On season 10 episode 3 of Paid in Puke, we're playing with Matt Betinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett's 2019 horror comedy, “Ready or Not” starring Samara Weaving, Andi McDowell, Adam Brody, and Mark O'Brien. It was written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy. Olpin and Gilette also joined Busick for "Abigail", the 2022 Scream reboot, and "Scream VI". “Ready or Not” tells the story of Grace, a plucky woman from a modest background, who learns, on the night of her wedding to the heir of a board game empire, that she must play a life-or-death game of Hide and Seek with her new in-laws. It's Keggers with Kids all this episode, as Amy's child, Dash, joins us to talk about why this is one of his favorite horror films, and how it stacks up against Betinelli-Olpin and Gillett's other films. The "Ready or Not" script is a rare example of tight perfection, symmetry, and depth that also manages to walk a horror comedy tightrope. It belongs to a fun micro-genre: Evil People in a Mansion. We also praise Samara Weaving for the fun vibe she brings to her scream queen role, Adam Brody's recent renaissance, and why we've been on the Brody train since David Wain's underrated comedy, "The Ten".

On this podcast we discuss the first season of Mr. Throwback, a mockumentary-style comedy featuring Adam Pally as Danny Grossman, a former middle school basketball star turned sports memorabilia dealer, now seeking to repay a $90,000 debt. His desperate plan? Reconnect with his old teammate, Steph Curry, who plays a fictionalized version of himself. The series mixes humor, awkward encounters, and sports nostalgia, with Ego Nwodim playing Kimberly, Curry's no-nonsense manager. Directed by David Wain, Mr. Throwback blends elements of classic mockumentaries with the absurdity of Danny's schemes, all while maintaining a connection to Curry's real-life persona. Tune in to hear our thoughts. Welcome to Today's Episode!

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys whose work I've admired for decades, but who I never realized were as close as they are personally: David Wain and Craig Wedren. Wain is a writer-director-actor (and more) who first came to fame with the hilarious sketch-comedy group The State, whose mid-'90s MTV show was and is a cult sensation—and still holds up to this day. Proof of that: The State has been doing reunion shows recently, and today's podcast was inspired by the fact that I saw today's other guest, Craig Wedren, in the audience for their recent Chicago show. After The State, Wain went on to direct a bunch of hilarious movies, including Wet Hot American Summer, Wanderlust and Role Models. He's also done lots of acting, and way more stuff than I can list here in a reasonable amount of time. On top of that, he started the just-for-fun, cheekily named Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, whose core also includes State alumnus Ken Marino and lots of big special guests. The Jam band will be playing at SF Sketchfest, which starts today, with tons of other great acts, including… The State. Craig Wedren started his career as the singer of Shudder to Think, the DC-based band of art-rockers whose early records came out on Dischord. After that band split up—which had something to do with Wedren being diagnosed with a pretty serious cancer in his mid-20s—he switched his focus to scoring and soundtrack work, at which he has undoubtedly succeeded. He's made music for tons of TV and film, including many of Wain's projects. He's also made some fantastic solo albums, including one that's due for release next week called The Dream Dreaming. It's maybe the most accessible thing he's ever done, but as Wain points out in this conversation, accessible music by Craig Wedren is still beautifully odd. Check out “Play Innocent” from The Dream Dreaming. As a huge fan of both Shudder to Think and The State, I'm surprised I didn't realize that Wain and Wedren weren't just professional collaborators, but literally life-long friends. They've known each other since they were about 4, and they started making creative things together not long after that—they get into that history here. In this conversation, they talk about their history together, what they're doing now, the ups and downs of doing it yourself, bath-time tips, and Wedren's health issues over the years, including one that just happened. It's a great chat. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Wain and Craig Wedren for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting service, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

For November's theme of COMFORT FOOD we wanted to try and keep it clean. We didn't even come close. Every episode says “fuck” at least 12 times. So many “shits”. There's always a “cunt” popping up randomly. Revisiting and discussing films that meant a lot to our childhood just reminded us that we were also crude as children. So let's get crude with a movie that actually meant a lot early in Bob and Angela's relationship. For years, whenever they would travel and stay in a hotel, they would turn on the hotel room cable and inevitably find the 2008 comedy “Role Models” directed by David Wain and starring Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott amongst several other comedy stalwarts of the day. They couldn't possibly watch anything else once they discovered that “Role Models” was on. Maybe it passed you by? On the surface, it seems indistinguishable from several comedies throughout the 2000s. While there are tropes, we feel that this one stands out pleasantly. These types of comedies have quietly faded from the current movie theater landscape. People might claim “woke” is to blame but the reality is that those brands of comedies just got very stale. They were beat into the ground. All the quirky jokes are in superhero and fantasy movies now and that's also starting to feel quite stale. The future of comedy at the movies has yet to really reveal itself and it will have to be something fresh and unique to catch the spark again. Anyway…”Role Models” is kinda funny. Check it out. (It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name).  The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power.  Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats!  Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. To maintain your courage and stay grounded in the truth, check out the Gaslit Nation Action Guide. You can also join Andrea, J. And even back then, the residents of Staten Island didn't much like being forced to take immigrants who they didn't particularly want,” Anbinder told me. “We tend to idealize our own immigrant ancestors and think they're different than immigrants today. But what you find when you look at the 400-year history of immigrant New York is that every generation of immigrants comes to New York for the same reasons, has the same experiences, is hated by the people who are already in New York, and yet always they end up succeeding. And so every group is despised for a time, but every group ends up becoming an accepted New Yorker. We just forget that, generation after generation after generation.” Source:The Biggest Lesson of the Migrant Crisis https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/09/the-biggest-lesson-of-the-migrant-crisis.html

That's their side hustle. This week we talk the lovely, hilarious and brilliant Elizabeth Banks. Her main gig as an actor starts us off with WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER (2001), where she appears in one of her first film roles, in one of the best comedy ensembles ever. Featuring one of the best montages ever (Go to town!) and the best double take ever (Paul Rudd), Summer is written by David Wain and Michael Showalter, who also directs,  of The State. If you have not seen Wet Hot American Summer before listening, please do. It's short and it has become a stone cold cult classic that had a prequel AND sequel series on Netflix (both of which are also great). As director we could have gone Charlie's Angels but we decided on COCAINE BEAR (2023) instead, because we  rarely talk about new movies. What is Cocaine Bear? It's in the title. THE SAME SONG OPENS BOTH MOVIES, FYI, clearly intentional on Banks' part. One of the best marketing plans in recent film but how is the actual movie? It can't be as good as the trailers, right? Listen and find out. We are joined once again by Southern Belle and Streep Mega-Fan Andi for both films.
