I have seen friends walk away from relationships, jobs, and promising careers when all they really needed was some time and space to gather their thoughts, slow their heart rate, and rediscover their joy. I'm not saying you should always, “hang on one more day at a time and wait for things to get better.” I am saying you need to recognize the changing seasons in your life. Bobbie Gentry knew when it was time to stop, turn the page, and begin a new chapter. Bobbie knocked the Beatles off the #1 spot on the music charts with “Ode to Billy Joe,” a song that she wrote, performed, and produced. She won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards. Eleven more of her songs made the music charts. She was a major headline act in Las Vegas and she co-hosted a successful TV series with country music superstar Glen Campbell. America watched as Bobbie Gentry provided the music for a major motion picture about her imaginary Billie Joe McAllister, then performed “Mama, a Rainbow” for her mother who was seated in the studio during the filming of a television special. The next day, Bobby quietly retired from the spotlight without fanfare, returning no phone calls, answering no letters, and granting no interviews. She had been in the spotlight for 14 years when she whispered, “Enough,” and walked away 41 years ago. What triggered it? Nothing. She simply realized that a season in her life had ended. Solomon spoke famously about the seasons of life in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes:There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. … He has made everything beautiful in its time. … I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. One can think of the seasons of life in a few different ways.Financially, we go from survival to acquisition to distribution. Relationally, we go from seeking, to finding, to celebrating. In business, we go from learner, to doer, to teacher. This is essentially the Hero's Journey, a sequence of events that is nearly impossible to escape: 1. We meet the Hero in modest circumstances. 2. He encounters the Call to Adventure. 3. He meets the Old Man in the Woods who prepares him for what lies ahead. 4. He then rises to the challenge of adventure and discovers abilities within himself he didn't know were there. In the Bible we see Moses, Joseph, Samson, David and many others, including women such as Hannah, Esther, Abigail, Ruth, and Deborah as they encounter the Hero's Journey. In literature and in the movies, we see Bilbo in The Hobbit, Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid, Simba in The Lion King, Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Neo in The Matrix, and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Luke was just a goober on the backwater planet of Tatooine when he was called to adventure. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the Old Man in the Woods who prepared him for his journey. Luke was again a goober with a wrecked spaceship in a swamp on Dagobah when he encountered Yoda, his second Old Man in the Woods who would prepare him for his second adventure. Which Luke Skywalker are you?Are you...

Season 6 of The Clone Wars ends not with a bang, but with a sigh of surrender — and hope for a different kind of victory. In the Yoda's Journey Arc (TCW 6.11–13, “Voices,” “Destiny,” and “Sacrifice”) we follow Yoda from Coruscant to Dagobah, to the heart of the universe, and then finally to Moraband, the ancient homeworld of the Sith. His quest takes him through every step of the Hero's Journey in pursuit of “the great gift:” the secret of creating consciousness after death. And he discovers the truth about the Jedi's hopes of winning the Clone War. Throughout his quest, Yoda has to face down everything from creepy-crawly Sith smoke snakes to the dark gremlin inside of himself. And it…is…FANTASTIC. We do a blow-by-blow recap of the epic duel between Yoda and the Dark Lord of the Sith, recite a CVS receipt-length litany of Yoda wisdom and shed some tears for the wisest Jedi of all. Next week, we're beginning Season 7 of The Clone Wars! YAHOO! Tune in for our recap of the first half of the Martez Sisters Arc (TCW 7.5–6, “Gone with a Trace” and “Deal or No Deal”). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/growingupskywalker/message

I've seen things like "Finally! An episode that lives up to the hype!" and "Obi-Wan Kenobi can't deliver in the finale" and "Obi-Wan ultimately wasn't even about Obi-Wan" and I think the answer lies in the point of view. If you loved Reva, you probably love her underdeveloped arc. If you love Vader, you probably love how he's still obsessed with his master, but still shows great skill with a saber, metal legs and all. If you love Luke, well, you're probably disappointed with Disney's sly little implication that he's always been a weakling. Owen and Beru are shown to be brave and capable caretakers of the galaxy's future. Thank goodness. Obi-Wan reaches "rock bottom" and instead of recoiling in the horror of maiming his friend's body, he finally realizes that Anakin destroyed his soul long before his lungs and limbs burned on Mustafar. Palpatine is still playing mind games. Qui Gon Jinn gets the Force ghost treatment we've only seen thus far in animated form. I half expected to see Yoda eating frogs on Dagobah. Was this show perfect? Absolutely not! The writers, with the exception of Andrew Stanton, should never get near Star Wars again. Deborah Chow got her shot and some of the camera set ups were atrocious. No more show running Star Wars, please, but if Filoni or Favreau want to let her direct episodes, at least someone will be looking over her shoulder. Once again, the dialogue is not great. Once again, the logic is flawed in places. Once again, Obi-Wan is on Tatooine keeping a (distanced) eye on Luke and all is well...except for that huge giant information bomb that's out there somewhere in the universe, one we know never goes off, but shouldn't exist or at the very least, should be dead and buried in the sand. It's on the verge of unforgiveable that Reva doesn't die. She should have, except, well, Disney doesn't have the guts. Mercy Mission Synopsis:Radio Announcer: Tragedy has struck Aleen. On the way down to the planet the clones see an Aleena riding a giant insect thing and says ‘Great, it's going to be another one of those planets' in case you'd forgotten that teenage boys are the absolute worst.  The design of the Aleena suggests that Brian Froud has snuck into Lucasfilm; let's see if we get a darkly whimsical fairytale allegory that will give kids nightmares.  Or even David Bowie's crotch (fingers crossed!).  3PO promptly falls down the hole and R2, who is always down for a weird LSD trip, is right behind him.  They start walking and are immediately swarmed by faeries.  They enter a subterranean world that immediately references Dagobah.  Revelation here we come.  3PO and R2 meet the Kindaloo, who look like an Ent and a Landstrider got lost in a Piers Anthony novel.   The Kindaloo see a potential solution in 3PO and send him to see Orphne.  The faeries coalesce into Orphne who promptly tastes 3PO in case you didn't know which kind of faerie queen we were dealing with.  Orphne says that 3PO will do what he is meant to do and gives a riddle.  Fortunately 3PO's speciality is riddles and Never Ending Story references, so he gets to work.  R2, who is basically Puck, gets there first and pees on the right floor symbol and unlocks a water elevator into a flower and 3PO and R2 are spit back onto the surface.  Underground vapors remember that they exist and commence to poison the Aleena.  R2 and 3PO, because they don't breathe, are able to seal the breach and bring peace back to Aleen.  A small Aleena does what we all wanted to do as kids and hugs R2 in thanks.  The clones are still being giant wangs.  The end.Nomad Droids Synopsis:We open on 3PO Spacetiming (™) with Padme to tell her of their adventures.  The cruiser gets attacked by Grievous.  R2 and 3PO “commandeer” a Y-wing and the two end up crashing on a nearby planet.  The locals attack, but they're only about 6” tall.  The Lilliputians proceed to pull a Gulliver's Travels on the two droids.  While bumping proverbial chests with the king, R2 is knocked over by 3PO and crushes him to death…   3PO decides to instill democracy upon them, but that quickly descends into voter fraud (no joke). The droids leave the planet on their newly repaired Y-wing, but don't have enough power, so they land on another nearby planet.  They're brought to this planet's leader, some repair droids doing a great and powerful OZ impression.  The locals revolt and destroy the hologram and lightning producing machine, causing R2 and 3PO to wander away as their power reserves fall to zero.   The clones and Jedi run across the pair.  We end the episode with 3PO telling their story to a captive and unwilling audience in Commander Wolffe. The Clone Wars: Season 4 Episodes 5 and 6: https://www.disneyplus.com/video/1d717a67-fdce-4404-aed6-3cca361e0946https://twitter.com/ClosingCrawlhttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/closing-crawl/id1530133296https://www.closingcrawl.com/On YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz9X-57K6-VV_GkUBaqvyeAMerch: https://bit.ly/spacetimetm

Then in the Airlock (22:08) they dive deep (deeeep) into Book of Boba Fett chapter 6, offering theories for the finale as well as analyzing the dichotomy of Jedi and Mandalorian philosophies. In the Omnibus (1:09:55) Jason surveys the post-apocalyptic genre. In the Hive Mind (1:22:25) Patrick Somerville, the writer and creator of HBO Max's Station Eleven, joins Jason to unpack the series, examine human connection and genre, and probe the role of the internet in our collective consciousness. In Nerd Out (1:59:57) a listener pitches us on the spooky oeuvre of Mike Flanagan, particularly Midnight Mass. And in the Endgame (2:03:36), Jason and Rosie choose a ‘Station Eleven,' a piece of art/media that has fundamentally shaped them. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Use the Try Harder, Luke, published by Eliezer Yudkowsky on the LessWrong. "When there's a will to fail, obstacles can be found." —John McCarthy I first watched Star Wars IV-VI when I was very young. Seven, maybe, or nine? So my memory was dim, but I recalled Luke Skywalker as being, you know, this cool Jedi guy. Imagine my horror and disappointment, when I watched the saga again, years later, and discovered that Luke was a whiny teenager. I mention this because yesterday, I looked up, on Youtube, the source of the Yoda quote: "Do, or do not. There is no try." Oh. My. Cthulhu. Along with the Youtube clip in question, I present to you a little-known outtake from the scene, in which the director and writer, George Lucas, argues with Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker: Luke: All right, I'll give it a try. Yoda: No! Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try. Luke raises his hand, and slowly, the X-wing begins to rise out of the water—Yoda's eyes widen—but then the ship sinks again. Mark Hamill: "Um, George..." George Lucas: "What is it now?" Mark: "So... according to the script, next I say, 'I can't. It's too big'." George: "That's right." Mark: "Shouldn't Luke maybe give it another shot?" George: "No. Luke gives up, and sits down next to Yoda—" Mark: "This is the hero who's going to take down the Empire? Look, it was one thing when he was a whiny teenager at the beginning, but he's in Jedi training now. Last movie he blew up the Death Star. Luke should be showing a little backbone." George: "No. You give up. And then Yoda lectures you for a while, and you say, 'You want the impossible'. Can you remember that?" Mark: "Impossible? What did he do, run a formal calculation to arrive at a mathematical proof? The X-wing was already starting to rise out of the swamp! That's the feasibility demonstration right there! Luke loses it for a second and the ship sinks back—and now he says it's impossible? Not to mention that Yoda, who's got literally eight hundred years of seniority in the field, just told him it should be doable—" George: "And then you walk away." Mark: "It's his friggin' spaceship! If he leaves it in the swamp, he's stuck on Dagobah for the rest of his miserable life! He's not just going to walk away! Look, let's just cut to the next scene with the words 'one month later' and Luke is still raggedly standing in front of the swamp, trying to raise his ship for the thousandth time—" George: "No." Mark: "Fine! We'll show a sunset and a sunrise, as he stands there with his arm out, straining, and then Luke says 'It's impossible'. Though really, he ought to try again when he's fully rested—" George: "No." Mark: "Five goddamned minutes! Five goddamned minutes before he gives up!" George: "I am not halting the story for five minutes while the X-wing bobs in the swamp like a bathtub toy." Mark: "For the love of sweet candied yams! If a pathetic loser like this could master the Force, everyone in the galaxy would be using it! People would become Jedi because it was easier than going to high school." George: "Look, you're the actor. Let me be the storyteller. Just say your lines and try to mean them." Mark: "The audience isn't going to buy it." George: "Trust me, they will." Mark: "They're going to get up and walk out of the theater." George: "They're going to sit there and nod along and not notice anything out of the ordinary. Look, you don't understand human nature. People wouldn't try for five minutes before giving up if the fate of humanity were at stake." Thanks for listening.     I love guest mixes because they expose me to tracks I might have otherwise missed in the monthly deluge of new releases. This new mix comes to us from Michael Southard(Time Rival) of Triplicate Records. I've included a few Time Rival tracks in mixes over the years so I was excited when Michael agreed to put together a mix of some of the best his label has to offer. Here's a blurb from Michael about this guest mix: Triplicate Records is an artist run independent record label founded in 2018 by Michael Southard (Time Rival), Bryan Kraft (BVSMV), and George Ernst (Suncastle).  We cover a lot of ground in regard to genres, but mostly stick to electronica, ambient and experimental.  “Vantage” is a collection of music from our back catalog that highlights the softer side of what we do.  Mixed and curated by Time Rival and featuring phenomenal new music from Ian Hawgood, Belly Full of Stars, Chris Randall, and much more. All of this music is available through our Bandcamp page:  https://triplicaterecords.bandcamp.com/   Thanks for an excellent set! Triplicate has also made a small run painted CD - R version of the mix available at their bandcamp page... https://triplicaterecords.bandcamp.com/merch/vantage-limited-edition-painted-cd-r Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : Ian Hawgood - Flutter Echo Refrain – 0:00:00 Belly Full of Stars - Pattern 4 – 0:05:20 Time Rival – Beech – 0:09:37 Belial Pelegrim – Subtext – 0:12:53 BVSMV, Running in Slow Motion - Memory to Media – 0:18:00 Acef Stripe - Image 7: Dagobah – 0:22:20 Suncastle - The Rooms in Here are Enveloped – 0:24:51 Chaircrusher – Insular – 0:32:22 SURVEY CHANNEL - Outside the Coding Region – 0:39:02 Crest of the Syndicate – Lattermath – 0:44:58 Station Zero - Numb Hand - 0:46:34 Minimal_Drone*GRL - Raspberry Ripple – 0:50:24 Chorchill - Tea Bags – 0:52:46 Chris Randall - Synthetic Instinct – 0:54:59 End – 1:00:00

Because this was the darkest movie in the OG Trilogy; The Empire Strikes Back. Val and Brother D braved through the freezing ice planet of Hoth (Brother D hates the cold!), encountered the swamps of Dagobah, survived asteroid fields, and marveled at Lando's chill pad in the sky on Bespin. Vader is not messing around this time. This one is a rough ride, but you're in good hands... probably.

Join Anders, Colleen and Daniel as we parkour through the swamps of Dagobah to discuss Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back! We discuss how this film is so perfect that even George Lucas hasn't felt the need to completely redo it through edits. We all agree that this is our favorite Star Wars movie, is more or less the perfect example of a sequel, and that Han and Leia are ON FIRE throughout this film. This movie does a great deal to expand on our concept of Force and how the galaxy fares under the rule of the Empire. We laugh about the pitfalls of retcons with Luke and Leia's twincest kiss.
