Dave is back! When our sometime host Dave heard we were doing 1980, he requested we discuss one of his favorite movies, Flash Gordon. None of the rest of us had seen this movie, and it is quite an experience. While it may not be the best movie ever made, it definitely has found its way into pop culture still today, thanks in no small part to the movie Ted. It also doesn't hurt that the music was done by Queen. It's a movie everyone should probably see once. Flash Gordon was pretty clearly thought to be a franchise with multiple sequels, but it didn't work out that way. Beginning in 1984 with The Pros & Cons Of Hitchhiking tour, Mick's recollections as a Pink Floyd enthusiast and concert taper cover the early solo careers of Roger Waters and David Gilmour, continuing into Pink Floyd's final tour in 1994. Mick talks about how the desire for more Pink Floyd related records was at a peak in the mid 1980's, when many outside artists collaborated with members of the band before the “Dry Floyd” formed. Most notable is how a tape of David Gilmour playing Cliff Richard almost made it onto a bootleg vinyl, and currently has yet to be released.From accidentally flushing his contacts in a hotel room outside of Sweden, to running a Taxi Driver's toll fare up in New Jersey, finding himself in the sea of empty faces in Berlin, and witnessing after-gig road crew jams in Paris, Mick's stored and well-travelled recollections of this period is a story not to be missed.

On this day, 18 May 1980, workers and students in Gwangju, South Korea, rose up against their brutal US-backed dictator, Chun Doo-hwan. Peaceful protesters were fired upon, with many shot and others beaten and stabbed to death by paratroopers. This sparked an uprising across the city, as local residents raided local armouries and police stations, seized weapons and eventually succeeded in driving out government troops. Workers and locals then took control of the city, running it collectively for several days, until paratroopers invaded once more and bloodily suppressed the rebellion, killing hundreds.
