Director of Communications for Decriminalize Sex Work, a national organization pursuing a state-by-state strategy to end the prohibition of consensual adult prostitution in the United States. “If you really hate it so much and you don't want people to do it, the best thing you can do is to decriminalize it.” IN THIS EPISODE The true definition of sex work. What makes sex work illegal by the definition of the law. The difference between consensual sex work and human trafficking. The historical context of sex work. The 3 major objections to the trade. Why sex work needs to be decriminalized. Discrimination in the field. Selling a service versus selling their bodies. How the legal system punishes sex workers. The currently role that police play. Legalization versus decriminalization.  Steps we can take to improve the safety of those involved. They explain why decriminalization is the legislative proposal that can best guarantee the safety of marginalized people working in the sex trades, why sex work must ultimately be recognized as the labor that it is and be provided labor protections the same as any other work, and how the criminalization of work in the sex trades is part of a larger and centuries-long project by the state to target and criminalize Black and trans communities. They also discuss how the histories of sex workers organizing to support each other appear in current mutual aid projects, and how to support and promote their crucial work.Resources:New York legislation:Walking While Trans Ban Bill (New York Senate Bill 1351 /Assembly Bill 3355) (signed into law)Stop Violence in the Sex Trades Act (New York Senate Bill 3075 /Assembly Bill 849) (pending)Louisiana legislation:Louisiana House Bill 67 (pending)Deep South Decrim ToolkitSign-on form to support Louisiana House Bill 67

Hello everyone! After reading a thought-provoking article written by Gillian Friedman earlier this week, I've found myself once again pondering when the conversations around decriminalizing sex work will grow even half as strong as the talks to legalize weed. Legalizing sex work is a position that I am staunch on, and in this Friday impromptu episode, I speak on what forms that opinion for me. I'll be posting the links to the articles I referenced below, as promised. Public opinion and the law of the land aligned this week to affirm trans equality in America: Thousands of people took to the streets of New York City over the weekend to remind their community and the nation: Black trans lives matter. Then on Monday, the Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision establishing that under federal law, it's unlawful to fire someone just because they’re part of the LGBTQ community. Still, there's so much more to be done to protect and uplift trans people nationwide. LaLa Zannell, the ACLU's Trans Justice Campaign Manager, joins the podcast this week to talk about the state of the movement for Black trans lives, and why decriminalizing sex work is a meaningful and concrete next step as we continue to fight for true equality.

Today on Sojourner Truth: Trump intends to impose tariffs on all goods coming from Mexico, despite opposition from the GOP caucus. Meanwhile, bowing to demands from Trump, Mexico is already cracking down on migrants coming from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala before they reach the U.S. border. Also, Trump is redefining what a humanitarian crisis means, referring now to a humanitarian crisis at the border, while ignoring the real humanitarian crisis of human suffering. This includes children who were detained by ICE and still not returned to their families, families kept in detention centers under questionable conditions, children being detained for long periods of time in violation of the Flores Agreement, which is law, and the deaths of children. Most recently, a trans migrant from El Salvador died while they were being held in U.S. custody. In Part II of our bonus episode in this special Working People series on sex work, we chat to the amazing Alex Andrews, an organizer, former sex worker, and co-founder of SWOP Behind Bars, part of the Sex Workers Outreach Project. SWOP Behind Bars “is a national social justice network dedicated to the fundamental human rights of people who face discrimination from the criminal justice system due to the stigma associated with the sex trade.” We talk to Alex about what led her to get involved with SWOP Behind Bars and about the vital work they and other sex worker rights groups are doing to protect and advocate for sex workers around the country. And we talk about what allies can do to support sex workers in the era of SESTA-FOSTA.    Additional links/info below...
