Thomas and Frank look back on the movies and TV that defined their 2025, from why Superman hit so hard to how Marvel's three-film run landed with Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and Captain America: Brave New World. They also talk about the stuff that disappointed them, why TV felt like it "won" this year, and the shows they could not stop thinking about, including IT: Welcome to Derry, Alien: Earth, and Andor. To close it out, they shift into 2026 mode: what's got them genuinely excited again, which upcoming releases feel like "event" movies, and how they want to evolve Challenge Accepted next year by being more personal and more present on social. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 – Welcome back, what this episode covers (2025 favorites + 2026 hype) 00:33 – Thomas check-in and the newborn update 01:32 – The baby's first Marvel movie (yes, really) 03:31 – Quick run through the 2025 movie list 03:55 – Why Superman was the movie of the year 04:02 – F1 as the surprise hit 07:15 – What worked in Superman (comic-book storytelling and trusting the audience) 10:56 – "I needed that movie this year" 11:03 – Marvel's 2025 slate starts: Brave New World, Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts 11:56 – Why Thunderbolts is the one that felt different 18:12 – Sinners and the hunger for original stories 22:25 – Weapons (and the conversation spirals into other watchlist picks) 24:56 – K-Pop Demon Hunters love and why it clicked 28:38 – Disappointments and missed watches, including Star Trek: Section 31 30:24 – "TV shows dominate" and why this year proved it 30:53 – TV highlights sprint: Welcome to Derry, Stranger Things, Daredevil, Alien: Earth, and more 32:04 – Andor praise and why the release format worked 35:01 – Frank's top TV list: Chief of War, Paradise, Player Base 36:03 – Alien: Earth reactions (including the ending debate) 37:08 – Next year's challenge (Fargo Season 4) 39:10 – Revisiting Marvel 2025: what each movie represents and what Marvel should learn 41:33 – The big disappointment: Chair Company (plus Ironheart) 45:03 – Quick plug: Survivor 49 coverage and Survivor 50 excitement 46:11 – 2026 hype begins: Supergirl and the DCU momentum 50:02 – The Odyssey and why it feels like an "event" movie 51:15 – Marvel needs to "earn" the hype again 52:51 – Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and why it could be huge 53:16 – Rapid fire 2026 watchlist: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Project Hail Mary, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple 55:01 – Why seeing Spider-Man filmed "for people" matters 55:55 – The Mandalorian and Grogu as a real theatrical Star Wars moment 57:54 – What they want to improve on Challenge Accepted next year 58:40 – Social media mindset: be natural, be present, stop over-polishing 59:52 – Outro + how to send in your challenge Key Takeaways Superman landed because it played like an actual comic-book story and trusted the audience to keep up. Marvel's 2025 trio felt like three different "versions" of the brand, and Thunderbolts was the one that showed the most heart and restraint. Sinners is a great example of why original stories can still feel like a must-watch cultural moment. 2025 was stacked for TV, and the list of standouts is honestly longer than most years' movie lists. Andor remains the gold standard for prestige franchise storytelling, and the release strategy helped it stick. 2026 looks like it could swing back to a movie-forward year with multiple "event" releases on the calendar. They want the show to feel more personal in 2026, including more natural social posts and more listener involvement. Quotes "Talking about you, some of our favorite movies and shows from 2025 and what we're hyped for in 2026." "Yeah it was I needed that movie this year. Like I needed it." "They gave a director a chance to tell their story." "Right now, welcome to dairy. Holy cow. These last couple episodes have been so damn fire." "It makes me cry that it's the finale." "You don't necessarily need to make a polished post." "It's for people, not just, you know, for box office numbers." Jeff Russo - Scoring Alien: Earth. On Sync Music Matters this week, I sit down with Emmy-winning composer Jeff Russo the creative force behind some of television's most memorable music. From the darkly playful Fargo score to his latest work on Alien Earth (now streaming on Disney+), Jeff has a gift for crafting soundscapes that challenge, surprise, and deepen the stories they accompany. Our conversation also dug into his long-standing creative partnership with Noah Hawley. Their first project together, The Unusuals, marked the start of a collaboration that has carried through to Fargo and now Alien Earth. Jeff spoke about the trust and shared vision that comes from years of working together. And then there are the instruments. Long gone are the days when Dhruv and Sanjeet talked about QID not being a platform for ranting about films we hate. What was supposed to merely be a (fun) category addition to our Best of 2025 (So Far) List took about an hour of discussion, which made our already super-sized episode even more (probably unbearably) long.So Cris -- who proudly claims this to be "his episode -- has dutifully edited this section of our otherwise 4-hour-long discussion into a one-hour episode of its own.Listen to the full episode to hear Amartya, Cris, Dhruv, Aryan & Adithiyan ranting :)TIME CODESIntroduction - [00:00 - 05:30]Cris ("Badass RK" & "Param Sundari") - [05:30 - 19:30]Dhruv ("Nadaaniyan") - [19:30 - 27:40]Aryan ("Bhool Chuk Maaf") - [27:40 - 34:50]Adithiyan ("Thug Life") - [34:50 - 46:15]Amartya ("Star Trek: Section 31") - [46:15 - 59:20]Follow our Instagram page: https://instagram.com/queenisdead.filmpodcast.QID LINKTREE: https://linktr.ee/queenisdead.Follow us on Instagram at:Adithiyan: https://www.instagram.com/curioseradithiyan/.Amartya: https://www.instagram.com/amartya25/.Dhruv: https://www.instagram.com/terminalcinema/Aryan: https://www.instagram.com/aryantalksfilm/Cris: https://www.instagram.com/prdscris/Follow us on Letterboxd at:Adithiyan: https://letterboxd.com/curioseradi/.Amartya: https://letterboxd.com/amartya/.Dhruv: https://letterboxd.com/aterminalcinema/Aryan: https://letterboxd.com/aryantalksfilms/Cris: https://letterboxd.com/crislim/All Audio Excerpts are used under the “Fair Use Provisions” of the Indian Copyright Act.

Wow! The first new Star Trek movie in eight years! What's that you say? Oh. TV movie? And it's less a "movie" and more a "we were going to develop a new series and that fell through so we made it a one-off, 90 minute thing?" Huh. Well, Star Trek: Section 31 may not be a "movie" in the same way we've used that word for most of its existence, but it was still a good excuse to hang out with our friends Adam and Ben from Max Fun's terrific Trek shows Greatest Gen and Greatest Trek, so every cosmic cloud has a silver lining, we guess.Wikipedia page for Star Trek: Section 31Recommended in this episode:Dan: Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938)Stu: Troop Beverly Hills (1989)Elliott: Chilly Scenes of Winter (1979)Adam: Babylon (2022)Ben: Down With Love (2003)Go to Squarespace.com for a free trial, and when you're ready to launch, go to www.squarespace.com/FLOP to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.Cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money. Matthew and Riki, along with returning guest Abby, dive deep into Section 31, Star Trek's controversial covert intelligence organization. The discussion explores the ethical implications of having a secretive, unaccountable agency within Starfleet and examines the recent Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yeoh. How does Section 31 challenge Star Trek's utopian vision? The hosts examine the tension between Gene Roddenberry's optimistic future and the pragmatic needs of maintaining galactic peace. They question whether having a CIA-like organization contradicts the Federation's principles of transparency and democracy, drawing parallels to real-world intelligence agencies. Is Starfleet truly just an exploratory organization, or is it fundamentally military—or even colonialist—in nature? The conversation delves into how Section 31's existence reveals deeper truths about Starfleet's dual role as both a diplomatic and military force, challenging the narrative that Starfleet is purely focused on peaceful exploration. What went wrong with the Section 31 movie? The hosts provide a critical analysis of the recent film, discussing how it missed opportunities to explore compelling ethical questions in favor of becoming a less successful attempt at combining Ocean's Eleven with Guardians of the Galaxy.Other key topics discussed:The origins of Section 31 in Star Trek's canon and its controversial inclusion in the Starfleet CharterHow Section 31 has been portrayed across different Star Trek series, from Deep Space Nine to DiscoveryThe role of Michelle Yeoh's character Philippa Georgiou and her involvement with Section 31Comparisons between Section 31 and real-world intelligence organizationsThe evolution of Star Trek beyond Roddenberry's original visionPotential storylines that could have made for a better Section 31 movie**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Meanwhile, Google Maps' controversial renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users has sparked some amusing geopolitical tit-for-tats. In the AI wars, OpenAI is fuming over claims that DeepSeek trained its models using OpenAI's own stolen data—ironic, given OpenAI's history of scraping the internet. As if that weren't enough, California's Attorney General warns AI companies that nearly everything they're doing might be illegal, while the Copyright Office suggests AI copyright issues were settled way back in 1965. Oh, and OpenAI is now in the nuclear weapons game. What could possibly go wrong? In tech and business news, CVS is making customers jump through app hoops to unlock cabinets, Uber claims it's the victim of an elaborate fake crash scheme, and Tesla promises a robotaxi business and humanoid robots in 2025—though Musk admits current Teslas will need new hardware to achieve full self-driving. Whole Foods workers have formed their first union since Amazon took over, and MoviePass is considering a pivot to crypto, because of course it is. Meanwhile, Elon Musk's ventures keep making headlines, and Waymo's driverless taxis are facing vandalism in Southern California. Law enforcement in California is also in hot water, having misused state databases over 7,000 times last year. For media lovers, Star Trek: Section 31 is on the horizon, while The Expanse‘s first three seasons are vanishing from Amazon soon. Behind the Music is back, and Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music offers a deep dive into the show's musical legacy. On the gaming front, classic titles like Spaceship Warlock and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are getting attention alongside newly accessible archives of 1,500 classic gaming magazines. The Night Agent Season 2 is here and it sucks, and Amazon is hiking the price of its Music Unlimited subscriptions. Finally, the episode wraps with a nod to Marianne Faithfull's passing and China's new “magic beans” shaking up American markets—because, in this chaotic world, even the beans are making headlines because AI wrote this terrible summary.Sponsors:Factor - Get started at FactorMeals.com/grumpy50off and use code grumpy50off to get 50% off your first box plus free shipping. This week's episode of the Empire Podcast brings you not one but two Oscar winners, as first Chris Hewitt sits down with Michelle Yeoh to talk about her new Star Trek movie, Section 31, and how the Best Actress Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once changed her life [20:56 - 36:39 approx]; then, John Nugent has a fascinating chat with The Brutalist star, current Oscar nominee, and former Best Actor winner, Adrien Brody, about the LA Fires and his role in Brady Corbet's epic drama. [1:02:49 - 1:18:11 approx] Elsewhere, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Kelechi Ehenulo to dig deep into the Oscar nominations, discuss VFX gone wrong, and review The Brutalist, Steven Soderbergh's Presence, Flight Risk, and Star Trek: Section 31, while they also get really specific about TV episodes. Enjoy.
The co-hosts share their takeaways from Pres. Trump's first interview since his inauguration with Fox News' Sean Hannity, and his executive order to end federal DEI programs. The co-hosts weigh in after "Sex and the City" actress Kristin Davis dished on lending money to a then-struggling actor while they were dating – and not getting paid back. Michelle Yeoh joins and discusses becoming the first female lead in a “Star Trek” movie in “Star Trek: Section 31,” and she receives a surprise message from Whoopi Goldberg, who played Guinan in the franchise.
