Coca-Cola is synonymous with Christmas, and the ads featuring its trucks once were an integral part of holiday advertising (they kind of still are).
Sultans of String have just released the second single from their forthcoming album, “Refuge” which is due in the spring of 2020. “The Power of the Land” is a poem by Duke Redbird, now set to music by Sultans of String, with harmonies from indigenous husband and wife duo, Twin Flames. Refuge will feature some incredible musicians from the USA and Canada, many of whom arrived here as recent immigrants and refugees. According to Chris McKhool “The goal of the project is to highlight the extraordinary contributions of those that have arrived here from around the globe, as well as global talents that have been ambassadors for peace. Each one of us has a remarkable story to tell, and we are excited to share the beauty of these collaborations with you, featuring special guests from First Nations, Turkey, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Greece, Syria, Mexico, Portugal, Cuba, and Sudan.” The first single from Refuge, “I Am a Refugee” featured the powerful lyrics and spoken word vocal of Somali Refugee Poet and Multimedia Artist Ifrah Mansour. This is an encore presentation of Alex Rawls' interview with Jimbo Mathus of the Squirrel Nut Zippers. It first appeared late last March as an accidental loosey, and Mathus, the Squirrel Nut Zippers’ Christmas Caravan, and their conversation deserve more attention than they got at the time. The band was at the height of its popularity in 1998 when it recorded Christmas Caravan at the request of their label. Even though no one in the band felt particularly excited by Christmas music, it made a memorable one that includes “Hanging Up My Stockings,” a song written by a band members’ parents. Mathus talks about the experience of recording that album, and recording a Christmas single, “Mardi Gras for Christmas,” in 2018 with the current, New Orleans-based Squirrel Nut Zippers lineup.
The Squirrel Nut Zippers had to make their 1998 holiday album Christmas Caravan, says band member Jimbo Mathus. It was part of the deal when Disney bought the hot band's label, Mammoth Records, so even though no one in the band felt any particular fondness for Christmas music, they wrote and recorded an album anyway in the summer heat in New Orleans at the now-defunct Kingsway Studios. Mathus tells host Alex Rawls about how the band recorded what has come to be a holiday classic despite the odds against its success. It only includes one cover of a holiday favorite--"Sleigh Ride"--and a song written by the drummer's parents. He also tells the story of how some songs have had to change over time, and how the rejuvenated Squirrel Nut Zippers released new Christmas music last season. The conversation was part of a larger one that also discussed Mathus' new album, Incinerator, due out April 5. You'll be able to find that story at MySpiltMilk.com shortly after its release.

We love seasonal music on Folk Roots Radio – what we don’t love is more straight up versions of the same old Christmas songs and carols. Join us on Episode 414 of Folk Roots Radio as we celebrate the season with a selection of music that’s mostly new, independent and definitely interesting. We also include an interview with Chris McKhool, the leader of world music combo, the Sultans Of String, who are taking their “Christmas Caravan” back out on the road this holiday season alongside music from Ian Foster & Nancy Hynes, Rich Krueger, Reg Meuross, Kelly’s Lot, Vi Wickam, Bob Jensen & Tony McManus, Rachael Sage, Mara Levine, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and Eric Gerber. It’s a great episode, and the perfect accompaniment to a glass of your favourite tipple and a mince pie, or two. Check out the full playlist below.
Sultans Of String are taking their Christmas Caravan out on the road again this holiday season, with an extensive tour that takes in B.C. and Ontario and then heads into the US, and depending on the date features some special guests. Christmas Caravan isn’t your typical holiday album – as the band and their guest performers take seasonal music into another realm altogether, with some fine vocals performances, wonderful high octane world beat music and some fabulous virtuoso musicianship. On this tour, the Sultans of String will also be raising money for the United Nations Agency for Refugees (UNHCR) in Canada who provide shelter, food, water, medical care and other life-saving assistance to refugees around the world. Sultans of String leader Chris McKhool joined us again on Folk Roots Radio to chat about the upcoming tour. Check out all their tour dates at http://sultansofstring.com. Music: Sultans of String “Jesous Ahatonhia (Huron Carol) (feat. Crystal Shawanda) and “The Little Swallow/Al Vuelo" (feat. The City of Prague Symphony Orchestra) from “Christmas Caravan” (2017, Self) CDN.
Host Alex Rawls revisits familiar territory when he talks about Toronto and Southern Ontario among other things with Chris McKhool of the Canadian progressive string band Sultans of String, who released a Christmas album, Christmas Caravan, last year. They talk about Turkish strings, "Happy Xmas (War is Over)," and Mario Lanza during Christmas dinner. This week, Alex also talks to New Orleans musician Boyfriend about her affection for The Carpenters and particularly "Merry Christmas Darling," which found a new musical life when it appeared in the 2003 film, Love Actually. You can find the Sultans of String on Facebook and the band's website, and you can hear Boyfriend on her Soundcloud page and find out more about her on her website. If you've got thoughts on this week's episode, please share them on the 12 Songs Facebook page.

Welcome to another hour of festive music for the holidays. We’re calling it "Folk Roots Radio at Christmas" and we’re featuring a selection of mostly new and original holiday music by independent artists, who hope to bring something new to a genre that’s often criticized as being a vapid and uninspiring marketing tool for a consumer culture, that, let’s be honest, goes mad during the holiday season. With that in mind, we’re also including an interview with Chris McKhool, the leader of world music combo, the Sultans of String who talks very enthusiastically and engagingly about their new spin on seasonal music “Christmas Caravan”, which really attempts to bring something new to holiday standards many people see as tired, boring and, let's face it, rather predictable. So here it is. Stoke up the fire, pour yourself some egg nog, settle down in your favourite chair and enjoy! Check out the full playlist on our website at http://folkrootsradio.com.
We're getting into the holiday spirit this week as we welcome Heather Rankin and Sultans of String on the program. Heather Rankin is fresh from the release of Imagine, her solo Christmas collection featuring some holiday favourites and fresh new compositions. She talks about how the John Lennon song that inspired the album's name (and appears as its final track) is fitting for the holidays, how the season contributed to her and her family's musical upbringing, and more. Then, Sultans of String frontman Chris McKhool talks about his band's eclectic new holiday release, Christmas Caravan. We chat about how guest artists like Nikki Yanofsky, Alex Cuba, Crystal Shawanda, and Richard Bona were tapped for the collection, interpreting Christmas classics in various world music styles, and more. Plus, Andrew and Mike discuss their favourite contemporary Christmas releases, which may or may not include a rant on Mariah Carey's classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You."
