I'm in Doctrine and Covenants 124—“A House unto My Name.” I recap the Saints' move to Nauvoo, why the Lord urgently needed a temple, and how faithful discipleship (taking counsel, staying humble, keeping the Spirit) helps us endure. I talk about being doers of the word, not hearers only; welcoming strangers like the people of Quincy did; and practical ways to serve—yes, including finding refugee and local needs on JustServe.org. I also touch on Nauvoo ordinances, baptisms for the dead, and making temple work part of daily discipleship. At the end, I invite you to pray about one specific thing you'll do this week—and then go do it.    Follow me on Substack to get this sent directly to your inbox each week.  And if you haven't bought my book about the power of the Book of Mormon, which includes a simple five-step method to getting the most out of your study, you can buy it here.  Yipee! Send us a text"Uncle Andrew" is back!  From Come Follow Me:         "As difficult as the last six years had been for the Saints, things started to look up in the spring of 1839: The refugee Saints had found compassion among the citizens of Quincy, Illinois. Guards had allowed the Prophet Joseph Smith and other Church leaders to escape captivity in Missouri. And the Church had just purchased land in Illinois where the Saints could gather again. Yes, it was swampy, mosquito-infested land, but compared to the challenges the Saints had already faced, this probably seemed manageable. So they drained the swamp and drafted a charter for a new city, which they named Nauvoo. It means “beautiful” in Hebrew, though it was more an expression of faith than an accurate description, at least at first. Meanwhile, the Lord was impressing His Prophet with a sense of urgency. He had more truths and ordinances to restore, and He needed a holy temple where the Saints could receive them. In many ways, these same feelings of faith and urgency are important in the Lord's work today.        While Nauvoo did become a beautiful city with a beautiful temple, both were eventually abandoned. But the Lord's truly beautiful work, all along, has been to “crown you with honor, immortality, and eternal life” (Doctrine and Covenants 124:55), and that work never ends."Support the Show!Become a "Patron Saint"!

In Exodus 24, God establishes His covenant with Israel—sealed in blood, confirmed by sacrifice, and celebrated with a shared meal in His presence. Though His people later broke that covenant, God's mercy endured. In Jesus Christ, the true Mediator, God formed a new and better covenant, sealed with Christ's own blood and inviting us into lasting relationship, redemption, and fellowship with God.

Herb Blum spoke at Covenant Connection church on Sunday, October 26, 2025. Click here to download the notes and listen to the audio: https://covenantconnection.sermon.net/22457669 You can subscribe / follow the podcast for the sermons: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/d4d96426-8560-4524-b21b-ac5f62d8db06/covenant-connection Covenant Definition & Significance: Herb explained that a covenant is a sacred, binding agreement between God and his people, likened to a contract, with the Bible as the written contract. Every word in the Bible is binding, and God swore by himself that his promises will work if followed. Old vs. New Covenant: He contrasted the Old Covenant (with Israel, involving animal blood and curses for breaking it) and the New Covenant (through Jesus' blood, offering blessings and forgiveness for all believers). The New Covenant allows every born-again believer to have a direct relationship with God, not just select individuals. Spiritual vs. Fleshly Life: Herb emphasized that believers are spirit beings placed in earthly bodies, and must train the flesh to follow God's law rather than worldly desires. Walking in the Spirit brings life and peace, while following the flesh leads to death. Faith and Speaking God's Word: He taught that faith is expecting to receive what God has promised, and that speaking the words of the covenant (Bible promises) is essential for receiving them. Faith comes by hearing the spoken word of God, and believers have authority to speak life and blessings. Practical Application: Herb encouraged searching and researching scripture to build faith, then speaking God's promises over situations (e.g., healing, provision). He stressed the importance of not doubting, but believing and speaking with authority, as Jesus did. Authority and Dominion: Believers have authority over the enemy and are given dominion over the earth, as stated in Genesis. The covenant provides protection, blessings, and the ability to overcome challenges. Encouragement & Prayer: The sermon closed with encouragement to rely on God's covenant for hope, peace, and strength, especially in difficult times, and a prayer thanking God for the covenant and its blessings.

The revelation outlines the importance of these structures for the gathering of the Saints and the performance of sacred ordinances. It also provides guidance on church leadership, appointing specific individuals to various roles, and emphasizes the need for unity and faithfulness among the members. For centuries, a single line from Paul's letter to the Romans - “not all Israel is Israel” - has been used to rewrite the story of God's faithfulness.  But was Paul really declaring that the Church replaced Israel? Or was he weeping over his people, trusting that God's promises still stand? This episode takes a deep look into Romans 9–11 and Galatians 6, unpacking what Paul meant by “the Israel of God” and how a single mistranslated conjunction has shaped two millennia of confusion.  We'll explore the grief behind Paul's words, the endurance of God's covenants, and the modern drift that has led Christians to read prophecy as poetry and Israel's story as metaphor. As anti-Semitism rises and theology grows foggy, it's time to recover what the Apostle Paul never meant to erase: that Israel's unbelief doesn't cancel God's faithfulness - it magnifies it. Key Takeaways Paul's “anguish and unceasing sorrow” in Romans 9 reveals grief, not rejection. “Not all Israel is Israel” distinguishes the nation from its remnant, not Israel from the Church. God's covenants - Abrahamic, Mosaic, Davidic, and New - remain active and irrevocable. “The Israel of God” (Gal. 6:16) refers to Jewish believers, not the Church replacing Israel. Translation shifts like changing “and” to “even” have fueled replacement theology. The Church's inclusion in God's plan never meant Israel's exclusion. When we forget Israel, we lose the storyline of our own salvation. What happens when a senior biblical scholar changes their mind—publicly? In this episode, Dr. John Walton returns to explain key shifts in his thinking, especially about Genesis, the temple, and covenant theology. He unpacks two major paradigm shifts: first, that Genesis creation isn't about material origins, but about functional order; second, that Genesis 3 isn't even about sin—it's about humanity's search for order. He also revisits his earlier view that the cosmos should be seen as a temple, now offering a more nuanced perspective: “I'm very happy to think about this as establishing sacred space… without necessarily extending the temple metaphor to the concept of boundaries.” Walton explains how ancient Near Eastern concepts shape the biblical text, but cautions against overgeneralizing differences between Israel and its neighbors. “God does not have needs. Don't think that way. Everybody else around you thinks that way.” He argues Israel's rituals weren't about feeding the deity, but forming covenant relationship—and this, he claims, is unique in the ancient world. More than anything, Walton champions a commitment to evidence over dogma. “If your commitment is to the evidence, your commitment has to be to cognitive flexibility.” We are listener supported. While Sandra is now enjoying life in a condominium in Sandy, Utah, having retired from the stresses of her old neighborhood in Salt Lake City, her journey as a critic began in the late 1950s alongside her husband, Jerald Tanner56. This period of questioning led the newlywed Tanners to explore various splinter groups, resulting in Sandra becoming a temporary convert to a unique movement led by one of the earliest known female leaders in the Restoration: Pauline Hancock's Church of Christ. Critic, Not Anti-Mormon Before diving into her early faith experience, Sandra is careful to distinguish her identity. She notes that she is comfortable being labeled a "Mormon critic," but strongly rejects the term "anti-Mormon.” This is because the "anti-Mormon" label often implies an animosity toward the people, which she does not feel. She condemns any violence against Mormon people. She sees herself as a critic of Mormonism—its doctrines and history—not its followers. Jerald Tanner's Search for the "Start" The Tanners' joint investigation into Mormonism began around 1959. Jerald's personal crisis was spurred around age 18 when his bishop suggested he go on a mission. Jerald began reading critical works, notably Fawn Brodie's book (written in 1945), which was the standard critical source at the time. His investigation led him to seek out local splinter groups, first visiting the Reorganized Church in Salt Lake City. There, he met a barber named James Wardle, who operated a shop that housed one of the largest collections of historic books on early Mormonism. Wardle provided Jerald with a key text that shaped his direction: David Whitmer's pamphlet, An Address to All Believers in Christ (1887). Whitmer's position was that the Book of Mormon was the main thing and that Joseph Smith "got a big head, invented all this other stuff.” This idea became Jerald's litmus test: if there was any truth to Mormonism, it had to be at the start, centered on the Book of Mormon. Jerald even took a trip to Independence, Missouri, to verify Whitmer's claims that the revelations had been changed, specifically noting discrepancies between the current version of the Doctrine and Covenants and the early Book of Commandments. Pauline Hancock and the "Luke-ite" Church of Christ James Wardle also informed Jerald about Pauline Hancock's small Church of Christ group, noting that they aligned more closely with David Whitmer's views than other splinter groups. Pauline Hancock was raised in the Reorganized (RLDS) Church, where her father had served as a pastor in Salt Lake City. She became disillusioned with both the RLDS and the Temple Lot Church. She, her husband, and others who went through similar struggles were deeply impacted by Whitmer's pamphlet. This group, sometimes referred to as "the Luke-ites" because they first met in the home of a Mr. Luke, established their own theological foundation:

Faith Experiences the Invisible Now Growing In God Podcast Program Number: GIG #273 Web Description: It is with the heart that we believe, and the heart is the center of our emotions and feelings. That means faith is not actually a mental process. You are not trying to believe with your thoughts that something will happen. Instead, you are knowing in your heart, by the joy and love and emotions that come by the Spirit, that you already have fulfillment.   Show Notes: How do we measure our faith? It seems that the only gauge we use is a negative one. We measure how much faith we do not have when something we believe for does not happen. But there is a better way. In a message titled, “Living Faith in Action,” John Stevens said of the promises of God that “we were to rejoice in them with faith. We were to lay hold upon them as though we already possessed them.” The greatest measure of our faith is the joy we experience in knowing that we have what God has promised.   We associate believing with the mind. But according to the Scriptures, we believe in our heart. And scripturally the heart is the center of our emotions. The heart is where faith really comes from, and the heart is also at the root of what we feel. Our feelings then impact our physical bodies, our thoughts, and our behavior. So faith from the heart is expressed in emotions. If you want faith to heal someone, then the most effective way is not to mentally strive to believe but to feel the joy of the deliverance in your heart.   We know that the fruit of the Spirit consists of emotions like love, joy, and peace. These emotions are spiritually imparted, meaning we do not get them from the material realm but from the spirit realm. This is the principle that Yeshua (Jesus) taught us in the simplest of terms. He said to pray, “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In other words, the answer exists right now in heaven. And you want it to also exist in your life right now. So do not pray for it to happen in the future. Pray with the knowledge that you have it now, and your faith is bringing it into the earth.   Key Verses:   •       Matthew 6:10. “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” •       Hebrews 11:3. “What is seen was not made out of things which are visible.” •       Romans 10:10. “With the heart a person believes.” •       1 Samuel 13:14. “The LORD has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart.” •       John 10:10. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” •       Romans 4:17–20. “With respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith.” •       Hebrews 11:1. “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” •       1 John 5:4. “This is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”   Quotes:   •       “On the Sabbath, God finished His creation; He finished his works. His works are finished and now they exist. What we are learning to do is to reach into what exists and to find the ways to bring that out of the invisible into the visible, into an effective function within the material world.” •       “We don't hope that there's the restoration of Israel. We don't hope for the Jews to be brought back into the land. We feel the joy. We should be dancing like David in the street at the return of the Ark of the Covenant because we are dancing over the return of the people, the return of all the wealth that they have and all the blessings that are theirs. We're living in it right now.” •       “Your faith is the substance of the thing hoped for. It's the evidence of the thing not seen. That is not wishful thinking. That's God's faith given to you to believe Him and to rejoice with Him.”   Takeaways:   1.    How do you measure how much faith you have? Look to what you are feeling in your heart. 2.    Having faith for something means that you have already embraced it in your heart. You are not praying with hope that it will happen. You pray knowing that you have it right now. 3.    Our emotions are something tangible. Study your heart and the emotions that are there. Emotions trigger thoughts and then the thoughts come out of your mouth. And that is what is creative.

Imagine being unjustly imprisoned for months, watching your family and people suffer, and asking the piercing question: "O God, where art thou?" The revelations given to Joseph Smith in the darkest dungeon of his life are some of the most beautiful and powerful in all scripture. Summary: In this profound episode, we explore the transcendent revelations of Doctrine and Covenants 121, 122, and 123, written from the confines of Liberty Jail. D&C 121: The Power of Righteousness. We delve into Joseph's heartfelt plea, "How long shall thy hand be stayed?" The Lord answers with a staggering lesson: authority and power are inseparably connected with the principles of righteousness. We analyze the fatal trap of "unrighteous dominion"—covering our sins, gratifying pride, and exercising compulsion—which instantly causes the heavens to withdraw. Crucially, we learn the six principles of Godly Influence: persuasion, long-suffering, gentleness, meekness, love unfeigned, and kindness. This section is a master class in Christlike leadership. D&C 122: Eternal Perspective in Suffering. The Lord reassures Joseph: "My son, peace be unto thy soul." He validates every trial Joseph has faced, from false accusations to the "jaws of hell," and promises that "all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good." This section confirms that the "Son of Man hath descended below them all," granting Him perfect knowledge to comfort us in our extremities. D&C 123: The Duty to Record. Finally, we discuss the duty to collect a "catalog of catastrophes" detailing the Saints' sufferings and abuses. This was not for vengeance, but to "leave the whole nation without excuse" and to help those who are "kept from the truth because they know not where to find it." The lesson culminates with the principle of total effort: "cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God." Call-to-Action: What principle from D&C 121 is helping you the most right now? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Learning to understand the Bible is a lot like learning how to swim: you never know how well you're doing until you jump into the deep end. Anybody can appreciate John 3:16, but when you wade into the deeper waters of Scripture, it's easy to feel like you're drowning. So it is with the middle section of Hebrews (chapters 5-10), which holds some of the most complex concepts in the Bible. Join us Sundays in October at The Story as we take a deep dive in search of profound truths about Jesus, the Gospel, and the shortfalls of human religion.

SWM 154 - Sex before marriage - when you remove covenant from intimacy. Check out the blog post here for more details and links. In my last episode, I talked about how sex is an act of worship because having sex, the way God intended, gives worth to Him. It honours what He created by using it as He intended. However, our society is doing its best to invert that by taking away elements of God's plan so as to distort sex. To make it not something that's worship and creative, but rather destructive to ourselves, to each other, and to society as a whole. So, today we're going to explore sex outside of marriage, or what happens when you remove the covenant from sexual intimacy. And to be clear, the legal status of the relationship is not the big problem here. It's the intentional lifelong monogamous commitment to each other. Arguably, many marriages in the Bible are considered marriages simply because they had sex. However, sex is meant to seal a covenant, not substitute for one.Links in this podcast episode:Marriage CoachingSpeak at an event or churchArticle as a PDF (without mention of UncoveringIntimacy.comPodcast mp3Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and TwitterIf you'd like to discuss the questions as they come in, consider joining our private forum.Thank you to all our faithful supporters! If you like that there are no ads in our podcast and want to keep it that way, check out our support page for more info. It's not always popular to stand for the truth, but are we willing to be voices for the Jewish people and the nation of Israel anyway? In this sermon, Pastor Allen Jackson discusses the heritage of faith we inherited from the Jewish people. God has not and will not reject them, and it's from them we receive our Messiah, Jesus. As World Outreach Church joins with the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews to commemorate the October 7 attacks, Pastor Allen shares practical steps we can take to show support and mercy for Israel. God is shaking the earth, and we want to move with Him.
