In this guest episode, Nimesh is joined by Mark J Platten for a grounded and powerful conversation about what happens when your soul begins calling you beyond the life, identity or work you have built.Mark shares his lifelong connection with nature and how the Earth has guided, held and supported him throughout his life. For Mark, nature is not just somewhere we go. It is a relationship. It communicates, grounds us and reminds us that we are never truly alone. One of the most powerful moments in this conversation is when Mark shares the guidance he received during COVID: you are doing good work in the world, but it is not your soul work. That message became part of a much deeper transition, eventually leading him out of his academic career and into a new chapter of listening, surrendering and trusting what his soul was calling him towards.Together, Nimesh and Mark explore nature connection, masculine energy, midlife transformation, fear, community, emotional intelligence and why so many people are being called into a more heart-led and soul-aligned way of living. This conversation is for anyone questioning their path, feeling called into change, or sensing that their soul is asking for something deeper. Also available to watch on YouTube. If this episode resonates, please like, comment, and follow the podcast. In This Episode✨ Mark's deep relationship with nature and the Earth✨ What happens when your soul calls you beyond the life you built✨ The difference between good work and soul work✨ Masculine energy, midlife transformation and emotional intelligence✨ Community, fear, change and the importance of elder wisdomWhat You'll Take Away✨ You can be doing good work and still feel called into deeper soul work✨ Nature can help you remember who you truly are✨ Fear does not always mean stop; it may be showing you where growth is calling✨ Men need spaces for honesty, support and emotional connection✨ Surrendering does not mean giving up; it means listening more deeplyGuest BioMark J Platten is a teacher, writer and men's work facilitator whose work explores nature connection, soul alignment, midlife transformation, masculine growth and the relationship between humans and the Earth. Mark J. Easter is an ecologist, researcher, and author of more than fifty scientific papers and reports related to carbon cycling and the carbon footprint of agriculture, forestry, and other land uses. On this episode of Nature Revisited, Mark offers us a picture of the impact the foods we eat every day have on the earth. From the soil that grows our crops, to the farmers who steward the land, to the workers and grocers who bring the food to our table, the compounding social and environmental impacts are far-reaching. However, we can employ low-carbon, in-season alternatives to make our foods more sustainable, but we must first understand how food is produced, harvested, and shipped. In this interview, Kerry Lutz speaks with Mark J. Quann about recent market performance and why US stocks have lagged global markets despite what he views as a still-strong economy. He points to rising wages and increasing energy independence as key factors supporting long-term growth. Quann outlines the "buy, borrow, die" strategy — a tax-focused approach built on owning assets like stocks, ETFs, real estate, crypto, life insurance, and precious metals. Instead of selling assets and triggering taxes, he explains how borrowing against a portfolio can provide access to cash while keeping investments intact. He also shares practical steps for getting started, including small automated contributions and using margin loans through platforms like M1 Finance. Covered-call and commodity ETFs are discussed as potential income and inflation hedges, along with the long-term tax advantages of holding appreciating assets. EPISODE 651 - Mark J Wilson - Full of Beans - A dead professor. A missing student, And a time-traveling detective.Mark is a scientist who works in gene therapy and very foolishly decided he had to write a novel about a time-traveling detective in his spare time.I live in Washington, DC with my wife, Carrie, but I was born and brought up in Reading, England. My favourite place in the world is in the Cotswolds, just down the road from Oxford (where most of Full of Beans is set).I went to college in Canterbury where I studied biochemistry and got a PhD. I have worked in biopharmaceuticals for the last 35 years or so.I'm currently working in gene therapy, helping to develop a much-needed cure for Rett Syndrome.I worked in Nottingham and Cambridge before moving back to Reading (so it can't be all bad, right?). Then I came to America in 2009. It does seem like a drastic move just to get out of Reading again. I lived in North Carolina for 7 years before moving to the DC area.Growing up in Reading gave me a fascination with trains and planes, being as how there wasn't much else there to interest a kid. I loved hanging around at the west end of Platform 5, and when Concorde would fly over. And there was a Model Shop. I loved the Model Shop. And Eames' model train shop.My dad gave me lifelong passions for astronomy, physics, chess, cooking, and model-making. And I love model trains. Over the years, in my spare time, I've also been a watercolor artist and a music producer. I love electronic dance music.Full of Beans is my first published novel and it is dedicated to Carrie and her coffee machine, which would constantly instruct us to “Fill Beans,” whether the hopper was full or empty. Without either of them this book might never have been written. It took over two years to write, on the weekends and holidays, and I learned a lot about writing.I heard they are bringing back Clippy... ‘I see you're writing a novel. Do you need help with that?' I did need help, but instead I have relied on some actually talented hooman-beans for that. The book was an editor's nightmare to work on. We chose British English spellings (like ‘colour') and phrases (such as ‘bugger off') to go with most of the settings and characters. However, we also chose to go with the Chicago Manual of Style for other stuff like punctuation, rather than the Oxford Guide to Style. Sorry Oxford. Please check the CMOS before levelling criticism at the editing; it was a heroic effort. Thanks Kevin and Avery.Feel free, however, to debate the choice to liberally use the Oxford comma. And to jolly-well split some infinitives. And start sentences with conjunctions. If strict British grammar is your passion, rather than a fun read, then hard cheese. It isn't meant to be bloody Shakespeare. I'm sure there'll be a new Booker Prize nominee along any minute now.The artwork was accomplished with help from artlist.io, using its Comic Noir algorithm and many, many attempts, amalgamations, and many hours of editing images to get what I wanted. The book cover was a team effort with Joe and Michelle. https://markjwilson.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

Evidence from the Frontline: Mental Health in Crisis Affected Contexts, episode 5: EASE“What matters to young people? Climate, jobs, and mental health.”Early Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) is an evidence-based group intervention that helps 10–15-year-olds in adversity-affected communities manage stress, anxiety, and depression through skills training. It includes seven sessions for adolescents and three for caregivers, using adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques delivered by trained non-specialist helpers. In this fifth episode, Sarah Harrison, Director of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement MHPSS Hub, speaks with Professor Mark Jordans (researcher at  King's College London and Director of Research and Development at War Child), and Dr Zeinab Hijazi (Global Lead on Mental Health at UNICEF), to hear more about EASE.We learn that, while not a ‘magic wand', EASE has shown significant results and could help fill a gap in mental health support for young people in crisis-affected and low-resource settings. Mark, Sarah, and Zeinab discuss the rigorous training, competencies, and supervision needed for non-specialist providers, and the journey to develop, test and adapt EASE for implementation worldwide, including scale-up in Ukraine. They discuss future research opportunities, such as youth-led research or strengthening and simplifying the intervention. We learn that EASE should be integrated into a broader system of care, informed by national policy frameworks and practice standards. Key resources for practitionersEarly Adolescent Skills for Emotions (EASE) – manual and practice materials in multiple languages published by the World Health OrganisationUNICEF Adolescent Mental Health Hub- resources for frontline workers, adolescents, and caregiversReach Now- a tool developed by War Child, for use by community members without a professional mental health background, to improve identification of mental health problems in young people and promote care seeking.Read more about the research:Mark J.D. Hey folks, welcome to a bonus episode of the Ecosystem Member podcast. Some of you are probably aware that Ecosystem Member is actually my second podcast project. My first called You Can't Eat Money looked specifically at the relationship between humans and nature and the more-than-human world through the medium of food. Given that our food system accounts for about a third of global greenhouse gas emissions - in particular incredibly potent methane from animal agriculture - and many of us in the West eat a few meals at day, food seemed like the best place to start where individual action can actually make a huge difference. What you pick up off the grocery store shelf and what restaurants you frequent and what you order at restaurants you frequent shapes demand. If we opt for foodstuffs that are more environmentally responsible, that demand indicator can shape the purchasing and investment of large businesses. The problem is there is a lot of misinformation out there. Just a couple weeks ago, a “major” study commissioned in the UK state that beef cattle farming was “beyond net zero” meaning a reducing in beef production and consumption isn't necessary because the farm captures more carbon than it emits. The study, however, was quite small, on only three fields out of the 105 fields on farm, failing to meet the threshold for being statistically significant. (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/may/07/cattle-sheep-farming-sustainable-food) What's probably not surprising is that the research was funded by McDonald's, which according to reporting from Bloomberg has a larger footprint of heat-trapping emissions than the entire country of Norway, the entirety of cement production in the United States, and American Airlines. It has been estimated that McDonald's sells about 2.36 billion hamburgers per year globally. Many people who have shared the McDonald's-funded research online have used the phrase “It's not the cow, it's the how,” which to put it bluntly is a ridiculous frame that insinuates that the other side is actually blaming cows for climate change. As Andy Jarvis, the Director of Future of Food at the Bezos Earth Fund, told me in a recent LinkedIn exchange, the cow that exists for animal agriculture today has been so manipulated by humans that it no longer resembles the cows that were first domesticated. So, in light of its recent James Beard Foundation award nomination, I am re-releasing the episode I recorded for You Can't Eat Money with the author of “The Blue Plate” - Mark J. Easter. I've read far too many books and white papers on this topic. Mark's research, insight and empathy makes “The Blue Plate” the only book I really recommend to people when it comes to understanding the impact on nature and the more-than-human world - and ourselves really - of our food system. So huge congrats to Mark on his nomination and I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I did when I recorded it. Buy “The Blue Plate” by Mark J. Easter - https://bookshop.org/a/96865/9781952338205

John is joined by Mark J. Sundahl, Professor of Law at Cleveland State University College of Law and the Director of the Global Space Law Center. They discuss the evolving law governing activities in outer space. Prof. Sundahl explains that space law originated from concerns during the Cold War when Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite, flew over the U.S., raising fears that nations could potentially place nuclear weapons in space, hovering over and ready to drop on other nations. This led to the creation of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, establishing fundamental principles such as "free use of outer space," the prohibition of nuclear weapons and claims of sovereignty on celestial bodies, and the ability of private companies to operate in space under the authorization and supervision of their countries' governments. Prof. Sundahl also explains the international treaties on the rescue of astronauts, liability for space activities and for registration of objects sent to space. They then discuss how liability for damages caused by space objects is becoming increasingly pressing due to the rapidly increasing congestion of satellites and the aging of equipment that has been in orbit for decades. One example Prof. Sundahl discusses is a recent case where a falling piece of an American company's capsule being operated by NASA damaged a house in Florida. He explains that, normally, international treaties impose strict liability on states for surface damage, but incidents within a country are governed by domestic law. He also explains that for damages that occur in orbit, liability issues become complex due to the lack of established norms. Prof. Sundahl then observes that although the United States heavily regulates private companies' activities in space, new challenges have arisen, such as resource extraction on celestial bodies. He explains that although the Outer Space Treaty prohibits sovereignty over the Moon, the U.S. allows companies to own resources extracted from the Moon, a stance that is not universally accepted. Professor Sundahl also describes the legal uncertainty surrounding suborbital and orbital space tourism. He explains that currently, suborbital flights require minimal safety disclosures, and orbital tourism lacks regulation entirely, raising concerns as private companies expand their operations. Finally, Prof. Sundahl explains the growing threat of militarization in space and that, with countries developing military capabilities and the U.S. establishing a Space Force, there is a real risk of conflicts extending beyond Earth.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. Joining me for this episode of The Grant Williams Podcast, is author Mark J. Higgins who has just published his excellent new book ‘Investing in US Financial History.' We begin by discussing the overall importance of understanding financial history and segue into a conversation about the comprehensive narrative of the US financial system from 1790 to the present which his book provides. Mark highlights the role of key figures such as Alexander Hamilton, discusses the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913 and introduces one of the least-known, but perhaps biggest trailblazing characters in US financial history: Hetty Green. Higgins also shares his insights on investor behavior and the cyclical nature of markets, as well as his views on the current crypto craze. Throw in Ray Dalio, Andrew Jackson, Robert Triffin and Charlie Munger and there's something for everyone in this excellent conversation. Every episode of the Grant Williams podcast, including This Week In Doom, The End Game, The Super Terrific Happy Hour, The Narrative Game, Kaos Theory and Shifts Happen, is available to Copper, Silver and Gold Tier subscribers at my website www.Grant-Williams.com.  Copper Tier subscribers get access to all podcasts, while members of the Silver Tier get both the podcasts and my monthly newsletter, Things That Make You Go Hmmm… Gold Tier subscribers have access to my new series of in-depth video conversations, About Time.
