Barry Katz shares his insights on comedy's past, present, and future. Hear his story. More About Barry Katz: Barry Katz is an Emmy and Grammy nominated TV-film-record producer, talent manager, and podcast host. Katz is universally known for representing iconic artists like Louie Anderson, Ken Jeong, Andy Dick, Hasan Minhaj, and Mike Epps, giving the first quality stage time in New York City and Boston to future stars like Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Sarah Silverman, Anthony Clark, Dave Attell, Bobcat Goldthwait, Dana Gould, Timothy Olyphant, Denis Leary, and the late Patrice O'Neal, as well as helping launch the careers of some of the most extraordinary comedy artists in the business—including Dave Chappelle, Nick Swardson, Louie CK, Felipe Esparza, Bill Burr, Frank Caliendo, Marc Maron, Whitney Cummings, Bill Bellamy, Judah Friedlander, Wanda Sykes, Bert Kreischer, Jeff Dye, Jim Gaffigan, Dane Cook, Steve Byrne, Jeffrey Ross, Neil Brennan, and former and present SNL stars Darrell Hammond, Jay Mohr, Melissa Villasenor, Jim Breuer, and Tracy Morgan. Throughout his career, Katz has sold 39 out of 40 stand-up comedy specials he produced and has brokered an unprecedented 100 TV development deals, created 3 television shows, and executive produced over 50 different specials, documentaries, reality shows, and scripted series including the YouTube TV produced Telethon for America (with Natalie Portman, Orlando Bloom, Jennifer Lawrence, Pete Davidson, Alicia Keys, Charlize Theron, Ray Romano, Chelsea Handler, and Jane Fonda), NBC's Whitney, Netflix's The Road Trick, FOX's Action, HBO's Tourgasm, Showtime's Jay Mohr: Happy. And A Lot, History Channel's Houdini: Unlocking the Mystery, TBS's Frank TV, Comedy Central's Whitney Cummings: Money Shot, CBS' Welcome to New York (Letterman's first produced sitcom), HBO's Heidi Fleiss: The Would-be Madam of Crystal, the syndicated Bellamy/Tim Meadows/Jon Lovitz/Vivica Fox sitcom Mr. Box Office, and 7 seasons of the Emmy-nominated NBC series Last Comic Standing. Katz started his involvement in the film business when he helped Chappelle and Neal Brennan (who eventually went on to create Chappelle's Show) sell the cult classic Half Baked to Universal Studios and went on to produce several films after that, including Employee of the Month (starring Jessica Simpson and Cook), Good Luck Chuck (starring Jessica Alba), My Best Friend's Girl (starring Kate Hudson and Alec Baldwin), I Killed JFK (about the only living person in history to admit to killing Kennedy), and Misery Loves Comedy (starring Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Judd Apatow, and Larry David). Katz was the first manager to work with a comedy artist to use social media to accelerate their career, with Dane Cook. At the height of his popularity, he was able to press a button on his computer and sell out 2 shows in one night at Boston Garden and 2 shows in one night at Madison Square Garden for a total of 75,000 tickets sold in less than a week—which had never been done before. In the recording world, he has produced Grammy nominated, multiple gold, platinum, and double platinum albums, while becoming the only manager/producer to debut a comedy album in Billboard's top 5 national charts–twice. In other facets of the business, Katz was one of the driving forces and co-founders of Comedy Dynamics, which has become one of the largest independent comedy production and distribution companies in the world. Additionally, he was involved in the original sale of the Emmy-nominated Comedy Central Roasts to the network, which has become one of the longest running, most profitable, annual specials franchises in the history of TV. https://www.barrykatz.com/
This week we were lucky enough to be able to sit down and chat with two gentlemen who were instrumental in the creation of the music video for "Everyday", Chuck McBride (Director) & Tim Harman (Producer). Chuck and Tim reminisce about how the conceptual ideas for the video were formulated, how they wound up with so many celebrities having cameos in the video, what it was like working with Dave and the band, and what the "When the World Ends" music video was going to look like before it was canned. This was truly an enlightneing and engaging conversation that we learned a lot from, and we hope you all enjoy it as much as we did. Thanks again to Chuck and Tim for their time and their work on this great video. Cheers!

Beginning this Saturday, subway lines "1", "6", "C", "N", and "R" will experience improved service, as the MTA adapts to weekend ridership nearing pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, in yesterday's report, a clarification states the settlement between Newark and New York City doesn't limit the number of homeless families the city can transfer to Newark. Also, Following a shark bite off the Rockaway peninsula, the FDNY will now patrol the coastline every morning throughout the swimming season. Due to a shortage of air traffic controllers, the FAA is permitting airlines to limit flights to New York City airports until October 28th. Finally, the arrival of tens of thousands of migrant newcomers in the city has presented New Yorkers with hard questions about how to respond. But for actor and comedian Judah Friedlander, the unfolding crisis calls for personal action, however small.

“Cougars” (November 29, 2007) As comedically successful as it might be, 30 Rock is a very straight show. That's why our best pick for a queer episode is one where the sexually interesting narrative is the C plot and it ends with Judah Friedlander's Frank convincing himself he can't like guys because he doesn't fit prescribed definition of gay. This episode is ultimately harmless but indicative of some traps later Tina Fey efforts would fall into. But hey — it's got “Muffin Top.” Check out our sponsor, Spaces! Comedian Judah Friedlander is probably best known for his role as Frank Rossitano on NBC's 30 Rock , but his new stand-up series Judah Friedlander: Future President takes a satirical look at America and its complicated place on the world stage. He performed in Atlanta a few weeks ago and joins On Second Thought to share his approach to stand-up.
He is, by his account, "World Champion." Of what? Depends on when you ask. It may be easier to pin down Judah Friedlander's resume as an actor and comedian in movies like Wet Hot American Summer , American Splendor , Meet The Parents and The Wrestler . Or maybe you'd recognize him — and his hats — from NBC's 30 Rock , where he played the slumpy and kind of sleazy Frank Rossitano.
Donny Cates ("Absolute Carnage," "Guardians of the Galaxy") and Judah Friedlander ("American Splendor," "30 Rock") join the show for a New York Comic Con kick-off spectacular at Caveat in New York. Donny talks his inspiration for writing Venom and Guardians, and Judah tells some surprising behind the scenes stories from "American Splendor." And more! So much more! The Project EGG Show: Entrepreneurs Gathering for Growth | Conversations That Change The World
Dani Zoldan is an entrepreneur. Since 19 years old he is most passionate and comfortable when navigating in uncharted waters and have applied that mindset to his numerous business ventures. While in college, he founded the online music company Eargazmic.com. Merging his love of music and computers (they called it computers back then, not technology), he created a website where independent bands and musicians can use the website to promote and sell their music. Each artist had their own web page which consisted of photos, a bio, upcoming tour dates and links to purchase MP3's. He ended up dropping out of New York University to focus on the business full-time but ultimately closing the business in 2003. In 2004, when phone carriers starting utilizing voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and routing their traffic over internet lines instead of phone lines, he decided to experiment with that technology and built an IP connection from his apartment closet (that's closet, as in where you put clothes) to Trinidad & Tobago and successfully was able to make long distance phone calls but paying local (Trinidad) prices. This experiment launched Titan International, which ultimately became a big player in selling wholesale long distance services to phone companies. Verizon, China Telecom, TATA Communications and many phone companies around the world relied on their services. Not stimulated by the telecom business so much anymore, in 2008 he purchased Stand Up NY, the famous comedy club on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Stand Up NY made its name in the 80's and 90's with many of the world's best comics known to frequent the club including Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Robin Williams, Louis CK and Jon Stewart. He purchased the club with one of his best buddy's Gabe Waldman (also an aspiring comic), hired Steve Lewis, (the infamous New York club operator/designer) and gave Stand Up NY a major makeover. Today, the club is home to many current A-listers including Amy Schumer, Michael Che, Pete Davidson and Judah Friedlander. In 2013, with his co-founder Jon Fatigate, we created Stand Up NY Labs, a comedy incubator. They successfully launched several hit podcasts including Tuesdays with Stories, Race Wars, The Jtrain podcast and In the Conversation which can can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and SoundCloud. In 2015 DGital Media, an audio engagement company invested in their company and currently ad-rep their network. At the end of 2016, Stand Up NY launched Skitish Media which creates short, funny, and shareable video content for brands and media agencies. He currently reside on the Upper West Side with my wife Billie, an orthodontist and three children - Bradyn, Sydney and Ryder. Josh Forbes is a funny commercial director, whimsical music video director and helmer of the horror hit "Contracted: Phase II". We chat about the differences among his many disciplines of filmmaking. He also tells the tale of being nominated for Best Rock Video Of The Year for "Shut Up And Dance" by Walk The Moon at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. Yet oddly, the filmmaker was not invited to the VMA's, and was forced to buy a ticket. Apparently, Viacom is strapped for cash. I've posted my favorite Josh Forbes music video, chalk full of comedians we love like Judah Friedlander, Fred Willard, Josh Fadem, John Ennis at jordanbrady.com. I'll be in Dallas, Texas on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 conducting my popular Commercial Directing Bootcamp so sign up today! This episode is 90 fun-filled minutes, give or take. Please like the show on iTunes. thanks, Jordan
We pick up where we left off last week with part 2 of Dean's convo with Judah Friedlander. The World Champion had no cable tv in his youth, but his Dad taught him to always question authority and introduced him to Lenny Bruce albums while his mother introduced him to art. He explains his fascination with race issues and injustices in high school, Chardy the Redneck & the most 'Gangsta' representation of The Ghostbusters ever. Judah also takes us on his road from film school to being cast on the hit series, "30 ROCK", and he explains how a shows budget can trump ratings in television. Then he elaborates on how Ben Stiller booked him for both "MEET THE PARENTS" and "ZOOLANDER" and how he developed THE WORLD CHAMPION. We in the Building, son!
