April 28-May 4We live in a time when the Church of Jesus Christ has been well established and we are used to talking in terms of large numbers, general conferences translated into scores of languages simultaneously, missionaries serving in diverse countries all over the world and the Kingdom of God on the earth organized unlike any worldly entity. We are used to thinking in terms of the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Church Headquarters, the Conference Center, Temple Square—but in the era we are talking about today, the early part of 1831, none of these things were yet a reality. When Joseph and Emma arrived in Kirtland, Ohio in February, 1831, the successful missionary efforts of Parley P. Pratt and his companions had just doubled the entire membership of the Church to about 250 people!

April 21-27Robert Matthews said, “Many have supposed that the translation of the Bible [what we call the JST] was only a sideline, a matter of personal, but passing interest to the Prophet Joseph.”We agree that too many misunderstand the importance of this work. How many in the Church understand what the JST is or use it regularly? But, as Matthews said, to neglect or ignore that is mistaken. “Joseph Smith was commanded of the Lord to do this great work; that it was central to the Restoration, to the establishment of the dispensation of the fulness of times; and that to neglect or ignore the role of the JST is to miss a major dimension of the work of God in this dispensation”.
Join us as we discuss the teachings of Dr. D. Todd Harrison on the Doctrine and Covenants 27-28Dr. Harrison's lesson examines Doctrine and Covenants sections 27 and 28, emphasizing Christ's ongoing testimony of the restored Church and the divine calling of Joseph Smith. Section 27 clarifies the sacrament's symbolic nature and anticipates a future messianic feast, while affirming the roles of key figures in the Restoration. Section 28 addresses prophetic authority, establishing Joseph Smith as the sole recipient of commandments for the Church, and instructs Oliver Cowdery regarding his teaching responsibilities and preaching to the Lamanites. The lesson concludes with an invitation for all to embrace the gospel, whether new, returning, or seeking deeper commitment.
April 14-20This week we are studying that magnificent gift the Savior gave to us in the atonement and resurrection.

This week we learn: These sections are full of mission calls and instructions from the Lord! Sections 30–36 focus on urging individuals to step up and share the gospel with enthusiasm and faith. This week we learn about preparing for the spiritual harvest and working together to bring others to Christ. It's a reminder that sharing the gospel brings joy, blessings, and the opportunity to make a real difference.I am called to be a witness of Jesus Christ.Whether or not you have a formal calling as a missionary, you can be a witness of Jesus Christ “at all times, and in all things, and in all places”If I build my life on the Savior's gospel, I will not fall.I should focus more on the things of God than the things of the earth.Parley P. Pratt had been a member of the Church for about a month when he was called “into the wilderness” to preach the gospel (Doctrine and Covenants 32:2). Thomas B. Marsh had been a member for even less time than that when he was told, “The hour of your mission is come” Orson Pratt, Edward Partridge, and many others had likewise barely been baptized when their mission calls came. Perhaps there's a lesson in this pattern for us today: if you know enough to accept the restored gospel by baptism, you know enough to share it with others.Fun podcast for kidsFun Book of Mormon podcast for kids Game podcast
April 7-13Parley Parker Pratt was 16 months younger than the Prophet Joseph and he was born about 140 miles east of Palmyra, New York. Parley was born curious about religion. He said to his father one day when he was 18 years old and they were laboring together in the forest:"Father, how is it there is so manifest a difference between the ancient and modern disciples of Jesus Christ and their doctrines? If, for instance, I had lived in the days of the Apostles, and believed in Jesus Christ, and had manifested a wish to become his disciple, Peter or his brethren would have said to me, 'Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for REMISSION OF SINS, and you SHALL receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.' I should then have known definitely and precisely what to do to be saved. "Now, father…I believe in Jesus; I wish to serve him and keep his commandments… How…can I observe the ordinances of God and keep his commandments?"“To these inquiries my father could give no satisfactory answer…I still continued to ponder upon these things, and to search the Scriptures to learn how to be saved.” (Pratt, Parley P. Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt, Revised and Enhanced Edition, edited by Scot Facer Proctor and Maurine Jensen Proctor, Deseret Book Company, Salt Lake City, 2000, pp 10-11.)Parley would not rest until he could discover the right path to the Lord Jesus Christ.

March 31-April 6By the time Section 29 of the Doctrine and Covenants was given, the fledgling Church was just over five months old. Rumors and false claims were circulating faster than convert numbers. What a strategic time for the adversary of all righteousness to attack the young flock and scatter them as fast as he could—to try to stop this little flock from growing. The Church only had less than 100 members. Can we even imagine this? Most who are listening to this podcast are from a ward or branch that is bigger than that. My own elder's quorum here in Alpine, Utah has 175 members! But, as we have said in the past, out of small things proceedeth that which is great. The Lord knows how to work with small numbers!
Armor of God podcast for KidsArmor of God podcast for childrenAll Things Must Be Done in Order”Doctrine and Covenants 27–28The armor of god is what this episode mainly focuses on. Revelation was still a relatively new concept for the Saints as the Restoration continued to unfold. Early Church members knew that the Prophet Joseph Smith could receive revelation for the Church. But could others? Questions like this became critical when Hiram Page, one of the Eight Witnesses of the gold plates, believed he had received revelations for the Church. Many faithful Saints believed that these revelations were from God. The Lord responded by teaching that in His Church “all things must be done in order” (Doctrine and Covenants 28:13). This week we will learn this story and learn that only the prophet can receive revelation for the church. The scriptures teach that we should put on the “whole armor” of God (see Ephesians 6:11–18 and D&C 27:15–18). When we study the scriptures and pray, it's like we put on armor that helps keep us safe.Helmet of SalvationA helmet protects the head. We keep our mind safe when we follow Jesus and do what He wants us to do.Shield of FaithFaith in Jesus Christ is like a shield of protection. When we believe in Jesus and try to be like Him, we can make good choices, even when things are hard.Breastplate of RighteousnessThe breastplate protects the heart. When we love God with all our heart, we try to keep His commandments. We are blessed when we choose the right.Etc. You're listening to Come Follow Me Kids! A Come Follow Me Podcast. How the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible leads to revelation
March 24-30In August of 1830, Newel Knight and his wife Sally visited Joseph and Emma in Harmony, Pennsylvania. Since neither woman had yet been confirmed, they agreed to perform the ordinance and have the sacrament together. Joseph set out to buy some wine for the occasion, when after he had traveled only a short distance, he was met by a heavenly messenger with a new instruction. The Church was rolling forth with understanding coming line upon line.
DC 27-28 Historical Context
How does understanding the interconnected purposes of the sacrament, as presented in Doctrine & Covenants 27, deepen our appreciation for this sacred ordinance? In this episode Matthew O. Richardson, professor of Church history and doctrine, discusses several key themes and gospel principles related to the ordinance of the sacrament. He presents three specific purposes: remembering the past, specifically the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ; looking forward to future redemption; and providing safety and protection in the present. Further, he discusses the historical context and symbolism of the sacramental emblems and connects them to putting on the armor of God and illustrates its role in providing spiritual protection. In understanding the symbolism of these emblems, we can enhance our worship experience and foster a closer relationship with the Savior. March 17-23After the sacred gathering of nearly four dozen Saints in the Whitmer Home in Fayette, New York on Tuesday, April 6, 1830, this tiny band was given the commission to take the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to all the world. What an overwhelming task! How could so few bless so many? And yet, the Lord knew who He was calling and what various converts would do. One eager young man, twenty-two-year-old Samuel Harrison Smith, younger brother of the Prophet Joseph, stepped forward and volunteered to start the work. And within 100 days, a remarkable woman was called to give her gifts and talents to the kingdom—Emma Hale Smith.

When the Church was organized, the Lord taught His Saints about sacred ordinances, including baptism and the sacrament. Sacred ordinances help us become like the Savior.Obeying God's word through His prophets will give me divine protection.Doctrine and Covenants 21:4–9 contains invitations to follow the Lord's prophet and powerful promises for people who do.
March 10-16When that group of 40 or more gathered in the 20 by 30-foot Whitmer cabin that April 6, 1830 to organize the “only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth” (Doctrine and Covenants 1:30), they could not have entirely foreseen what lay ahead for this church that would, as the prophet Daniel said, “roll forth to fill the whole earth” (See Daniel 2: 31-45), but they did know they were about a great work inspired by God Himself. Let's take you to that scene in this episode.
Prior to their exodus west, nearly 90,000 converts journeyed across the seas to join the saints in America. In this episode Fred E. Woods, professor of Church history and doctrine, details the faith and immigration experiences of these saints as he discusses his recent publication Ports to Posts: Latter-day Saints Gathering in the Nineteenth Century. Professor Woods explores the port of Liverpool, England, the main point of embarkment for many converts, examines sailing conditions across the Atlantic for converts and non-converts alike, and details the arrival of these early pioneers into American harbors and the various posts they made contact with along the way. In addition to exploring how these converts gathered unto Zion, Professor Woods shares why so many members left their homelands to “be gathered in unto one place” (Doctrine & Covenants 29:7). March 3-9Martin Harris found himself in a tight spot when he agreed to put up the money to pay for the printing of the Book of Mormon. He began to have doubts and “stagger in confidence” at the amount of debt he was entering into, whose payback would depend entirely on sales of the Book of Mormon. He was a wealthy and respected farmer in Palmyra. He had repented of his sins and become one of the Three Witnesses, but now he was putting up his farm as collateral and everything was at stake. What would he lose if people didn't pay for copies of the Book of Mormon and redeem his debt? Everything! What a trial of his faith.
February 24-March 2The Doctrine and Covenants is a book full of affirmations that individuals count—that each of us is important in the sight of God. Message after message is to individuals, some we have heard of like Oliver Cowdery or Hyrum Smith, and some to less familiar people like Leman Copley or Northrop Sweet, but then the Lord often adds this note: What I say unto one, I say unto all. But if that is not enough to let us know WE count; He gives us these 12 words in our lesson this week: “Remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God.”
Come Follow MeCome Follow Me For Kids“Upon You My Fellow Servants”Doctrine and Covenants 12–17; Joseph Smith—History 1:66–75The Aaronic Priesthood Is Restored John the Baptist visits Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdry and restores the priesthood on earth. This week we are going to learn that the keys of the priesthood are a super important a part of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Priesthood keys are given to act in God's name, by his power and authority. For example God has given us keys to baptize and bless the sacrament Because these keys were restored to God's church, we enjoy many blessings made through covenants that bring us closer to Jesus Christ.Joseph and Oliver worked hard translating the gold plates into english for many days. They came to the part of the Book of Mormon where Jesus Christ appeared to the Nephites. They read that Jesus gave Nephi the priesthood power and authority to baptize. Joseph and Oliver knew that the authority to baptize was not on the earth in their day.Joseph and Oliver wanted to know more about the authority to baptize, could anyone do it? How did it work? They walked to the trees near Joseph's house. They prayed and asked God about the authority to baptize in Christ's name. While they were praying, an angel descended from heaven in a cloud of light. The angel was John the Baptist, John the Baptist had the Aaronic Priesthood—God's authorityto baptize. Jesus was baptized to set anexample for us, and John was the person that baptized Jesus! Now as an angel, John the Baptist put his hands on Joseph and Oliver's heads and said, "Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins." The power and authority of the Aaronic Priesthood was restored to the earth! Why did an angel need to come and give it to them? Because no one on earth had that power. John the Baptist then told Joseph and Oliver they should baptize each other, so they wentto the River and and were baptized. They both felt the power of the Holy Ghost and after this, understanding the scriptures was way easier! And now, because the priesthood authority is back on the earth, we can be baptized like Jesus was, repent from bad choices, and receive the power of the Holy Ghost! February 17-23I love the natural unfolding of the restoration. Much of what happens is a result of questions that come to the minds of Joseph and Oliver in the course of the translation of the record. The more carefully you study the translation and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon, the more you are amazed at the gift and power of God that was given to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery as they translated the record. These are two very young men: Joseph is 23 and Oliver is 22 years old!
February 10-16As you read the Doctrine and Covenants, section 10 seems out of place chronologically. Since it talks about Martin Harris and the translation of the 116 pages, shouldn't it come after Section 3? What happened? We'll tell you in this episode.
February 3-9 Just a few months after the 116 manuscript pages of the Book of Lehi were lost, a young man arrived in Manchester, New York. He had dark brown eyes, a slight build, a prominent lower jaw, high forehead and, as one described, a roman nose. He was hired to be a teacher in New York's Joint District 11. The small frame schoolhouse was located just about a mile south of the Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith Farm on Stafford Road. In this first teaching job, he had 107 little “scholars.” Little did he know he would become a teacher for millions yet unborn. His name…was Oliver Cowdery.
The Spirit of Revelation-Come Follow MeThe story of Oliver Cowdry and how he became Joseph Smiths scribe. This week's lesson will help children learn what we can do to actively receive the Holy Ghost in our daily lives. “Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.”-D&C 8:2“This Is the Spirit of Revelation”Doctrine and Covenants 6–9Oliver discovered, isn't just for prophets like Joseph Smith. It's for anyone who wants it and seeks it diligently. Oliver still had a lot to learn, but he knew enough to take his next step. January 27-February 2 Joseph does not shy away from humbly including Section 3 in the Doctrine and Covenants, where he is severely chastened by the Lord for a failing. He could have hid it or polished it up to preserve his image, but because he is so honest, we not only get to see firsthand, the spiritual development of a prophet, but he also gives us all a deep teaching: “You should not have feared man more than God” (Doctrine and Covenants 3:7).
January 20-26 Do we know every scripture that Moroni told Joseph Smith on his September 21 visit in 1823? Our first answer is, “They are listed right here in Joseph Smith's history.” Yet Oliver Cowdery told us there are many more. And here's another surprise—all but two are from the Old Testament.
January 13-19 In every dispensation of the world a witness is called to testify to the people of that day and age that he has seen God and has talked with Him and has received instructions and guidance from Him. That witness is called to testify in his day that God lives, that He is real, that He cares about His children, that He hears and answers our prayers and that He has a work for us to do. Faith comes and is increased by listening to and heeding the testimony of that witness. In our day, in this, the dispensation of the fulness of times, that witness is Joseph Smith.
January 6-12 Hasn't this been a glorious year in carefully studying the Book of Mormon as individuals and families? Did you notice time and time again that the lesson for that week was just the answer you needed for yourself, your family or for the current situation in the world? Have you found that you have drawn closer to Christ in this past year of study? It's hard to leave our intense Book of Mormon studies behind, but we are now given the immense privilege of studying the Doctrine and Covenants and the early history of the Church and the Restoration of God's Kingdom here upon the earth in our day. What could be more exciting?
Doctrine and Covenants History short
Scripture study!!! Well, sort of. We're talking about the codenames contained in the Doctrine & Covenants sections 78, 82, 92, 96, 103, 104, and 105. Names like Gazelam, Ahashdah, Pelagoram, Mahalaleel, Mahemson, Shederlaomach, and (most importantly) Talents, all appear concerning the Secret Combination of the United Firm, or United Order. We discuss the history of the names, who's involved, and why they appear in the first place. Huge thanks to Gene Judson of Latter-daily Digest for inviting us onto the show and suggesting the topic! If you remember back to the first episode, I ever did Drew Briney it was about an amazing project that he was working on making an annotated version of the Doctrine & Covenants. Well today Drew comes back on to the podcast to have a conversation about the latest installment of that project, D&C 42. D&C 42 is all about Consecration and United Order. As we breakdown how Drew went about annotating this particular section, we dive head long into what the early leaders of the LDS Church thought about these principles, how it was lived in both the Missouri & Utah periods and what our responsibilities we have as Mormons today have in regards to Consecration & United Order. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support
Welcome to our first week studying the Book of Mormon together! This week we are studying the Introductory Pages of the Book of Mormon. What a fun week of scripture. Its introductory pages describe a backstory unlike any other—including visits from angels, an ancient record buried for centuries in a hillside, and a young man translating the record by the power of God. Welcome to Come Follow Me Kids! If you are joining us for the first time as we begin to study the Book of Mormon - welcome! And if you have been with us all along as we've studied the Doctrine & Covenants, the Old Testament and The New Testament - welcome back! We are soooo excited to study the Book of Mormon this year. Joseph Smith called the Book of Mormon the keystone to our religion! This is a podcast for primary aged kids who attend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This week the children will learn: Studying the Book of Mormon can strengthen my faith in Jesus Christ. We will study the title page, the introduction, Joseph Smiths testimony, and the testimony of the 11 witnesses. We will also learn how Joseph obtained the plates. And most importantly we will learn how we can gain our own testimonies of the Book of Mormon and also how we can be witnesses for it as well.
The Book of Mormon might be the scripture FOR the restoration, but the D&C is the scripture produced BY the restoration. It is a unique book of scripture and requires a different approach to extract its powerful truths.

Look anybody who is anybody in Mormon Fundamentalist Circles knows who Drew Briney is. He is perhaps the most prolific Mormon Fundamentalist author we have. With his book Adam-God Teachings certainly being one of the premier works on that subject. On this episode Drew and I have a conversation on his latest project which could be his most ambitious and important work to date. It is an annotated version of the Doctrine & Covenants. The Doctrine & Covenants is the most unique book of scripture in all of Christendom and maybe even religion as a whole. No other set of scripture has the Lord speaking so clearly as the Doctrine & Covenants. Drew and I discuss what his inspiration for this project was, what he has learned in doing the research for this book, how this version of the Doctrine& Covenants is laid out and finally what you can do to get your hands on a copy. https://preview.mailerlite.com/j9v8l1u7u9/2185599591095735430/v2n5/ --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

Today's episode continues the discussion on Polygamy with the (in)famous revelation still canonized in Mormon/LDS scripture as Section 132 of the Doctrine & Covenants. Mike sets up the historical & personal context of the timing of this revelation and the problematic ideas presented in it as coming from God including how God views women, redefining adultery and other moral issues, and the various rules and justifications given by God to practice polygamy. Mike goes on to show that Joseph admits himself that polygamy is something he wanted, and despite being the receiver of the various specific rules defined by God, he nevertheless proceeds to break every one of them. Finally, Mike goes over the many apologetics around this section of the Doctrine & Covenants and the problems with most of the arguments attempting to justify the revelation, Joseph's polygamy, and the resulting polygamy among many of the branches of Mormonism, some continuing to this day. Gary has been a good friend to Matt and I for many years. Every time that we get together I love to hear all the stories that Gary has to tell. Recently while we were talking he shared his story of reuniting with his biological family in his 60s. I asked him to come on the podcast and share his story. Join me today as Gary talks about his years not knowing his biological family and then through genealogy and inspiration he is able to meet his siblings and extended family. Doctrine & Covenants 2: 1 “Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 2 And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. 3 If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.” bethnewellcoaching.com bethnewellcoaching@gmail.con

The Lord called many in the early Restored Church to obtain and share a "witness" of the unfolding work. Today, we are likewise called to witness; however, our testimonies can sometimes be overlaid and overcomplicated with tradition, culture, trite phrases, or misunderstandings. In this episode we study Doctrine & Covenants 14-17 in search of clear truths about witnessing as we invite you to ponder your own witness and where the Lord would have you share it. In many ways the world in 1831 looked very similar to the world in 2021. A cholera epidemic that had been spreading in other countries finally hit the United States. The country was recovering from an intense season of political strife and social unrest. An economic depression brought many individuals and families to their knees in the late 1830s. Many people had begun and would continue to advocate for significant social changes that would spawn a civil war and foreshadow multiple world wars. Certainly much of this and more was what the Lord meant when He stated that He knew of the "calamities" that would be coming. After our very own year of calamity, also certainly foreknown by the Lord, we may find ourselves feeling very much like our early Church sisters and brothers--filled with questions, reeling from problems, and wrestling to find faith and truth in trying times. Into all of this the Lord spoke from heaven, gave instructions, and began an ongoing period of restoration that brought light and life to the world. As we begin our study of the Doctrine & Covenants this year we desperately desire the Lord continue that great work of restoration in our own lives. He commands all who read this book to "hearken" to His voice. The question for each of us, then, is this: what do I want to hear from the Lord as I study this year?
