Editor - Robert Nassau A REAL PAIN editor Robert Nassau might be Brooklyn's secret cinematic weapon when it comes to finding an editor who knows how to cut not-too-dark dramedies. And the seems to be what writer/director/actor Jesse Eisenberg was looking for when it came time to turn over the cutting room keys to his latest project. Premiering to much fanfare at Sundance 2024, A Real Pain is now delighting critics and audiences alike in its theatrical run. A REAL PAIN follows mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) as they reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. Robert Nassau Robert Nassau edited the films The Big Sick (directed by Michael Showalter), A Futile and Stupid Gesture (David Wain), Hello, My Name is Doris (Showalter), Juliet, Naked (Jesse Peretz), The Lovebirds (Showalter), Shortcomings (Randall Park), Somewhere in Queens (Ray Romano) and Wanderlust (Wain). Television series include “Children's Hospital” (Adult Swim), “Dash and Lily”(Netflix),“The Last O.G.”(Comedy Central),“The Other Two”(Max), and“Wet Hot American Summer” (Netflix). For two summers in high school, he worked at the National Zoo. He is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design. Editing A REAL PAIN In our discussion with A REAL PAIN editor Robert Nassau, we talk about: Chopin up the score Not coming to a resolution with music Following the St. Crispin's Day rule for monologues Finding the line between annoying and outgoing Sometimes all a scene really needs is a cricket The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Check out what's new with Avid Media Composer Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube
These two films map so brilliantly onto one another. They are neither of them quite what we would call a rom com but, in both cases, for interesting reasons. A Family Affair Year: 2024 Written by: Carrie Solomon Directed by: Richard LaGravenese Stars: Nicole Kidman, Zac Effron, Joey King The Idea of You Year: 2024 Screenplay by: Michael Showalter and Jennifer Westfeldt Novel by: Robinne Lee Directed by: Michael Showalter Stars: Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galatzine, Ella Rubin Show notes: “Maybe you're an amazing duck” - Lisa Findley's message for Zac Efron. By the way, we don't mean to dismiss or belittle anyone who is in their early twenties (or younger). We are in our forties. It feels like a long time ago. If you would like to skip the plot summary for this month's film you can spool forward about fourteen and a quarter minutes into the episode. In this episode we mention the films: High School Musical (2006) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475293/) Born On The Fourth Of July (1989) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096969/) Mission: Impossible (1996) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117060/) The Break-up (2006) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452594/) Red, White & Royal Blue* (2023) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10172266/) *This film has previously been featured on the podcast. Correction: Harry Styles was just 16 years old in 2010 when he auditioned for the TV show The X Factor, which lead to him becoming part of One Direction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Styles). Robbie Williams was also 16 when he joined Take That in 1990 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robbie_Williams). Next month we are going to watch Going The Distance (2010) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1322312/). If you would like to suggest films for future episodes, you can tweet Lisa: @LisaStowaway. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit upheld the dismissal of Corner Post's lawsuit challenging a Federal Reserve regulation, ruling that the six-year statute of limitations to challenge the rule had already expired. However, Corner Post did not exist until more than six years after the rule issued, and it filed suit less than four years after opening for business. The New Civil Liberties Alliance has filed an amicus curiae brief in Corner Post, Inc. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, urging the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the lawsuit to go forward in such circumstances and protect judicial review. In this episode, Mark and Vec discuss the case and a recent article by Michael Showalter in the Federalist Society Review. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today's episode we're chatting about The Idea Of You, Amazon Prime's hit romcom directed by Michael Showalter from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jennifer Westfeldt, based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee. Based on the number of viewers in its first two weeks on Prime Video it has become Amazon MGM's No. 1 romantic-comedy debut of all time! So the hype is certainly there, but we have some real questions, especially as readers of the book…a book that explored ageism, sexism and female agency. Director Michael Showalter discusses his new film, The Idea of You, with fellow Director Kay Cannon in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, he discusses the in-depth process of casting the Hayes character, working with a songwriter who writes for real pop bands to make a full soundtrack, and taking care to craft a realistic story that respects the genre. The film tells the story of Solène, who while chaperoning her daughter at Coachella, finds instant chemistry with the lead singer of a popular boyband. But while their whirlwind romance creates an undeniable spark, it isn't long before his superstar status causes challenges, and Solène discovers life in the spotlight may be more than she bargained for.
It's timeeeeeeeeee!!!! Today I'm joined by contributing editor at Vogue and freelance journalist, Michelle Ruiz, to recap the movie adaptation of our shared favourite book, Robinne Lee's “The Idea Of You”. I first heard of Michelle when she wrote an article for Vogue back in 2020 about my favourite book. Since then, we've both been anxiously awaiting the release of the book's screen adaptation, a movie now available to stream on Prime Video starring Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, and directed by Michael Showalter. I am THRILLED to have Michelle on the show today to dive deep into both of our POVs on this adaptation. As (very) passionate fans of the book, you can imagine we have some critiques. Thank you for listening to the FOLLOWING FILMS Podcast. Today we have two interviews for you. First I'm joined by Michael Showalter director of THE IDEA OF YOU and after the break I'm joined by Simon Cellan Jones director of ARTHUR THE KING. Based on the acclaimed, contemporary love story of the same name, The Idea of You centers on Solène (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who begins an unexpected romance with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, an incredibly popular boy band. In ARTHUR THE KING, an unbreakable bond is forged between pro adventure racer Michael Light and a scrappy street dog companion dubbed Arthur over the course of a grueling 10-day, 435-mile racecourse. An inspiring story for the whole family based on true events, ARTHUR THE KING follows Light, desperate for one last chance to win, as he convinces a sponsor to back him and a team of athletes for the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic. Pushing the team to the outer limits of endurance and sacrifice, Arthur redefines what victory, loyalty, and friendship truly mean. cellan --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support

On the podcast this time, Steven and Sean are here for their loved ones, no matter what it takes for them. We watched the 2022 film from Michael Showalter, Spoiler Alert.Love defies anything and everything. It can surprise you. It can excite you. It can lift you out of the deepest wells of sorrow, despair, and hopelessness. It's safe to say that it'll always be there for you if you let it into your life. For Michael Ausiello and Kit Cowan, it was the force that brought them together, and then kept them from splitting apart during the worst moments of both of their lives. When Kit begins to die from inoperable cancer, love made their final moments together worth the pain they endured. We hope you enjoy this great movie and the meaningful conversation we had after watching it.(Early in the episode, Sean makes a passing remark about years in a gay relationship equating to a “normal” relationship. He apologizes for the ignorant remark. There's always a lot of work for straight people to do and he's trying to be better.)(Recorded on November 01, 2023)Links to Stuff We Mentioned:Spoiler Alert - The Movie Database (TMDB)Spoiler Alert trailer - YouTubeJim Parsons — The Movie Database (TMDB)Ben Aldridge — The Movie Database (TMDB)Sally Field — The Movie Database (TMDB)Bill Irwin — The Movie Database (TMDB)Scrubs (TV Series 2001–2010) — The Movie Database (TMDB)TV Guide - WikipediaGilmore Girls (TV Series 2000–2007) — The Movie Database (TMDB)I Love You, Man (2009) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Michael Ausiello - WikipediaThe Big Bang Theory (TV Series 2007–2019) — The Movie Database (TMDB)Follow Us:Give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts! Our Buzzsprout site! Our Instagram profile! Our Twitter profile!Support the show
From his first viewing at the Angelika as a freshman at NYU, Joan Micklin Silver's 1988 rom-com Crossing Delancey blew Michael Showalter's mind. In this episode Michael shares how and why the movie made a lasting mark and how it continues to influence his work today. Adapted by Susan Sandler from her play of the same title, this is the story of Izzy Grossman (Amy Irving), a nice Jewish girl with roots in Manhattan's Lower East Side but now living uptown with literary-adjacent aspirations. Sam Posner (Peter Reigart) is a purveyor of pickles, with a shop down the street from Izzy's grandmother's apartment. We learn how the film's spot-on portrayal of 1980s city living with characters who exist in coffee shops and bars and bookstores, and apartments, resonated with the life 18-year-old Michael imagined for himself. As he unpacks what makes this a rom-com classic, co-hosts Cooper and Tabitha spark a debate around the off-screen future for Sam and Izzy, and where they might be today. Hosted on Acast. (It also inspired the Adam Curtis docuseries by the same name). The term describes the final years of the Soviet Union when the system was failing, everyone knew the system was rotted from within by greed and corruption, yet people carried on, the broken system becoming the new normal. When our government can easily be shutdown by a Kremlin-backed, proudly fascist party, while its leader continues to call for violence, walking free after having tried to violently overthrow our government, and disinformation echo chambers on the far-right and far-left openly mock and attack the victims and targets of that fascism, America has reached HyperNormalisation. And the priority of the business elite is to protect their immorally low-tax rate and hoard their wealth, following in the footsteps of those who helped bring Hitler and Pinochet to power. Elon Musk's X has become the biggest outlet of Russian disinformation, according to the EU. That's “mission accomplished” for the American far-right and its Russian backers. Formerly reliable so-called “resistance” accounts on Twitter that once led the way combating Trump and Putin have succumbed to self-censorship and catering to Musk's oppressive algorithms like they're an authoritarian regime. This causes them to fall silent on ringing the alarm on the stakes to all of us for stopping Russia's genocide in Ukraine, LGBTQ+ rights that are being scapegoated through genocidal rhetoric, and more. You know things are bad when even Ralph Nader is ringing the alarm of fascism and wants to campaign for the Democrats! Since the beginning of the show, the focus has been on grassroots power–the most reliable power we have left. Together, we made 15,000 phone calls to get John Fetterman into the Senate, and he's leading the way against corruption and greed. But what you find when you look at the 400-year history of immigrant New York is that every generation of immigrants comes to New York for the same reasons, has the same experiences, is hated by the people who are already in New York, and yet always they end up succeeding. And so every group is despised for a time, but every group ends up becoming an accepted New Yorker. We just forget that, generation after generation after generation.” Source:The Biggest Lesson of the Migrant Crisis https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/09/the-biggest-lesson-of-the-migrant-crisis.html
