What is the Genie from Aladdin doing in a Classic Marvel Star Wars comic? And why is it purple? Who is Cody Sunn-Childe? How does this comic relate to the Mortis Arc and World Between Worlds in Star Wars? Richard and Sarah answer all of these questions as they meticulously delve into Issue #46 "Dreadnaught Devourer" OR "The Dreams of Cody Sunn-Childe."   We recommend watching the video version on YouTube which contains the full comic as we page through it.     Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics #46 “DREADNAUGHT DEVOURER"   Release Date: January 20, 1981 Writer: Wally Lombego - AKA J.M. DeMatteis Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Tom Palmer, Glynis Wein Cover Art:  Ed Hannigan and Tom Palmer   While Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca are off to rescue Han Solo, the Millennium Falcon encounters problems with a warp engine while in hyperspace which causes the ship to enter another dimension.    They come upon a mysterious floating domed city, and discover that this city is the psychic creation of Lando's long lost hero - Cody Sunn-Childe. Years ago, Cody turned his back on his violent and savage past when he discovered his powerful mystical ability and so created his City of Dreams to live with his friends in peace away from the Galactic Civil War.    Lando rejects Cody's views claiming that there are times that violence is necessary to win a war, and what good is this power and hidden city when there are millions of people on the other side who are dying because of the Empire.    Meanwhile, the Empire has located the city and Cody has a life-altering decision to make.     As usual, we take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics #27 “Return of the Hunter!” is perhaps the BEST issue so far in this comic series!! Bounty hunter Valance appears, bringing with him all the melodramatic feels of his half human, half cyborg self. We were blown away by the resonating themes and action as Valance confronts Luke, goding him on with insulting name in the galaxy, "droid lover!" Luke and Threepio have some great buddy moments together too, and the three characters are pitted against each other in a final confrontation with a surprising end. Richard and Sarah discuss the comic and find FTOOM! Forced to live as a cyborg due to injuries sustained from an aerial torpedo, Valance's mission is to find Luke Skywalker. Not only is Luke a droid-owner, but he also apparently treats them as equals, which Valance finds repulsive.    Meanwhile, Luke has taken C-3PO with him and is mapping out the perimeter of the Galactic Empire's most recent blockade. He deftly maneuvers his ship out of the way of an oncoming Imperial cruiser and hides out on the planet of Junction and also looks for a  trading post so that he can find parts needed to make repairs to R2-D2.    Luke and C-3PO arrive at a salvage yard where they are confronted by Valance and a battle is underway! Title: "STAR DUEL" Release Date: May 23, 1978 Writer: Archie Goodwin Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Terry Austin Coloring: Janice Cohen Cover Art: Carmine Infantino, Terry Austin Synopsis: Crimson Jack's battlecruiser is fully operational and waiting for Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon to exact his revenge. Now Han has to make a deal that will exchange Jack's navigational charts which were secretly downloaded by Chewbacca, with parts on Jack's cruiser that will enable a safe getaway for his crew which includes Luke, Leia, Chewie and the droids. How will this hand-off go down between two space pirates? With so much Star Wars content coming out these days, did you ever think that maybe some designs and locations were inspired by these comics? Over the last 14 episodes Sarah and Randy laughed at Richard every time he brought this up. But now we are seeing evidence in LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures. And doesn't that new dreadnaught Star Destroyer from The Last Jedi look awfully familiar? Before we move onto the story of Star Duel we had to talk about a recent Marvel Star Wars Comic panel at Terrificon. Comic artist, Howard Chaykin, brought up the impact of the Star Wars comics in the comic industry. In this episode we look at 1978's Star Wars #13: 'DAY OF THE DRAGON LORDS!'. Is this a “filler episode”? Why is Chewbacca about to kill Luke Skywalker?? Randy Martinez gives us an update on his Star Wars Celebration Orlando official Art Show exclusive art. Richard, Sarah and Star Wars artist Randy Martinez dive into this classic Marvel Star Wars comic. Title: "DAY OF THE DRAGON LORDS!" Release Date: April 11, 1978 Writer: Archie Goodwin Consulting Editor: Jim Shooter Penciller: Carmine Infantino, Terry Austin Cover Art: John Byrne Synopsis: Luke Skywalker has been forced to join Governor Quarg's group in their battle against the Dragon Lords. Meanwhile aboard Crimson Jack's space cruiser, Han Solo is trying to talk his way out of trouble when Jack realizes that they have been duped into coming to Drexel. But Quarg's jamming equipment on the planet's surface causes a disruption on the space cruiser, which is enough of a diversion to allow Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia Organa to escape in the Millennium Falcon to the surface below. The Falcon splashes onto the water covered surface of Drexel, right in the middle of an epic battle between Quarg's men and the Dragon Lords with Luke Skywalker caught right in the middle. "At last! Beyond The Movie! Beyond the Galaxy!” reads the cover of each issue of the Marvel Star Wars comics from 1977 and beyond. Richard, Sarah and Star Wars artist Randy Martinez dive into these classic Marvel Star Wars comics from the 1970's and 1980's. In this episode we look at Star Wars #12: 'DOOMWORLD!' Well, this comic MUST be good because the title is in all caps! There's also a ROGUE ONE reference, and you will have to help us settle a big debate on just which Star Destroyer appears in this comic. Title: "DOOMWORLD!" Release Date: March 14, 1978 Writer: Archie Goodwin Consulting Editor: Jim Shooter Penciller: Carmine Infantino, Terry Austin Synopsis: Luke Skywalker, C-3PO and R2-D2 are still stranded on the water world Drexel. However they are caught in the middle of a battle between the sea-dragons, one ridden by a Dragon Lord; and hydra craft piloted by Governor Quarg's scavengers. The combatants are battling for the prize of Luke's wrecked ship, as anything mechanical is a rare commodity on this ocean-covered planet. Luke and the droids are captured and brought back to their base where Luke tries to convince Quarg that the droids would be more useful to them intact instead of being stripped down for parts. Meanwhile, Han Solo is leading Crimson Jack and his gang of pirates to the Drexel system under the pretense that there is treasure to be found. Join us as we review the story and get an artistic analysis from Randy Martinez. Learn more about the Penciler vs. Inker vs. Colorist. We then go over our favorite panel, favorite line and most un-Star Wars moment from this issue. We asked for your opinions on the cover art and you came through with some great feedback.
