August 16-22 In Section 89, the Lord gave Joseph Smith the Word of Wisdom, which we often take to be a list of do's and don'ts about how to care for our bodies, but there is more deep doctrine there then we often see, and we will share some of those ah-ha's and surprises with you in this episode, two of which you may have never considered before.

Doctrine and Covenants 88 is a gargantuan revelation. We set the stage with Joseph Smith and Sections 86 & 87 for the reception of "The Olive Leaf". The Section starts out with the title, "Lord of Sabaoth." We cover this and talk about the Deuteronimists in Jerusalem at the time of Lehi. One thing to notice in this section is its framing of hierarchy through the Sun, Moon, Stars, and the Earth. It is very, very, similar to that often talked about chapter 3 in the Book of Abraham. You know, the one with "Kolob." We cover that. Website - https://www.cwicmedia.com Come Follow Me LDS Doctrine and Covenants 88

August 9-15 Maurine, I used to look forward to the tail end of our Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts in Missouri because my Dad, a brilliant and world-renowned geologist and geological engineer, and Darrell Ownby, part of our family and a world-class ceramic engineer, and Nord Gale, a celebrated, favorite professor and brilliant microbiologist and Harold Romero, also a brilliant physicist, would stay at the table and discuss deep gospel questions. Many times, the conversations would go way over my head, as they talked about creation, celestial worlds, spirit elements, atomic elements and the qualities of light—but I tried to follow along as best I could. Hey, I was only 12 years old! But this was the beginning of my yearning, thirst and hunger for knowledge. I could not get enough of it. These discussions around the table were amazing. And then I was introduced to Section 88 of the Doctrine and Covenants. I was blown away. This deep water is the subject of this episode.

Every so often, the Lord gives us a small glimpse of His boundless “majesty and power” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:47) through sweeping revelations to His prophets. Doctrine and Covenants 88 is such a revelation—one about light and glory and kingdoms that can make our earthly cares seem insignificant by comparison. Even if we can't grasp all of what the Lord is teaching us, we can at least sense that there's far more to eternity than what we now comprehend. Of course, the Lord didn't speak of these grand mysteries to intimidate us or make us feel small. In fact, He promised, “The day shall come when you shall comprehend even God” (verse 49; italics added). Perhaps it was to that lofty end that the Lord urged His Saints in Kirtland to form the School of the Prophets. “Organize yourselves,” He said. “Prepare every needful thing; and establish … a house of God” (verse 119). For it is within God's holy house—and in our homes—that He can, more than anywhere else, lift our vision beyond the mortal world, “unveil his face unto [us],” and prepare us to “abide a celestial glory” (verses 68, 22).
Why do we need church? Why do we need organized religion? Listen up and find out why seeking on our own isn't enough.

oin us this week as we share some personal experiences as it relates to these sections of the Doctrine & Covenants. Come Follow Me Section Summary:Christmas Day is usually a time to ponder messages like “peace on earth” and “good will toward men” (see Luke 2:14). But on December 25, 1832, Joseph Smith's mind was occupied with the threat of war. South Carolina had just defied the United States government and was preparing for battle. And the Lord revealed to Joseph that this was only the beginning: “War,” He declared, “will be poured out upon all nations” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:2). It seemed like this prophecy would be fulfilled very soon. But then it wasn't. Within just a few weeks, South Carolina and the U.S. government reached a compromise, and war was averted. But revelation is not always fulfilled at the time or in the way we expect. Nearly 30 years later, long after Joseph Smith was martyred and the Saints had moved west, South Carolina did rebel and civil war followed. Since then, war throughout the world has caused “the earth [to] mourn” (Doctrine and Covenants 87:6). While the prophecy was ultimately fulfilled, the value of this revelation is less in predicting when calamity will come and more in teaching what to do when it does. The counsel is the same in 1831, 1861, and 2021: “Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved” (verse 8).
Why does our loving God allow pain, suffering, and evil people to exist? Well, listen up and find out.
"The Higher and the Lower Priesthoods" Section 84 gives us one of the best examples of The Higher and Lower Laws. Each of the Melchizedek and Aaronic Priesthoods is necessary as they represent "Heaven and Earth". We explore the themes of the temple, Zion, the Last Days and bring them into context with the prophets Jeremiah, Daniel and Jesus as well. August 2-8 How distressingly human it is that some people want to build Zion and want an inheritance in Zion, but don't want to keep the very laws that create Zion. That's like saying, I want to live in the Lord's kingdom, but I want to do it my way. That's what was happening to some people who went to build Zion in Missouri, and that is the context behind one of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants that we will look at in this episode.

This week, we try to keep it between the lines in our new "living room" set up. We discuss section 84, "the priesthood" section. Many men are returning from their missions and sharing success stories. They have much joy in The Lord and their labors. The Lord reveals to them more about the priesthood, what it means to hold the priesthood, and it's power. We discuss the power of the priesthood that women have. This section is not just for the men, but for the sisters also. Join us this week as we get used to our new set up.Come Follow Me Historical Setting:Ever since the priesthood was restored in 1829, Latter-day Saints had been blessed by that sacred power. They were baptized, confirmed, and called to serve by priesthood authority, much like we are today. But having access to priesthood power is not the same thing as completely understanding it, and God had more He wanted His Saints to understand—particularly with the coming restoration of temple ordinances. The 1832 revelation on the priesthood, now Doctrine and Covenants 84, expanded the Saints' vision of what the priesthood really is. And it can do the same for us today. After all, there is a lot to learn about the divine power that holds “the key of the knowledge of God,” that makes manifest “the power of godliness,” and that prepares us to “see the face of God, even the Father, and live”.
July 26-August 1 We were just in Nauvoo a few days ago leading a tour. On Sunday morning we attended Church with all the missionaries serving there. It was a beautiful sight to see! They were full of joy, enthusiasm, radiance, happiness and just plain excitement for being there. We talked to a number of the senior couples for a few minutes. “Oh, this is our seventh mission,” one sister said. “We love this work so much.” Another said, “Our only regret is we only get to serve here for two years. We so wish it could be longer!” Could these missionaries in Nauvoo be a testimony to the fulfillment of promises given by the Lord in Section 84 of the Doctrine and Covenants? We'll talk about that in this episode.

This week we discuss how scriptures that are specifically given to individuals at the time, can be applied to our lives and our circumstances. For example, section 81 was originally given to Jesse Gause. However, he later left the church and this revelation, when published substituted Frederick G. Williams name for Jesse Gause's name. We discuss the importance of standing in the office in which you have been called and doing it faithfully. Sometimes that is a calling in church, a calling in life, or a situation you are placed in. Where much is given, much is required. It is true, those who have been given more or know more should be expected to do more. Finally, we discuss who is supposed to care for those that stand in need. Who has claim upon the church or the Lord's storehouse? Who has the responsibility to watch over the down trodden? Join us this week as we continue to apply the scriptures to our personal lives.
In section 76, the Lord expressed how much He wants to reveal truth to us (see verses 7–10). Read the scriptures with faith that He can and will reveal to you “the things of God” (verse 12) that you need to know. Then record the insights you receive “while [you are] yet in the Spirit” (verses 28, 80, 113).
July 19-25 “Peter may have given the best description of the Savior's mortal ministry in five words when he referred to Jesus, “who went about doing good” (M. Russell Ballard, Precious Gifts). You want to know what to do with your life? There it is, simply put. If we are to be like him, we go about doing good. In Doctrine and Covenants Section 81, we are given the same charge with more detail: “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hand down, and strengthen the feeble knees” (Doctrine and Covenants 81:5). That is a very vivid picture.
In the Come Follow Me LDS episode for Doctrine and Covenants we review Section 77 as Joseph Smith answers (his own questions?) on the Book of Revelation. We cover some of the symbolism with some of his answers and review some numerology with squares and cubes. Website - https://www.cwicmedia.com Come Follow Me LDS Doctrine and Covenants 77-80
July 12-18 In the last two podcasts we have talked about the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible and the tremendous blessings that came to the Prophet Joseph and to Sidney Rigdon as they carefully studied, pondered and meticulously prayed over the Bible. One of the great blessings that came was The Vision of the Three Degrees of Glory. In this week's lesson we get a micro-specific peek into the process of coming to understand a very difficult passage of scripture. The Prophet is asking the Lord very specific questions about Chapters 4 and 7 through 11 in the book of Revelation. And it's not so much what was revealed to Joseph that was important to us as it was the pattern for studying the scriptures and receiving personal revelation.
