Solving the “Undruggable” Disease Problem with Goldilocks MoleculesIn this episode, Christian Schafmeister, Founder and President of Third Law Molecular, reveals a new class of therapeutics designed to target what most consider “undruggable” diseases—conditions like Alzheimer's, certain cancers, and rare genetic disorders.Christian explains the science behind spiroligomers—modular, mid-sized molecules that act like molecular LEGOs, offering the perfect balance between small molecules and biologics. Learn how his team created a library of 4.5 billion molecules and what makes these structures uniquely suited to bind difficult protein targets, including disordered proteins and intracellular surfaces. We also talk about the Goldilocks Zone of drug design, how Third Law's chemistry was born out of academic and defense-backed research, and why the future of drug discovery may lie in designing therapeutics that are just right.

Monday, 27 January 2025   “Judge not, that you be not judged. Matthew 7:1   “Not you judge, that not you may be judged” (CG).   The previous verse closed out Chapter 6. Now, Chapter 7 opens with one of the top misused verses of all time. Jesus says, “Not you judge.”   Those words alone are what are torn out of their context, shoved in the faces of others, and used as a pretext to claim nobody has the right to ever make a moral decision or render a judgment concerning pretty much any matter someone else doesn't want to be judged over.   The Greek word is krinó. Essentially, it means to distinguish. From that, its meaning is based on the context of what is being said, such as to decide (whether mentally or judicially), to try, condemn, punish, decree, judge, sue, call into question, etc.   Taking these words out of context and applying them as people do essentially means that no person could ever make a decision on anything, ever. However, throughout Scripture judgments are both expected to be made and are openly promoted as necessary. In fact, in verse 7:6, Jesus will instruct His disciples to make necessary judgments.   This continues throughout the gospels, Acts, and the epistles. So what is Jesus saying? The verse continues with, “that not you may be judged.”   Jesus is not actually saying, “Not you judge” period. There is a second half to His words and a greater context in which they are spoken. He says, “Not you judge, that not you may be judged.”   There is a standard that is being conveyed to His disciples. It is a standard that is further explained in His coming words. For now, it is evident that He is telling them that when they judge, judgment will return to them. It almost mirrors Newton's Third Law of Motion, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”   When certain things happen in the moral world of judgment, certain other things of a like kind are to be expected. The more judgmental someone is, therefore, the more judgment he will bring on himself. A good word for a person with such an attitude is censoriousness.   The more censorious someone is, the more censored he can expect to be.   Life application: One of the most nauseating things on the planet is when people post the first words of Matthew 7:1 on social media or cite them in some forum or another. Doing this is an immediate attempt to shut others down about some particular issue or another.   More often than not, it is directed toward Christians by non-Christians. The very people who don't even believe in the Lord, use His words against those who do, but who are unprepared for responding to such citations.   And far too often, Christians then cave in their stand against moral perversion and even outright wickedness. They are unwilling to learn what the Bible is saying, especially in its proper context. If a person is not a part of the solution, he is a part of the problem.   In the case of citing Matthew 7:1, it is a huge problem. Be prepared to respond to people whose agenda is to restrict, silence, or eliminate the moral standards expected of Christians.   Lord God, help us to make right judgments as we live in Your presence. When we judge, we can expect return judgment, so help us to not make decisions or judgments unwisely. Above all, help us to rightly understand Your word in the proper context for the situations in which we find ourselves. Amen.

At a time when even the most square, prosaic suits are quick to quote Arthur C.  Kelsie tours her new neighbor's home after he says, "Howdy."Based on a post by RavenAngstrom Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories.Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, 2010Kelsie Bluebook jogged down the Ocean View sidewalk, boobily bouncing as she did. Her ass, scarcely contained by her shorts, clapped like the chorus of a gospel choir, and it was worshiped as such. Her hair was blonde with an e, her nails were fresh as a farmer's market, her eyes were the color of Blue No. 2 food coloring, industrial grade. Her sports bra was twice as strong as Atlas, for it had to hold up two colossal globes, not one.Every morning, Kelsie went for a jog around the neighborhood. Every morning she became a new teenage boy's fantasy or elicited a 'tut tut' from the prudish nuns who lived up the street. She trotted past her new next door neighbor, Chuck, letting his dog out for a walk. He gazed at her bouncing form, hazel eyes wide as the moon.He was no slouch himself, as Kelsie could see from the tight grey sweatpants he wore while letting his dog out for the morning. His cock was the side of a grandfather clock's pendulum. As mighty as a sledgehammer. A woman needed a heavy machinery license to ride him. He could body shame a sperm whale.Kelsie had to meet him. "Hiya," she called brightly from across the street, waving vigorously."Howdy," he replied. It's a little odd to say 'howdy' in these parts. I'd better investigate, Kelsie thought. She looked both ways, then bounded across the street.Music from the 2017 movie Baywatch starring the Rock and Zac Effron began to play in Chuck's ears. That was both because he saw Kelsie running over, and also because he'd rented the film on DVD last night and the soundtrack had been stuck in his head ever since.Kelsie bounded up to Chuck's front door. The house was cute, with fresh siding and shingles. She could suddenly imagine herself living there and redecorating, but that was because interior decorating was one of her favorite hobbies. She imagined herself living in every house she saw; swapping light fixtures, repainting, changing the curtains to blinds then back to curtains when she realized the blinds looked cheap. She would never do this work herself, of course. She'd hire a strapping young man who dropped his tools a lot so she could bend over to pick them up."Hiya," said Kelsie, even though she'd already said that."Howdy," Chuck repeated."There you go. Saying 'Howdy,' again. Why is that?" Kelsie asked, popping her hip and touching her finger to her mouth. It was her thinking expression. When she put on her thinking expression, men stopped thinking and told her what she wanted to hear."I'm from Texas," Chuck said. "We say howdy there.""Even to strangers?" Kelsie asked."Especially to strangers," Chuck replied. This was true."I don't want to be strangers," Kelsie said. This was also true."No one does," said Chuck. This was a lie, but he said it to flirt with her. Some people like being strangers with others. Chuck had neglected thinking about hermits."What do you want to be?" he flirted."Neighbors," said Kelsie. She reached out her hand and shook his. It seemed very formal to her. She'd prefer he'd kissed her hand, even though it would have been weird. He was handsome enough to pull it off. Yes. Chuck was that handsome."Neighbors," said Chuck, wishing he had the guts to kiss her hand. But that would be weird, he thought, wisely choosing to keep his lips to himself. For now."Mind if I come in?" Kelsie asked. She filled him in on the stuff from paragraph nine, the interior decorator hobby and all that, as they walked into his sitting room."Nice space," she said, wishing he'd pull up the carpet and expose that beautiful hardwood floor beneath. And the walls were too white, a touch of beige would really class up the joint."Thank you," he said. "I'm thinking about tearing up the carpet to expose the hardwood floor. After I paint the walls first, of course."She spun around, wanting to leap into his arms then and there. "I was thinking the same thing," she said breathlessly.Time slowed for Chuck as Kelsie's breasts spun to face him. So did the rest of Kelsie. Keep your mind on the rest of Kelsie, Chuck thought to himself. He was trying his darndest to be polite, but his juicy, swollen, throbbing, hardening, dripping cock of his had him by the brain stem.So determined was Chuck not to look at her buxom, heaving, bountiful, beautiful breasts, he nearly missed what came next."What color?" Kelsie asked."Bright orange," said Chuck.Kelsie paused. That can't be right. He was so perfect a moment ago. Her mind concluded this must be a joke. She laughed, a genuine beautiful laugh that took Chuck's soul and threw it twenty feet aloft. His soul was aloft for two reasons. One, he had made a beautiful woman laugh, one of the greatest feelings in the world (after orgasming inside a woman (or man, if one prefers) while they whisper I love you in your ear while being young (which makes everything better)).The second reason his soul was aloft: he was not joking about painting the room orange, and his heart was panicking like a lost child at a petting zoo with more rams than supervision."I'm kidding," said Chuck, saving the moment and a lot of money on terrible paint. He laughed along, a nervous laugh, like getting too close to a mountain cliff and a couple rocks fall as you scamper back to safety.Chuck is so funny, thought Kelsie's brain. "You are so funny," her mouth echoed. They paused, admiring each other's bodies through their peripheral vision so not to disturb the social contract of not being obvious about checking someone out. Also known as not being a creep. But deep down, they wanted to creep all over each other.Alas, they could not."Shall I show you the kitchen?" Chuck said."Oh, yes," said Kelsie. She looked around, not sure of the direction to go. The hallway from the living room branched in two directions, you see. It was a half split level. She could go up, but that was the way to the bedrooms. Around the corner was down, the way to the kitchen. But she couldn't know which was which, because she'd never been there. She'd spied on the listing, of course. But it was so much different once you're in the house. The photos weren't clear at all in this case. The previous owner had done them himself. Always a disaster, she'd thought at the time.Chuck put his hand on Kelsie's back, guiding her down the stairs to the kitchen. Kelsie swooned inside. She hadn't swooned like this since she saw a Hemsworth brother out on one of her jogs. She didn't know which one it was, she didn't get close enough. But it was definitely one of them. The kitchen sparkled like a ethically sourced diamond. Granite countertops, complementing the white shaker cabinets on a sensibly tiled floor, with a backsplash depicting the 1990's hit show Baywatch in a series of glass tableaus."I like it. The backsplash is interesting..." Kelsie trailed off. It was incredibly done, even though the subject matter was a little odd. The detail of the mosaic was exquisite. Shards of glass the size of a fingernail clipping were sprinkled in as chest hair on a four inch depiction of the 'Hoff. It would almost be a shame to get rid of it, she thought. So much care went into this. "Did you buy the place specifically for the backsplash?"Chuck laughed for real, a deep boom that no doubt echoed around in his testicles for days. "No, but I tried to watch the movie last night. Turns out I rented the wrong one.""These damn remakes," said Kelsie. "Still, the movie industry keeps me employed. So I guess it's better than no-makes." Kelsie laughed at her own joke.Chuck laughed too, a polite, extra hard laugh signaling he was into her.No one would laugh at a joke that terrible, thought Kelsie. Maybe he's stupid.Kelsie walked to the island. That's right, the kitchen had an island too. Piles of move in boxes were stacked on the counters. Kelsie strolled around the island, surreptitiously peering into the box for anything feminine. The pots were at least fifteen years old."I got those in college," Chuck said. He'd noticed she was looking in the box, but chalked it up to general nosiness. He was the same way. No drawers ever went unopened when Chuck was around. No box left unexamined. He'd root around until the job was done.Definitely no wife, probably no girlfriend, Kelsie concluded. She was right. She could have been a detective, or a private eye. Instead, she worked at a movie theater. Until she broke into reality TV, of course. That was right around the corner, she told herself. But with an IQ of 85, the truth was, she was too smart for it. Not that IQ is a good measure of intelligence, but, you get it."So, what do you do?" asked Kelsie as he led her upstairs (if you recall, that's where the bedrooms where)."I'm a fireman," said Chuck. "But the name is a misnomer. I put out fires, I don't start them. That's called a pyromaniac, and they're in a different department than us.""I've been to the pyromania department several times, and it's always a drag," said Kelsie, batting his muscular arm with her dainty hand. She squeezed his muscles quite obviously, biting her lips as she did.Chuck was used to people feeling his muscles. It was always a good sign. That was usually what happened before his dates took their tops off. But he only ever went to second base nowadays, after what happened to her...Chuck flashbacked. He was saying goodbye to his wife as she left for the department store. She was going to grab more extra-large condoms. They weren't trying for a baby. And they didn't want to be trying for an abortion, either. When the police came to his door a few hours later and said, "Mr. Ock, your wife has been killed in a Columbus Day shopping stampede, you need to come with us to identify the body," that's when he knew something bad had happened. He never celebrated Columbus Day again; he was an Indigenous People's Day man now. He'd moved to Ocean View, California get away from all that. But you can't always outrun your past.Chuck un-flashbacked. Somehow, they'd entered the master bedroom. His king size four poster bed was on the only thing set up. Atop it lay a magnificent tiger's pelt. It was a fake, because Chuck respected animals, but it was a really good fake, so it appealed to everyone."Wow!" exclaimed Kelsie. "That's one fantastic duvet!" She stroked it, causing goosebumps to erupt on her neck like moguls on a double black diamond run."Try laying on it," said Chuck. He didn't even mean anything suggestive by it, he was genuinely excited to show off how it felt.Kelsie leapt backward onto the pelt, falling at just the right speed to ensnare Chuck's imagination forever. The sight of her beautiful body falling onto his magnificent bedspread was forever etched in his mind. It would be the last thing he'd remember before dying at a ripe old age.Just when Chuck thought it couldn't get any better, he caught a glimpse of her panties as the wind caught her short shorts. His cock throbbed again, making his head spin as the blood drained out of his brain like the last drops of a bath.Kelsie had been a cheerleader, and always looked forward to a chance to show off. Her slow motion fall onto a tiger pelt faux-skin was the perfect time. She didn't literally slow time, but she'd often heard men describe the experience of watching her fall in such a way. All of those men died with her as their last thought, at ripe old ages when they had forgotten everything else, even friends and family. But that's getting too far ahead. The tiger skin was even more luxurious on her back. She made a fur angel in the pelt."That's exactly what I did too," said Chuck. He leapt next to her, wanting to make a fur angel of his own.Alas, all his muscle came at a price. He was heavy (not fat though), and if Chuck had one flaw, it was that he didn't spring for a memory foam mattress. Instead, he sprung for a spring one, purchased last spring on the day the clocks sprang ahead. As Chuck plummeted to the bed, an equal and opposite reaction caused Kelsie to fly upward an equal amount, minus friction, air resistance, and all that. She landed on top of Chuck.Kelsie's boobs breasted against Chuck's chest. His dick cocked against her pelvis. Their noses cracked into each other.Realizing what he'd done in his reckless abandonment of Newton's Third Law, Chuck grabbed Kelsie and pulled her close, stopping her from tumbling off the edge like an outdated stereotype of a lemming. You're a hero, Chuck Ock, he thought. Not as big a hero as if I'd stopped a terrorist, but a hero all the same.He wants me, Kelsie thought. And I want him. She kissed his mouth (it was sensible, their heads were close together). He returned her kiss with a passion she'd never felt before. A passion like an old man has for his model train set that looks like a small mountain town in Colorado. This was unexpected, Chuck thought. But nice. Very nice. His inner monologue had a Borat ring to it. Chuck's thoughts were easily polluted by popular culture. He ran his muscular fingers down her back. She had curves like a timekeeper's hourglass, with a hell of a lot of sand in both sides. His fingers rounded her ass, tracing back around to her front.Kelsie's breath caught in her throat. Is this happening? Kelsie thought. Am I going to fuck my next door neighbor? I barely know him. But from the way he nibbled her ear, he knew her.Just second base, Chuck thought. For Phoebe.Chuck flashbacked once again. The cops were sitting on his sofa, delivering the news. "Her last words were, 'I hope my husband, Dr. C. Ock, Esquire (he had a law degree), moves on from me and finds a new love, even if it's a simple fling with his new neighbor.'" Then the cop patted his back, trying to comfort him.Chuck had never figured out what his wife's final words meant. They had always puzzled him, like the show Lost.Until now. She had wanted Chuck to be happy.I hope he's okay, thought Kelsie. He's spacing out a little. She wished he'd make another move.Suddenly, Kelsie saw clarity. Be the change you want to see in the world — Mamma Gandy. She remembered that quote from school. She misremembered the attribution, but hey, at least she could point to India on a map. Can you?Seizing the moment, Kelsie slid her own hand over his cock. She confirmed her suspicious. It was a monster. Cocky McCockerson. Enough wood to last a lifetime. The cock of the walk. Dicky McSchlong. The Prince of Penises (King seemed a little judgmental, after all, there were probably a couple dicks better than his (there were, but not many (less than you can count on your hand).Kelsie grabbing Chuck's cock was the go-head signal he needed. He un-flashbacked once more, his purpose as clear as a plate glass window. With his dead wife's blessing, he was now willing and able to enter Kelsie, please her, and leave her sated. So he began. His mouth moved South along her body, pausing to make base camp between her tits. There, he climbed from mountaintop to mountaintop and back, warming up her cunny with his finger as he did.Kelsie savored his gentle touch. Combining his fingers with his tongue, he made two great feelings better, like peanut butter and chocolate. She pushed against his strong, muscular hand; manly callouses on his palms from saving lives, both human and puppy. She wanted more.Chuck made his way South once again, having satisfied his lust for her twin mountains. His kiss jumped her naval like a show stallion. He kissed her clit, thank god he knows where that is, Kelsie thought, then ran his tongue along her lips.A moan sprung from Kelsie, loud enough to wake Chuck's next door neighbor, if his next door neighbor hadn't been getting her cunny eaten out. Kelsie's senses grew dimmer as the aching in her body overtook her. It was coming. It was coming. She was cumming.Chuck wore his lover's legs like earmuffs, deafening him from her orgasmic cry. His ears popped when she removed them, draping her thick thighs over his shoulders instead."Don't quit on me now," Chuck growled, revealing his titanic hog. His voice was so low when he made love it was practically in the basement."I never give up," said Kelsie. "Fuck me raw, like W W E."Chuck sprang into action, leaping to his knees in a single move.So acrobatic. I wonder if he likes Cirque du Soleil? thought Kelsie. He slipped his cock inside her, and she groaned with pleasure, halfway to orgasm yet again."Do you like having your hair pulled?" Chuck asked, completely respecting her boundaries."I do," said Kelsie. He grabbed a fistful of her thick blonde hair, pulling like a horse's reins, steering her body to pleasure. His cock pushed in and out of her, and Kelsie's breath grew short.Kelsie felt her body tensing. Chuck's arms wrapped around her, lifting her into the air as easily as if she were a warm luffa. He was as strong as the bond between a man and his dog. Strong as the bond of an experienced arc welder. Strong as the bond in a bear market. Strong as the Bond in all of those movies and books by Ian Fleming.Kelsie gazed into Chuck's eyes. They were so bright and loving. She could feel the joy in his heart, a joy she'd uncovered like the living room's original hardwood floors."Chuck?" she panted, as he pounded her (gently) like a dirty, dirty girl (respectfully)."Yeah?" he replied, his eyes filling with lust."Are you wearing a condom?" she asked."I put one on while I was licking you," said Chuck. "I hope that isn't too forward.""Not at all," replied Kelsie. Satisfied with his answer, and the rigorous fucking she was receiving, Kelsie came again, drenching Chuck's cock with her slick. She moaned as she came, grabbing her own tits as she did.The sight of Kelsie squeezing herself set Chuck off like a rocket. Cum flooded Kelsie's insides, stopped by the latex levee. Although neither had  an STI, they didn't want to get pregnant. Not yet.Chuck collapsed with Kelsie atop the tiger skin blanket. They held each other as new lovers do; tightly, afraid letting go will spoil the moment."Wow," said Kelsie. "You weren't kidding about this tiger skin.""It's magical," said Chuck. They lay side by side, enjoying the beat of each other's hearts, as lovers often do. But the dastardly villain of all happy moments, Time, reared its ugly head.Kelsie checked her smartwatch, which definitely knew she'd been having sex, and had already sold that data to governments and companies around the globe. Soon, she'd be getting targeted ads for prophylactics."Oh noes! I was supposed to finish my run an hour ago," she exclaimed. They had made love all morning, it had turned out. In the heat of the moment, it felt like minutes. She sprung to her feet, adjusting her top and bottom back in place where Chuck had cast them asunder like watermelon seeds on the fourth of July."I should get to work," said Chuck. "Those fires aren't going to fight themselves. Still, it was nice of them to wait until after your visit.""Maybe I can cum again," joked Kelsie, leaning into the double entendre."I feel like you will," said Chuck, escorting her to the front door. He hadn't put his pants back on, and Kelsie felt his cock bounce against her ass. Marking her as his."I'll see you around," said Kelsie, once she was outside. She smiled in the noonday sun, her perfect teeth dazzling like 28 cubic zirconia (she'd had her wisdom teeth removed at age twenty)."Cum again," said Chuck, reusing her joke in a slightly worse way in an attempt to forge a deeper connection and show he listened to her.How nice of him to acknowledge my joke, thought Kelsie. She turned to leave."Maybe you can help me redecorate," said Chuck. She twirled back toward him, giving him another booby lifetime memory. "I'd like that," Kelsie said. "I have a ton of great ideas." She bounded off down the sidewalk, happy as she'd ever been.Chuck called his dog back inside, then returned to the bedroom's en suite bathroom to shower. First, he put away the box of condoms. The extra-large type. The box his wife had made her final purchase. He was ready to use them on someone new.Based on a post by RavenAngstrom for Literotica.

Premature Obituaries? Bruce Friedrich's Optimism for Cultivated Meat

Upon reading his obituary, Mark Twain reportedly wrote that “the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Whether Twain actually wrote this or not, the reality remains that today the reports of the death of cultivated meat are indeed quite real. Yet Bruce Friedrich, the president of the Good Food Institute, is here to tell you that he believes such reports are not based on science and are indeed greatly exaggerated.  Few people have done more to inspire others to pursue alternative protein—including cultivated meat—as a strategy to ameliorate world problems than Bruce. I've known Bruce since 1996, and one thing that's remained constant during the past three decades is that Bruce's commitment to reducing suffering on the planet is simply enormous. Whether in his role as part of the nonprofit animal advocacy world or the crusade he's been on since co-founding GFI in 2016 to render alternative proteins no longer alternative, Bruce's lodestar has always been: how can he do as much good as possible during his limited time on the planet? In this conversation, Bruce and I focus on the state of the plant-based and cultivated meat industries today, why he believes the critics are misguided, whether China will lead this race, how to respond to the new cultivated meat bans like those newly passed in Florida and Alabama, and critically: what it will take for alt-protein to no longer be alt. Discussed in this episode This episode is the 10th in our ten-part podcast series on cultivated meat. The previous nine episodes include Orbillion Bio, UPSIDE Foods, Avant Meats, BlueNalu, Eat Just, Fork & Good, Mosa Meat, New Harvest, and Aleph Farms. Good Meat is now selling cultivated chicken at a butchery in Singapore. China's five-year plan for the future of meat. The cultivated meat documentary Meat the Future. More about Bruce Friedrich Bruce Friedrich is founder & president of the Good Food Institute, a global network of nonprofit science-focused think tanks, with more than 220 full-time team members across affiliates in the U.S., India, Israel, Brazil, Singapore, and Europe (UK, Germany, & EC). GFI works on alternative protein policy, science, and corporate engagement - to accelerate the production of plant-based and cultivated meat in order to bolster the global protein supply while protecting our environment, promoting global health, and preventing food insecurity. Friedrich is a TED Fellow, Y Combinator alum, 2021 "American Food Hero" (EatingWell Magazine), and popular speaker on food innovation. He has penned op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Nature Food, Wired, and many other publications. In this thought-provoking episode of 'After the Affair,' host Luke Shillings delves into the surprising parallels between Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion and conflict dynamics in relationships. Entitled 'The 3rd Law of Conflict: Can Isaac Newton Help us Heal?', this episode explores the concept that every action in a relationship, especially during conflicts, tends to invoke an equal and opposite reaction. As a seasoned relationship coach specialising in infidelity recovery, I examine how the principles of physics can shed light on why disagreements often escalate and how understanding this can pave the way for more constructive communication and conflict resolution. Drawing on my personal experiences and professional insights, I discuss how the 'push and pull' in heated arguments mirrors Newton's famous law, leading to a stalemate rather than progress. This episode is not just about relationship advice; it's a deep dive into human psychology and behaviour. I also touch upon the idea that relationships are fundamentally about one's thoughts about another person, adding a unique angle to the discussion. Whether you're navigating the aftermath of infidelity, looking to improve your relationship dynamics, or simply intrigued by the intersection of physics and human relationships, this episode offers valuable perspectives. Join me as I guide you through these complex dynamics with insightful tips, out-of-the-box thinking, and practical advice for healing and personal growth. What happens to one sun of a binary pair if the other goes supernova? Can we mitigate the greenhouse effect? How big should a telescope be? For our Season 2 finale, we're answering fan questions from YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. To bring those questions to life, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome two members of the LIUniverse social media team, “Vinyl Benjy” Schoenfeld, our TikTok manager, and Stacey Severn, our Social Media Director. As always, though, we start off with the season's final joyfully cool cosmic thing, the most recent image of Uranus by the James Webb Space Telescope. Taken using the JWST's infrared imaging capabilities, rather than visible light, this incredibly beautiful photo of Uranus clearly shows its 7 spectacular rings and 14 moons. Now, on to your questions! First, Stacey reads a question from YouTube fan Darker Void Scientist, who asks, “Wouldn't some violently spinning galaxies produce strong magnetic fields that act as a barrier to some spectrum of traveling waves?” To answer, Charles gets to discuss the Zeeman Effect and the Parker Instability. He explains that entire galaxies can't spin fast enough, but that violent spinning does occur and produce magnetic fields closer to the supermassive black holes in the center of those galaxies. Benjy reads our next question, from YouTube fan Mark Caesar 4443: “When stars go very near black holes and get sling-shotted around them, what would we see of them in terms of time dilation? Surely we would see them slow down as they approach the black hole, of course, that is assuming we can actually observe them.” Chuck dives into what we would be able to perceive at all, from our perspective, and why we would see color shifts but not necessarily the impact of time dilation that the star itself would experience. Allen tackles the next question, from Randy Starnes on Facebook, who wants to know whether we could take a rechargeable battery and use it to power a plasma rocket. Our co-host explains that while rechargeable batteries wouldn't generate enough energy for a plasma engine, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are used by Rocket Lab for the electric pumps on their reusable Electron rockets. Stacey next asks another question from YouTube, from @sbkarajan: “How do NASA or anyone measure distance from the planet to the Sun? I heard for Earth they measure the distance to Mars or Venus transit using Keppler's Third Law. Is it the only way?” Chuck explains that when humanity was still stuck on Earth, that was the only way. But since we have more tactics at our disposal, from satellites to radar signals, to do far more accurate measurements, even at vast distances. Next up, @frankwestphal8532 from YouTube: “What would happen to the other star in a supermassive star binary system if one of the stars ‘supernova-ed' before the other?” It turns out that happens all of the time... and none of the outcomes tend to be good for the other star. But Frank's not done, and his follow up question about the early universe, binary-system supernovae, and the creation of supermassive black holes is a bit of a chin-scratcher for Chuck! Stacey's next question comes via Instagram from our friends CJ Dearinger and Dr. Mounce on the “All Things – Unexplained” podcast: “When will astrophysics encounter/present undeniable proof of a new life form?” Predictions, obstacles, and discussion of alien cryptids ensue. In another Instagram question, Ben Jordans asks, “How do you perceive the current efforts to mitigate the greenhouse effect? Are you of the opinion that we will succeed in mastering this problem, and if so, how?” Chuck explains the greenhouse effect, on Earth as well as on Venus and Mars, and the difference between the effect itself and human involvement in it. He and Allen disagree as to how long it might take to redress the problem, while Stacey and Benjy jump in with their more pessimistic concerns about climate change, extreme weather, and the future. Benjy gets the last question, from @emiliotorres2718 on YouTube: “How do we go about deciding how big we want a telescope to be? Is it simply the bigger the telescope we make, the farther we'll be able to see into the universe?” Chuck says the simple answer is yes, but the actual answer is more complicated. To hear it, you'll have to watch or listen in to the final episode of Season 2 of The LIUniverse! We hope you enjoy The LIUniverse, and, if so, please support us on Patreon. We'll return for Season 3 in 2024. You can even watch it on the web.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Tamra: My superpower is giving grace.Tamra Ryan and her team at the Women's Bean Project, a nonprofit social enterprise in Denver, daily accomplish tasks many of us fear are impossible–helping women recovering from addiction, incarceration or homelessness return to full, productive and happy lives. The Women's Bean Project hires women in these challenging circumstances to work and train for even better jobs. “A typical woman we hire hasn't had a job longer than a year in her lifetime,” Tamra says. “The average age is about 38. So by the time they come to the Beam project, they have long histories of addiction and incarceration, often homelessness.”The nonprofit employs the women to make bean soup–and about 50 other food products they sell locally and online nationally. She provides some additional context for understanding the work: No one ever has one barrier to employment. Barriers happen in clusters, and they're interwoven and complicated. So, there are challenges with maintaining sobriety. There are health issues that have come up because of years of substance misuse. There are communication challenges. There's a history of domestic violence.Think about all of those things in the context of how they get in the way of employment and employment being the key to breaking out of poverty and staying out of prison. We approach it from that standpoint of working with each woman, meeting her where she is and helping her overcome her barriers to employment. To illustrate the power of the work, Tamra shares a story of a young woman:One woman stands out to me. She was just 21. That's our minimum age to hire at. Her background was that at 13, her mom introduced her to cocaine and later threw her out of the house because she perceived that she was competition for boyfriends. So, at roughly 13, she was on the streets. She didn't finish school. She was too young to get a job. So, she spent the next five years involved with a lot of bad people, doing a lot of bad things. Maybe the best thing that could have happened to her is that at 18, she was arrested because then she got into the justice system; that helped her get stable and get sober. By the time she was 21 when her pastor referred her to us, she was ready to start her life and to watch her go from not having had the opportunity to develop her identity as a teen, which is when we typically do, to becoming–deciding who she wanted to be and what kind of mom she wanted to be. Today, she's in her 30s, and she is she has a daughter. Think about the fact that her daughter will never know a time when [her mom's] not employed. Not only does she, this woman, have a full-time job, but she also volunteers at a women's prison near her home and does pastoral counseling for the women who are in this prison. When I think about when we get to a point where we are stable enough to begin to pay it forward or to help someone else, that's a testament to having accomplished a lot.The program's success proves that troubled women society may be tempted to write off as lost souls are worth a hill of beans–and much more. Their lives have all the potential of anyone else and all the value of any of us.In this inspiring work, Tamra daily employs her superpower, giving grace.AI Episode Summary* Tamra Ryan is the CEO of the Women's Bean Project in Denver, which employs women in difficult circumstances through a nonprofit social enterprise.* The Women's Bean Project hires women experiencing chronic unemployment and teaches them the skills needed to move to mainstream employment.* The women work in food manufacturing, producing a variety of food items distributed across the US.* The purpose of the Women's Bean Project is to help women overcome barriers to employment.* Women spend 70% of their paid time working in the business and 30% of their paid time in classes focused on personal development.* The Women's Bean Project works with other organizations to provide additional support, such as housing, legal services, and counseling.* The women in the program typically have histories of addiction, incarceration, and homelessness.* The Women's Bean Project aims to address the whole person and help women become great employees who can then find jobs in the community.* The program has had many success stories, with women blossoming into confident individuals who can support themselves and their families.* By changing a woman's life, the Women's Bean Project also has a positive impact on her family and the community as a whole. How to Develop Giving Grace As a SuperpowerTamra shares how she uses her superpower, giving grace, to serve the women employed at the Women's Bean Project:The person I'm interacting with is coming from a place, and maybe they're doing the best that they can, and maybe it's not a great interaction, but I need to give them the grace to be where they are at that time. I think very often, especially today, so many of our interactions between people entirely lack grace–just understanding that people bring different perspectives to every interaction with one another–there is not a lot of grace-giving that's happening.Tamra shared another inspiring story to help us see the impact of grace:I think of a woman named Joy who came to us after spending time in federal prison because of the level of drug dealing that she was doing. She came to us; she had gotten custody of her kids back. She had four kids ranging in age from 8 to 18 when she started working for us. During the time that she was working for us, at the time, our wage was $8 an hour. When she went back for her redetermination for her food stamps, which were helping her support her kids, she was receiving $150 a month–and figuring out how to make that work with just 150 bucks–and they cut her to $5 a month because her $8 an hour job was too much. She came in to work and said, “I just have to quit because this isn't worth it. I don't even know why I don't just go back to dealing drugs because I never had to worry about this problem. I didn't have to report my income.”It was a dark time for her. She stopped coming to work for a few days. We started working with her. We wouldn't let her go. We persisted. What could have happened with any other employer is to just let her quit. What we decided was that, in the long run, that wouldn't be the best thing for her or her family–allowing her to quit. Instead, we helped her get access to food resources. She was pretty close to graduating. I think the ultimate punch in the face to fate was that she went on to work for a food distributor, making $18 an hour, so she no longer even needed access to food stamps. She graduated our program because we wouldn't let her quit. And then she ended up having this sweet revenge on the universe by getting such a great job.Tamra also shares some advice for giving grace:Check yourself and realize that your perspective is just one perspective. I often joke that there are three sides to every story: his, hers, and the truth. Starting from that standpoint of understanding that just because it's your opinion and it may be a well-founded opinion or perspective, it's not the only perspective. Being open to the idea that someone else's perspective is just as valid as your own and being willing to listen to it and try to understand [is key]. It's easy for us to apply our paradigms. I think back to when I first started at the Bean Project, with the biases and prejudices that I had that I didn't even know I had. I remember thinking that people who were chronically unemployed didn't want to work or that people who went to prison had just made bad choices. It was their fault. It took meeting women and recognizing that, except for the fact that I happen to be born a middle-class white girl in Colorado Springs, there was no difference between us. A woman may have made bad choices, but maybe she had five choices, and they were all bad. She chose the best of the bad. It was being faced with the reality that other people had that wasn't the same as my reality—beginning to understand that except for the grace of God, go I on some level—being open to the idea that each of our own perspectives is one of many perspectives. Being open to this idea that we may not be right is a great way to start in terms of giving grace.By following Tamra's example and advice, you can make giving grace an empowering skill that helps you better serve others. With practice, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest ProfileTamra Ryan  (she/her):CEO, Women's Bean Project About Women's Bean Project: Women's Bean Project provides job training and employment to women facing significant barriers to work, selling high-quality food products made by these women to support their mission.Website: www.womensbeanproject.com/Twitter Handle: @womensbeanCompany Facebook Page: facebook.com/womensbeanprojectOther URL: www.womensbeanproject.com/subscription/Biographical Information: Tamra Ryan is the CEO of Women's Bean Project, a social enterprise that provides transitional employment while operating a food manufacturing business to women attempting to break the cycle of chronic unemployment and poverty. In this episode, Sean dives into the third hermetic principle - Vibration. He explains that everything is energy and vibration, though we mistakenly concretize vibrations into fixed forms. This creates the illusion of separation and suffering. Sean points to the war in Israel-Palestine as an example. By taking sides and judging, we freeze the conflict's vibration instead of holding it as permeable energy we can heal. He shares how our thoughts instantly create vibrations rippling outward. Lies and impure thoughts emanate painful vibrations. But tuning ourselves to higher frequencies of love allows miracles to flock to us. Sean stresses that while we cannot avoid life's ups and downs, we can find strength by seeing challenges as bridges and walking them with love. Mastering vibration means appreciating how our energy shapes reality and taking responsibility for it. Key Takeaways: We falsely concretize energy into fixed forms Judgment keeps lower vibrations rigid, while love permeates Thoughts emanate instant vibrations that shape reality Tuning our frequency to love attracts more love Reframe challenges as bridges to walk steadfastly with love What we put out energetically is what we get back

Bite into baklava with Charlie Jane Anders as we discuss how her childhood fantasy of aliens whisking her away from Earth gave birth to her Unstoppable trilogy, the way writing a YA meant she had to completely change the way she writes, the challenges of bringing a large cast of characters to life while giving them their own inner lives, why she has problems with Clarke's Third Law but was willing to roll with it for her new trilogy, the difficulties of still being at work on the third book of a trilogy when the first was already in the hands of readers, how growing as a writer means embracing the messiness of the process, her reaction to being called "this generation's Le Guin," what she had to learn to be able to write comics, and so much more.

In this episode we dive into the world of smart contracts and their remarkable impact on organizational design. Our guest Justice Conder provides a thought-provoking introduction to what he calls the third law of nature of smart contracts. We explore the transformative journey from traditional corporations to the realm of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) keeping a non ideological mindset and examining the challenges of bridging the gap between the two paradigms. Justice Conder does DAO Ecosystem Development at Polygon Labs. Before this he was a full-stack developer and Agile practitioner for over ten years and entered the world of DAOs through BanklessDAO, where he contributed as a governance solution engineer. With Justice we explore the disconnect between DAOs and traditional organizations, investigating how smart contracts - as a conceptual evolution of DevOps - could play a pivotal role in driving organizational transformation. We also discuss how pioneering transformations such as the one with Haier's management model, Rendanheyi, has a symbiotic relationship with the on-chain revolution, offering insights into the future of organizational design and management. Our clients come and go in different financial statuses. Which financial status are you currently in? Chaos? Crusader? Happily Ever After? Listen to find out. In this podcast episode we're talking about: Money anxiety How to get relief & control back in your finances Money mindset Debt pay off strategies Organizing your  Living paycheck to paycheck What's more important than your credit score NSF fees How you can be like Frodo from Lord of the Rings How to see the light at the end of the tunnel with your money Getting to automatically saving & investing Being able to be as generous as you want to Side note: money is amoral. It is a tool that can be used for good or for bad. We know you're going to use it for good, so get over your shyness and get ready to have an incredible financial future full of opportunities and generosity! The first status is chaos. During this status, you have no idea what's going on financially. Typically, you're scared or overwhelmed about what's going on so you just ignore it. This doesn't mean you're not making ends meet. It usually just means you make good money but have nothing to show for it. It means you aren't sure how to make financial decisions, so you wing it or use debt. The second status happens when you organize your finances to get out of debt. Debt is a thief that keeps you paying for the past rather than funding the future. Regular, wealthy, financially independent people aren't using debt or credit scores as a measure of any success, trust us. In fact, we have a saying we like to use: “The poor pay interest, while the rich earn interest.”  The Third Law of Wealth from the Richest Man in Babylon The third status is when you've gotten out of debt and have set up a solid investment plan and you understand when you will be financially independent. In this stage, you'll start piling up cash in your emergency fund, your vacation and gift-giving accounts as well your investments and anything else you are excited to fund.  So, where are you? She says, “The energy you're putting out right now is coming back to you all the time whether you recognize it or not. And, if you can become conscious of that then it will change the way you operate your entire life.” Oprah also talks about Newton's Third Law of Motion with filmmaker Tom Shadyac who gave up his glamorous Hollywood life after a near death accident.

Cross-examinations are a staple of teevee. On Law and Order, there is a plethora of great scenes where Jack McCoy presses the defendant until they break and inadvertently provide irrefutable evidence against themselves. Lije Baley wants us to believe there is no benefit to cross-examining a robot, but teevee and Captain James T. Kirk argue against this. Consider this scene from "The Ultimate Computer," restored to the intended version that was prevented by copyright issues. Ironic because Star Trek walks right up to the border of the ground Asimov covered in The Naked Sun in this one. M5: This unit is the ultimate achievement in computer evolution. It will replace man so that man may achieve. Man must not risk death in space or other dangerous occupations. This unit must survive so man may be protected. SPOCK: Captain, attack force almost within phaser range. KIRK: There were many men aboard those ships. They were murdered. Must you survive by murder? M5: This unit cannot murder. KIRK: Why? M5: Murder is contrary to the First Law of Robotics. KIRK: But you have murdered. Scan the starship Excalibur, which you destroyed. Is there life aboard? M5: No life. KIRK: Because you murdered it. What is the penalty for murder? M5: Death. KIRK: And how will you pay for your acts of murder? M5: This unit must die. (It disconnects itself from the power feed in Engineering and goes dark.) KIRK: M-5? CHEKOV: Sir, deflector shields have dropped. SULU: All phaser power is gone, sir. SPOCK: M-5 is leaving itself open to attack. The machine is ignoring the Third Law to atone for its violation of the First Law. So, despite Baley's repeated assertions to the contrary, Kirk shows us it can be productive to cross-examine a robot, perhaps even forcing a mental freeze-out. "Mental freeze-out!" you might exclaim! "Dr. Han Fastolfe says that's practically impossible!" I suggest we ask Captain Kirk about that too. But let's think about this together as we discuss chapters 7, 8, and 9 of The Robots of Dawn. It's a monument to cross-examination and interrogation. And not just of robots. We talk about it, you can join us! Let's go! The scene from "The Ultimate Computer" was taken from Chrissie's Transcripts Site. (and then shamelessly edited).
