Tune in as filmmaker Joshua R. Pangborn (Sidekick Productions) returns to the podcast for a breakdown of Marvel's Agent Carter, the two-season MCU TV show that premiered in 2015 and follows secret agent Peggy Carter as she embarks on espionage missions with the help of a few allies while wrestling with the daily challenges and misogyny that come with living as a single woman in the 1940s. A disability depiction that's handled respectfully enough for the mid-2010s, a character's military backstory sending Arthur into a rant, and a non-irritating usage of the love triangle trope comprise a few of this episode's talking points. Created by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Agent Carter stars Hayley Atwell, James D'Arcy, Chad Michael Murray, Enver Gjokaj, Shea Whigham, Dominic Cooper, Bridget Regan, Lyndsy Fonseca, Ralph Brown, Kyle Bornheimer, Lesley Boone, Reggie Austin, Wynn Everett, Kurtwood Smith, Currie Graham, Lotte Verbeek, Ken Marino, and Sarah Bolger. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two guys whose work I've admired for decades, but who I never realized were as close as they are personally: David Wain and Craig Wedren. Wain is a writer-director-actor (and more) who first came to fame with the hilarious sketch-comedy group The State, whose mid-'90s MTV show was and is a cult sensation—and still holds up to this day. Proof of that: The State has been doing reunion shows recently, and today's podcast was inspired by the fact that I saw today's other guest, Craig Wedren, in the audience for their recent Chicago show. After The State, Wain went on to direct a bunch of hilarious movies, including Wet Hot American Summer, Wanderlust and Role Models. He's also done lots of acting, and way more stuff than I can list here in a reasonable amount of time. On top of that, he started the just-for-fun, cheekily named Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, whose core also includes State alumnus Ken Marino and lots of big special guests. The Jam band will be playing at SF Sketchfest, which starts today, with tons of other great acts, including… The State. Craig Wedren started his career as the singer of Shudder to Think, the DC-based band of art-rockers whose early records came out on Dischord. After that band split up—which had something to do with Wedren being diagnosed with a pretty serious cancer in his mid-20s—he switched his focus to scoring and soundtrack work, at which he has undoubtedly succeeded. He's made music for tons of TV and film, including many of Wain's projects. He's also made some fantastic solo albums, including one that's due for release next week called The Dream Dreaming. It's maybe the most accessible thing he's ever done, but as Wain points out in this conversation, accessible music by Craig Wedren is still beautifully odd. Check out “Play Innocent” from The Dream Dreaming. As a huge fan of both Shudder to Think and The State, I'm surprised I didn't realize that Wain and Wedren weren't just professional collaborators, but literally life-long friends. They've known each other since they were about 4, and they started making creative things together not long after that—they get into that history here. In this conversation, they talk about their history together, what they're doing now, the ups and downs of doing it yourself, bath-time tips, and Wedren's health issues over the years, including one that just happened. It's a great chat. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to David Wain and Craig Wedren for chatting. Dan and Tony, dive headfirst into the holiday movie madness. We're dishing out our unfiltered thoughts on Eddie Murphy's "Candy Cane Lane" and the face-palm-worthy "The Family Switch" while inviting you to join us in the joy of critiquing the festive season's cinematic offerings.Who knew that soda could have a starring role in film promotions? We'll walk you through Truly's unexpected foray into movie marketing, followed by musings on the treasures and trappings of Christmas collectibles. Eddie Murphy's venture into a deeper, less comedic role in the holiday genre sparks a heartfelt discussion around the evolving nature of Christmas celebrations. We'll share personal stories and observations on how this once sacred holiday is now wrapped in the bright, shiny foil of commercialism.Wrapping things up with a nod to Ken Marino's questionably legal holiday decorations, we'll tickle your funny bone with elf jokes and the comedic gold of geese laying more than just eggs. We even tackle the undying debate about 'Die Hard' being a Christmas film and bring ornament characters to life in our reviews. In this week's essential episode of the BFG podcast, Neal Pollack welcomes not one, but two Gallaga brothers into the pod dome to talk about the culture. First up, Pablo Gallaga, who reviewed 'John Wick: Chapter 4' for us. Pablo felt like the movie took a little long to get going. But once it gets going, it contains some legendary set pieces that will remain iconic as long as the projectors roll in theaters. "If you like action movies, you're not going to do better this year than John Wick 4," Neal says. Truth!Omar Gallaga had the tougher assignment of writing and talking about 'Swarm,' the serial killer comedy-drama on Amazon Prime from executive producer Donald Glover. The first two episodes premiered at SXSW to enthusiastic response, but when the final episodes appeared, the praise muted down to a whisper. The world is ready for a Black female serial killer character. But some of the late episodes revealed pathologies that you could kindly refer to as "problematic." Omar suggests watching the first two episode and then proceeding at your own risk. And he has nothing but praise for star Dominque Fishback. But unlike in 'Swarm,' we aren't Stans. We are critics. And sometimes our judgement is harsh. However, we reserve nothing but love for the third season of 'Party Down,' the catering comedy that's back on Stars after a hiatus of more than a decade. Adam Scott and Ken Marino are back serving the wealthy of the L.A. metropolitan area, with typically sad and hilarious results. Contributor William Schwartz stops by to discuss the show with Neal, pointing out that Parks and Recreation, the show that poached Adam Scott from Party Down, has vanished into the mists of pop-culture time, its stars onto bigger things. But Party Down keeps going, and is still relevant. There will always be failure and disappointment in life,. Party Down celebrates the people who didn't quite make it big.Enjoy the show!

This week's Nose has never asked the men for anything. Not a single thing. Women Talking is an adaptation of Miriam Toews's 2018 novel written and directed by Sarah Polley. It's Polley's fourth feature film as writer and director. Polley is nominated for the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, and the film is nominated for Best Picture. It's the story of the women of an isolated religious community choosing their path forward: do nothing, stay and fight, or leave. Women Talking stars Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, and more. And: The Consultant is, so far, an eight-episode comedy-thriller series from Prime Video. Ken Marino knows that he's often called upon to play one of two archetypes. From his earliest days as a member of his NYU sketch group The State to his roles in films like ‘Wet Hot American Summer' and ‘Wanderlust' and TV shows like ‘Eastbound and Down' and ‘The Other Two,' he mostly swings between insecure buffoon and “straight-up asshole.” But no character better captures his particular comedic gifts than Ron Donald of ‘Party Down,' which returns this week for its long-awaited third season—13 years after it was canceled. In this episode, Marino talks about what it was like to reunite with Adam Scott, Jane Lynch and the rest of the ‘Party Down' crew and what fans can expect from the new batch of episodes. He also reflects on the biggest moments of his career, including almost losing out on his roles in ‘Party Down' and ‘Wet Hot' to Steve Carell and Sam Rockwell, respectively, the decision to take things into his own hands as a screenwriter with movies like ‘Role Models' and how he views his place in the comedy world after 30 years on screen. Many of Wallace's horror/thriller scores heavily use custom sound design created through the manipulation and mutilation of organic sound sources, creating a distinct, other-worldly yet natural sound.Wallace graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2008) and the University of Southern California's prestigious Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television (SMPTV) program in 2009, going on to assist film scoring icon Christopher Young (DRAG ME TO HELL, SPIDER-MAN 3).
