This episode marks the HALFWAY point in the original Classic Marvel Star Wars series that ran from 1977-1986! We break down Issue 54: “STARFIRE RISING” from September 1981, which serves as a continuation of repurposed JOHN CARTER, WARLORD OF MARS artwork created for the cancelled comic series. Not wanting to waste unused artwork which was done by the same artists as the Star Wars series, Chris Claremont was brought in to write a new Star Wars story based on that existing art. Then Walter Simonson adapted art to fit these issues 53 and 54, and Viola you have new Star Wars!    We are not sure why this issue is called STARFIRE RISING, but it should have been called CRUSH ON LEIA, since the story revolves around Aron Peacebringer (John Carter) having an existential crisis over his adulterous thoughts on Princess Leia. You can tell the moment the art switches from repurposed John Carter to Star Wars towards the end of the issue. Please enjoy.   Today in Star Wars History - May 29, 2019   After a thirty-three-year hiatus, Marvel Comics continues their classic Star Wars series with the release of issue #108 - Forever Crimson. We covered this issue in episode 495 since it was a direct continuation of issue #50: Crimson Forever which came out in 1981. Forever Crimson, published in celebration of Marvel's 80th anniversary, encompasses five short stories that feature Jaxxon, Amaiza Foxtrain, and the droid-hating Valance the Hunter.     #54 “STARFIRE RISING"   Release Date: September 22, 1981 Writer: Chris Claremont Artwork: Walt Simonson, Carmine Infantino Coloring: Glynis Wein Cover Art:  Walt Simonson   Imperial General Sk'ar captures Aron Peacebringer and Princess Leia. As the two heroes struggle against their bonds, Aron discovers that his friend Delois, has turned traitor and joined forces with Sk'ar. Now Delois and Skar plan to bomb Aron's government - The Calian Confederacy.    When all seems lost, Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and Aron's best friend Kéral Longknife arrive to fight the Imperials. Leia finds Sk'ar's anti-matter bomb and begins defusing it, but will she diffuse it in time or will this world be wiped out just like Alderaan?    We take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. We break down issue 51: Resurrection of Evil from June 1981! There is a new super weapon being constructed called the Tarkin. Our heroes are sent to bring down this technological terror, and at the same time there is a plot within the Empire to kill Darth Vader!   In the past, Marvel has tied-in Kenner action figures and playsets. Is that what they are doing here with the Scout Walker vehicle? Or was it because they wanted to feature the cool 2-legged walker seen in The Empire Strikes Back for 2 seconds.   Today in Star Wars History   Disney+ streams the episode, “Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa” from The Book of Boba Fett which Guest stars Danny Trejo as the Rancor Keeper. (Does Danny Trejo make an appearance in this episode's Marvel comic?)   In “The Streets of Mos Espa” the Hutt Twins come to Boba Fett's palace and offer their apologies for sending Black Krrsantan to kill him.   This Book of Boba Fett  episode also features the BEST Behind the scenes Easter Egg ever! During the speeder chase where the mods were pursuing the Mayor's majordomo, one of the mods crashes through a Ralph McQuarrie painting of Jabba's court from Return of the Jedi.     #51 “RESURRECTION OF EVIL"   Release Date: June 16, 1981 Writer: David Michelinie Artwork: Walt Simonson, Tom Palmer Cover Art:  Walt Simonson   General Rieekan receives word from Rebel spies that the Galactic Empire is constructing a new superweapon known as the Tarkin. Realizing the danger the new weapon poses, Rieekan sends for Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, Lando C and the droids. The Rebel heroes are sent to infiltrate the Tarkin, however Darth Vader observes as they arrive and sets events in motion to capture his long sought after adversary, Luke Skywalker. But little does the Dark Lord know that some of his own men are secretly plotting against him due to his vicious punishments imposed against their fellow Imperial officers.   We take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. With all the talk about Crimson Jack in Skeleton Crew we felt this was a perfect time to share another Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics episode! Issue #108 “Forever Crimson!” (2019), is a special continuation of Issue #50 “The Crimson Forever” (1981). This was part of Marvel's 80th Anniversary celebration in 2019 where they added this issue 33 years after the classic Star Wars series ended in 1986.    Richard and Sarah break down “Forever Crimson!” - it's story, artwork, and the HUGE amount of Star Wars EU Easter eggs! Jaxxon and Amaiza are back! Valance the Hunter and Domina Tagge make an appearance. This comic even references vornskr and the witches of Dathomir. Could there be more references to pop culture in this comic than SKELETON CREW?? Let's find out.   We recommend watching the video version (above) of this episode which contains the full comic as we page through it.   #108 “FOREVER CRIMSON"   Release Date: May 29, 2019 Writer: Matthew Rosenberg Artwork: Giuseppe Camuncoli, Andrea Broccardo, Kerry Gammill, Ze Carlos, Jan Duursema, Stefano Landini, Luke Ross, Cam Smith, Chris Sotomayer, and Leonard Kirk Cover Art:  Walt Simonson and Antonio Fabela   The cosmic civil war is over! The Empire has fallen. The tyrannical Dark Lords of the Sith who ruled the galaxy, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, are destroyed, and the heroic Rebel Alliance has restored freedom to the star systems with the formation of the New Republic.   But a long-forgotten threat, one more terrible than even the Sith, is still out there in the wilds of deep space, and its return could annihilate all life in the galaxy! Once again, only the freedom fighters Princess Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo can hope to stand against the forces of evil. This is their story! We take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. DeMatteis Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Tom Palmer, Glynis Wein Cover Art:  Ed Hannigan and Tom Palmer   While Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca are off to rescue Han Solo, the Millennium Falcon encounters problems with a warp engine while in hyperspace which causes the ship to enter another dimension.    They come upon a mysterious floating domed city, and discover that this city is the psychic creation of Lando's long lost hero - Cody Sunn-Childe. Years ago, Cody turned his back on his violent and savage past when he discovered his powerful mystical ability and so created his City of Dreams to live with his friends in peace away from the Galactic Civil War.    Lando rejects Cody's views claiming that there are times that violence is necessary to win a war, and what good is this power and hidden city when there are millions of people on the other side who are dying because of the Empire.    Meanwhile, the Empire has located the city and Cody has a life-altering decision to make.     As usual, we take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. In this King-Size episode, we dive into Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics King-Size Annual #1! (December 1979) This one-shot story is double the size of a regular issue, and is split into two parts: "The Long Hunt" and "A Dual of Eagles". We will be talking about both with our special guest, Chris Alexander (Star Wars Origami author). Richard, Sarah and Chris discuss this comic and find FTOOM! Plus, what is up with our heroes mingling with the likes of fantasy characters - are those werewolves?? We all remark on the artwork - it is SO MUCH better than previous issues. Hmmm, could that be due to new artists? We think so. Do you remember this comic as a kid, like Richard and Chris? Or are you new to these stories - like Sarah? Classic Marvel Star Wars Comics #27 “Return of the Hunter!” is perhaps the BEST issue so far in this comic series!! Bounty hunter Valance appears, bringing with him all the melodramatic feels of his half human, half cyborg self. We were blown away by the resonating themes and action as Valance confronts Luke, goding him on with insulting name in the galaxy, "droid lover!" Luke and Threepio have some great buddy moments together too, and the three characters are pitted against each other in a final confrontation with a surprising end. Richard and Sarah discuss the comic and find FTOOM! Fast Facts (classic comic things that appear now in Star Wars books, comics and films) - including Valance appearing in a NEW and currently ongoing Marvel comics series Star Wars Bounty Hunters. Watch the Unedited Episode and See the Comic Book Pages https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laPOqUkviGU   Or read the comic book here!   Show Notes:   Title: "RETURN OF THE HUNTER" Release Date: June 26, 1979 Writer: Archie Goodwin Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Bob Wiacek, Petra Goldberg Cover Art: Carmine Infantino Editor: Jim Shooter, Archie Goodwin   Synopsis: This time Luke is hunted by the bounty hunter, Valance (That we originally met in issue 16). Forced to live as a cyborg due to injuries sustained from an aerial torpedo, Valance's mission is to find Luke Skywalker. Not only is Luke a droid-owner, but he also apparently treats them as equals, which Valance finds repulsive.    Meanwhile, Luke has taken C-3PO with him and is mapping out the perimeter of the Galactic Empire's most recent blockade. He deftly maneuvers his ship out of the way of an oncoming Imperial cruiser and hides out on the planet of Junction and also looks for a  trading post so that he can find parts needed to make repairs to R2-D2.    Luke and C-3PO arrive at a salvage yard where they are confronted by Valance and a battle is underway! Will this confrontation end in an emotional struggle? Stay tuned and find out!   As usual, we take our Facebook Group Comments on the cover into account as we analyze this issue. Richard and Sarah discuss the comic and find FTOOM! Fast Facts (classic comic things that appear now in Star Wars books, comics and films.) Title: "DOOM MISSION" Release Date: May 22, 1979 Writer: Archie Goodwin Artwork: Carmine Infantino, Bob Wiacek, Petra Goldberg Cover Art: Carmine Infantino / Bob Wiacek Consulting Editor: Jim Shooter   Synopsis: Luke and Leia are being attacked by two TIE fighters. Just as the situation appears hopeless, X-wings arrive and destroy the two enemy fighters.   Once Luke and Leia get back to the base, they inform General Dodonna about the TIE fighters cleverly entering the gaseous atmosphere of Yavin. Since Yavin's atmosphere is too thick for conventional signalling, they deduce that the House of Tagge and the Empire have developed some new signalling technology and set up a launch station within the gas giant. Luke goes on a mission to retrieve one of the signalling units from a downed TIE fighter, and R2-D2 is critically damaged in the process.    With no other choice, Luke sets out in a captured TIE fighter, fitted with the new signalling unit, through the atmosphere of Yavin to the House of Tagge Launch Station within the dangerous Yavin atmosphere.
