In 1973, the three astronauts aboard Skylab 4 staged NASA's first (and only) space mutiny, rebelling against an overwhelming workload and mission control's rigid oversight. For one dramatic day, they cut off communications, taking time to enjoy the view of Earth and reset their own schedule. When contact was reestablished, tensions ran high—but what happened next changed how NASA handled astronaut workloads forever. Get "Star Bound" (Amazon Affiliate): https://amzn.to/4hvHtXo Headlines - Trump's Mars Vision: The administration's push for a crewed Mars mission by 2029 sparks debate. Tariq notes Elon Musk's visible enthusiasm, while Rod highlights the technical and political hurdles. - NASA Leadership Shuffle: Janet Petro named interim NASA administrator, bypassing Jim Free. The move might signal potential shifts in Artemis priorities. - DEI Rollbacks: Executive orders halt NASA's diversity initiatives, sparking workforce concerns. - SpaceX Milestones: 400th Falcon 9 landing celebrated, with 60 Starlink satellites launched in a week. ULA's Vulcan launch remains delayed. - Meteorite Doorbell Footage: A meteorite impact in Canada, captured on camera, stuns scientists and homeowners. - Quirky Moon Naming: IAU dubs a quasi-moon "Cardea" after the Roman goddess of door hinges. Main Topic: Star Bound - Book Overview: A cultural history of the U.S. space program, connecting missions like Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab to societal shifts (e.g., civil rights movements). Authors Emily Carney and Bruce McCandless III emphasized accessibility, avoiding "engineer-speak." - Skylab's Legacy: Emily's passion shines as she details Skylab's role as a bridge between Apollo and the Shuttle, citing the groundbreaking science performed and how it may help us send humans to Mars. - MMU & Bruce McCandless II: Bruce shares stories of his father's iconic untethered flight with the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), suggesting that future missions may revive jetpack tech for tourism and repairs. - Shuttle Era Love/Hate: Both guests defend the Shuttle's cultural impact (e.g., Judy Resnik's inspiring legacy) while acknowledging its flaws. - Conspiracy Corner: The duo laughs over wild theories (STS-1 being flown by clones; Neil Armstrong being a robot) and praises Rod's 2016 book "Amazing Stories of the Space Age" for documenting Project Orion's nuclear explosive propulsion tech. - Future of Space: The book ends at today's "precipice"—Artemis delays, Mars hype, and private ventures. Bruce predicts jetpacks and hotels; Emily urges newcomers to embrace space history's messy, human side. Don't Miss: - Emily's Space Hipsters Facebook group for lively space discussions. - Bruce's website (brucemccandless.com) with book sources and WWII project teasers. This is the third interview in Com d'Archi with architects or engineers working in the United States. From the practice of the daring Frenchman Jean-Michel Humbert, based in Washington, to that of the great engineer Eric Long, of one of the most important architectural firms in the world, SOM, and now Jeff Kovel, architect and founder of Skylab Architecture, who delivered the fascinating world headquarters of the sports brand Nike in 2022. Both of them work from the West Coast of the USA. It is very interesting to see how the American architect sees the way to build today and on a large scale, in the context of climate challenges.I know that the most informed of Com d'archi's listeners, and not the least, have already fully appreciated the opportunity that these unpublished testimonies represent in France in order to understand the different ways of apprehending the practice: differences in scale and energy, network logics, etc. I would like to take this opportunity to invite all our listeners, whether they are lay people or experts, new or faithful to the program, to push their curiosity and listen to this new testimony! They will not be disappointed.Did you know that Nike has just delivered its world headquarters in Portland? This project covers an area of 140 tennis courts. How can such an achievement meet the ecological challenges of our era? That's what we're going to talk about today through the testimony of the founder Jeff Kovell of the architectural firm Skylab who designed this building, with the great Serena Williams associated to the creation process, as well as the executives and teams of the American giant Nike. But not only because Jeff Kovel, in his life, also crossed the singer Lenny Kravitz and designed without knowing it the house of the series Twilight became cult! Herb Baker, NASA veteran and author of From Apollo to Artemis: Stories From My 50 Years With NASA, takes us back to a time where growing up near NASA meant working near the “Manned Spacecraft Center,”  and running films to the TV station for Apollo missions.  Herb took what started as a “fun job” into an unforgettable 42-year career working on the Shuttle, Space Station, and Orion programs. Herb grew up surrounded by astronauts' families, watched history happen right in his backyard, and even got to see his mom play a key role in saving Skylab—a story that will absolutely make you smile. Herb's adventures working for NASA are pretty incredible—like riding in a helicopter flown by a Vietnam vet to deliver news footage, running around Mission Control like he owned the place, and learning that astronauts' biggest fear isn't danger... it's letting their teammates down. You'll hear just how much NASA's mission and people have meant to him. Herb's stories bring NASA's history to life in a way that feels personal, real, and so inspiring. If you've ever looked up at the stars and dreamed big, this one's for you.     Guest Bio: Herb Baker retired from NASA in 2017 after 42 years of service. He spent most of his career at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), supporting the Space Shuttle, Space Station, and Orion Programs. Herb also worked at the Kennedy Space Center and NASA Headquarters. His final position was Manager of the Operations Support Office at JSC, where he oversaw support for Mission Control, astronaut operations, and NASA's aircraft operations. Today, Herb serves as an Officer on the Board of Directors for the NASA Alumni League-JSC and dedicates his time to promoting STEM education through organizations like the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation and Space Center Houston. Hi Guys, welcome back to TV Reload. Thank you for clicking or downloading on today's episode with Jesse Spencer and Radha Mitchell two very iconic Australian actors who are currently featured in the Disney Plus series The Last Days of the Space Age…. Jessie is actually an old friend I had lost touch with so I don't think he knew I was going to be chatting with him today…. Kind of nice that he remembered me and didn't think oh god this guy!   This new series is set in Australia 1979, where a power strike threatens to plunge a  Western Australian town into darkness, while the city hosts the Miss Universe pageant and the US space station, Skylab, crashes just beyond the city's suburbs. It is a tapestry of characters and I hope you go and check it out.  I will ask about Jesse and Rahda's relationship with Disney growing up? You will hear about their upbringing and if their parents ever encouraged them to go to space Rahda will talk about how far we have come in terms of equality between men and women in Australia. Plus you will even find out about their accents and if their time spent overseas, particularly in the US for Jessie made it hard in any way to sound Australian again. There is so much to unpack with these guys it is short and sweet but there still are some fantastic secrets along the way. So sit back and relax as we unpack The last Days of the Space Age.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Bringing the International Space Station down safely: A Billion dollar waste?, published by NickLaing on September 15, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic status: Uncertain, shooting from the hip a little with no expertise in this area and only a couple of hours research done. I might well have missed something obvious, in which case I'll revise or even take the post down. Money Waste is Everywhere Here in Northern Uganda where poverty abounds, many expenditures feel wasteful. Last night I had a great time at the fanciest restaurant in town with friends but felt a pang of guilt about my $7 meal. Enough of a pang to avoid telling my wife after I came home. A bigger scale waste in these parts is the partial closure of the main bridge across the river Nile, because the bridge has apparently degraded and become hazardous. Vehicles larger than a minivan now can't cross, which has raised the price of public transport by 50% and trucks now have a 3 hour detour. Besides these direct costs, this closure increases the cost of fuel and commodities in Northern Uganda. By my loose, conservative BOTEC the closure costs $10,000 every day (1.2 million dollars in 4 months so far) which Ugandans now can't spend on education and healthcare, while likely causing more crashes due to increasingly tired drivers who now use worse roads. The detour itself may have already cost more lives than would be lost if the bridge does collapse and kills a few people.[1] But there are far bigger wastes of money on this good earth. A Billion Dollars to bring down a space station? Space X have secured an 843 million dollar contract[2] to build the boringly named "U.S. De-Orbit vehicle" (why not "Sky Shepherd")[3], which in 2031 will safely guide the decommissioned International Space Station (ISS) into the Pacific Ocean. This all sounded pretty cool until I thought… is this worth it?. No human has ever been definitively killed by an object falling from space, although there have been a couple of close calls with larger asteroids injuring many while Open Asteroid Impact could be a game changer here in future. This one time though, a wee piece of space junk did hit Lottie Williams in the shoulder and she took it home as a memento. I'm jealous. According to a great Nature article "Unnecessary risks created by uncontrolled rocket reentries", over the last 30 years over 1,000 space bodies have fallen to earth in uncontrolled re-entries and never killed anyone. The closest call might be a Chinese rocket in 2020 which damaged a house in the Ivory Coast. The article predicts a 10% chance of a fatal space junk accident in the next 10 years - far from zero and worth considering, but unlikely to be the next EA cause area. This low risk makes sense given that only 3% of the globe are urban areas and under 1% actually contain human homes[4]- most stuff falls down where there ain't people. Also the bulk of falling spacecraft burns up before hitting the ground. In contrast a million people die from car crashes every year,[5] and each of us has about a 1 in 100 chance of dying that way. Although the ISS is the biggest ever at 450 tons, we do have priors. Two 100 ton uncontrolled re-entries (Skylab and tragically the Columbia) crashed to earth without issue. So what actually is the risk if the ISS was left to crash uncontrolled? The U.S. Government requires controlled re-entry for anything that poses over a 1 in 10,000 risk to human life so this risk must be higher. NASA doesn't give us their risk estimate but only state "The ISS requires a controlled re-entry because it is very large, and uncontrolled re-entry would result in very large pieces of debris with a large debris footprint, posing a significant risk to the public worldwide" [6]. I hesitate to even guesstimate the risk to human life at the ISS falli...

Marcelo Tas entrevista o cantor e compositor carioca Rogerio Skylab, ícone do cenário underground.

"Hello, and welcome to This Day in History. Here's what happened on May 14th. As we count down to this summer's Olympics, we look back on this day 120 years ago, when the first Olympic Games held in the United States, opened in St. Louis, Missouri. The 1904 Games were actually initially awarded to Chicago, Illinois, but were later given to St. Louis to be staged in connection with the St. Louis World Exposition. Like the Second Olympiad, held in Paris in 1900, the St. Louis Games were poorly organized and overshadowed by the World's Fair. Surprising fact? There were few entrants other than Americans in the various events—so U.S. athletes won most competitions and the unofficial team championship.  Also on this day in history: In 1804, Lewis and Clark departed to explore the Northwest; in 1973, America's first space station, Skylab, was launched; and in 1998, Frank Sinatra died." The total solar eclipse is almost here! In this special episode of The LIUniverse, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu bring you both the basics and some more in-depth investigations of how eclipses work, how to see them, and what makes them so unique. This episode includes clips from Chuck's recent public talk at the College of Staten Island to a packed house. So, if you hear some background chatter, it's the audience getting as excited about the eclipse as we are.   Today's joyfully cool cosmic thing is, of course, the eclipse itself! Dr. Liu discusses why total solar eclipses are so rare at any given spot on the planet, and how illustrations of eclipses can miss the mark. While a total eclipse will happen somewhere on Earth every year or two, each is only visible in a narrow band, so to see one you need to get lucky – or travel.   With a path over land stretching from Mazatlán, Mexico (where Dr. Liu saw a previous eclipse in 1991) through Newfoundland, Canada, there are already tens of millions of people in place to see this astronomical wonder this time around. Millions more will travel to join them. Since the Moon's shadow races across the landscape at about 1,000 miles per hour, Chuck likens the visual effect to something out of Lord of the Rings.   Speaking of rings, the “diamond ring effect” and the “Baily's beads” will become visible right before totality as the sun peeks through the Moon's valleys. Chuck and Allen talk about how to protect your eyes so to enjoy these last rays of sun safely.   Dr. Liu shares how best to get yourself into the ~100 mile wide path of totality. One piece of advice: Don't try to battle the traffic driving up on the morning of the 8th!   What if you can't reach totality? Charles explains that 99% of the best parts of an eclipse happen in that last 1% of the eclipse where the Sun becomes completely covered. Don't worry if you can't make it to the path of totality – Charles and Allen share cool stuff you can watch for including a method for calculating the true size of the Moon (link below).   Dr. Liu also explains his idea about how to have the most fun with the eclipse, and why his favorite 2017 eclipse photo isn't a masterpiece.   If you're a fan of the LIUniverse, you know we love questions. At Dr. Liu's recent public talk at the College of Staten Island, he fielded live questions from the audience which we've included here. The first is about a comet called 12P Pons-Brooks that you can spot in the direction of the sun during the eclipse, perhaps just on the edge of visibility with your unaided eye.   The next question is about how we are able to predict eclipses so far in advance. Allen explains how the Babylonians used Lunar eclipses (or “Blood Moons”) as the key to predict Solar eclipses. Allen also adds his own calculations about where else in the solar system you can see a total eclipse – it's often said that the Earth is the only planet where total eclipses happen, but that might only be partially correct. Also, find out where you'd need to park a spaceship to create your own eclipse whenever you want!   Our last question ponders why the Sun throws out such large and bright flares and coronal streamers which become visible as fiery red and ghostly white spikes coming from the Sun during an eclipse. The answer explains how the Sun is like a pot of boiling water, with some fun science terms thrown in for flavor! Can you say “magnetohydrodynamics” three times fast? We conclude the discussion with a little more Solar physics: how we've recently sent a space probe into those very same coronal streamers, and how the Sun is nearing the peak of its 11 year cycle, offering some bonus chances to test out your eclipse glasses.   The LIUniverse wants to help you have the best, safest, and most informed experience for the celestial display of the decade. We hope you enjoy this episode.
