Subscriber-only episodeSend us a textThe recent hatching of baby eaglets in Big Bear, CA has Amy thinking a lot about patriotism and what it actually means in turbulent times for our country. Lost lady of lit Katharine Lee Bates — a staunch activist for social justice who decried America's isolationist policies — must have considered the same when, during a trip across the country in 1893, she penned what would eventually become the lyrics to “America the Beautiful.” The original words to her poem are a bit more pointed than the version we know today, offering a new perspective on pure (but not blind) patriotism.Mentioned in this episode:Big Bear Eagle CamFriends of Big Bear ValleyKatharine Lee Bates“America the Beautiful” and changing lyrics over time“America the Beautiful”: The Stirring True Story Behind our Nation's Favorite Song by Lynn SherrChicago Columbian Exposition of 1893“America the Beautiful” rendition by Ray Charles“Goody Santa Claus on a Sleigh Ride” by Katharine Lee BatesFor episodes and show notes, visit: LostLadiesofLit.comDiscuss episodes on our Facebook Forum. This Christmas, I thought it would be fun to analyze 6 popular Christmas songs referencing animals-other-than-humans (mostly mammals who are forced to pull people around the snow in sleds, and then some birds, mainly birds that humans kill and eat but sometimes birds humans admire for their beauty). The songs are Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Run Run Rudolph, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bells, The 12 Days of Christmas, and Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song. I'm going to deconstruct these Christmas songs from a Critical Animal Studies perspective. In other words, as an animal rights activist who is sympathetic to the more-than-human-world and the perspectives and interests of other animal individuals and our shared habitats, I analyze these classic songs and what lessons they teach us about fellow animal species and how we could be more respectful, kind of like those Politically Correct Bedtime Story series that gives you a critical yet humorous perspective on classic tales in Western society. My Radio Free Georgia version of this episode has the license to broadcast these popular songs, but for my podcast friends, I don't have copyright permission to play the songs, so I linked to the youtube versions of the songs in the podcast notes here below. For the recording, I'll put a jingle bell sound in there when you can cue up the songs to play yourself if you want to. But I'll speak the key lyrics dealing with animals that I discuss. Það er orðin hefð í síðasta Heimsglugga fyrir jól að leika Fairytale of New York með írsku sveitinni Pogues. Við heyrðum brot af flutningi sveitarinnar við útför Shane MacGowans, söngvara Pogues, í desember í fyrra. Svo var upphafleg útgáfa lagsins leikin í heild.
Hop on the sleigh ride for another day of Christmas Morning magic!
Harry and Rafe start with the idea of a bleak midwinter, dart down some rabbit holes and tell some stories of old shenanigans, and end up on Christmas carols, in particular Sleigh Ride, O Holy Night, Cradle in Bethlehem, Still, Still, Still, and Joseph's Song. Particular attention is paid to Paul Cardall's splendid instrumental version of Still, Still, Still, which serves as the intro and outro tunes for the episode. In the end, they come to the conclusion that Christmas should be done very intentionally to be done well, and that means starting with Advent and then fully embracing the thrill of Hope that Christmas gives to a weary world.*****As always, you can reach the Buf at bufnagle@bufnagle.com*****As you know, this is an independent podcast so your hosts also carry all the expenses of running this podcast.

What a bright time, it's the right time, for Baconsale to discuss Christmas music again. It seems that every classic holiday song has been covered hundreds of times, but on this episode, Joel, Kent, and Zack have whittled that down to three popular versions of 25 iconic songs, including "Jingle Bell Rock," "Let It Snow," "O Holy Night," "Sleigh Ride," “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and "Winter Wonderland." We're going to debate each tree-o of tunes and decide which one should be the default on your smart speaker. We'll also talk in parentheses, break some triple ties, and bare some bias about Bing and Bublé. Beware of Big Gulps making mouth sounds after you press play. You can also find the Spotify playlist of all the Christmas cover song candidates we bring up on this episode at Baconsale.com.

11.18.24 The Inflation "Sleigh Ride"-----------------Just hear those sleigh bells jingle-ing, ten years cratering, too, Come on, it's lame-duck weather for a slow ride to low rates with you. When the final advent candle is lit, will rates rise or slide fifty basis points? The answer should come this week. The bearish trend, uncertainty over the fiscal sanity of the Advanced Economies, and the significant political obstacles for Trump's administration to deliver lower inflation within a year support 5% when sleigh bells ring. The bulls need mistletoe to find a prince among the frogs of declining Oil, wakening Europe, and a lame-duck Yellen Biden on defense without a snow machine.Sleigh Ride with you.---------------------Song: Sleigh Ride (1949) Lyrics paired with it in 1950.Jack Jones

It is an honor to welcome back Voices of Service to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. In 2012, military veterans Ron Henry, Christal Realms, Jason Hanna, and Caleb Green formed the quartet and have sung together ever since. The Voices of Service became household names in 2019 when they auditioned for NBC's talent competition, America's Got Talent. The group's spectacular harmonies received praise from Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, and former judges Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough. The group reached the Season 14 finale, where they placed fifth. In 2020, Voices of Service performed during the America's Got Talent – The Champions: Season Two qualifiers. Despite not advancing to the Semifinals, Cowell, Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Britain's Got Talent judge Alesha Dixon joined the audience in giving them a standing ovation for their potent cover of Kodaline's “Brother.” That same year, the group released their first four-song extended play, Rise, which contained the original tune “Let Me Raise My Voice.” In 2021 and 2022, the quartet released original songs “Come Home” and “Hope” respectively. They also dropped a holiday EP, Deck the Halls, in 2022 that featured the group's interpretations of “Deck the Halls,” “Joy to the World,” and “Sleigh Ride.” In this episode of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Voices of Service discussed whether they would be interested in returning to compete for another AGT spin-off and talked about touring life.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/jake-s-take-with-jacob-elyachar--4112003/support.

MacFarlane and Gillies have brought their bright chemistry and shared love of jazz and the Great American Songbook to a series of exciting collaborations, including their 2021 EP, Songs from Home. We Wish You The Merriest is sure to delight fans of both artists, as they showcase their musical prowess on timeless classics like "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."Says MacFarlane of their latest collaboration: “I've had the privilege of working with a lot of world-class jazz vocalists throughout my career, and Liz Gillies is among the very best of the best. We had a blast recording what we can promise is the most fun holiday album you'll hear this season.”Adds Gillies, “After collaborating for nearly a decade, I was beyond thrilled when Seth came to me with the idea of recording a holiday record. Our first official record. There is no one I know who possesses a deeper knowledge and appreciation for this era of music than Seth.”We Wish You The Merriest follows in the tradition of the Bing Crosby-Rosemary Clooney duet collections that both MacFarlane and Gillies have long admired. The album also serves as a delightful return to holiday music for MacFarlane, who previously showcased his baritone voice in his acclaimed 2014 album, Holiday for Swing, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Charts and New Release Jazz pages.Track List:1. After an official, heavily rehearsed Christmas Carol, our crew just might focus enough to take down the gigantic gelantinous cube and the clutch of will-o-wisps. Will they save the mysterious wizard, or will they kinda forget he's there and let him get annihilated? Hell, maybe they will straight up forget they're in combat and do impressions the whole episode. Guess and take bets. and Happy Holidays dear listeners!
