In this second week of School's Out for Summer month, we're going to summer camp with our guest Etta Goodridge! Directed by David Wain, written by Wain and Michael Showalter, and featuring many other members of MTV's The State sketch comedy series, Wet Hot American Summer has become a cult classic, with a huge cast of actors that have gone on to become major stars, including Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Christopher Meloni, and Elizabeth Banks. We discuss our own experiences with camp, the hilarious screenplay which employs mounting absurdity as it builds toward the thrillingly improbable climax, how we relate to the dual protagonists Cooper and Beth (played by Showalter and Janeane Garofalo, respectively), the magical alchemy that results in doing comedy with friends, and the importance of a good montage. Grab your bug spray and hike up to Camp Firewood with us!

It dawned on us that we haven't been representing the current season as much as we did in years prior. So since it's summer...Cage & Maeve decided to take a trip to one of the wildest summer camps in film, Camp Firewood! Any camp counseled by, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, and Elizabeth Banks is always bound to be a wild time.
Taylor and Kevin continue Summer of Splat by heading to Camp Firewood for some arts and farts and crafts as well as a movie night under the stars featuring the 2001 comedy Wet Hot American Summer.
Return with us to Camp Firewood for the 20th anniversary of the cult classic directed by David Wain and starring Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Michael Showalter, Marguerite Moreau, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Amy Poehler, and Bradley Cooper. We discuss the history of summer camps in America, the universality of summer camp experiences, and riffs on camp movies and summer crowd-pleasers. Plus, Allen does not know the lyrics for Jason Mraz's "The Remedy," Ben doesn't know who won at the 1980 Summer Olympics, and as always, we run down our favorite American moments. And Allen shares a heartfelt tribute to the late Norm Macdonald. Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle
Some movies land with audiences immediately, while others don't find their fans for years to come. Wet Hot American Summer is one of the latter. Featuring a star-studded cast of comedy talents, director David Wain's film is a quirky ode to '80s "camp" classics (pun intended) and sex comedies. Its popularity grew so much over the years that Netflix ultimately produced two limited series based on the film. David Rosen of the Piecing It Together podcast joins the show to discuss the phenomenon that is Wet Hot American Summer. We'll discuss Wain's bizarre blend of comedy styles, the film's enduring legacy, and speculate about why it was initially maligned by critics. Fans of David's show: we'll even briefly touch on which puzzle pieces pertain to the film. So let's head over to Camp Firewood so that we don't miss tonight's big talent show. *pottery breaking* SYNOPSIS Set on the last day of camp, in the hot summer of 1981, Wet Hot American Summer follows a group of counselors who are each trying to complete their unfinished business before the day ends. The entire summer of pent-up sexual frustrations, unresolved post-traumatic stress, pending separations and of course, the talent show, all weigh heavily on the minds and groins of counselors and campers alike. An unofficial spin-off of the MTV sketch comedy show "The State", this movie features some of today's most brilliant comedic actors in a much younger form. We visit Camp Firewood for the last day of camp in the summer of 1981 as imagined by David Wain, Michael Showalter, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and more. Nick sure did love this movie in 2001 - and nobody else in the group has seen it. Is it any good? Will we be excited about the Netflix prequel series "Wet Hot American Summer: The First Day of Camp" set to release on July 31? Let's Rewatch and find out. Starring Nick Keller, Ash Blodgett, Bret Eagleston, Samantha Willson, and Bryce Poole
Join Coop, Andy, McKinley and the rest of the gang for one more wet hot summer at Camp Firewood. It's 1981 and the last day of camp. Everyone's looking to meet that special someone for one more fling before they part ways. Coop's got his eye on Katie, a girl with whom he is trapped in the friend zone. Camp Director Beth has got her eye on the hot nerdy astrophysicist who oddly doesn't work at the camp but lives within a very close proximity of it. Will anyone find love? Maybe. Will anyone leave camp, get addicted to heroin, kick the habit and return to camp all within the span of an hour? Count on it. Returning listener Aaron brings this true cult classic to In the Queue and you are all invited to bask in it's awesomeness.
